    Ok.

I finally made it work!! So if someone wants to know, YES, you can use backlit keyboards with GT780DXR models that don´t have it.

You don´t need any special bios or firmware. You just need to connect both cables PROPERLY. One is easy to connect but the second one (the one you need to remove the bottom cover ) is connected with the orange side pointing up (if the cable is really twisted, then its probably correctly inserted).

The bad thing is you can´t control with the panel or the keys, just klm. The good thing I finally have the backlit keyboard and now everything is awesome :D

LOL! So much for stereotypes, right?

Well, I'd say you will definitely want to use your backpack, and you probably won't want to carry it around all the time. Also, for wi-fi hotspots and coffee shops, it may seem a bit large given it's a 17.3" notebook..... but this doesn't bother me at all, so long as I have an A/C outlet handy. (ps: You don't want to game off the wire. With that powerful GPU, the battery will not do..... it needs the juice, so plug it in when gaming.)

The thing to remember is this is a 'power' notebook, and about as good as it get to being a true DTR (desktop replacement)..... and GREAT for LAN parties! Also, it is very stylish, so you'll love showing it off. You will be the most AWESOME girl in the crowd, as guys drool over your technological prowess! ;)

As far as little girls are concerned, I bought my wife the GT780 to replace her aging 17.3" Toshiba...... SHE LOVES IT!

The question is..... are you a little girl, or a POWER GAMER girl? No powder-puffs here..... Be a POWER-PUFF!

BE PROUD, and don't stand for those stereotypes!

    LOL!

    :D :D :D

PS: I hope you took my advice, and purchased from a reputable custom building reseller...... right???

The links and prices were from Feb 28th.

They appeared to be normal prices and not specials but I see the prices went back up to where they were before.

Hahah :D I really love your sense of humor without it being too off-topic. I'm glad that your wife loves the laptop. I ordered mine from a reseller too (hopefully reputable) but i think i could trust them because i always buy ny printing materials from them and my father has been a regular customer for years. On the contrary, i LOVE powerpuff girls, especially buttercup because i grew up as a tomboy and daddy's girl so i suppose i'm used to doing hard work but the way my dad says it makes the laptop seem so much heavier than the average 10kg rice bags that i carry around all the time  oh by the way, you're telling me that it cannot last long without a power supply? Not even for watching videos etc? And sry but what on earth are LAN parties?

@Sapphiera: How would you be using this "big" laptop? If your primary use would be social networking, browsing, emailing, chatting, watching videos (in this order), then the GT78x might not be the best for you, in my humble opinion.

The GT78x can handle a 2hr~ movies with a bit more time to spare. But yes, compared to "regular" laptops (not gaming laptops), it cannot last long without power supply.

If you're not going to use this beast's prowess, you might want to wait for the bigger Ultrabooks to roll out this year.

All of these, as I said, are just my opinions based on what I've read so far.

Also, regarding lan parties: LAN party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

oh i'll be using it to play WoW and a few other games that do not require such high power like maybe ROSE Online or AuditionSEA but i'm the kind of person who wants the best that i could get because who knows, maybe i'll move to better games in the future :/

If you are not a gamer or in need of a hi-end GPU, then I concur with the advice jetherson is giving you, and I think he has adequately answered most your questions. I would only reiterate, you'll get an average of 2 1/2 hours unplugged, if not doing anything that extensively uses the GPU..... such as gaming.

My wife primarily uses hers only in locations where she can plug-in...... her desk, cafes, hotels, etc.

Again, this is a power gamer's notebook, and if this is your forte, YOU GO POWERPUFF! And yes, it's much lighter than that bag O' rice, and playing WoW, you'll say WOW!

so what does your wife use it for? and does it work well for photoshop too? my current laptop takes ages to load photoshop so i can't do much editing on pictures. i'm kinda excited about getting it because from what i see on this thread, it's a hell of a laptop to have and i'm pretty sure i'll be really happy with it and that i'll feel super duper proud to carry it around :D hahah

EDIT : any games that you could recommend so that i could totally make full use of the power? :D i'm planning to start gaming once i complete my A Levels and get into university because that's when i could FINALLY slack after a year and a half of cramming info into my brain!

The GT780 is great for Photoshop. The 570m chews right through it.

If you're going to use Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom for your photography, then I'm sure you'd be happy on GT780's GTX570M :D

    Happier than using GT555M ;)

Are you from SG? So who's the reseller that you mentioned awhile ago?

Ken was right , it was driver after all . Because i tested it out the driver he posted.

I knew there was something wrong by people who posted

    Glad ken helped me out.

    Here are my benchmarks

    3DMARK VANTANGE : P14377 > P15107
    3DMARK11 : P3295 > P3513

I was able to go higher up to P15190 and P3607 or higher after a few more test but i don't bother to include so many attachments here. Just four will do . Because my upload speed is quite slow at night =/

    None of them are overclock

After Oced , i found out that the 3 test are different from each other it will go between 17214 - 17481 . I provided the average

The lower score = no TDE enable
The higher score = TDE enabled

    No OC or TDE

Very good He1p...... Nice! Now please go easy on the OC of your 580M. You take great care to keep your notebook 'like new', and we certainly would hate to hear you have burnt that GPU.

I do not think the problem was with the folks who posted here, but more a failure to adequately communicate. I told you all I did was update the drivers. Also did I, or did I not, tell you to get with KEN if you have any problems with your notebook? Now see, that worked out nicely, didn't it? ;)

It's good to see you are finally happy, and all is good in the world now.

    Thanks Ken! :D

I am a new member here but have been lurking around for about a month. Long story short, I got MSI GT780 from New Egg, already RMA it twice (first one didn't even boot up, 2nd one died after 10 mins) I am on my 3rd (and have to said really disappointed with MSI built quality, it seems like they don't even test out these machine, should have gone with Gentech custom built one). It's out of 30 days so I can't RMA it anymore and this third one while working OK most of the time, have problem installing software and updating Windows. I have a feeling it's bad memory (most of BSOD show Memory Management errror and it also fail Mem Dianostic (Microsoft).

I really don't want to send it to MSI (even though it's still underwarranty but I read so many horror story about MSI repair service, do some digging after I start having problem, stupid me should have do research before). Anyway should I just get memory and replaced it? If then what is the correct memory for the 780 DX?

I am thinking I should also do fresh install of Windows, since it fail all the update so far but I don't know if it's memory related or MSI just did shoddy job installing Windows on this machine. I call their customer support and they were of no help (he told me to go to go to Microsoft site and download missing files ...).

Anyway would love suggestion or opinion what is my best course of action.
    Thanks you in advanced.

    Welcome Antiquegamer,

for my 2cents, i would either buy new ram or send it in, but i wouldn't blame msi for this, its newegg who probly just gave you a refurbished laptop (ie: pre-owned then returned).

i think after 3 RMA's you'd be entitled to a full refund would'nt you ? contact them see if they'd be willing to do it.

you can then contact one for the vendors in post #1 of this thread for service.

Well, my wife is not a gamer, but she is a multimedia junkie, loves photo & movies editing, and she does a lot of other girl stuff, LOL! :D

Myself, I am not an RPG'er, but more of the FPS genre..... MOH, COD, Fear, BF, and the like. The next game release I am waiting on is Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2. Though the first release of this game only received marginal reviews, I actually enjoyed it, very much so....... so much for reviews, right? Anyhow, I am excited about this 2nd release, especially given the use of CryEngine 3.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 - E3 2011: IGN Live Commentary

As far as RPG games, I know there is loads of good stuff released since WoW, but I am not the best to make recommendations here. Just Google the top gaming sites, and you are sure to find games of interest. Also, I am sure there are many RPG game reviews within these forums, and many RPG'ers here amonst us who would be happy to help. My eldest son is a big RIFT player, and this may be one you will enjoy.

    MMORPG game reviews

Best of luck, and you enjoy that pretty new GT783.

Hi I recently bought an msi gt 780 (406) from gentech and am looking for a little help. In the past week my computer has blue screened at least 3 times and in different situations. Once while downloading a game from a cd. Once while browsing the internet. And once while doing nothing. It was in oc mode for two of the incidents. Each error message said something along the lines of 'executable memory process in a non executable location'. After restarting it would act normal, like nothing happened. What can I do to find out why this is happening and save my $2k machine from being ruined?

I don't know of any MMO's out right now that will push the 570m to it's full potential but I can recommend some RPG's that would show off the graphics of your new laptop.

Skyrim and the Witcher 2. I liked the Witcher 2 much more than Skyrim but that's not to say Skyrim's environment isn't beautiful. I just didn't like the game play or the story. The Witcher 2 on the other hand has very nice game play and a very immersive story.

Doesn't surprise me coming from Newegg. I would run Memtest to see if the memory is in fact the problem. If it is, I would just get yourself some upgraded 1600 Ram and fix it yourself. Also, I would do a fresh Windows install.

Samsung and Crucial make very good memory.

Do not feel bad..... nothing stupid here...... it's a learning curve we many of us have gone through. Also, it is not necessarily MSI build quality. Dealing with big-box retailers & e-tailers, believe me when I say, you could have similar experiences with ANY manufacturer or brand.

You have a few options here, but either way, your patience will probably be tested..... and you'll have to decide the avenue of least displeasure.

As smitty123 suggest, I would 'strongly' (yet artfully & calmly) insist on a a full and complete refund from NewEgg. No customer should have to go through this, and you have a right to be made whole in this. NewEgg does have a strict 'Computer Replacement Only Return Policy', but refunds are possible if you are persistant..... I have done so, but it's a pain, and a bit time consuming.

Insist that you have tried their 'Computer Replacement Policy' 3 times, and three times they have sent you a non-working defective product, and not delivered 'as advertised' or what you have paid for. Tell them you DO NOT want yet another replacement, you no longer want a GT780, and make it clear that a refund is the only recourse at this stage. This will probably take numerous phone calls and emails, but again it can be done. To effect their attention for immediate remedy, you may need to work your way up their chain of supervision, until you reach someone having authority for refund approval. Along the way, it may be helpful to toss around suggestions that you intend to contact their local BBB, State Attorney, and consumer protection advocates, if necessary.

I have had a few trying times with NewEgg, but hopefully your case will go smoothly. If you can achieve this end, you can then purchase from a reputable custom builder..... an experience I am sure will go much smoother, and much more to your satisfaction.

2nd option, exercise your MSI warranty and begin an immediate RMA. Info on this can be found HERE, and the sooner you get started, the sooner you get relief. I can't begin to tell of the countless folks I've seen here in the forums, who do nothing but whine and complain about not wanting to RMA..... delaying their misery days, weeks, even months...... eventually doing so anyhow, and then finally, all is good in the world again. LOL! :D

3rd option, contact one of our reputable resellers. See if one of them will assist you with the manufacturer, or perhaps arrange for them to do the repair. Even if this is done at your own expense, your machine will be right, and your warranty preserved. While you are at it, you might consider having them do a re-paste of the CPU & GPU.

4th option, probably the quickest and easiest, perhaps most costly, and if luck is not on your side, could become problematic. Troubleshoot and identify the exact issue yourself, or have this done by a local tech. Hopefully the issue will be something easily accessible and replacable, i.e: memory. I would then do a fresh install of the OS, and the latest drivers. I cannot recommend this option however, because should the issue be something manufacturer specific, you've wasted time (possibly money too), you are back to options 1, 2, or 3, and you have possibly put the warranty at risk.

Best of luck to you, let us know what you decide, and how it goes.

    :)

He1p, I can tell you are a meticulous user, and someone who takes great pride in his notebook. For you, I would not recommend you OC beyond the use of the manufacturer's approved TDE engine (P1). That 580M will game just fine without OC, this will keep safe from burning the GPU, and improve the life of your machine. Also, since you have installed the latest nVidia drivers, your stock & TDE benchmarks look very good.

Any time you OC you drive up temps, risk the warranty, and potentially decrease the life of the system.

OC'ing is best left to those knowledgeable, and those who can afford or are willing to take risk.

    :)

It's possible the RAM causing it, you can start with remove one stick of RAM at a time from the bottom of the laptop to see if the issue goes away:

What kind of SSD is it?

Have you tried running Memtest to see if the memory is working correctly?

If all else fails, do a fresh install. If it still BSOD after your fresh install, you know it's hardware related.

To run the Windows 7 builtin Memory Diagnostics Tool manually

1.In the search box, type Memory, and then click Diagnose your computer's memory problems. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2.Choose when to run the tool

Well my friend, THE SAME thing happened to me. Long story short - they refused to give me a refund. I got store credit instead. I talked to them at least 5 times and at the end I spoke to the biggest clown in my life. His name was Jonathan. They were very unprofessional, borderline of rude. At one point I just couldn't fight with them anymore because my wife was pregnant and we obviously had other priorities. Btw, My MSI was bsoding all the time since I opened the box. The bos, however, came opened and I was able to see fingerprints on the laptop - yeah, it was one of those refurb/open items/recycle until someone keep it items. I think it was the memory. tested it and it was giving me errors.

Now, what I would like to friendly tell you is to try different high quality memory like THIS ONE.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Yeah, with the recent memory complaints, I became curious regarding the stability of the stock Elixir/Nanya ram. I just completed Memtest86 runs (all 11 test) on both GT78x machines, and both test were 100% error free..... so I don't think the mem issue is pervasive. Time will tell I guess.....

Interestingly enough, these test provided another example in the difference a processor can make. My GT783 (2860QM) took 31 minutes to complete the test, while the GT780 (2670QM) took 37 minutes.

    :)

Have you registered the notebook with MSI?

That Samsung DDR3-1333 is good memory but very close to the price of this memory.
    Amazon.com: Kingston HyperX Plug n Play 8 GB Kit (2x4GB Modules) 1600MHz DDR3 SODIMM Notebook/Netbook Memory 8 Dual Channel Kit (PC3 12800) 204-Pin KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G: Electronics

Dram memory maker's profits have been in the toilet for a while now and I'm sure they're doing as much as they can to cut corners.

Japan's Elpida filed for bankruptcy this past Tuesday.

Powerchip,Micron,Hynix,Samsung and a small list of others will probably benifit from 1 fewer players.

In my opinion Samsung is making the best memory on the market. The guys over at overclockers.net think so as well. While it doesn't make a difference to me since I don't overclock my memory, they were able to overclock Samsung DDR3 higher than any other on the market. What that does mean to me is that it's well built.

When you pay for Samsung RAM, your paying for quality and not some heat sink that does absolutely nothing besides add cost to the end user. It's already been proven that the heat sinks do next to nothing.

Lastly, if I'm not mistaken, I trust Ken from Gentech and I believe his opinion regarding Samsung's memory is the same.

By the way, if your interested, you can easily clock that memory to 1600.

Crucial is good stuff to. In fact, the only memory I buy nowadays is either Crucial or Samsung. It's kind of hard to ignore all the pro advice when they state both Samsung and Crucial currently make the best/most reliable memory out there.

    Hi!

I just got my GT780DX-231NE and I love it! I live in Finland and was hoping for the GT783 models to come here but the importer said they´re not coming.

Been happy so far with the laptop, it´s the first gaming laptop I´ve ever owned, not the first I am going to be playing with though :)

Still getting used to the keyboard layout since the Fin layout in this is a bit odd but works for me.

Haven´t noticed any issues yet, just some minor glitches. Like when windows updates kicked in, it got stuck 2 times when rebooting... And the THX studio pro button allways puts the volume all the way up and runs Windows media player which is a bit irritating. And when I ordered it and it came to the nearest post office to me, I went to get it and unpacked it only to find that the Power adapter was missing... Made an angry phone call and got it the next day.

What patches and drivers should I now download? There was a drivers disk with the PC but aren´t they all outdated?

I was confused of how many downgraded models there are in Finland... There were models with an i5 and 6gb ram, with 500gb hdd.

Mine is the best I could find from Finland atm, atleast for the GT780´s. I thought about ordering outside Fin, even chatted with XoticPC Hutsady and emailed with Ken from Gentech PC, but decided this is the easiest way for me. Did not get exactly what I could from US, but I´m happy with this!

    Here are the specs:
    I7-2630QM
    GTX570M 1,5GB
17,3 FHD 1920x1080 Non glare type
    16GB DDR3
    120GB SSD+750GB HDD 7200rpm
    802.11b/g/n

The models with I7-2670QM are coming here in like 2 months but I didnt find that too big of a deal.

PS. Any other Fin GT780 owners here?

First of all thanks for all the advices and I will try calling NewEgg and see what they said about getting refund. When I have to RMA it, the guy on the phone was actually pretty nice and they even next day the 2nd replacement.

I don't understand however, why is MSI is not the culprit here. To me it seems they just built a shoddy machine and even let said it was my bad luck with defective unit, it's seem they didn't even test out these computers. Unless I am missing something? Are these machine built by NewEgg? Or are you guys just saying they send out products that are known to be defective?
