Hi Everyone,
First time poster, long time reader. I need your help. Sorry, this may be long.
I bought my GT780R-014US in July. From the start I had strange crashing issues, various BSOD problems and a lot of freezing. I ran MemTest and received 10,000 errors in about 15 seconds. I called MSI tech support and told them the laptop often crashed for no apparent reason, but mostly during gaming and that my RAM was bad. The guy asked me what games I played and I began to list... I only managed to say "Sims 3..." before I was instantly questioned on my motives for "buying such a powerful machine to play such a weak game." (literally what the tech support guy said). Well, I didn't buy the rig explicitly to play Sims 3. I was then interrupted again and the tech guy suggested that maybe my laptop wasn't actually plugged in and the "crashing" was due to the battery dying.... Did he really think I was that stupid? I hung up, called back and got a different guy who opened an RMA ticket and my machine was sent off for repairs.
One of the RAM sticks was indeed corrupted. It was replaced, and the RMA Dept also replaced the fan. This is where more problems start...
I believe the new fan (or the replacement of the fan) now causes my machine to make a noise similar to Rice Krispies cereal! This noise occurs when the machine turns on, when the fan runs, when I type on the keyboard, when I open a browser window, when I'm playing a game... basically at any random time. I don't know if it really is the fan, the HD, the processor. No clue. Sounds like it's coming out of the keyboard.
I sent the laptop back for a second RMA and the RMA Dept couldn't hear the crispy noise and returned it without doing anything. The guy at the RMA Dept was not very nice over the phone, either. Basically talked to me like I was some sort of lunatic that was hearing noises and suggested I backup my HD weekly.
As soon as I got it back and took it out of the box and turned it on, it began crisping again.
Should I send it back a 3rd time? Seems a bit ridiculous for a rig that cost me $1800. Do you think they will replace the machine for me if I call to complain? I love my laptop but the constant problems so far, plus the never-ending "snap, crackle, pop" make me uneasy.
thanks in advance for your advice. -
hye guys, when i connect wd my passport usb3.0 to my laptop's usb 3.0, something like this messag came out.. "this device can perform faster if connect to superspeed usb 3.0" Any one knows how to fix this?

got some more information from there as well. Hefty price tag as someone mentioned. Time to save and get some money as a student -

Hi,
anyone flashed the unlocked bios 30e so far around here? any opinions? -
So are you guys glad or mad that they're sticking with the same design for the Gt70?

Anyway, I have to replace my RAM also along with completely nuke my C drive and reinstall Windows. I love my Laptop but MSI simply built crappy quality machine. My next machine will be custom built by a reputable company.
Well, best of luck to you and hope you get your issue fix. I had the same similar situation with Alienware several years back. They RMA my computer until it ran out of warranty then refused to fix it. (another company not to do business with). -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
I don't know where a lot of people that post on this forum bought the GT780/Gt783 notebooks or are thinking of buying them from but I strongly suggest if you haven't bought yet.... buy from resellers that frequently post on this forum.
Many people here swear by GenTechPC.
When you buy from Amazon, newegg,J&R and the likes it's a 100% certainty that your notebook has had no one turn it on since it was assembled at the factory.
Who knows wait degree of bouncing, manhandling and possibly dropping it has been subject to.
Do yourself a favor and order from the recommendations of satisfied customers that post here.
If the reseller customizes a notebook for you,you can be dead sure when it left their shop it was running perfectly. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Rice Krispies.... 'snap, crackle, and pop'? Strange, indeed!
There have been a couple complaints here that sound remotely similar, and the problem turned out to be where the end users did not removed the thin plastic protective film grid, that laces between all the keys of the keyboard. This film grid can be barely visible unless you are looking closely, so just to be sure, have you removed this? Read issue #1 HERE.
Just a thought.......

have you tried it on another surface? maybe the sensor can't work on that one you're using. try a mouse mat.
also there's the old april fools trick of taping a clear piece of tape under it over the sensor
i read it might have something to do with an audio program, maybe it installed some driver. Do you use a usb external sound card?
found this solution on the asus board for the same problem, let us know:
-
@Raud_B - can you please confirm if the sound is coming from the speakers (audio problem) or somewhere else on the notebook (hardware problem).
Does it sound like a wire bouncing off of a fan or more like static? -

Just had my second blue screen today! What could be causing it? The first one I got while playing Crysis 2, and the second one I just playing the original card games.
I´m not too good with computers, but did read from the web that I should copy this text

That is the text I get after booting up, dont understand anything about it. Can anyone here help me with this? (My OS is in Finnish so tried to write the Finnish texts in English with bolded text.
Please help!
PS: The mouse problem I had, was because of static electricity that broke the DPI sensor.
Edit: I have manually only updated the nvidia verde drivers.
3rd edit: I was told I should have had uninstalled Nvidia drivers before updating, now attempting to fix it.. -
Your problem is more likely ram related than video card related.
When you get another blue screen, write done the code on the blue screen itself. (example - 0x0000000A)
You need to test your ram. Get Memtest86, download the Ver 4.0a Windows ISO, burn it to a cd and then boot from that cd. See if any errors pop up during that scan. If you do get errors you will need to RMA your notebook to get the ram replaced. -
Thanks for all the suggestions, but unfortunately the crisping is still happening.
@ -=$tR|k3r=-
Plastic film between keys is definitely removed.
@smitty123
The crisping noise has been noted to occur at all sorts of times, including when the battery is unplugged.
No, I do not use an external usb sound card.
I tried the Asus fix for the microphone... it didn't help.
@MrSeaBass
The sound comes out from the gaps below the keyboard's keys. Sometimes the sound clicks under the "1","2","Q" area, other times it's under the "G","H","B" keys, or under the "P". Rarely does it come from the far right side (the number keypad area). It sounds like static, I suppose.
It crisped a lot today during Skyrim, I think it may be linked to the fan, however, I have noted it happening when the fan doesn't even seem to be running so I am not sure if the fan is the ultimate cause, or maybe it's just a partial cause or trigger.
I also want to note that the sound is never constant. The laptop is usually silent, and the crisping will flare up a few times and last anywhere between one "click" to several "clicketly-click-clicks" over the span of 5 seconds. Once the flaring has begun, it usually continues on and off for 20 minutes... then dies down, stays silent for a while, and starts up again at a random moment. -
I just realized i had the same problem that you describe, two months ago when i bought my notebook. it was an "electronic" "buzzing" that came from under the keyboard, especially when i changed the colors. The conclusion from my local msi dealer: DOA

Last night picked up the Msi gt780Dxr with a Ocz vertex 3 240gb
Who here has 2x ssds in raid0?
Currently adding this drive as os and 500gb slave..
Msi site is ubber slow collecting all the drivers... Only downfall to this machine and any laptop for that matter these days is the crappy os recovery image.
When are companies going to just hand you a dvd with a plain jane os to use... Thats my only rant! -
Hey Ken (and everyone here
). The more I read, the more I'm thinking waiting a month is going to save money. The general consensus on these forums seems to be that new lineups (at least for MSI) are slated for April - the G60/G70 models.
I'm also thinking I might be going a bit overboard on what I need. I won't be doing any heavy gaming but I still want the laptop to be powerful.
I'd really like to not break the $1,500 mark. Like I said, I've customized a GT780DX-406 to $1,604 but ideally I'd like that model, or maybe something not quite geared so much toward gaming, for a couple hundred $$ less.
My basic reqs are 4 ram slots (4x4, 16gb), 1080 full HD display, (Matte/anti glare and a back-lit keyboard being a huge plus).
Going to be looking over some ASUS models today, namely the N series. So far I'm liking the N53SM due to it having 4x4, 16gb RAM capability at a fairly low cost.
Any recommendations you can think of, please let me know! Thanks! -

Hello, first post in this thread. I'm using a GT 780 DXR with the i7-2670QM, 570m 3gb, 16gb Ram, 750gb x2 Raid 0.
I would just like to say that I've been reading this thread for the last 2 days via the Google Search link on the first post. So far I've used you guys to:
- Troubleshoot why the P1 didn't work, ty for the link to the OC software
- Troubleshoot why reformatting with Windows 7 wouldn't configure my hardware, ty for the SP1 Install DVD Link
- Find that dang Corel Software, again ty for the link
- Links for all the other drivers and updates found
I'm still in the process of setting things up and installing all my games to get set for a trip.
Thank you all for the information posted! I'm sure I'll be back doing another search shortly! -

Hmmmm...... Well that's certainly the 'involved' way of going about it, LOL! I guess my reply was inadequate, huh? You might want to add a bit for the folks who don't have USB flash drives handy.
(gee wiz.....)
How's it going K2solbri, are ya done yet?

WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
What do you have in mind that can be eliminated from the process I outlined?
Most first timer's need everything spelled out in a lot of detail and as we have learned with a member that bought a GT783. Some buy too much machine.
Do you know of anyone that doesn't have a USB or 2 flash drives in the year 2012.
I highly recommend the Transcend USB 3.0 JetFlash 760 in 4GB for OS installation.
I'm changing over all my USB 2.0 for USB 3.0
DVD installation is just slow and old school.
USB gets the job done in 1/3 the time it takes a DVD to do it.
ODDs are obsolete.
A DVD can be used for the Windows installation part but the Intel RST really needs to be on a USB stick to install it properly at the add driver screen.
After new folks get a few clean installs under their belts they will start to cut corners and run into errors.
This mostly occurs when the OS is burnt onto a crap quality DVD,the disk is not cleanly formatted with old partitions still remaining and secondary drives are physically attached during the clean installations. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Meh..... Ok.
I see things a bit differently on a couple of those points, but whatever floats your boat.

Hi guys, I started reading some of this thread but eventually skipped a few hundred pages and read the last 50 or so right up to here. For the past couple weeks I've been doing research on getting a new gaming laptop. I had ideally wanted to spend under $1250 and was about to purchase the ASUS G53SW-XA1 whcih was $1229 but it sold out the day I was going to buy it! Unfortunately the same priced newer model upgraded the vid card from the GTX 460M to the 560M, however they went with the gimped 560M which only has a 128-bit rate (2gb), and I decided it just wasn't worth getting. After looking at a few more laptops and considering the absolute most I'd be willing to spend is 1500-1600, I am now between 2 laptops:
ASUS G53SX-DH71 ( Amazon.com: ASUS G53SX-DH71 Full HD 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop - Republic of Gamers (Black): Computers & Accessories)
and
MSI GT780DX-406US ( Amazon.com: MSI G Series GT780DX-406US 17.3-Inch Laptop: Computers & Accessories)
I have almost completely made my mind up on going with the MSI, however on these last few pages I've found out about a new model coming out soon! I am going to wait at least another week before pulling the trigger regardless, so I'm sure by then there should be more info, but what would you guys do in my shoes? Buy one now or wait until the new models come out? Do you guys think any of them will be under $1600 with better specs than the one I listed above?
Thanks in advance and I look forward to being a future MSI first-time owner! -
I ended up replacing my own RAM to fix the problem and have to do clean install of Windows because apparently they install defective version of Windows that missing tons of files.
Don't get me wrong, I love the laptop spec, and it run great when it works. Now that mine is working, I pretty much replaced my desktop as my main computer. But I really don't want you to have to go through what I did. May be you will luck out and get a good one so you can always take that chance. It is a nicely well spec laptop. Aside from the built quality issues, my two complains are the lack of button for the DVD drive and the lack of caplock light. -
Anyway, thanks for putting up that guide it was very helpful for someone new at install Windows 7. It's been many years since I built my own machine.
It is very annoying that all manufacture now doesn't include full Windows disc for clean install or doesn't even come with restore disc and you have to do your own burn set. -
hey folks, proud owner of a gt780r-012. The front bezel of the keyboard (between the mouse and keyboard is popping up and it's quite annoying, I've pushed it down for it to just pop back up a second later. Does anyone know of a fix for this?
I attempted searching Google and this thread but wasn't able to find anything useful. By pulling off the control panel and removing the keyboard, will I be able to remove the bezel as well and just tape or glue it back down. I've never removed anything on the machine and it's the only minor issue I have with this otherwise nearly perfect machine
Thanks so much in advance -
The reason I ask is because I'm having multiple issues with my laptop (sent it in for RMA twice, still not fixed) and in order to ask for a completely new machine, I was told by MSI tech support to call the RMA Dept... which is impossible. THe RMA Dept seems to only be manned by one dude named Calvin who is either gone to meetings or is simply not even answering the phone or returning voicemails.
I know Dell used to have a "lemon policy" where if you had to send back your computer 3 times, they would simply replace you with a new machine. Not sure if MSI has one or if they will only comply once I make enough noise.
I'm afraid MSI will just give me the run-around until my warranty expires and then I'll really be screwed!
Thanks!
UPDATE: Called the RMA Dept, actually got through, told the guy my troubles and he transferred me to a phone line that immediately went dead and hung up on me! Frustrated, I called the tech support line, and explained my story. Here's the run-down.
- No such "lemon policy" at MSI. People have been known to send back their computers 5, 6, 7 or more times for RMA repair...
- My only solution is to keep sending it back for RMA until my problem is fixed.
- I opened my third RMA and will be shipping away my rig on Monday.
Wish me luck.... -
Don't know if you guys know, but there is a way to hide the star on the desktop. This program is available from January. Here is the link: AdF.ly - shrink your URLs and get paid! . To hide it at windows startup make a shortcut to the .exe in the startup folder from start menu.
p.s. When it is hidden, all s-bar functions... function.
p.s. 2 Here is the original thread http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=155915.0 -
I really wish I could, because it does seem nice to have that guarantee and have them upgrade the ram or something, but that isn't an option for me. I am buying the computer halfway on credit, and the only credit card I have right now is an amazon store card with $800. If one of them offered financing I gladly would, but so far I havent found one that does.. and amazon does have a great return policy.
Either way my question wasnt really where to buy it, if not what would you do knowing the new models are coming out soon?... Wait for it or just buy now? -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yours is a dilemma we all face, as new technologies and new models are always just around the next corner. The current models present new technologies, and they will not be obsolete when the new models arrive. Likewise, the new models will present even newer technologies, but performance gains, if any, I suspect will be marginal at best. One thing for sure, if you continue to ponder the question at hand, you can find yourself in a perpetual limbo of indecision, never buying anything. I know..... done that, been there..... more than once, LOL!
Ultimately, the choice will be yours...... let us know what you decide, and good luck.

I'm planning on buying GT780DX next week
However, I'm wondering, how big is the difference between 580M and 570M :/
right now I'm deciding to spend some $ to get SSD and 72% glossy for the 780($1800ish), or remvoe the blu ray/2nd HD of the GT783R and get it a bit cheaper($1950ish). -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
On a few early GT780 models it was a reported issue that this plastic piece didn't have enough double sided tape applied at the factory to hold it down and the tape wasn't sticky enough.
You'll need to remove the Touch Control Bar and the Keyboard to get at it to apply new and better double sided tape.
Refer to the 1st post in this forum for instruction by Ken from GenTech PC on how to remove the keyboard. -

IMO,the GTX580M graphics will give the notebook a bit more longevity.
If you're an avid gamer then it's all about the GPU and getting every possible fps.
I've been using Windows 8 Consumer Preview on the stock 750GB hard drive while I have Windows 7 0n a 240GB SATA III SSD that's now collecting dust since the W8CP arrived.
