IMO, an optional SSD will be the single greatest improvement you can make, that will enhance performance in a way you can immediately see, in real time. Overall, the system will feel quicker, and much more responsive..... as boot times, program opening, closing, and system shut-down times are vastly improved. I always tell folks, once you have gone this path, you'll never want to go back to the way of the HDD.

To get an idea of this, just watch some of the 'HDD vs SSD' videos on YouTube.

If you can afford it, I would also consider a CPU upgrade as well. This upgrade's improvement will not seem so readily perceivable, but when doing complex calculations or massive operations, the gains can be huge. Recently, I ran MemTest86 on a GT780 & GT783..... same memory brand, size, and type. One notebook was equipped with the 2670QM processor, and the other a 2860QM...... which completed the test a full 6 minutes faster. When considering the number of operations within this 6 minutes, this is quite significant.

Anyhow, good luck with your notebook selection.

    :)

16GB..... stock Elixir memory, 1 complete pass - all 11 test, latest MemTest86 ISO, 2670QM took 37 minutes, 2860QM took 31 minutes...... both tested flawlessly.

Does anyone know if a GT780 C-Panel will fit on a 1761 barebones? I only have pictures to go by, but it looks like it *may* fit. Wondering if anyone would know any better, though. If nobody knows, I'd be willing to waste $100 to give it a try. For science, of course.

My question would be..... why & where would you get the GT780 touch panel from? Plus the firmware is different, so even if it fit (which I doubt), not sure you would get full functionality anyhow.

Looking at the design of the C-Panel, it looks like the barebones touch panel would fit, not sure though.

Also, I fail to see what a chunk of plastic and metal has to do with "firmware"

EDIT: My main reason for wanting to do this is so i can get the superior mouse buttons from the GT780. The the one on this barebones is too difficult to use, especially near the middle (because it's a single piece of plastic and not separated in the middle)

EDIT 2: On closer inspection, it looks like the barebones touch panel WONT fit after all, bummer. I can only hope for a broken 780 for parts or someone like RK getting touch panels in

    Hey Rob,

In your link, the upper case is labeled "C" panel, whereas the "D" panel is the lower case assembly. When I referred to the "C" panel, I meant the upper case. This is all a moot point, though, because the touch panel on the barebones will not fit on the GT780 case, and there would probably be other issues.

Guess I'm stuck with this unibutton for the mouse

Just so people are aware, my machine with 2 750gb raid 0 hard drives is having issues. The drive in slot 2 keeps crapping in and out (almost like a loss of power). The machine would crash as a result. A couple reboots and it would be fine.

I've since swapped it over to raid 1 and every now and then I get the notice that the backup drive was lost. I'm traveling so can't return it yet.

    OOPS!!!
Sorry, forgot they changed the part naming on some models. What was the "C" panel is now "middle cover" and the top case is the "C" panel on this model.

I was using the older model naming when i typed that out....

So I just got my laptop back from RMA, I noticed that the sound is cutting in and out and sometimes not working at all. I am trying to figure out what the settings should be for my speakers in the speaker setup or Reaktek audio manager. Can anyone else me out please? I don't have any external speakers hooked up.

    Thanks in advance ;)

Hmmmm, I was going to update yesterday, but got side tracked with something else. Perhaps the Gods were with me..... anyone else experience this with the latest Nvidia driver?

SeriousBam, can you give us more info on the conditions that brought on the freeze and BSOD's? Launching a game, in game, benchmarking, system boot, running other programs, what? If gaming, what games?

Also, did you only update the Nvidia driver, or did you install others too? What notebook & GPU do you have?

sometimes new drivers could be buggy.

285.62 for example, Windows Media center black screen and won't play videos.

My recommendation is go back to the last known working drivers and wait for next release.

When you install new NVIDIA drivers you should do a custom installation, uncheck the parts you don't want and check the box to clean install the new driver by removing the old one.

I install only the driver itself and PhysX

I'm mostly using Windows 8 Consumer Preview now with 296.17 on my GT780DX but I did update 2 other Windows 7 x64 Notebooks for family members and my desktop with 296.10 that have worked fine for the few hours they all ran last night.

Also see NVIDIA forums if others are having the same issues you are.

No need to RMA the whole notebook.

Just isolate which module(s) is bad and contact the place you got it from about getting replacement.

i just heard Marvel is releasing a new controler chp for the crucial M4 SSD which will support many new enhancements including writing at 500mb/s which is double that of current M4's

    source : AnandTech - Marvell's 3rd Generation 88SS9187 SSD Controller

Question is: can our GT780's motherboard handle it, can a bios or firmware make our motherboard sata 3.1?

Will a GT78x disassembly video do? If so, look in the 'Videos' section HERE.

I am not gonna search the thread for you..... but the video covers tear-down of the notebook, and you should be able to find what you are looking for.

Yes, there have been a number of cases where the stock 'Elixir' memory has failed MemTest86, but I would say this memory has been error-free for most.

Question is, do you feel comfortable troublshooting and replacing memory yourself?

If not, then yes RMA the notebook to MSI, telling them of your MemTest86 results. Did you purchase this notebook from one of our great forum resellers? If so, they should be able to assist you in quickly resolving this issue.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

My experience doing RMA with MSI was not pleasant. They ignored my questions about what was being done about my laptop in email, didn't return my phone call and after a month and $80 shipping I get my laptop back with just wiped HDs. I called them back and they suggested I RMA it again. They also emailed me trying to charge me $150 for something that wasn't even broken to begin with. I did a little research on MSI RMA and of course I know people aren't going to get online to post their good experiences, I found that is was not uncommon for MSI to wipe a hard drive and call it a repair. I would do whatever I could to avoid RMA if it's something like a mem stick.

Living in a small country and very close to the MSI notebook service center has it's advantages.

I've walked into the service center several times and received excellent service.

This is while being a foreigner and having poor Korean language skills.

On busy days there's a nice lounge with free coffee and internet to wait in while the unit is being serviced.

The staff is very friendly and helpfull.

I dont think GT780 or GT783 able to handle " heavy 3D modeling " , you should go for Sager 9270 or m18x for heavy 3d modeling

I use building 3d software's with environmental 3d effects and the result is acceptable until the shadow effects came in which cause drop down.

Well which is you run it 1080p lol i forgot to mention it ...

The added SATA 3.1 feature will mostly be for mSATA SSDs in mini pci-e slots..

mSATA is the main item in the 3.1 specification that was finalized in the middle of 2011..

The SATA 3.2 specification is the latest one that adds SATA Express and
    µSSD

SATA III is part of the series 6 Intel chipsets and every new version of the Intel chipset software brings improvements to the SATA bus.

    Newest WHQL version is 9.3.0.1020

Yes, I can do that memory troubleshooting. I bought it from GentechPC.
I would like to share my experience with MSI, I already emailed them twice regarding my warranty activation, but it's been 6months now, I didn't recieve any replies & I keep checking my MSI account ( http://www.msimobile.com/productreg/productlogin.aspx) , until this very moment, the status still pending. :(

looking forward to my new MSI....ordered from xotic..going to be a big step up from my present ASUS...(as you can see in my signature)

I saw some bags mentioned in the OP, but I was wondering if there are ones guaranteed to fit the gt780, I have an ogio backpack, now and my ASUS n71 is a tight fit, I am sure the GT won't fit...(plan to give it to my wife for her dell 17r)

I looking more for backpacks, not messenger/shoulder bag styles. i know ebags.com recommends backs for you based on your laptop but read it is still a hit or miss...

Long story short here I got this laptop last week tried vertex 3 240gb drive and it was a fail. Drive didn't work with the laptop. Replaced with a intel 520 series 240 gb and I was finally on my way. Installed my own os with no bloatwear my windows 7 has issues with wmp so second format time around (thats one helleva story) I finally got my setup correct. Been adding programs and setting it up for me to head back north.. Now today was the first time laptops been out of the house.. Been travelling all day sitting in motel room and it was as if my battery was complete dead? I thought the machine was dead like the flight killed it or something? After leaving to get some food the thing got a little charge into it? This is a speculation so far the battery is at 100% and it hasn't shut off so far? But it was having a heart attack won't boot up or it would just make it in and reboot.. Don't want to give up my laptop im in the middle of north working for the next 3 years man.. Wasted 1 week doing this beast up with a acronis on my storage. Don't wanna give it up just want to hear some others say its the battery!

I am going to buy a laptop either ASUS Republic of Gamers G74SX-AH71 or MSI GT780DXR-447US.

I don't know which one I should get. I am not a heavy gamer, but I play Winning11 (Pro Evolution Soccer)a lot, and watch a movie.

    I am offered ASUS G74SX-AH71 at $1250 and GT780DXR-447US at $1100. Both are brand-new.

The spec for MSI is that, i7-2670, 12gig RAM, gtx 570-3g vram, 2x500gig of HDD(RAID 0 <-- I don't know what this means though).
    For ASUS, i7-2670, 16gig Ram, 560-3g vram, 750g of HDD(7200rpm)

It seems like MSI has a better spec and cheaper price, but I never purchase the laptop from MSI, so I am just a little concerned about having it without hearing from you guys.

Is both items of the price that I am offered reasonable price?

I also heard that MSI G780 have only one fan cooler inside while g74 has two and good cooling system with less noise. Because of one fan, does it make a lot of noise to keep it cool, and get easily hot during the heavy load?

One more question. My budget for a laptop is about $1300, and I heard the news that new G75 is coming soon, but the price has not been set yet.
Do you think it is better for me to wait for G75 or new MSI G series rather than purchasing either one of them now?

would it be like an out-dated purchasing if I will buy GT780DXR-447US now since GT780DXR-447US was released in 2010?

I have never purchased this high-end laptop before, so I don't know much about it. If you could tell me what you think or any advice, that will be very helpful to me to decide.

    Thank you :)

sorry if I disturb you.. I think I posted this article wrong board. It is shown as reply to some other article. I wish I could erase it, but can't find how :(

Last night was my last night home just before i shut it down i put this new driver on and its garbage.....
Almost like letting a virus on the rampant in the hd man. I have been fighting to get into my laptop for the past 5Hrs now thought it was battery related have no test tools on me travelling/ so i am guessing and trial and error. Back of my mind keeps pointing to this driver ever since i added it all hell broke apart.. If some others would like to try it and get back to me if its doing the same crap that would help solve my issues. I have removed the driver within the past hour and seems to stay running with no glitchy......
