If you are really committed to making this unit your next investment - please take the time (a week or two) to do your homework. Read everything here in this post and absorb the knowledge of those who have been there. At least read the first and last third. Start somewhere, show some initiative dammit! The New GT70 will cost more than GT783 around 1000 more i think since it was 3000 GBP in cebit .

But the upgrades are must have because you get additional hardrives and killer network on LAN and wireless which none of the notebooks out there have it yet.

    Imagine TWO Intel 520 240GB + a 750 Seagate momentus XT . Raid 0 SSD awesomeness

I would like corrrect on the G74sx

Yeah it looked cool and two fans but MSI GT783/780 heatsinks and turbo fan is way better i suppose

    Budget > go for G74sx
    Mid budget > GT783/780
    High budget > M18x or Sager 9270

and i dont think any of those are releasing until Q3

Also sometimes it's not the defective RAM, it could also be just one of the stick loose. The socket on the right under the keyboard seems always get loose.

try re-seat the RAM follow the disassembly video posted by eelkered see how it goes.

I thought my uninstall reinstall Nvidia verde driver worked since I did´nt get any BSOD, until now! 2 nights ago I just got Homefront installed and got to play like 15 minutes and BLAM, blue screen!

Didnt use the computer until yesterday. Called the reseller and they wanted me to fill an RMA, took me 15 minutes again and BLAM, just as I got to read that the RMA was sent succesfully, the BSOD came again.

This time I took a picture to show you guys, since I have no idea what numbers I should be looking for. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Link to pic
    http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1493/bsodmq.jpg

I did the memtest but found no errors, BUT I did notice that my WEI score does something (not) funny. I do a lot of WEI´s when I am bored, and my scores were before

    Processor 7,4
    RAM 7,7
    Graphics 7,3
    Gaming graphics 7,3
    Primary HD 7,7

I know the WEI score is not that big of a deal and is no good in benchmarking or anything, but I find it odd that I now keep scoring 7,6 RAM and 7,4/7,5 Primary HD (Stock SSD).

    Could it be the SSD?

Can someone tell me what the difference between a DXR and DX model are? Since when customizing the two versions the DXR has very nearly the exact same specs but is always much higher in price.

Also, what is the difference between the 570M 3GB GDDR5 and the 570M 1.5GB GDDR5?

Thanks in advance, I know the first question is extremely head scratch worthy as something most likely painfully obvious but I must be overlooking something quite simple.

I doubt it is the ssd. If the RAM checked ok, then it could one of many issues from a faulty motherboard (rare but still possible). The only thing you can do is what you are already doing. Send it in for an RMA.

    Hello everyone,

sorry but I need your help :D .

Someone with GTX580M could tell me if you have problems of throttling?

The GPU can exceed 78 ° without losing performance and framerate?

What is the maximum temperature reaching your GTX580M?

    Thanks to all

Overall a nice review, but I noticed this contributing editor generally covers 'Monitors & HDTV's'. Bulky? Loud Fan(s)? One has to wonder if this guy has dealt with many 17.3" hi-end GPU'ed gaming notebooks.

Thus far there have been no reports of throttling in this model, and temps/framerates have been stable. However, there have been a couple reports of the 180W PA cutting out when pushed to it's limits. MSI Taiwan's R&D is aware of these reports, and they are currently looking into the PA.

Personally, I have not experienced any of these issues, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. I am hoping MSI will consider making a 220W PA available.

    Try this.....

From "Add/Remove Programs", uninstall MSI nVidia VGA OC Tool..... uninstall S-Bar...... reboot.

    1.) Install S-Bar from HERE.
2.) Install MSI nVidia VGA OC Tool from HERE.

Re-boot again, and then test the P1 function button. On screen you should now see the Turbo TDE engine activate, without cutting itself off again. Also, the P1 button should remain lit on the touch-bar.

    :)

Hmmmmm, It should be working. After a fresh system boot, do you see the NV OC Tool icon in your systray? Do you have the NV OC Tool disabled in 'start-ups'? Now I am beginning to think you have an input issue...... like perhaps the P1 button of the touchbar is malfunctioning. BUT, after seeing THIS, I also have to wonder if the problem is not 'user' induced.

funny you mention those chipset drivers, i happen to have those right here and after installing running the setup then i look at the Version for Intel(R) HM67 Express Chipset Family LPC Interface Controler - 1C4B

in the device manager, and it still shows 2010-11-20 v9.2.0.1016 ...

1st don't mess too much with benchmarks, it taxes your hardware to the max, i do it once every fresh windows install and maybe when there's new drivers but rarely, that's it.

Especially the SSD, its nice tech for sure but it gets used up when you benchmark it to hell for no reason. Wear levelling will help but you don't want premature failure just for some eye candy scores.

2nd check your firmware on it, if its a Sandforce controler, they got a fix for those bsod's they experienced last year. Check your brand's website, usually in the support section. or write it down in your reply and someone will check for you.

you can find out your current firmware by going in the windows device manager from the control panel, then click the [+] next to Disk drives

Find your SSD and double click it, go in the last tab should be Details, then in the property list find the one called "Hardware Ids", the 1st string it shows should have your firmware info, like this (example for a crucial drive):

sorry for the late reply but I saw someone else's recent reply that referred to your message.

I think what's going on is that the BIOS is set up to enable persistent USB3.0 ports for powering/charging phones, etc. Since it's always on (even when powered off and not connected to AC), it's obviously consuming power from the battery as any switching supply is going to be most inefficient when no load or lightly loaded. Eventually, the power supply parasitics cause the battery to completely drain. I would suggest turning this feature OFF in the BIOS and then see how the battery life goes.

If this is the case, it's indeed a very poor performing device for charging while on battery. I believe USB3.0 specifies 5V@1A for charging (5W), and the battery is something like [email protected] (112Wh) - meaning with 5W charging full-time and 100% conversion efficiency, the battery should drain in 22hrs. Now, consider a very poor power supply conversion efficiency of 60%, meaning it'd fully discharge after 13 hours.

Let's take a step back and assume the parasitics only consume 0.5W ([email protected]). With a 112Wh battery, it would fully discharge after 224 hours (9 days) or 10% per day. Is that what you're seeing?

I can't remember the BIOS settings as my MSI GT780DX is in the process of 2nd RMA from MSI back to XOTIC (purchased in December and I've had it about 2 weeks now - all other times it's been in transit to/from RMA). I cannot say anything bad at all about XOTIC, they have worked with me every step of the way though.

The series 6 chipsets were rushed to market and chipset software has been fixing bugs ever since.

All of Intel's updates are like that. They have parts that are updated and parts that are not. They only update things in your system.

Some have only bug fixes,AHCI & Raid enhancements or add support for new hardware that you can't see or for hardware you don't have.Alot of things are hidden.

Version 8.3.1020 update shows "Changed USB Name String and Moved to system Devices" that you may not find in Device Manager > System

I updated the MEI to v8.0.3.1427 but System only shows 8.0.0.1262.

Different combinations of the Intel RST and Chipset software can effect SSD performance.

I'm watching closely reviews of the new SanDisk 240GB Extreme SSD where different reviewers are getting different 4K numbers because they are using different driver/software versions and combinations.

It's possible the driver, I remember people were having minor issues on Asus G74 at login screen with newer drivers.

maybe you can try different drivers to see if the problems goes away.

no its not a driver problem its a windows problem, its happened through out since XP, i just never heard of a fix for it, so i was wondering if anyone had heard of one here.

its pretty sloppy of M$ to force a flash like that.

I have the 780R with the 2630 proc and 560 graphics card. From what I've read so far, I should be able to upgrade my processor to the new Ivy Bridge but can someone confirm that? Also, is it possible to upgrade the graphics card to say the 570 or even the 580?

No, It's not possible to move from one generation of processors to another on a single motherboard. To do that, you need to install a new motherboard with the chipset of the new Ivy Bridge.

For the graphics card upgrading, you will need to mod the heat sink before it can get re-seated. It is not impossible, but it'll be costly and you need to have some modding experience.

Thanks much for the reply. I thought it might have sounded too good to be true, especially for the graphics card. I understand that you can't upgrade CPU's in a laptop, but I was under the assumption that Intel was making Ivy Bridge backwards compatible with Sandy Bridges 1155 (HM67?) chipset and since we have physical access to the CPU on these machines (I've owned a few laptops over the years and never had access to the CPU, it was always hidden away by something or another) I thought I lucked out.

Yes you have access to the cpu, it is just that if you want to upgrade the processor, then it must be is the same chipset/socket family and the motherboard/bios must support it.
You can upgrade the gpu, but as stated it is a pain to get it to fit physically and probably not worth it. Additionally, you would need upgrade to the 180w power adapter to supply enough power.

    Hey Guys,

So I recently bought this MSI GT780DX and I bought it for gaming. I noticed today while playing SWTOR and WoW that some keyboard strokes are getting skipped... For example, i'll press strafe, move up, and jump at the same time (e,w,space) and it won't register. Or.... I'll press, 2,w,e and it won't register. Or 3,w,e.

It's kind of a big deal, and for spending this much on a laptop based on gaming it can't be normal.

I have a friend who also has this laptop, and he's running through the same issue.

If I could get some help that'd be awesome! Thanks.

I actually called MSI right now about it. And they tested it on their laptops... And they noticed the exact same thing. So I don't think they could RMA the problem, it'd just have to be a returning problem.

It is supposed to register up to 10 keys, so i'm hoping this is fixed soon. I don't want to return the laptop for a stupid issue on keys! :O

It supports 1866 and it's PNP, you don't need to overclock the RAM.
