You would need to find the NEC Chip on the notebook motherboard to absolutely confirm the chip.

On MSI download sites for the gaming notebooks are the older 2.1.28.0 driver that is only for these chips. The 2.1.32.0 is the WHQL update to that version.

The other NEC/Renesas uPD720201 and uPD720202 use a different series of drivers anf firmware. They are not used in any MSI notebook.

****You have the same NEC uPD720200 controller as I have in my GT780DX so you can update the firmware and the driver to 2.1.32.0

DETERMINING WHICH DRIVER & FIRMWARE VERSION IS INSTALLED NOW
[Windows Vista and Windows 7 and Windows XP]
    1. On the Start menu, click All Programs, Renesas,
USB3.0 Host Controller Driver, and then USB3.0 Hsot Controller Utility.
    2. Show USB3.0 Host Controller Information.

In Windows 8 Consumer Preview the Renesas Utility is on the Metro Screen.

i'd just settle for making the mouse pad disabled on starting windows.

That option exists in the mouse pad driver, but it doesn't work when plugging a usb mouse.

i click on disable mouse when another usb mouse is plugged in and doesn't do anything.

Yes, but it needs some modification. Meaker will be documenting his upgrade but on a 16F2 barebones.

It's not really any different from installing a traditional platter hard drive.

Remove any other drives before installing the OS on it.

Check that the firmware is the current version.

Many SSDs don't have the ability to update the firmware when it's the boot drive.

After it has the OS installed on it you can tweak it.

Do a google seach for:"The SSD Optimization Guide"

I'm forbidden by NBR to link to the site that hosts the guide.

    This post may help:

Be aware that newer MSI utilities can be found on the GT70 site than those that are on the GT780DX site that work on the GT78x series.

Are you sure about that? The only SSDs we found we could not update the firmware with it as the boot drive were the OCZ Vertex 3 drives.

Please keep in mind that your descriptive term of the word "whooosh", is in voilation of forum rules..... even when modified to avoid obscenity filtering.

That said, YES, Smitty123's post on this is a nice contribution indeed! Though I do not ' necessarily' advocate making such alterations in lieu of the manufacturer's intent, this will be very helpful to those who find the problem an annoyance. As such, I have added his helpful tip to the threads lead post in the 'How-To' section.

    :)

OMG! You want one of these notebooks REAL BAD, don't you?

Hey guys! Well, after owning my GT780DXR for almost 4 months, I have been experiencing the dreaded BSOD the last couple of days :( It happens whenever, sometimes when I'm watching videos, sometimes when I'm gaming, sometimes while I'm browsing, or just opening windows explorer. :( :(

After reading about it here, and elsewhere, it might seem I have this memory problem I see others have had?

My frame rate refreshing is rather bad near the top of the screen, when browsing and watching videos.

So I might have to send it back where I bought it, and who knows, if they can't fix it for me, they might hook me up with a store credit or something?

(In the case of the latter, I see they have a new laptop, which is cheaper than mine was, and the specs are better... I think. I mean, the nvidia 670m 3gb > nvidia 570m right? And i7-3610QM > i7-2670QM ? This new laptop is the GT70, should I maybe get that instead of trying to get a new GT780dxr if possible?)

Man, I'm in Norway, so I'm guessing I'll end up being without a laptop for almost a month if I turn it in. I'll run the memtest just to be sure this is the problem, if not, I'll just go for a format + reinstall of win7

    I've had 0x000000C4, 0x00000019, 0x00000024, 0x0000001A messages.

I have not yet ran a memory test, will do so tomorrow (it's 4am here atm :)), and I had the last stable driver installed, the one from march, but 5 mins ago I installed the same one that you have :), we'll see if that helps.

Some of the BSODs have happened while I've been away from my PC, and some while I've been using it.

I think they may be software related.

Have you ever done a clean install of Windows 7 x64?

    A few things to try:

Turn off Anti Virus.Norton used to cause the 0x000000C4 a while back.

    I use MSE 4

    Run chkdisk

Run sfc /scannow from administrator command prompt

Install CCleaner and click on registry to fix registry error.

hello people, i had a issue a month ago with my power adapter making noise. Stressed out i tucked the laptop away and now am ready to figure the issue out. My ac/adapter not only makes noise but turns itself off and back on/ switching to " plugged in" and not plugged in ( runs off battery not mains) Im not talking about " plugged in not charging" - altho it does that even at 20% battery power and it never stays on battery longer then 1 second it just switches back and forth. The laptop also turns off on its own ONLY when plugged in. Runs Perfectly fine off of battery power. MSI wants me to RMA my entire laptop and I rather not.( tower took a dump on me ) So The only help I have gotten here is to try a different power supply. Any good/fast online site that sells MSI gt780?? Power supply/ Or do you think its in my best interest to RMA the entire laptop?

with all the power shorts and problems this might have caused, i think it would be prudent to accept the RMA and ship the whole kit'n'kaboodle to msi , have them verify the laptop and power brick.

you don't want to realize in a month that your laptop is having weird unexplained problems too.

maybe you can borrow one from a friend.

If the place you bought the notebook from can't or won't replace the AC Adapter quickly then....

If it's not the Adapter and is a motherboard issue a RMA will be a must do.

The best course of action as Smitty suggests is RMA the whole unit.

You can contact any of the resellers listed in post #1,Gentech,Power Notebooks or XOTIC, and ask them to ship a new MSI 180W AC Adapter the fastest way if you want to go that root first..

Will do that first thing in the morning. Also... putting my ear to the keyboard I also hear a similar noise the power adapter is making but not nearly as loud... Is this a flux or motherboard issue you think?? when i unplugg the power cord my laptop does not make this sound.

Hey, I haven't done a clean install, I was thinking of maybe doing the recovery that's already "on here"? I use MSE also, and sfc /scannnow sorta just stops after about 10%, says it can't finish. I'll try to run chkdsk now.

As smitty stated,a clean install is best but if you're currently pressed for time do the recovery and see the results.

Eventually you'll need to do the clean install.

Download all the newest needed drivers, utilities and software prior to the clean install and put them on a USB stick.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

The problem seems to be that I have 2 x 750 gb hdds set up in RAID 0 (came like that out of the box). I divided this space into 2 partitions, 1 of 500gb (where the OS was), and 1 of 1000gb (where my data was). I was thinking, in case anything goes wrong, I'll just format the 500gb partition and re-install windows.

Well... I can't. Win7 re-install stops, and the error seems to be caused by RAID (or so google says :)). So now I can't access my data (or can I?) and I can't reinstall Windows, without formatting the 2nd partition?

Anyone know if I'll lose all my data when I turn off RAID?

edit: Someone also suggested that I might solve this by adding RAID drivers during the windows installation. I'll check the first post to see if I can find them there :)

edit2: Well, crap. Got a hold of memtest86+, and got about 300k errors in 20 minutes, and now after 75 mins, that errorcount is at 602624 errors... Guess my memory is messed up. Ah man, now I have to return it, and they fix it, and then send it back, and it's the weekend, and I won't have it back for like 3-4 weeks, and my exams are coming up... and well... living WITHOUT A PC FOR 3-4 WEEEEEKS?!?!?!?!

Just try removing the RAM sticks and test one at a time.
There should be at least one faulty stick.
Install your windows, pull your data, and then you could buy additional RAM, or RMA.

I set mine to the same color scheme and losed the lid which put it to sleep.

I opened the lid and still had the red-blue-green.

i wanna believe you WTP, but here's a weirder one, in KLM go in standard&normal profile, then choose the inner most row of colors, then make it sleep and when the lid is re-opened the 2nd inner most row is chosen by magic for any color! All colors. i don't get why it would switch like that.

Another related bug: in KLM go in standard/normal profile, this one is only for green color, the 2nd green block shows up as yellow on the keyboard instead of lighter green. Which are the same color as yellow's 2nd block(row). Another bug.

attached pix are blurry but that's my fault for not using the flash and no tripod, i wanted the colors to really show up. You can see the colors and the KLM wheel on screen, i highlighted the area chosen in paint.

    Hello fellow users!

I use my laptop with an external monitor and keyboard when I'm at home, and the machine stands in the shelf therefore I don't have easy access to the P1 button.
I am looking for a way to enable/disable Turbo Mode from windows, without to have to press the P1 button.

I have been searching for this on the internet but found nothing...

If anyone could help me with this matter it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards.

I think there is a problem with my power plug in on my 780R. I have to either push the power adapter up or down for it to make contact with the adapter to where it will actually charge it. The laptop is used so it could be the adapter but it just seems like when I put a bit of pressure on the plug it makes contact and starts charging.

So what can I do about this? I was thinking of buying a new power plug-in off ebay just to see if it will fix the problem. Is this a common problem with the plugin on the laptop?

it should fit snuggly so i'm thinking if your connector is loose inside the laptop that would account for the lack of contact. ask one of the good resellers on the front page maybe they can fix it for you for cheap. or better yet, its not that old of a computer you might still have some warranty left on it. check with www.msi.com or MSI Online Customer Service and contact them with your serial number to see if you qualify.

I was able to duplicate the 3 green bug.
    1st try = green-green-yellow
    2nd try = green-green-white
    3rd try = green-green-green
    Change to duel color
    Exit KLM
    Open KLM
    Select Standard Normal
    1st try = green-green-green

The internal power connector is soldered to the motherboard. This connector is a bit delicate so if someone trips on the power brick cord it can break the soldered points. When the graphics card is removed the power plug on the motherboard is exposed for examination.

If you are not handy at delicate soldering then get it serviced under warranty.

Look in the taskbar by the clock for the THX icon. You may need to click on the little white triangle.

If it's not there get the newest version found on the new GT70 utility downloads.

after using this laptop for 4 months now, i feel i've got the hang of it using it everyday, and i've got some observations on usage of the keyboard and mouse pad for the msi people if they're reading this.

Note to MSI Engineers & Steelseries Designers: put the Fn key on the right side of the keyboard where i can use it with my thumb and HOME/END keys make em seperate from PgDn/PgUp they're just too usefull to be used with the Fn key, and put the windows key on the left.

i'm always having to use both hands to use what used to be a quick shortcut like winkey+e opens Explorer or if i want to select a word or sentence of text it used to be quick and painless now its overly complicated to select words in a sentence to copy&paste them elsewhere. have to use both hands and do hand gymnastics to do something that only took 1 and worked fine before just to include the Fn key now in the procedure with the home/end keys.

Freaking bad call on whoever designed the keyboard. It looks snazzy but so dang complicated.

And bring back the windows key on the left, no i don't open the start menu in games by accident ! i just don't press down on the keys with my palm that much where the windows key is/was/should be. we both know thats just a gimmick anyway. it might be valid on a desktop keyboard but not here on this laptop the steel series keyboard is recessed in the laptop , its set in lower than a normal keyboard so we don't need it to be away from the "gaming triangle".

And make it an island keyboard, seriously i'm always hitting the arrow keys while typing, put em more distant so you don't hit them by mistake, messing up my paragraphs.

And allow to leave turned off the mousepad via the s-bar at boot up rather than rely on the Synaptics driver to do it "when it senses a mouse plugged in" it doesn't work!! That messes up your gaming more than the windows key. having your thumb or palm of your hand fly over the mouse pad while trying to walk your character forward in game is gonna make it look up a the ceiling while your mouse is controlling the character.

Saved the best for last, why in the h*ll did you put 2 of the same keys " |\" ? One above the enter key and one on the right of the space bar. 1st these keys were used in dos allot more than they are these days and 2nd if anything this is the age of internet it would make better sense to have put a forward slash / than a backslash key \ there.

    /rant over

thanks and hope this can be fixed in the future.

i'm off trying to find a program to switch some keys around.

hi, i'm not sure what it is exactly you did, the problem is the 2nd picture should be more green than yellow. its the same yellow as the 3rd picture. while the 4th is the continuation of the green "column" on the wheel.

now if you set it to all green, sleep your puter, then wake it it will just go from green to yellow because it changed from 1st row of green on the wheel, the darkest, to the 2nd row by itself.
