Yes, a non-backlit keyboard from the barebone version.

If the fan is running normally you can open the bottom panel to see if the GPU screws are tighten.

Try NVIDIA Verde Beta driver v301.24

    Drivers - GeForce

Choose Custom Installation>uncheck parts not needed

Then check the box for clean install that removes the old driver.

is there a way to turn off and keep off the mousepad all together after booting?

i turn it off manually but come on, not every day.

And funny thing, it gets re-activated when coming back from locking the station (win+L).

    off means off.

Worst is the Synaptic driver doesn't turn it off when there's a usb mouse plugged in.

That feature is broken, is there a fix?.

just browsing on the intel website, came across the drivers for the Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 130

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21244

now of course we should wait for msi to update theirs to match, but i'm having some wifi probs with my 2wire POS modem, wondering if it would be safe to install these?

    Wireless_15.1.1_Ds64.exe Version:15.1.1 (driver only)
    or
    Wireless_15.1.1_s64.exe Version:15.1.1

What's the difference between the S and DS versions you ask ?

The "S" is the complete package inscluding the "DS" which for some reason means driver only and not Driver& Software as the name implies. Oh those crazy cookie ubergeeks at intel !

Also guessing the Intel My Wi-Fi Dashboard should work with it, it should as it's a Centrino Wireless-N 130 card we have in this thing.

yunno msi, it would have been a slick app to have installed, mostly for connected devices and hotspot creation but other features aswell.

Yall check the cool features and documentation at intel here Intel® My WiFi Dashboard - Ultra Wi-Fi Portability

Also checked rkcomputer.net, they only have the back lit version...

    edit...
I think I spoke too soon..I just found this and it should be ok right..?

I have an MSI GT780DXR, so that keyboard should be ok...?
Crap....rkcomputer.net wont ship just the keyboard to UK :(

When you say 'OC installer', I assume you are referring to the MSI NV OC VGA tool. I have installed the newer GT70 version of this, and everthing seems fine. Where did you hear that it was not compatible?

I guess this would depend on what you are doing. If stress testing or under conditions of OC, that temp is still withing a safe operational range. What are your temps under normal usage, gaming, or just a mild OC..... such as TDE only?
If you continue to stress the hardware to it's operational limits, you will only shorten the notebook's life, and asking for premature hardware failure. If 82c is a ' normal' operational temp, I would consider a repasting of the CPU & GPU, and a good cleanning of the cooling system. If this temp is but an occassional gaming, OC, or stress testing ' peak', I would'nt worry about it.

    :)

At first, I also found this an annoyance. Have you gone into the 'Mouse Properties' CP? Within these settings there is a check-box that will disable the touchpad when a usb mouse is detected. For Synaptic touchpads, go HERE, and for Sentelic go HERE. This seems to work fine for me. I use a mini USB mouse receiver which remains plugged-in at all times, so the touchpad always remains disabled with every boot. If this does not work for you, consider reinstalling the Synaptic driver, or see if you need to update this to a later version.

    :)

My notebook seller told me about it when i asked him.

I do not OC at all , i kept the default clock since i really want to use this notebook for very long time

( Next notebook must have at least dual graphics card or a water cooled desktop ) This target will be when my family move to a new house since my current room is damn small for a desktop

I play games such as Battlefield 3 on High Settings Multiplayer and The witcher 2 enhanced edition , will get around 80c after 1-2 hours of usage.

Right now i am so eager to play Diablo 3 Since i already installed the game and the settings are default on maximum and that gives me a thought , this notebook is good after all lol.

He1p, it sounds like your notebook is fine.....

Dual graphics cards? Been there done that.... several times, so I'd suggest you read up on 'stuttering'...... a common issue with dual card configurations. Presently I am waiting to hear more on the upcoming GTX-680M. The GTX-580M is already an awesome gamer notebook card, but the 680M will be a true Kepler, smaller die, less wattage, cooler, ergo more efficient, and far better performance. As such, I may have to consider moving up to a 680M GT70 pretty soon. I'll miss you guys, but I have a feeling I won't be able to resist speaking to Ken about another upgrade.

    Hi ALL
I took the 2 HDD out Then installed crucial 256 GB inside
then I delete d: to extend c:.After that, I updated firmware
I notice that the booting speed is not fast as I expect (It takes about 29 s )

when I check the ssd driver I found it windows standard driver

Is it normal speed? what should I do to extend the speed?
what should I do to install one of the 2 HDD?
do I have to do any thing with RAD?

    Sorry about my english
    Thanks all

But you just got your GT783 not too long ago ?

The only difference i can see is just the Super raid....

Just run two SSD raid 0 and still it beat the performance of mSata

hold on, did you copy your 2 raided HDD onto 1 SSD? Did you set your bios raid settings to AHCI ?

now if you want to try to get some speed, you may use the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers found on the msi website. but in the state your windows must be in, i wouldn't just yet.

Now of course if you did it the easy way and just ghosted(copied) your windows from 2hdd's to SSD , that's not gonna work too well, its still using the old drivers and might even have corruption since it was from 2 raided drives to 1 ssd via some program that might not handle raid too well.

You ready to supercharge your computer?

1st things 1st, i highly recommend starting over, properly.

You need to switch the bios raid mode to AHCI since you're going in single drive mode. You can install the 2nd hdd in the 2nd bay after win7 is re-installed so you don't get boot strap mix up.

    Read on for speed tips.

if you didn't change your bios before installing windows this time, start by doing that. You may not be able to boot back in after you do so best to move your docs and important files off to a usb key somewhere before doing that.

Now for your money, which is allot for an SSD, you want the best speeds.

My advice: delete all partitions and start fresh.

Starting fresh is always best. Gets you a clean fast system you can be proud of.

So get your recov dvds, you did make some didn't you ?

Ok so with just the SSD in, plop the 1st dvd in the drive, boot up and do a full computer factory reset by pressing F12 at bios boot screen and choose your dvd to boot with.

Enter the MSI recovery program and tell it to overwrite all partitions on the SSD not just the system partition if it gives you the choice.

That'll take about 25mins to half an hour to complete, then reboot and finish the windows part with the MSI bit of stuff it loads like the irst driver and the crapware like bing toolbar and magix softwares.

ok now you're rebooted 2 or 3 times and at the desktop.

Now you can see the difference an SSD makes.

You should be up and running pretty fast by then but you ain't done yet, so get to the msi website and download the latest drivers, starting with the chipset, irst, lan, wifi drivers, and of course video drivers always rebooting as needed. And the rest (bt, webcam usb3 etc) and you should be up and running much much faster.

Now, the irst stands for Intel Rapid Storage Technology, these are the drivers you want for speed.

They're at v11.1 official and i found the 11.5 Alphas to be even faster by 10mb/s in some cases but isn't complete and breaks some programs that depend on certain responses from drivers like s.m.a.r.t. stats.

The drivers are on the msi website or the 1st page on this thread. MSI Global ? Notebook - GT780DX(GT780DXR)

Then do windows updates. And you're done with re-installing windows. Now on to reinstalling your programs.

btw, a freshly installed win7 with stock drivers with the M4, booting time is 8 seconds flat.

After windows updates and after all my usual programs are installed, its going to go up to 10-12seconds which makes me a bit sad to load so much crap but c'est la vie !

The 680m is going to have the same tpd as the 580m. Flagship cards aren't supposed to run cool, but Maxwell will change that. Maxwell is when the real magic happens. :D

Who said anything about flagship cards running cool? I said cooler and more efficient, and to me this is a good thing. We'll see soon enough....

I have seen Nvidia's projections & timeline, and yes, I agree regarding Maxwell, but my intel says the 680M will have enough magic to peak my interest. I'll deal with Maxwell when the time comes. That will be a different animal indeed!

That is an Nvidia Based Roadmap. They do not actually reflect the Actual Performance. It is the same as AMD's or Nvidia's Video Card Performance Slides.

It is still Speculation at this point. That Nvidia Based Roadmap shows their 'expected' performance per watt but considering that Maxwell hasn't even taped out yet or even in early silicon revisions the Performance results are unknown at this point.

    Parted Magic Update
    Parted Magic 2012_05_14

    downloads ? Parted Magic

I've always had a problem booting Parted Magic from a USB stick in my GT780DX while booting it from a CD was fine.My other notebooks and desktop were fine, only the MSI had a problem

I use it to secure erase my SSDs which is the best method to clean a used SSD prior to a clean installation of Windows 7.Clean installs on dirty SSDs result in lower performance.

This new version extrated onto a USB stick works perfectly and it connects wirelessly to the Killer 1103 without issue using the embedded Firefox browser.

I have a gt780dxr and just installed a 2nd hard drive in the empty bay. I currently have a ssd as my primary drive and an external usb drive attached. The problem is the drive is not showing up? I checked computer management and it is not listed as one of the disks. Any idea why this is not showing up? Is there something in the bios I need to set or something I am missing?

    Thanks

hi jim, did you set the bios to ahci?

you might want to unplug the external and let it find the new drive alone, for detection of new hardware in device manager or reboot same thing.

if that fails, i'd reinstall intel rapid storage v11.1 on the msi site, it might force the detection.

I did go into the bios and set sata to ahci and the computer would not boot. I had to switch it back to raid, that is the only way the computer would boot. Not sure why that is happening.

I will try and unplug the external hard drive and see what happens and will then reinstall intel rapid storage. Will report back. thanks.

I guess I don't understand what you mean. This is the way the computer has been since I purchased it. I just decided to add the 2nd hard drive now.

What is interesting is that after I changed the bios to ahci and then back to raid, I am getting strange screens, but the computer eventually boots.

    It shows

    intel undi, pxe-2.1(build 083)
    realtek pci-gbe family controller
    client mac address xxxxx
dhcp (then it spins for awhile)
    No boot filename
    exiting pxe rom

Then it will eventually boot into windows.

What do you mean by a simple ghost?

What you are saying is that I need to set to ahci and then boot to windows disk and reinstall? Make sure everything is backed up first, of course. Is this how I would have to do this?

I am surprised as this is how my system came when purchased. Anyway, thanks for the help.

did you buy it from one of the vendors on the 1st page of this thread? if so you should contact them directly see if they know whats going on.

by what you're saying it sounds like the bios boot values are set wrong, going for network pxe boot 1st, frankly that's just a waste of time waiting for that. its only for initializing big quantities of laptops in a company like msi.

You can set it to boot directly from the hdd on port 0 it'll go faster.

and yeah i would use the recov dvds on the single drive after setting the bios to ahci. refer to a few pages back for a post of mine for more info .

Check which bios version you have.30H is newest.

This is what I would try first.

Open the bottom and take out the drives.

Remove the battery and power adapter

Disconnect the red/black wire connector to the motherboard by the fan for several minutes.

Put the r/b connector back on.

Put the Ac power plug back in and battery.

    Press power on button>Del

Reset times and change RAID to AHCI>save>shut down.

Put the SSD in the primary slot(label facing up)

    Start notebook>Del

    Set boot order>ODD>SSD>Realtek Lan.>Save> reboot>F11key

After pressing f11key a boot menue will appear

Choose the DVD or USB with Windows installation files

    Hi guys,

me again, jut to let you know that my memory problem and keyboard has been fixed, after 3 weeks MSI took care of it.

it was supposed to be 5 to 8 business days, but apparently they had trouble with some vendor parts not being delivered on time.

so now I have to update all of my stuff, haha.

they didn't wipe out y HD, do you recommend to do another clean install?

Nah, the hardware has only been touched, so yeah, not needed to install W7 unless you want to

Can you specify regarding your keyboard problem? I am having issues with the keyboard when I am typing really fast it appears that the keyboard misses keys. The shift also often doesn't register. I have ONLY had a problem with this MSI laptop, no other laptop ever (and I've owned about 10).

    Thanks!

Give MSI a call and request them to send you a keyboard, or just send it for repair; whatever fits you best.

The problem was while typing, I missed some letters and had to hit harder the key in order to type it. I do not know how to type properly, I always have to see the keyboard :D and use my index fingers.

I went ahead and did as you suggested and now have ahci set with a new win 7 install. The problem I am having is that I installed the new hard drive in the 2nd bay and it is still not showing in disk management. I verified that the drive works. Not sure what the problem may be?

Any ideas now? I do have an external drive connected and also the dvd works. Thanks

    Hi All,

I've been lurking around this thread a little bit and everyone here seems very knowledgeable and promptly helpful. I have a question with regards to installing an SSD. I've never performed this process and have been researching over the past few days on the specifics doing so. Currently, I have two 500GB 7200 RPM drives running in RAID 0 (the default setting for my laptop which is an MSI GT780DXR-095us). I see that typically, people install an SSD to use it for the laptop's OS/programs and keep an HDD for storage. However, a thought occurred to me - I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with installing TWO SSD's in their laptop and running them in RAID 0? Would there a huge speed/performance discrepancy between having one SSD+one HDD running separately and having two SSD's running in RAID 0? Theoretically, I would assume so, however if anyone has any opinions or experience on the matter I would like to hear them.

Some other things that have been on my mind: I am looking to acquire an SSD that runs on SATA III speeds (6 GB/s), however I am not completely sure if my specific laptop model supports SATA III and if its only meant for SATA II. Once again, my laptop is an MSI GT780DXR-095US. However, I did run a program called PC Wizard that informed me that my disk controller has a bandwidth of 6 GB/s. Does this confirm that this can support SATA III (6 GB/s)? What else should I look into to confirm this?

Lastly - is the speed/performance difference between an SSD+HDD and my current HDD+HDD in RAID 0 setup worth the money to be spent? I've seen some tests on Youtube between other laptops, however not any specific MSI GT780DXR model laptops.

Sorry for sounding like a complete n00b guys, some of my questions may seem incredibly basic but I am very new to this so I appreciate any real constructive advice. I am sure these questions are repeat-questions that have been raised in this forum as well, however I am also searching for relevant inquiries and thought it couldn't hurt to post my own.

    hi mztestvideos, welcome

to respond to your query about installing an SSD, look back over the last few pages you'll see some instructions by myself and whatsthepoint on what to do to install your SSD.

2nd yes definetly you'll see a big improvement using an SSD over even 2 raid drives.

3rd Sata 3 not 2. so go ahead upgrade.

    i recommend a Crucial M4 256gb just fyi.

You can run 2x SSD in RAID 0 but you will lose TRIM support on your SSDs (the data garbage collection for an SSD). Also, the performance gain is really minimal just as it is with 2x HDD in RAID 0.

Your laptop hard drive bays should both support SATA III (6Gbps) speeds just fine.

Yes, the speed/performance of stepping up from 2x HDD in RAID 0 to a single SSD is well worth the money spent. It doesn't have to be model specific, ANY current computer would gain significant performance with the step up to an SSD.

Quite okay with the newbie questions. Silly how Newb and Noob are confused but I did find this to be quite helpful Ctrl+Alt+Del - Glossary: Newb/Noob (2006-08-23)

Thanks smitty and Heihachi. I was actually looking into the Intel 520 series SSD's, however I see that many people on this forum are opposed to them because of its use of Sandforce controllers that have been troublesome and hassling in the past. However they have received high recent reviews on Google shopping from several users. I am aiming to get the best SSD in the 240-256 GB range and have the money to do so - any more suggestions? I have also heard that Intel SSD's are the most compatible with MSI GT780DXR laptops, which is why I am leaning towards an Intel SSD, but I am not quite sure what factors determine their compatibility.

This is another thing I'm curious about (forgive me, this question may reflect ultimate noobishness) - but when I do open up the back tray to reveal the two HDD bays - how do I know which one is my C drive and which one is my D drive? As far as I know, they aren't labeled differently on the outside to make that diffrentiation (unless I didn't look at them closely enough). I am tentatively going to take out my C drive (which holds my OS and programs) to replace it with the SSD, but which one of these is it?

Thanks again for the helpful responses.

i recommended the crucial but you can also go with the samsung 830

as for sandforce problems, always update the firmware right out of the box, they fixed it back in 2011.

i also have an ocz and its going fine in my desktop.

i'd like to add to that a tutorial how to secure erase your SSD using parted magic for those who might need it

How to securely erase an SSD drive | How To - CNET

and a video tutorial too (i didn't make it)
