LOL! You noticed that, eh? Naw, at the time I hadn't updated because some of the newer driver releases had issues. You are good with those drivers, and your post seems to verify that it's probably just a game issue. Your 'stock' Vantage numbers look right on the money, but I was curious of your 'TDE Only' (no AfterBurner) numbers. For grins, would you mind posting those too? Your 'OC' Vantage numbers look a little low, but apparently this was because you used lower clocks. Not real concerned with those numbers anyhow, because the clocks ('sweet-spot' -vs- point of instability) varies more from card to card.

    :)

im on a slow internet, I plan on going to a local wifi spot to DL the 3dMark programs tonight. I will do all three, I actually changed my O/C to numbers slightly under what you pictured and saints row went from 28-32fps to 38-42fps so I dont think its my card either lol. once I do the 3dmark im gonna fully remove GTA4 and do a fresh install....as Ive read its possible some files could of been damaged on the switch to a new PC, even if steam verifies it apparently. lol oh well, it wont hurt :p max temp was 73 with close to your settings in Unigine Heaven Benchmark, my points increased from 1229on old OC to 1442 on close to your OC, completly stable

I had to roll back my drivers, because it wasn't regulating the fan properly and I fear it may have fully damaged my gpu. I am currently using 296 instead.

Installed all again and ran all the tests. Results (nvidia driver 301.42):

    3DMark06 = 13900
    Vantage = 11200
    3DMark11 = 2800

What do you think? I feel like it's not the ideal yet :(

Screenshots of your results is helpful. ;)

Assuming the benchmarks were done with 'stock' clocks (no use of TDE or AfterBurner, etc.) on 'Performance' setting (P), your scores are actually right where they should be. See HERE for benchmark screenshots taken using the 268.90 drivers. Your 3DMark11 score is significantly higher..... probably due to the newer drivers.

    Hey guys,
have anyone of you solved the problem of the keyboard in this laptop?
The middle part of the keyboard is significantly higher than the rest and the panel under the space button peels off.
It's really annoying, that the notebook of such price lacks in quality.

    hi Bajena,

i have experienced the same issue you have when i first bought this laptop...
somewhat near the space bar button, the keyboard elevates...

thats a defect. i immediately returned it to the store and they immediately replace it with a brand new....

I've emailed suport in Taiwan about it.

I also asked for a 2.1 speaker option several times even though I almost always use headphones or earbuds.

Hey guys, I have a technical question that maybe someone somewhere may be able to help me out with. I figured this would be the best spot to ask.

So my MSI GT780 DXR has got a problem. The right hinge. (looking at the laptop) stopped moving with the screen. So when I try to open or close it the hinge doesn't move with it. Causing the plastic to bend and crack to the point where it looks and sounds like it's going to snap. Does anyone have any advice on how I might go about fixing this problem myself. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

Smitty123 posted a link a while back to a site with replacement covers.

It looks like front, back and the screen bezel. Perhaps they have what you need.

To get a good look at the hinge problem the bezel around the lcd needs to be removed and also the hinge cover.

While the bezel is off remove the black tape covering the 2 mic holes.

See this post on how to remove the bezel.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/8149277-post4852.html

Here's photo of the GT780DX hinge after the bezel, hinge cover and Touch Control Bar are removed.

There's also more disassembly info in post #1 including a disassembly video.

    Hi,

    I have a MSI GT780DX-277US w/ Core i7-2670QM & GeForce GTX 570M.

Only modification I did was to install an SSD harddrive as primary HD and used original HD as secondary. I do not use O/C.

Since I have it I sometime had problem with some game. Laptop freeze, screen become black and there is occasional "whitenoise". I have to shutdown by pressing power button for awhile. If I restart immediatly the power button will light, laptop make very brief noise (probably dvd player begining to spin) then shut down and cycle like this until it properly start.

In Dirt3 it almost never happened, same for L4D2. In Deus Ex 2 it did happen a bit more, but almost nothing with turbo fan. In Crysis 2 however it happen quite quickly, even with turbo fan running.

I did try FurMark and using 1080 burn in test computer freez after less than 3 minutes with turbofan running. It happen when GPU temperature reach around 80C. No problem running prime95 for about 15-20 min (temperature stabilize around 88-90C, about 4C less with turbo fan).

I guess I should send back to MSI, I purchased it on December 25th, 2011. Problem is that I am now working in a quite remote area and shipping cost will be very high (several hundreds at least).

There is something I could do or I really should send it back to MSI?

Which version of the drivers were you running before?

I would recommend trying either the 301.42 drivers or the 295.73 (if you aren't already running those).

Just be sure to use the Custom installation and check the box to "Perform a Clean Installation" when you install the drivers and you should be good to go.

    Hi,

I was planning on buying the MSI GT780DX-406US in a couple of days. I was also looking at the MSI GE70. I've set my budget to $1250 and really can't cross it. Now i'm confused. I really like the steelseries backlight keyboard on the 780 and the 7.1 ch sound, but GE70 has Ivy Bridge. From what i've read the GTX570M and GTX660M are comparable in performance. I would like to do a fair amount of gaming on the laptop, so heat and ventilation is also an issues. Do you think the GE70's well ventilated?. What would you guys recommend? Going with the older GT780 or the newer GE70?

    Go forward,not backward.Get the GE!

    GE70 | GTX660M | 16GB Ram | 256GB SATA III mSATA SSD | 750GB HDD

The 256GB mSATA can be purchased later.

2 x 8GB ram will be good for all the memory hogging apps.

The performance is likely the same ... Plus GTX 580M is the rebadge of GTX 675M

Unless you get GTX 680M otherwise is waste of money just buying the mSata since mSata is a bit slower and its pointless to upgrade something that do not have big advantage over the previous thing you bought.

If i am buying a new gaming notebook

    #1 > 3 hardrive Bays
    #2 > Dual GPU
    #3 > Better cooling
    #4 > Maybe 3D screen

Ivy bridge is just around 50% better in terms of CPU and newer 600 series PCIE 3 models such as kepler GTX 680M not GTX 675M

This show the CPU chart but it is not running neither GTX 675M or GTX 580M

Ivy Bridge Core i7-3720QM processor, 8GB of RAM and disabled the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M chip on the laptop integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000

As you can see GPU for GTX 675M is the same as GTX 580M

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-675M.70785.0.html

Unless is the true Kepler GTX 680M

As you can see the chart , the GTX 675M is exactly same score as GTX 580M

So end of the story , if you already have a GTX 570M or 580M notebook , just keep it and wait for GTX 680M notebooks otherwise if you are buying GTX 675M or 670M , you are just buying the same notebook you have before with just 2-5% faster performance and mSata ( come on intel 520 x 2 is way faster and more stability)

What shows up in the bios as the 4th SATA and listed as EMPTY is for an externally powered eSATA device that plugs into the eSATA port on the rear of the notebook.

    The eSATA port is unpowered.

i'm looking for the info on how to install windows from a usb key figured it could be in the 1st post but didn't find it. striker can you add it there for future ref? whatsthepoint contributed the tutorial.

i wonder if the msi set up can be done like that. i know a clean installation can be done from usb but i'm wondering if the msi dvds can be ported to usb.

And how much faster it would be. Actually i'm wanting to use my usb3 external hdd to do this or a 16gb usbkey.

    Can this be done?

Hi, I have bought the GT780DX-277US piece of joy not so long ago and now I'm just wondering about upgrading the RAM from 8 GB to 16GB. What's bugging me is just this - if I install a couple more of those RAM blocks, would they run in Quad- or Dual channel mode. I tried asking the tech support, but they were kinda "slow", advising me to go to the local service center for such an upgrade... Forgot to mention I no longer reside in The States.
    Thanks pretty much in advance!

There's 4 ram slots on the GT78x series;2 under the keyboard and 2 accessed through the bottom.

    The chipset supports duel channel.

To get true duel channel each of the channels needs the same amount and size memory modules.

If for instance the notebook has 3 x 4GB,two 4GB modules will run in duel channel mode and the other 4GB will run in flex mode.

If in one channel you have 8GB x 2,4GB x 2 or 4GB x1 plus 2GB x1 you should have the same in the other channel.

Your notebook supports a total of 32GB of DDR3-1333(Winows 7 Pro or Ultimate) or16GB DDR3-1333,16GB of DDR3-1600 or 12GB of DDR3-1866 with Home Premium.

Remember more ram is better even if it's not all running in duel channel mode.

So, let's say I install 8 more gigs of RAM. Would I get some more points on Heaven's Bench? I gave it a run right after getting the laptop out of the box and its score was just 668 points @1080p, tessellation normal.
Any idea, if that's score's normal and what score should I expect after the upgrade?

    Hi again!

I couldn't resist the crazy low prise of the RAM, so I ran to the store in my lunch break, bought and installed these so desired 8 more gigs!
Now it takes my laptop about 14s. to fully load Windows, which is about 4s. faster than the 8GB version of my laptop (please note, I've got Intel SSD 520 180GB installed as a main disk).

I got pretty much excited and tried Heaven's Bench again. 4 runs of it, and I couldn't get a single point over 600. Kinda dunno where that -68 points decrease came from. So I decided to do some softcore OC-ing. Installed MSI Afterburner 2.2.1 and set the clocks to 675/1350/1750. Ran the bench again and got the score of 784 points. I'm very happy with that, as I haven't done any cooling or V mods and there were no artifacts/max T=73C! ^^ Would be happy, if you guys share your GT780DX scores/clock speeds.

    @METALGOD3667
I got my refurbished GT780DX for $1050 in May.

Official WHQL REALTEK HD Audio driver v2.70

    Realtek

****Version 2.69 build 6.0.1.6649 took away sound from the subwoofer on my GT780DX****

EDIT:If you are still using Realtek HD Audio Driver 2.68 build 6.0.1.6602 and haven't updated to version 2.69 "DON'T" update.

With versions 2.69 and this new 2.70 sound from the subwoofer is gone.

Using a Uninstaller program and a registry cleaner and then installing the 1.68 6.0.1.6602 driver has NOT worked to get the subwoofer sound back.

are you installing it on windows 8 ?

anyone on windows 7 have this problem ?

i noticed on most websites i can't use the webcam until i authorize flash to access the cam, that's fine and on my other puter the flash autorization box works quite fast at detecting my webcam and giving control back to the browser.

But for some inexplicable reason, on this laptop the flash box isn't clickable at all, it just freezes there in the middle of the screen.

it freezes chrome when flash tries to get authorization to use the webcam.

There's a way around it to get it to work but you need to enter the name of the website prior to using it, that's not always possible and not really convenient.

Anyone know of a fix for this ?

That's funny. I used the realtek uninstaller, a driver cleaner, and reinstalled 6.0.1.6586 and I was able to get my sub back. Have you tried that version dude?

I had this problem on my win 7 setup. I was the one who initially brought it up on this forum.

I am still having trouble getting the sound right on my GT780 also. I got my first GT780-406 a few months ago, and the sound was fantastic. But, after weeks of chasing phantom BSODs, Ken @ Gentech actually worked to get my first laptop replaced. The new laptop is not blue screening, but the sound is not right. I only know this because I remember how amazing the first one sounded.

It seems as if the subwoofer is not working at all. I was on some 2.69 version of the Realtek HD driver, uninstalled it and went to safe mode and ran Driver Sweeper, and put on R2.68 (which shows at version 6.0.1.6602 , same as mentioned by WhatsThePoint a few posts prior), but it still sounds as if the subwoofer is doing nothing. No matter how I tweak the sound settings (stereo, 5.1 with only fronts/sub selected, THX settings, THX off, etc), it just does not sound all that impressive, and certainly not like the first laptop I had. Matter of fact, if this was the only time I heard these MSI's, I would wonder what all the bragging was about for the sound, since it's OK, but it's not overly impressive.

I guess I will keep messing around with settings, etc.

I know what you mean although I mostly use headphones.

Before I ever updated the Realtek HD Audio drivers past 6.0.1.6602 the sound seemed much better.

I'll see how it sounds again after I do a clean Windows 7 x64 installation and the driver from the GT780DX downloads.

MSI does have build 6602 download for newer models like the GT70.

I've sent several emails to realtek in Taiwan about drivers and requesting a 2.1 setting.

I just got 2 caddies delivered today from the local Clevo reseller. They were $8 bucks each.

MSI wanted me to carry the GT780DX into their notebook service center so the could scan the bar code and install the caddy. They wouldn't sell the caddy without the notebook.

I'll put 2 SATA III SSDs in raid0 in the internal bays and move a SATA II SSD to the caddy in the optical bay.

I've yet to use the DVD multi that was stock harware with the unit so out it comes.

ODDs are as obsolete as newspapers and wrist watches!

I'll bet we see notebooks shipping without ODDs included as stock hardware next year.
