Does it make any sense to put a 29x0XM CPU in my GT780DX, or better to put a 2860QM in it.
-
if i were you i'd upgrade the 1st hdd to a Sata III ssd 1st and see what it gives you as a boost in speed. -
I have a SATA II SSD wich is enough for now. The CPU is the question now.
-
if boot times are important to you, i boot in 8 seconds after a fresh install (no updates). it goes up to 12 after i install everything, all winupdates and my programs.
i misred yoru signature, the 1st hdd is an ssd already. best to put those in () no confusion lol -

The extreme processor will give you a substantial boost, especially when running complex calculations or data-crunching, but most folks really don't need such processing power...... and many would argue the cost doesn't justify the added performance benefit.
Question is, how xtreme do you want to be?
For gaming, most games are more GPU dependent, than CPU dependent, however a few games will task the processor more so. Overall it is felt the i7 26x0 series is adequate for the task. Personally, I opted to the 2860QM over the extreme processor...... saving $500 for slightly lessor performance, yet still gaining the additional 2MB L cache, and a substantial boost over the stock processor.
An example of CPU performance differences (26x0QM vs 2860QM) can be seen in my Memtest86 results HERE. When you upgraded to an SSD, you already have done the single greatest improvement you will immediately 'see', in real time. This is because you have significantly improved the speed by which data is read, written, or transferred. Question is, do you now want to further improve your system by boosting the speed by which the data is 'processed'? This improvement will not be so readily 'seen', but it is a significant system improvement nonetheless.
It's like tricking out your automobile. You can do this partially by boosting intake and exhaust, or you can take more a systems approach, considering the motor build, braking, suspension, drivetrain, and aerodynamics as well.
Again, it amounts to personal preference (really no right or wrong here) and budget. How xtreme do you want to be?
On a final note...... if gaming fps is your goal, consider looking to improved GPU's. With the new GPU's and the significantly improved 3rd Gen i7, I am not sure I would invest in a processor upgrade at this time..... unless you are planning to keep that GT780 for some time to come.
Best of luck in your decision.......

hello guys, please i need some help solving a problem with my GT780DX
I purchased this yesterday and today decided to unbox it and start it
unfortunately while starting the system for the first time, i got the windows blue screen with some error....
next i found myself asked to repair windows using the F3 button
again bad luck i get asked to insert a proper boot devise....
seems that i have a data error cycle redundancy check
keeping cool and as i was planning to place an ssd as a start up disk i switched the drives, installed windows 7 from a dvd i had, and istalled all the drivers on the drivers CD
the system is booting fast and everything is ok except that i have no idea of the MSI applictaions that are missing from the drivers CD.
i am unable to use te eject button, and all the upper menu buttons, unable to change colors , to turbo boost, etc
can someone please tell me what are the software i am missing as i have never managed to start it with it's factory original settings.
thanks
i am currently looking at this page, are these the utilities for tweaking everything:
http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT780.html#/?div=Utility&os=Win7 32
if yes, what are the ones that does not seem important to install? -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
-
Thanks -=$tR|k3r=- downloading and updating these
one more question please, as i was in hurry i replaced the drive with an ssd, do you think that MSI/the seller will replace me the hd as it is still under warranty (one day old!) or i did a wrong move opening the back cover and voiding the warranty?
thanks again for your links -
MSI or reseller should be able to cover what they installed in the system if that is found to be the cause of any issues.
If it was your own components that caused failure though, you have to handle that on your own. -
Hello and good day,
May i just ask anyone if its possible for my MSI gt780 base model
i5-2410m
to be upgraded to an ivybridge?
so far there are no BIOS updates in the MSI website.
I'm planning to buy a cheap NEO laptop here in the philippines with the i7-3610QM and i would just swap both processors.
any help would be great

Hi guys I was wondering if you could help me out with something. My GT780 DX has been blue screening A LOT lately and I feel like it has started to overheat very badly when running any sort of application or game, regardless of video settings. I ordered from GenTech and had them install an SSD (120 GB OCZ Vertex) card into the primary drive and kept the standard 500 GB drive as the secondary. I have run the startup tests and even the system restore using the factory restore disk.
Here is something that will help I think. when I turn on the computer I get a black screen that flashes right after the windows logo comes on: It flashes very quickly but says something about the 'DATA' is not set correctly and that the memory needs to be checked for consistency. The blue screens I get also mention things about memory but each blue screen seems to be different.
If I had to guess what happened, I think a game (star wars the old republic) somehow corrupted either my RAM or other memory and now the hardware is wrecked. It never used to overheat EVER (even max settings on any game) and now the second I open anything the fans kick in and start blasting heat out of the back.
Anyway sorry for the long post I was just trying to be descriptive, as I am not good with computers at all... Can anyone suggest additional things I can do? I was really hoping not to have problems with such a nice machine so soon...
EDIT: I did yet another disc check (on the secondary d drive this time) and am not getting the black screen on startup. The machine is still running extremely hot though and this is what I'm most worried about. -
so is this thread dead or what?

Recently, I had a problem with my GT780DXR suffering from throttling while playing halfway in a Dota 2 game.
The clock would throttle to
Core = 73.5MHz
Shader = 147MHz
Mem = 324MHz
I was very frustrated as this happened several time and I decided to seek help from Ken. He told me to clean the vent and the problem was solved immediately.
Check out the images, I only used my rig for about 6 months and it got this dirty.

Need help!
So I was playing MW3 and suddenly the laptop froze up(first time ever!)!! I wasn't able to ctrl+alt+del the situation, windows button wasn't responding, and mouse cursor was nowhere to be found!
Then I unplugged the power and restart the laptop, black screen says:
"windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device yada yada yada. Status: 0xc00000e9 , Info: an unexpected i/o error has occurred."
I then tried to reinstall the laptop but it says "no drives were found"!
The laptop is MSI GT780DX,I bought it last May and haven't done any upgrading, sorry for the long post...PLEASE HELP... -

Seems like you have hard drive failure. -
That didn't work,step 1.I can't even get into windows/desktop (it stuck at MSI logo),step 2.it says there's no hdd/drives.
What really confuses me is when I try to reinstall/reformat it says "no drives were found" but I checked my bios and there it was WDC 750GB,does this mean anything?Do I really have hdd failure? Is there anything I can do to fix it w/out taking it to the shop? -

Contact the place you bought the notebook from and see if you can send them the bad drive instead of the whole notebook going to MSI for service.
Once you have a new drive placed into the bottom of the notebook see this thread for installing Windows 7 x64 on it.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi...t780-gt783-owners-lounge-498.html#post8177509
BTW,you can try a secure erase of the bad drive using Parted Magic and then initiaize and format the disk before trying to do a clean Windows install on it but if the drive failed nothing can bring it back. -
I've had my GT780 for almost a year, and recently noticed an issue in my BIOS, see thread, here.
Justin over at Xotic, already stated that I should flash my BIOS, and after looking on MSI's webpage for the laptop, I'm just wondering if it is really this easy, or if I'm missing something?
Namely, all I do is these few steps on this PDF? I've flashed BIOS only once or twice before on previous systems, and it was always very complex.
So, to be very clear:
1. Download non-raid BIOS from GT780 webpage, here.
2. Unzip and verify the 2 files present. Unzip to anywhere? Desktop only?
3. Double click flash.bat
4. Restart after BIOS update is complete.
Is this it? Has anyone ever had any problems following this procedure?
Would really appreciate some replies before I do this.
Thanks much. -

I always flash bios from Dos on a usb key, not because i don't trust flashing bios in windows, but the less you have between your flash prog and the hardware the better.
it's really not that complicated:Basically extract the zip file to the usbkey and boot from it.
here's the short of it:
1) format a usbkey for booting in dos follow the directions here How to format a USB memory key you only need io.sys msdos.sys and command.com no other files than these and your bios files.
2) Once you've done these instructions, download the bios from the msi site and follow instructions in the pdf you found.
3) run flash.bat from command line, not flashme.bat
wait for it to tell you its done.
3) Reboot manually ctrl+alt+del or power off will do fine. then power on, go in bios, reload all setup defaults, make sure your settings for raid or ahci are correct for your configuration.
You should be good to go after that. -

I've had no problem at all flashing my bios or for others using this tool.None at all.
The MSI forum boasts a 100% success rate!
It's very simple to use.
It guides you through it.
Upack the tool to your desktop.
Leave the bios zipped.
The tool will be put onto your USB stick and then the bios.
When you reboot press the F11key and choose the USB stick.
After you flash go into the bios and redo your settings.
AHCI if not using raid array.
Adjust your time if need be and reset your boot order placing the Realtek Lan LAST! -
if you get it working make a backup 1st even before letting us know lol or you risk loosing all your stuff. Hope you have a good backup
Let us know if you get it fixed, i'd just swap out the drive for a new one. -

Blowing air into the vents from outside the notebook blows the dirt into the notebook.
I recommend opening the bottom of the notebook and blow the dirt/dust out of the copper cooling fins of the gpu heatsink and cpu heatsink with a can of compressed air.
Remove the 1 screw holding the fan in place and lift the fan clear of the fins.
Then take a small modeling paint brush or makeup brush and clean the blades on the fan. Then blow out the fan.
Opening the bottom doesn't void the warranty unless you damage somehing while inside.
Cleaning with a brush and compressed air shouldn't cause any damage that would void the warranty. -

For reference, the HDD is a Samsung Spinpoint M8 500GB, 5400RPM (I don't think these things were meant to be put in gaming notebooks.) [also, it's 500GB because I got the i5 variant from a reseller here in the Philippines.]
RMA is right out of the options list now, since we can't seem to find the invoice anywhere. Any ideas?
I've been considering getting an SSD but man those things are expensive as heck, at least in my country. Might gather enough money for a 120GB one though.
Should I try and open my case and void the warranty (since I don't have the receipt, I can't benefit from it now anyway), and replace the hard drive with a spare one I have lying around, to see if it boots? Did I just end up with a faulty unit that suprisingly lasted for nine months?
EDIT: I should let you folks know that opening the laptop's underside voids the warranty here in the Philippines (I don't think that applies to you folks in US and EU though) -

Contact the place where you bought the unit for a duplicate invoice.

They scan the bar code on the notebooks that shows it's complete history from the day it shipped.
Even to buy a simple part like a hard drive bracket or spare power adapter the notebook must be produced so the bar code can be scanned.
Also they are reluctant to service any customized notebook.
Before I bring a unit in for warranty service I need to remove all the parts I added and put back in the stock parts.
They've never said anything about missing or broken stickers. -

Instead of putting a Bigfoot Networks folder in Program Files it will put a folder named Qualcom Atheros and yield a new Qualcom Atheros shortcut icon.
