any suggestions for an external case usb 2.0 or 3.0 to put the dvd/blueray drive from this laptop in ?

i want to remove that and put a 3rd hdd, its more practical.

the dvd/BR might still be usefull in 2012 but its not something i use much anymore so i'm thinking i'll just put it in an external case, usb powered if possible, i'd rather not have an adapter but if i must then i will.

any problems/compatibility/other that could arise or encounter if i do this kind of setup with a 3rd hdd in that slot ?

Why does this thread show 700+ pages sometimes and sometimes less then 200 pages? lol

Just wanted to say, I was having some issues with my Subwoofer not working on my GT783. I noticed only a couple of posts regarding this saying they fixed but with really no detail aside from some programs. I just wanted to point out that all I did to fix the issue was rollback back my sound driver, rebooted and then installed the RealTek HD driver from the disk provided with the laptop and all is well. I also had to manually install THX software on account it was not preloaded and I didn't realize I was missing anything until this evening. Program is superb the quality of my headphones is REALLY being used now.

On a side note, I recently ran into an issue where on a manual reboot my GT783 decided not to boot. No warning noises, no odd issues, running perfect prior to the reboot. Would not post, power light would come on and you would hear the fan and HD's get power but no activity and no bios load up. Mind you I've been repairing and building computers for 10+yrs as a side thing, contacted Customer service, etc, etc. All told me to RMA but it just didn't make sense to me, so I had finally given up hope and was going to RMA it so I put the stock Samsung ram back in and just on a whim pushed the power button and glory behold it booted. I've personally never run across a computer not give warning beeps or not post like this over a bad ram, always got some kind of warning or whatnot. So just thought I'd share my experience in case anyone else runs into a similar issue.

I love my GT783, Skyrim in ULTRA with High Res Textures is SICK SICK SICK hehe

This is my first post on this forum, so hello everybody :)

I wondered if anyone here tried modifying vBIOS with Svet vBIOS Tuner and changing voltage and other parametres for P8 stage (to get a better performance on battery).
I don't have this tool, but I asked a user of another laptop forum and he created such a modified vbios for me. I installed it but unfortunately the performance on battery is still poor. I checked with nVidia Inspector and it shows the clocks, shaders and memory parametres for P8 which match what I wanted, but the voltage is still 0,8V, and it blocks the core clocks from getting a good performance I guess.
Now I don't know, if that guy forgot to change the voltage in P8, or am I doing anything wrong? I don't think reinstalling the drivers would help anything, but I could give a try.
Would appreciate any help. Maybe someone could also check that modded vbios I got, or repair it in Svet vBIOS Tuner.

    Cheers

P.s. Sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker. However I managed to write this post without any translator programs ;).

Hey guys, I'm finally back from the dead, and so is my GT780!
Got me one of those Kingston SSDNow V+200 SSD's to replace my busted primary, and it feels so good to startup and shutdown.
Not sure about Photoshop performance though, I'll check on that later.

    Hello Guys,

So a really wonderful friend of mine deiced that he was going to surprise me with a laptop since my M1710 died after all these years.

SO...I'm joining the group! :D and I have read well over 90% of the thread too

Here is what he ordered :

    1 x MSI GT780DX-406US
Display 17.3" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Glossy Screen w/ 72% NTSC Color Ga29mut
    Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM, 2.2-3.1GHz,
Thermal Compound Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound
    Graphics Video Card nVidia GeForce GTX 570M 1,536MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11
    Ram 16GB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory
    Primary Hard Drive 750GB 7200RPM
Optical Drive Bay 6X Blu-Ray Reader + 8X DVDRW/CDRW Super Multi Combo Drive
Wireless Network Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1103 (3x3) (Includes 3rd Antenna) (Dual Band)
Clean Installation Option Clean Windows Installation

It was ordered from XOTIC PC on July 29th. ON Aug 6th they sent an email saying that the Cash payment (Via bill pay with Bank of America) had been received and it takes 1 to 2 weeks to clear. Today they sent another email saying pretty much the same thing. He has sent the cleared item page to them showing that it cleared, but we have heard nothing back on it as of yet X_x... Not real happy or sure whats up with these guys.. I get that they need to make sure items clear but with Check 21 laws and the way that BANK bill pays work this is a bit much.. Anyone else had issues with them on this?

Any ways ... a short time after the order was placed they pulled this unit off their site and no longer offer it.
Could any of you give me information on what the MAX upgrade stats are on this system? Its really not what I would have ordered for my self but being a gift I don't dare turn it down or return it. I would like to upgrade it :) I do game, I cant wait to get Diablo III on there as well as SKYRIM and I use CS5/6 Master collection for work. Mostly Photoshop more then anything. Looking to get the very most out of this system and would like to know what I can do to push its limits for my uses..

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I need help badly!!!, this laptop is REALLY, awful, i have the GT780-i5, here in the philippines.... I called my local msi support here and they are charging me 100usd worth backlight keyboard replacement, without any warranty!!!, now i asked them if there's ana alternative to this, a cheaper replacement without any backlight... thery said they do not know.... then I asked other forum members here in my country... they suggested it might be possible to place the keyboard of the msi gx660/gt660 to this gt780.... is there any truth to this???? PLEASE rEPLY ASAP!!

I already wasted a lot of money on this piece of trash when I bought it, and money here is eally tight!!!

the keyboard issue i'm getting is that Letters are sometimes skipped, and the "r" key is particularly bad in this regard. Even worse is the fact the "r" will sometimes randomly start repeating endlessly ... sometimes a couple seconds after typing an "r" and sometimes for no reason at all

I really need to know if gx660/gt660 keyboard is compatible with this???
anyone from MSI Tech support or more experienced please answers
fyi: cant retun it anymore because its been with me for the past year and two months

i'm typing this on my msi craptop GT780!!, and copy/pasting the letter "r"

thanks in advance fo any intelligent answer
    and have a nice day

i understand your frustration, it seems steelseries has made a bunch of crap keyboards in this laptop. you can contact them directly or msi not philipines but global, to get a replacement. there are videos in the 1st message of this thread to show how to replace keyboard in the 780 laptop. it should apply to any model from msi.

if you don't get a reply, you can always buy a cheap 10$ wired usb keyboard and plug it in.

also, have you tried flashing the keyboard firmware from msi ?

have you checked if its a virus ?

thanks for that, i've already scanned my system, haven't flashed yet the firmware... can you please leave me a link to where i can find it??

while i'm typing my response to you it seems that the keyboard is working fine again... but i still think its busted

    @ supeg & nicksilver,

You may want to edit your post, reducing the resolution of your uploaded screenshot images. They are so large, it forces readers to use the side-to-side slider bar to read the pages.... which many find annoying.

    :)

For the answer to this and other information, you may want to bookmark THIS POST for future reference.

Well Forget my other post.. Seems Xotic did not bother to pull my unit when we placed the order and are now sold out.. Also.. They say that the payment cleared on the 7th.. but as you can see from my other post they sent us an email just a day or two ago saying they were still waiting for it too clear.. When asked about this they said no one monitors their cash accounts as not many people have access to the account.. When asked about the people in accounting who's job this is.. NO answer was given and the subject was changed..

I have been let down by Xotic and they are losing this sale ....Now shopping for a new system....

that's unusual of a store to offer such poor service, did you atleast recup your money?

Who did you talk to at Xotic?

on 1st page, did you contact Justin Nolte? might be better able to help with your problem from them.

I am unsure as to whom he spoke with there.. As far as I know he is getting a Refund and no longer wishes to deal with them. He told me that it was the most unprofessional experience that he had ever had from a " So called " Established business..

We are going with IBuyPower They have a great BB rating and we are going to order a maxed out Valkyrie CZ-17 BTS now.. AKA GT70 I believe, its a better system anyways...

I had always heard good things about Xotic its really too bad.. I know I wont be sending anyone there now..

Well my purchase of GT783-625us was superb from XoticPC I was helped by Hutsady and everything went smoothly.
I do have to say and this is REALLY disappointing that the service has been less then acceptable. You will see my issue on my post #7652 on this page at which time I was still pending a response from someone at Xotic.
I called and spoke to someone in the troubleshooting dept. who immediately directed me to call MSI because I didn't purchase their troubleshooting. Then when I told MSI that I purchased a customized unit and was directed to
them MSI told me I have to deal with XoticPC first to make sure none of the changed equipment was faulty. So then I spoke with someone in Xotics cutomer service, whom I do not recall their name and was told to
Email because they have to go through their contact at MSI and I would receive a response in a day or so, mind you this was on Aug 9th and I needed my computer for work
and I requested to be contacted by someone and after 2days went by I ended up fixing the issue myself because I was losing money not being able to work.
So after all this instead of someone helping me I was ignored for a week, and set back on work.
I only today received an Email back, never a call or anything at 6:41pm EST. Telling me they submitted an RMA request and should have more info for me in 24hrs or so.
Not very helpful at all and I purchased from them because of all the great reviews I read of their service. Very disheartening, makes me worry about what will happen when I REALLY need help.

giving you the old run around trick huh?

Well frankly right now Xotic pc isn't looking too good , i guess i'll let Justin Nolte defend his store's policy, its his store.

yunno i always thought helping with a customer's purchase was part of good service. somebody oughta tell them that.

well maybe there's a reason they come in 3rd on the 1st page here. if i ever decide to buy msi again i'll make sure to contact Ken from GenTech PC, always heard good things from other members who bought from GenTech PC

The second person I talked to at XoticPC explained that they have a contact to MSI and that the person in the Troubleshooting dept. should not of directed me to contact MSI and he gave his apologies for that.
Very nice and everything he said made sense and it satisfied me enough to send the email, like I said I don't recall his name because at that point I was a little irritated and frustrated. He gave me the answers I needed and
wanted at the time and seemed legit, so I was patient. I swapped the ram and figured out my problem after the second day on sheer dumb luck because as I said, the computer wasn't giving the normal "Hey your RAM crapped out." signs.
I only put my story up because I read what AbsintheKat posted, hopefully the issue is looked into. Because that's a lost sale and a disappointed customer. I mean it would of been nice if someone said "Hey we got you're email, things are bit hectic here right now and we are sorry for the wait."
Or if someone called back and said "Hey, just for giggles try this out before we bother going into an RMA." Oh well, I'm happy with my computer either way. Hopefully I won't need service any time soon and if I do, maybe it will be better.
On the other hand since I doubt many people have run across my particular issue, maybe I'll be flagged on a cork board at the office as a "Don't help this customer, he's a jackass who shared his less than pleasant experience." lol

P.S. at the time of my purchase they had great deals going on that the other companies did not. This was my first time purchasing a brand new laptop and they had the best bang for the buck, I had $2900 limit including shipping and I got the Processor, and netcard updates I wanted. At the time the same system at Gentech was $200 more. So the price along with the reviews I read helped my decision, I was watching all 4 of the sites listed on the front page for a month before I finally ordered. I DO NOT regret my decision to purchase from XoticPC. I personally feel that maybe someone dropped the ball and that maybe it was an honest mistake, but to receive an email a week later from the customer service manager no less just to say they submitted the request for my RMA TODAY and should receive a response in 24hrs or so is a bit ridiculous.

good to hear things worked out. but this brings to mind if the service is like that from someone at Xotic, then that guy is lazy and failing his customers. Someone at Xotic needs to make sure this rep or tech guy gives customers the best support possible.

another one falling through the cracks...

I am sorry to hear of this. Unfortunately we do not hold any item until we have confirmation of payment. We do not hide or conceal this in any fashion and provide this to the customer at the time of order when check/money orders are utilized. We ask any customer that pays via these methods to provide a copy of their cleared check so we can move a order into production. Until we get this or the clearing time has passed we are unable to allocate a item or move it into production.

This is put into writing at the time of order to the customer so we can quickly move orders into allocation and production phases. When a check is deposited it can come back at anytime within up to 10 business days. We have our clearing time at 5-10 UNLESS a copy of the cleared check is provided. Having someone monitor a checking unfortunately does not accomplish this. We have the clearing time set where it is now due to payments coming back NSF or Fraud close to 8 business days after deposit. With your payment being received the 6th we unfortunately can't allocate or move it to production until the above has been completed. I am sorry this has always been our policy and we are nothing but 100% up front about that immediately at the time of order in a email to the customer.

I am extremely sorry to hear this. This is not how we do business and our Service Reps are trained and required to be prompt in their replies. I dont know if a email filter is to blame or what the details are here but I would like to research this further for you. If you can please PM me your email address I would like to look into this further.

Try to reinstall drivers and make sure that Stereoscopic drivers are installed. Maybe you did not install them last time you upgraded your drivers.

regarding the poping sound the keyboard makes while typing, i heard something similar and i wasn't even typing.

ok so i was watching this new nvidia demo, fairies, frankly i'm not impressed by nvidia's choice for demoing their flagship cards and code, fairies, what's next kittens? lol

Anyway so i was watching this video, and because i have my headset plugged in but not in my ears yet, i heard some pops coming from the keyboard. meanwhile my headset is plugged in firmly.

so i'm thinking the subwoofer is producing these pops, either drivers could have a bug or it could be hardware.

one more thing to add to my list when i ship this laptop to msi for fixing other things.

I actually got 3D working on my old GT780R W/560M, so yours should work.

What I did is, connected an HDMI 1.4 cable, ran Crysis 2, chose stereoscopic 3D and the image mode to split horizontally. Then on the TV, I turned 3D mode on and chose the Horizontal split, and works!

Just make sure your cable is 1.4 else it won't detect a 3D signal.

    what: lag spikes?

you mean the game lags during gameplay at random times?

that's part of the game, try turning down your Fx settings, like shaders or AA

I added my hard drive to OCZ 3 120gb
Now after changing it i realized i removed the warranty sticker.
I read in one comment that it will not void our warranty

    Can anyone confirm this from
    Canada or US?

I hope it will not because its just replacing a simple hard drive

    Gt780dxr
    i7 2630qm
    Nvidia 570m 1.5gb ddr5
    12gb ram
    2x 500gb @ 7200rpm
    1 ocz 3 120gb ssd

So what i did was i removed the optical drive and install my ssd there

Again can anyone confirm it the warranty is void completely by doinh such

My GT683dx came with a warranty sticker that I removed when installing hdd/ram and just recently I sent my laptop in service for some repairs and there was no mention about the missing warranty sticker.

When I phoned them previously to ask some details about the sending in the laptop for service, they specifically mentioned that I should not temper with the warranty sticker, but that it will the service's decision whether this will void or not my warranty.

It seems there were no problems at all, considering there were visible marks on the screws as well.

msi is pretty cool about the warranty sticker, they know gamers want to upgrade ram, hdd or wifi.

Aslong you don't change the motherboard itself, the vidcard or cpu it shouldn't void anything.

    yep dynaudio is the best.

tho i've read reports not to install the latest Realtek drivers R269 or R270

version R268 are the ones recommended right now.

i'd recommend the newer models, GT60/70 they have faster cpu and vifcards.

the GT780dxr is also latest of the 780s but the GT70s are newer.

Do have a look at the 1st post in this thread to get good vendors. Everyone recommends buying from Ken at Gentech. 100% satisfied customers.

you can customise it with addons like SSD boot drive, or at the price they are right now, 2x120 or 2x240gb sandisk extreme or anything with sandforce sf-2281 contolers would work so fast, see posts by what'sthepoint in this thread for more advice, he knows everything about msi.

oh and do get a better wifi card than the centrino-130 eventhough its 802.11n, its only 1x1 means no MIMO and only 72mb/s. Bigfoot killer n 802.11n is recommended.

the 72% gamut gloss screen is better than matt screen. i have the mate screen and its not as hot as i thought after seeing the gloss screen.

    hth,
    Smitty

Anyway i am still looking for the latest drivers for the hardware, the ones on msi website, is already old and the utilities is old also...

just downloaded the utilities from thee latest gt model, so far its working fine

another question, has anyone tied installing windows 8 preview on this laptop, how was it?? is it 100% compatible?

I know some of you guys might be going through the same issues I'm having. I have a GT780r_012us. I've been finding that when I play games recently that my GPU usage spikes down often causing a horrible stutter while playing game. Has anyone found a solution to this. IS there A Bios update I have to do. I keep my computer optimal. I take care of it and manage it extremely well. I'm just extremely bugged by this >.>

    Hi all,

On my GT780DXR does the P1 button switch the processor turbo/overclock mode over 3 Ghz or does it overclock the 570M ? Intel Speedstep and Nividia Overclock Tool are enabled.

The manual says When AC power is connected, touch the P1 touch sensor to raise the over-clocking setting to achieve a higher performance. Touch the sensor again to return to the normal status.. I thought that P1 was thus putting the 2670QM in turbo mode but I see today that exiting Nvidia Overclok Tool disables P1 too.

Thanks for shedding some light on my confusion.

    Dominique

Yes, the 'P1' button is to activate MSI's TDE (Turbo Drive Engine), which provides a mild OC to the GPU. Also, the NV OC Tool is an integral part of TDE, and without it, 'P1' and TDE do not function.

Anytime you are gaming, benchmarking, using TDE, or anything causing the GPU to draw needed power, make sure you have the AC power adapter plugged in. Without it you will see a severe drop in performance and frame rates. As a rule, notebooks with high-end GPU's should not be ran on 'battery-alone', unless doing light duty task.

    :)

Thank you, extremely clear, appreciated ! I am most of the time on AC and when I tried a couple of times to use P1 on battery, I indeed saw a sheer drop of performance :).

About the "mild" OC I thought that the TDE was also pushing the CPU from 2.2 to 3+ Ghz. How to do it then ?
