hmm, do you also get temps in the 50s and 60s?

if that's the case it would'nt be related to heat, your temps seem normal to me, 65 and 55c is not going to break anything, i think the cut off for heat is over 80c

    hmm...

like i said your temps seem normal, especially if in game.

Do you also have an intel 520 ssd?

Did either of you check to see if that drive has compatibility issues ?

my GT780DXR has an eSata port in the back.

    There's no BIOS that allows CPU o/cing with the GT780 - there's with the GT60/70 :p

As per what Paul has said I tried to unlock the Bios some months back and had no luck with CPU, but the GT60 and GT70 are able.

Been a while since I have been on the boards so need to catch up with thing's, I had an MSI GT780dx 215US with RAID and a 6990m in place sold it, got a M18x got bored with it and my eldest daughter seems to have stolen the laptop so I am back again and thinking MSI :)

If answer is : impossible, i'l just stay on my 2840qm i ordered today.

    Welcome back :)

No way to o/c XM CPU in 780/783 :) though you can bump your bclk to 104-105 which will give an extra 120-130mhz boost @ 4 cores.

I've actually been noticing the same thing in Borderlands 2. I installed some temp monitoring software and saw my core temps hitting 95-98 degrees occasionally which I'm guessing is close to the throttling temperature (I think 100?). I'm guessing it's overheating? This is also with a Laptop cooler (which does lower idle temps by several degrees) and the laptop's fan mode on. When it idles it's like in the 40s.

Well i don't have any ssd yet, but i found out that overheating and restarting was caused by my ac adapter, on battery i can play almost everything but while on adapter i got those restarts and so. I am quite surprised that adapter could cause this problems, going to claim it...

Can someone explain proper usage of Turbo Fan. If I am gaming is it a given that Turbo Fan should be on or you overheat?

Every game with Turbo Fan on or off runs 80C CPU and 60-70C GPU except for Guild Wars 2. It pushes the CPU to 91C with Turbo Fan on. That seems a bit high.

I think you can go to the MSI forums. They have a donation section for getting an unlocked Bios for your laptop but no support.

Without using the Turbo Fan function, your current fan profile will automatically speed the fan, if needed..... temps rise, fan speed increases. Turbo Fan merely allows users to boost fan speed, should they see fit..... like during torturous OC or Furmark runs.

91C is not TOO high for CPU or GPU, but I suggest all owners establish normal baseline temps for their units..... a good idea with any performance notebook. If you notice temps increasing over time, it may be time to consider a good air-can cleaning..... and possibly a thermal re-pasting.

    :)

    Thanks for the info.

Idle temps are really good and so are temps playing other games. Guild Wars 2 is CPU bound so it pushes the CPU really hard. I know the TJ Max on my CPU is 100C but I was a little worried getting that close. It fluctuates but doesn't sit at it for long 86C-91C. This was also a very taxing scene in the game that doesn't happen all that often with 40-60 players in the same area fighting a boss. Otherwise it's around 70-80C in game. I'll keep an eye out on idle temps and other games. If those start to rise higher than normal i'll hit up MSI.

i run guild wars 2 with only 65c-75c but most likely is around 68c

If only in the future , we can upgrade GTX 580M to something like a 7970m or something better

I had my 780R for over a year and had no problems gaming on it. Recently I was playing D3, minimized the game to browse the web real quick and it just shutdown on it's own.

Now it won't boot at all. When I turn it on The power button goes on, the touch panel is unresponsive, fan runs at full speed but it does not load the MSI screen. Basically all that is happening are the fans are turning on and the HD's spin but nothing else happens.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? should I get a heat gun and try a reflow or should I send it in for repairs?

I'm hoping it's nothing too expensive.

    Thanks.

Does anyone know whats the best GPU that can be put in a GT780r. I know people are using the gtx 580m but is there better cards that can be installed like a 675m or even a 7970m. Anyone out there pull this off?

    Thank you for you answer.
Without unlocked bios, i was able to up my bclk from 100 to 105.5, wich gave me + 154mhz, and now waiting for my 2840qm to upgrade, and upgraded with a 7970m.

Another question ( already googled and didn't find a proper answer ) :
Is there a way to control fan speed and to make our own speed/temp specifications ?

Anw, thk you for your time.

MSI Afterburner has a nice temperature / fan speed control. You can put little dots on a grid and based on temperature the fan speed will increase. It does a good job on its own though.

some said their 580m won't clock like a 580 but a 570, need either an unlocked bios or some other patch.

perso i'd just sell the laptop if its not to your liking. why buy a 780 when a GT783/G70 has what you need.

    Quote myself.

The fan speed is controlled by EC controller. No modded bios or vbios can give access to this with msi afterburner or any other speed fan control software.

So if anyone has informations about how we can access this :hi2:

[edit]Ok, found. My ears love this :) Thx to svet !

Alright, so because of the overheating problem from Borderlands 2, I've decided to go ahead and repaste. However, I'm not really all that experienced with this in general. From what I've read, with the Arctic MX-4, I'm supposed to do a full spread on this CPU (from their site instructions). And from the disassembly video in the OP, it looks like all I have to do is unscrew, unplug, and remove the fan, then just remove the heatsink? It seems like the heatsink itself isn't bolted down or anything. After that can I just clean the CPU straight up, or do I need to remove the CPU as well first?

This will give you an idea.

As for the repaste, I use mx-4 also. I used a pea size for the cpu and a rice grain size for the gpu.

Yeah, that's the video I was looking at. But should I be removing the CPU to clean up the old thermal paste, or can I just keep it on the board for cleaning?

When you talk about the pea/grain size, that's just the initial amount right? But you're still supposed to spread it I think (at least according to Arctic's instructions for notebook CPUs). I think it's because they don't come with a heat spreader?

Pea and rice grain size are the full amount. You will need no more than that. Any more than those amounts it will be worse and very messy. The heatsink pressure when it is screwed in will spread the mx-4 evenly.

Another example (note how spreading it creates air bubbles which is not what you want)

I also have a question for the rest of the people. Can anyone find a place to purchase a new mainboard for the GT783 that does not require a core to be returned to MSI?

I emailed RK computers and they would special order one in but they needed a GT783 core to be returned which I do not have (GT780)

Yes, I'm aware of the middle dot method, and if I was still using a single-core CPU on a desktop, that's what I would do too. :) But Arctic Silver *specifically* says for 2nd gen i7 Mobile CPUs that you're supposed to use the surface spread method.

Arctic Silver, Inc. - Intel® Application Methods

The only CPUs they recommend the dot method is for single-core CPUs (basically the Pentiums). For all multi-core desktop CPUs, they recommend a line. And for mobile CPUs, it's always a surface spread. I believe the reason is the lack of a IHS on mobile CPUs and without the spread, you're basically creating "pockets of air" on all the corners where the thermal paste didn't reach.

    Hey everyone.

I am either going to purchase the GT780DX or the GE70 but I need to know if the GT780DX has an mSata slot so I can add an SSD.

I need at least 12GB of RAM and an SSD and since the GT780DX already has 12GB of RAM I want to know if I can add an SSD as my main drive.

If I buy the GE70, U would have to buy an 8GB stick but I know for sure that it has an mSata port so I could install a 120GB Mushkin SSD into it.

Please help because I want to pull the trigger!

Ok, I got an oddball sort of issue.....everytime I move files from my computer to any of my external HD's I get ridiculous lag issues. It happens on all USB ports and on ALL of externals. It seems to act up mostly when I move more then 1GB of data. I can't figure this one out at all, 12gb's of stock ram, SSD, only thing im unsure about is my paging file recommends 18,000 which seems a bit much to me? Possibly related? Any info would be most appreciated. Computer is flawless aside from this issue.

P.S- I'm 99% sure its not the drives, as this issue does not happen on other PC's I connect them to....also its 3 different drives, which the odds all 3 are bad/going bad at the same time are kinda slim ya know?

reinstall usb drivers. check msi website, 1st paragraph on this thread.

And for swap, you have 12gigs, if you don't ever use that much, why swap 1.5x ?

i just set it to use between 1gb and 4, and set puter to manage it so its a physical 1gb file and uses barely more than that.

in fact if you don't fill your ram, you could even shrink it to 200mb (win7 minimal ) or disable it all together.

i have 16gigs, i use a ramdrive (4gb) for my temps/net temps and swap. Easy clean up they get erased on each reboot.

And its fastest and as stable as a swap on an hdd/SSD.

you may ask why make a swap in ram? 16gb, i use it to game and work, at most i use 6-8gb in games and much less for work, so why not.

take that anyone who says computers don't need more than 8 gigs :p :D

I have a gt780DX with 16gb of RAM. Ive had it for about a year. Ive been using the MSI Live Update 5 app to update drivers on this laptop. A while ago I scanned my pc with this app and I saw a msi utility named MSI-SUITE. after I installed it my laptop began to preform slowly. I couldn't even get the app to launch and it made my laptop freeze. It also caused startup problems.

After managing to uninstall the program it seemed to go back to normal, but Ive recently noticed in the task manager that my ram usage seems to stay around 2gb on idle. It says a svchost.exe process is using the most ram.

Is 2gb ram usage normal or can it be the effects of that MSI software not working?

    Just want to share this.
Coming from a clevo P170EM with 3610/7970m. And damn, i love my MSI so much more. Less noise, cooler, faster, stronger. There is not even one point where i see an advantage for the clevo.

The gaming laptop of my dreams came true.

Hey all Ive got the msi gt783 and ive searched alot but was unable to find the answer im looking for. Is it possible to upgrade the screen to a 120hz 3d screen? I know the motherboard has the 40 pin lvds connector. From what Ive read it might work with a 720p resolution but not 1080p res. Any info on this would be great. Any opinions on weather this is a good upgrade, I dont have much 3d experience.
    Thanks.

Guys, recently had problem with my GT780DXR.

It detects my 2ndary HDD sometimes while sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes while I'm in a middle of gaming or doing my work, the HDD suddenly get undetected, it's very odd.

I already replaced the 2ndary HDD just a few days ago and this doesn't solve the problem. May I know if any of you had this problem?

Could it be the SATA port problem or is it the motherboard problem? Kindly advice, I'm very worried about this.

    Thank you.

Is it important for me to always update to the latest Intel RST?

Well, the problem comes randomly, it is solved at times when I shut down and power it on again. I wonder if the trouble is the SATA Port, I hope it's not the motherboard, sigh..

it would help to rule out if it might be the drivers causing this problem.

the drives in question, are they the ones that came with the computer?

I am getting a blank screen on my gt780.
I was playing dishonored and while I paused the game and went afk then came back to find the screen off (I thought it was the power saving feature) but even after moving the mouse and pressing the keys and power button nothing happened. So I forced it to turnoff by holding the power button.
Now the laptop powers up, fans start but screen is off, and hdd lights not blinking. The laptop will not boot.
I tried removing the battery and power cable and holding the power button down for 30 and 60 seconds and hat did not help.

Anyone have an idea how I can fix it? Or is my gt780 dead?

I had this happen on one of my older laptops. The back light on the LCD panel may have burned out.

Is your notebook a Raid model setup as raid0?

If so,with the drives removed, does it get past the logo screen?

This happens sometimes when a raid array is broken due to the failure of one of the member disks or the user improperly broke the array.

Upon opening the bottom of the notebook there's a red and black wire connector by the fan that leads to the CMOS battery.

With the main 9cell battery out of the notebook and the AC Power Adapter disconnected remove the red/black wire connector from the mainboard for a few minutes. This will reset the bios.

If it's a raid setup the raid needs to be set to non raid in the Intel Raid Utility and the drives as non member disks.

So,we really need to know how your notebook is setup, raid or non raid(AHCI).

originally it was in raid 0 but one of the discs failed so separated the raid leaving me with 2 independent discs. This kept the notebook working for about 2 months. Last friday night I put it to hibernate and when I turned it on saturday morning, it stopped working.

If I connect both discs, it shows me the raid utility. If I connect only one or none, it gets stucked in the msi logo.

ah the old hibernate problem, sry i can't help you more, i've never encountered that problem, i just disable hibernate since i don't need it. i'm sure there's a solution for that in this thread, try a search.

you can disable that in windows , open an admin/elevated command line and type: powercfg -h off

you'll also recup 16gigs of frees pace or whatever amount of ram you have.

@-=$tR|k3r=- : would you please add the troubleshoot/solution to this often encountered problem in the 1st post ? thanks.
