well that sucks, have you contacted msi about any new improvements to this?

i find it hard to believe a cpu would reject too much ram.

still, if you put it on ebay post a link here there might be somebody who'd want it.

The Intel chipset and CPU support more memory, but the MSI BIOS does not. We have been working on them to get this fixed, but so far they have not cooperated...which is strange because they usually do. Maybe soon we will see this fixed, so I wouldn't be in a big hurry to dump your memory.

As far as I was aware this is a limitation applied by intel on the dual core parts. If you move to an I7 (they can be picked up fairly cheap now) your slots will then become usable.

Hmmm, actually, no. See ARK | Intel® Core

The i5 CPU's will support up to 32GB, and if we ever get 16GB pieces of memory they should support up to 64GB.

I think this is just confusion over which models we are talking about, that is certainly odd behavior for the GT60 and GT70.

The GT78x series which are limited to the second gen core i series is hardware limited by the second gen i5s.

Its all a bit convoluted and it seemed silly for intel to do that, but at least it stopped with the 3rd gen (at least when msi patch the gt60 and gt70 bios).

I'm using the Fan Controller with RW-everything like shown by someone in the forum to stop the throttling and lover fan speeds at low temperatures and idle work. It worked like a charm previously but now on W7 x64 it seems to forget the settings after watching a movie or playing a game. It lowers revs after cooling down, but locks on around medium/low revs instead of going dead slow like before. I have to run the quiet.bat file again to stop the throtling sound again. Anyone has same problem?

Well, i wont throw it away (especially since if some of the module is corrupted, i can swap it with another one), but the thing is i dont have the cash for an i7 now (nor i know where to get one installed in Poland), and in the future it might be discontinued.

Also i decided to go with the i5 to have less heat to worry about, and to make sure the 180W PSU wont have a problem with it after 2-3 years.

On a side note, as i am still on warranty, id have to get the laptop to a specific place right?

180w is actually pretty overkill unless you have a 7970m ot gtx680m.

    Hey all,

It's been a while since I've been on here! I tried using the search thread, but didn't find anything on this minor problem. My battery LED indicator keeps flashing blue when my laptop is plugged in a fully charged. If it's unplugged or charging, the light is either off or a solid amber. I saw on the user manual that it will flash amber if the battery needs replacing. However, it still holds power good enough.

Like I said, it's minor but it's also irrating. Anyone have this problem? Thanks!

Don't want to misguide you, but on 780/783 680m can't work. You need an optimus capable/ready MSI, like 16F2/gt60/gt70.
But you can make 7970m work with awesome perfs, as powerfull as 680m without a doubt.

could be, but in a laptop? With no tv tuner cards? And m$ is pretty much abandoning Media center now (except for win8Ultimate and those who pay for MC), what would be the point for msi to start putting a receiver in their laptops now ?

Seems to me the money spent on that hardware would serve better put else where like better wifi card than bottom of the barrel centrinos or a good webcam that is better supported.

or my personnal fav, Optimus in the videocard.

well anyway, if that's the case, they have their reasons i'm sure. i just can't come up with one myself.

What about some lesser Nvidia GPUs, like a 675M? Will that work in a GT780?

I've yet to find 7970m MXM cards (though I admittedly haven't looked hard), but I seem to be able to find 675M cards fairly readily. A 680M is too spendy; halfway (or more) to a new laptop at that point.

Edit: Found a bunch of 7970m kits on eBay for different Clevo models. Will any of these work? If so, which kit is the best one to get (P150HM, P150/151/170EM, P370EM, x7200)?

Thanks,OK only trying without knowing is too expensive for me.But i looked for the GTX580M thats in my notebook on the NVIDIA homepage.
The GTX580M has the optimus technologie also. GeForce GTX 580M
I know the optimus is not available on the GT783
Maybe the change of the card is a nonsense loosing garantie etc.

My GT780DX is a year old today.

In the 1 year it's handled everything i asked it to do without any issues due to the hardware.

I had removed the stock 750GB 7200 hard drive the day I got it with an SSD.I also replaced the stock wireless card with a Killer 1103 and a 3rd antenna.

It now has 3 SSDs in it.The ODD is basically obsolete....put in an external box...and replaced with an SSD in a caddy.

The notebook has seen rather heavy daily and being bootied and rebooted several times a day.

It's been run on battery power at least once a week and often more.

The battery charges to 100% and lasts about 4+/- hours surfing and AC Power is still performing as new.

Windows 7 x64 has been great to use on this machine with a rare new driver problem.

Windows 8 Pro is not making me as happy.

Windows 7 will remain my primary OS for the foreseeable future.

hey WTP, good show, i like the mods you made. i'm still holding on to 1 hdd in 2nd bay, i took out the ODD and looking to do just that external someday, tho its not a big priority.

i've also installed a Killer 1103 tho i'm not too sure where i should place the 3rd antenna. TBH i'm not looking fwd to opening the screen to do that (if i have to do that). And i've yet to have them replace the keyboard that resets the speed to normal when i do a fn+key combo, but i can do that myself thanks to your videos.

As for windows, that's my idea too, win8 could be best on future touchscreen enabled devices and those touch-laptops are coming, but until then win 7 is where i'm at too. at least i'd advise to wait until win 8 SP1 comes out. if we go by the last 2 OSes that should fix a lot of things.

i can just imagine someday being called a dinosaur cuz i'm still using my mouse for everything,
Touch enabled devices is the future, but they'll pry my 17 button Naga mouse from my cold dead hands.

    lol

Someday i imagine the laptop designers will do away with keyboards and replace them with touch screens there too, like the Nintendo DS lol

    Hello all,
I'm new to this forum and I would like to ask you all a question. I have a MSI GT780R and would liketo perform a GPU upgrade as I have now the GTX560M I saw few comments ago, that should be possible to upgrade to 7970M, so basicaly I would like to confirm this and also if you have some suggestions where to find the upgrade kit. I found on google/ebay, but those are upgrade kits for alienware. Or is it the same kit as for my MSI?Will it work? Thank you for the replies :)

Sorry to ask a stupid question but does anyone know if the stock wireless card for the MSI GT780DX-406 can use the 5 GHz channel of a dual band router? Or can it only use the 2.4 GHz?

My N wireless router seems to be having issues and I was considering buying a dual band router to use the less crowded 5 Ghz channel. But I'm not even 100% sure my laptop can actually access it so I don't know whether I should buy one.

no the lil centrino is only able to do N 150mbps at 2.4ghz.

but you can get a bigfoot killer N 1103 for 60$ on ebay, it's a 3 antenna dual band card and we only have 2 antenas in our laptops but adding a 3rd one will only cost like 2$ for a set of 2 wires.

The trick is installing the 3rd ant, but without that 3rd antenna the killer N would still work fine at 300mbps 2.4/5ghz instead of full 450. i'm ok with that for now but i do want more out of my hardware so i will install it eventually, call it a rainy day project.

as for your router, have you flashed it? reset the config and reboot 2 or 3 times? Talked with the maker's or on their forums? it might save you some money. if its just software related. if its channel interference you're worried about try a lil program called inSSider to see what's around you to debug your channels. try channels 1,6 or 11.

if you choose to upgrade the wificard, member What'sThePoint has a tutorial&photos somewhere (maybe his profile) on how to install the 3rd antenna in the laptop.

Before you go out and spend your money on a wireless card upgrade think out your whole plan for your wireless networking.

The newest wireless routers conform to the 802.11ac standard and not the 802.11n standard. The 802.11ac is mostly an advancement of the 5ghz band. They maintain backward compatibility by having an N chip in the router also. These routers are new so they're in the $180~$200 range.

There's some very good N routers out there if you want to go that route.I can recommend the Netgear WNDR3800 for dual band 300Mbps and the WNDR4500 for dual band 450Mbps.

These routers work well with the Killer 1102,1202 and 1103 wireless cards plus the Intel dual band 300Mbps and 450Mbps lineup.

The 804.11ac routers have been around since June but sadly there's no internal mini pci-e 802.11ac wireless cards yet only a Netgear WNDA A6200 USB WiFi adapter that's 802.11ac.

Pairing a Netgear R6300 or WNDR4500 router with a Killer 1103 or Intel 6300 wireless card plus 3rd antenna might be the best hardware you can combine today.

On step down would be a 300Mbps Netgear WNDR3800 paired with a killer 1102/1202 or an Intel 6200,6205,6230 or 6235 depending on whether you want Bluetooth or not. These wireless card use the 2 existing antennas that are in the GT780DX.There's one on each side of the camera .The antenna wires go through the hinges and connect to the wireless card that's located under the Touch Control Bar near the power-on button.

D-Link recently announce an 802.11ac dual band router.Buffallo also has one if you want to go with an "ac"router.

Because of my previous experience as an owner of the Netgear WNDR3700v2 and WNDR4500 I again chose Netgear and bought the R6300.

If you're in the same room and in line of sight with your properly setup N router the stock N130 shouldn't be a problem but once you are out of sight with walls, floors and distance coming into play the stock card will in all probability start to experience weaker signal strength and you may suffer dropoffs, lag and disconnects.

Good Internet Service helps a lot too.

Check your wireless signal strength with the FREE inSSIDer program.

It's very important if you're using windows 7 to set your router's security setting to WPA2 AES for best performance.

Wow, thanks for all the responses! I didn't expect such detailed answers.

I downloaded the inSSIDer program and tried changing my channel to one that wasn't used by so many people around me to see if that helps. I will also consider the many options you guys mentioned if I continue to have issues.

One more question, I tried changing my router's security setting to WPA2 AES but I don't see that as an option under my linksys router. Could it be under another name?

Make sure you have the newest firmware installed for your router and the newest driver for your wireless card.

In your router's wireless setup which security options do you have?
    WEP
    WPA
    WPA2
    WPA2-PSK(AES)
    WPA-PSK(TKIP)

I live in a multi building highrise complex where inSSIDer often shows at least 80 SSIDs on the 2.4ghz band but only me on the 5ghz.

Picking the least used channel on the 2.4ghz band should help somewhat in getting a signal.

Cordless phones, microwaves,Bluetooth signals and large metal objects are some of the things that can affect WiFi on the 2.4ghz band.

You can also try moving around your location with your notebook in-hand while inSSIDer is running to find the best reception spots.

In this case, login to your LinkSys (Cisco) router, and set your wireless security to 'WPA2 Personal'. You may also find an option there to choose between 'TKIP' or 'AES'.

    Linksyshelp: What's the difference between WEP, WPA-Personal, WPA2-Personal, WPA-Enterprise, WPA2-Enterprise, and RADIUS?

As others have mentioned, it is very important to insure your router's firmware is up-to-date. While logged into the router somewhere with the interface, there should be a place to check and update the firmware. Which LinkSys model do you have? If you decide to upgrade your 'stock' wireless card, as WhatsThePoint mentioned, the NetGear WNDR-4500 or R6300 are excellent dual-band choices.

Also, a couple other FREE, simple, and easy to use, wireless site survey tools to try.....

I don't see any real difference other than labeling, as a result of Killer aligning with Atheros. If you are upgrading from the stock wireless card, remember you will need the third-wire antenna mod to get top wireless-N performance. Your wireless router will also need to be dual-band, and capable of top wireless-N performance, as well. The stock wireless card also doubles as a BT card, so you will lose this functionality when upgrading to the BigFoot 1103..... but if you use BT, all you will need is an inexpensive mini-USB BT dongle.

    :)

Scylene, it's thanks in big part to TWP for being a wealth of information in this thread. We're lucky to have such knowledgeable people here.

as for AES, I suspect not all linksys routers to have that setting, my little E1200 doesn't.

Maybe they removed the option only using AES from now on ?

anybody here with GT780 GT60 GT70 laptop are willing to open your back panel and using voltmeter measure power coming from the keyboard backlight plug terminals? (12 pins) Im about to perform the backlit keyboard mod in to my GT683R but would appreciate if at least voltage rating would be known prior doing any kamikaze tests :) would highly appreciate your help!

Ran the msi update and it ruined my laptop! I bought my gt780dx about 1 year ago and when I registered it, was given a link to download an msi update module. Thought that was good thing. I used it today and it scanned my computer and suggested what I needed to update. I did as suggested. NOW, I cant boot past the welcome screen and recovery and safemode dont work. I called msi and was told that "update" module is not meant for notebooks... Now I have to send it in to msi for repair of the windows 7 registry and/or controllers. That will also mean all my data will be removed... Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone have a fix?

Have you tried a clean installation of Windows 7 or a system restore?

If your notebook was shipped with Windows 7 installed you can press F3 on bootup to access the Recovery Partition.

You can make a USB Windows 7 x64 installation media if you don't have one.

    See the post linked below.

Installed the Samsung 840 (non-pro) SSD and thought I'd post some numbers. Not sure if these are an ideal representation of performance so let me know if they look ok. I also upgraded to Win 8 Pro.

You have CDM set to 0-Fill.

That's good for SSDs that shine with compessible data and SandForce controllers.

Try setting it to default so it tests your SS 840 with 100% uncompressible data.

Your 4K Writes seem a bit low but otherwise they are good for that SSD with that much data installed on it(60% used).

You might also want to try benchmarking with Anvil Storage Utilities also set to 100% uncompressible.

You're right about the average scores for that non Pro 840 SSD in a notebook.

The 840 Pro gets much higher write speeds especially in the small files where 80% of daily disk access is.

The 4K scores are the important ones.

Try updating your Intel RST version to version 11.6.2.1002 to see if it makes much of a difference.

    intel drivers pour Raid/Sata/Ata/Ahci

You can see here in this very importnant non synthetic benchmark that the Vertex 4 doesen't even make it into the top 20.
