ah, so nothing happens when you turn it on or do you hear the fan and maybe some lights come on ?

might want to remove the gpu again and reseat it properly. redo the thermal paste aswell.

Ah, would that I could return to W7 - because of course I never had an installation disc and my W8 install was a fresh install. And no... to my chagrin I did not create a recovery disc on the day I got my laptop... oops.

So, u guys r having many problems with Windows 8 pro on GT780 DX?
Im thinking of upgrading to windows 8 (after formating my SSD) but I'm a little afraid.
All drivers / performance going well? (Including P1 + afterburner )?

    Thank you forum (>'.')>

    Hello,

I am new to this forum and would like to tell you about the recent problem I've been having with my GT780DXR.
First of all - here are my specs: 8GB of RAM, 570GTX, Intel Core i7 2670 2x 750GB hard drives with Raid 0, running Windows 7 x64.
Now, a couple of months ago my laptop started overheating and freezing when playing games. After opening it up and cleaning the fan/vents, the temperature settled down, yet the crashing is still there.
Currently what's happening is that upon reaching temperature above 60*C it crashes, despite being on game, watching videos or leaving it on idle. The screen goes black or simple freezes, and I need to hold the power button down to manually shut it off. After that, it only starts up after 2nd/3rd try, and it still takes some time. Enforcing the fan manually keeps the temperature down, but it works only for less intense games.
All of my drivers have been updated, BIOS is still as it was, MSI afterburner does not allow fan control and ntune gives me a BSOD.
I've done a complete format before when the problem originally started, but there was no change. I'm running out of options and really don't want to be stuck with an overpriced MP3 and video player...
    Any information/ideas/links are appreciated.

    Thank you for your time

    -Hinter

On the hardware side it could be a problem with the AC Power adapter.

If you run on battery power just surfing the net for an hour or so do you have any issues?

Are you still using a raid0 array?

To find if it's software related you should do another clean install of the OS on only a single drive after properly braking the raid arry in the Intel Raid Utility and removing one of the hard drives that formed the array.Single drives can be setup with the bios set to Raid or AHCI.

After the installation of Windows 7 x64 "only" installation

    THEN Intall;

the newest Intel chipset installation software,
    intel drivers pour chipsets

    Nvidia driver 310.90,
    Drivers | GeForce

    Realtek HD Audio driver 6.0.1.6809
    Realtek drivers Audio

Your Intel or Killer wireless driver

    Intel:
intel drivers pour chipsets Reseaux (Lan) & Wifi (Wireless)

    Killer:
Killer Gaming :: Support :: Driver Downloads

Then install 1 game and run it without any overclocking or installing any other software.

anyone tried this "Intel® Rapid Start Technology" on win 7 64?

saw the download on intel drivers pour chipsets and figured it might help me with my slow boot process.

Sorry to say but the GT78x series notebooks do not support this technology.

You need a 7 series chipset.

BTW,newegg has the 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD for $214 until January 16th.

too bad about the series 6 in the laptop. what amazes me tho is my mother's HP G6 boots under 10 seconds to desktop. i've seen this msi do that only on 3rd or 4th reboot after a fresh install. once the windows updates hit tho, its up to 14 or 15 seconds.

anyway, thanks for the heads up on the ssd, amazon.com had it for 5$ more than newegg. And since i had an xmas gift card there, i jumped on it !

i'll be changing my signature below next week when i get it from my contact in the us lol

The last time I used Boot Racer it reported a half full 240GB SanDisk Extreme at 15 seconds using Windows 8 Pro and a 25% full 750GB WD at 36 seconds.

Since my latest clean installations I don't have Boot Racer installed or the spinner. All 3 internal drives are now SSDs.

I'm trying not to buy any more SSDs until I buy an MSI GT series with a Haswell CPU in a few months or so.

i'd go for Haswell too, i'd just need to sell this laptop 1st

will keep you posted on boot racer and next week when i get the samsung with a fresh install on that or both.

IMO Windows 7 x64 is presently the best operating system for the GT78x series of notebooks.

I have Windows 8 Pro installed on the secondary drive and devote at least 1 day a week to using it.I have the Classic Shell installed to get back missing features that are in Windows 7.I haven't found anything that W8 does better than W7 on my GT780DX but your mileage may vary.

When W7 was released there was a choice to still get XP instead of W7 if the purchaser wanted.

With new notebooks there's no choice.

Luckily this region where I currently reside sells most MSI notebooks without an OS included or installed.

    Hy guys!

I'm thinking about upgrading my 780 with a 675mx. Has anyone tried that yet? I was wondering if it would work or not.
I'll only buy one if I'm absolutely sure it'll work.

First of all, thanks for ur reply ^_^ I was reading like 15 pages of this topic and didnt find much about win 8...

Windows 8:how much worse? I'm kinda tired of windows 7 to be honest, and everyone talks of 8 with some enthusiasm.
In games, win 7 is doing much better?

I used the W8 Preview from Feb 29th when it was released, the Release Candidate, the RTM and then I bought the $39 W8 Pro download.

You can do as I am doing by installing W8 on a secondary drive or on a drive in a caddy in the optical drive bay.

The issues I've had with W8 are mostly performance, wireless and software related.

The 3 drives in my system are all SSDs and my bios is set to raid but I don't have a raid array. They're all non member disks.

I have no use for the DVD so I removed it.

One last question: theres any problem is i use the P1 button + MSI afterburner at 720 / 1800?
I had no problems with artifacts, and the temperature is close to 79 ~ 80 degrees.
    Ps: GTX 570M here.

And now there is a strange problem ...
Today I decided to open my notebook rear to clean and remove any dust that was inside.
That's when I decided to also remove the copper sink that sits on the right side of the notebook, under which is the main cooler.
I realized there was thermal paste and left as it was, just removed the dust.
The notebook seemed normal until now, when I noticed that the gaming performance is very strange, with lags where it should not (like menus, for example) and even a game extremely light as league of legends, I found lags.

    I'm afraid i may have damaged something );
    Please help

Do you have a monitor or TV that you can plug in a HDMI cable from the notebook.

If you get a picture on the external monitor or TV it will mean it's probably the notebook lcd screen is bad.

If there's no picture on the monitor or TV it's probably the graphics card.

BTW,when you reapply thermal paste the old paste should be removed first with a thermal compound remover like Tuniq TR-1.There's no need to remove the graphics card or CPU from the notebook when repasting.

The you have removed the grapghics card /CPU make sure when you put it back it's fully into the socket and the heatsink is flat on the chip when you evenly tighten the heatsink screws.

i repasted a few cpu's and gpu's in my time and i always used rubbing alcohol 70% or higher, its cheap and can be found in all the pharmacies, and does a nice job.

remove old paste with Q-tips, then wipe off the cpu wth clean dry Q-tips and let dry a few minutes.

Make sure the hole in the corner of the cpu isn't clogged with old thermal paste.

i haven't done any repasting on this laptop, but i imagine its the same.

There is nothing special about the arrangement in the MSI machines in regards to repasting so the above is a good option, I always like to replace the thermal pads too if I can to 0.5mm (all of them have to replaced at once) this brings the core closer to the heatsink.

and did you re-paste properly ?

there was a debate whether a pea size dollop was enough versus a dime size.

personaly i have no idea which one is best, so i didn't touch mine for that reason.

@Whatsthepoint what's your idea on that one ?

I've found very little difference in the brand of premium quality TC when iI apply it to my CPUs and GPUs.

I use the surface spread method.

I wrap my index finger in plastic wrap and spread a small amount of TC over the surface of the chip and heatsink where they make contact after removing the old paste with a commercially made TC remover or 100% isopropyl alcohol.

Then I take an old credit card or single edge razor blade and squeegee off the excess.

The most metal to metal contact between the chip and heatsink the better the cooling.

The thermal paste is only needed to replace the air in the pores of the metal, machining marks or pockets of air from unflat contact.Air is a poor conductor of heat.

With Tuniq TX-2/3,MX-3 and Arctic Silver 5 I have 1st hand experience and find all to do a good job with about 1~2 degrees difference.

AS5 takes several days before it cures and yields the best cooling.

Yes,they recommend the surface spreed method for AC5.

Everyone should experiment with a few different TCs and different application techniques and perfect what works best for them.

The method I use works with every TC I tried.

If I could still find Tuniq TX-3 it would be the TC I would use now but unfortunately it was discontinued and replaced with TX-4 that IMO is not a worthy successor.

MX-3 and MX-4 are available in this region with good bang for the buck.

Too much paste is a big problem with the factory application of MX-2 on MSI Gaming Series Notebooks.

i have some MX5 from 2011 around here somewhere from when i did my other computer and i liked it very much, it wasn't runny or gooey and needs no curing time.

tho i'm just over cautious i guess so its always best to take it easy and keep an eye on your temps over a few days any time you repaste.

so these GT laptop have too much paste you say ? i know my old Q6600 in the desktop had alot of paste from Intel when i bought it, so maybe its par for the course, they want to put alot of paste so it will stay for years.

perso i just think if you use high quality paste you don't need to put too much, like you said you basically just fill the air between the heatsink and the cpu top, a thin coat should suffice.

If you have a barebones 1761 and not a branded MSI GT78x series then the warranty is for 1 year from the shipping date unless you opted to buy an extended warranty.

Out of warranty means you will also pay the shipping to and from XOTIC.

Hi guys. I looked 20 pages back on this forum but I couldnt find my error with this laptop.

I have an GT780DX laptop from MSi.

    My problem:
    A while back:
could play Company of Heroes and Hitman Absolution without any troubles or fps drops + I could play Counterstrike:GO on 60fps solid but it would have random moments of 3 minute long intense FPS drops.
    I updated my Nvidea driver:
Company of Heroes has massive FPS drops on all settings and MUCH MUCH WORSE, Hitman makes my laptop to drop death after around 10 minutes + CS:GO works almost perfect, the FPS drops are a lot less frequent, a lot shorter and a lot less intense
possible causes as found on various fora:
    1. Weak manifacturing by MSi/overheating because of
    source: MSi's own forum

    2. Driverissues

Maybe the new drivers override some kind of MSi cooldown service wherby the game drops a few fps in order to cool down causing it to automatically turn the laptop off (this would make sense for Hitman but not for CoH imo)

    source: my own thinking

    3. Powerissues/Adapterheating
source: MSI GT780 Laptop Shuts Off During Games - techPowerUp! Forums

The power supply is insufficient. This could be the case but why did it work just fine before then?

    EXTRA
I see a lot of you people around here with problems that arised after you opened the laptop and cleaned it. So is it save to do it?

Anyone has the same experiences? Any suggestions?

btw: I know I have only one post on this website, this one. But I will come back here very frequently and if one of you posted a suggestion, solution, question or anything I will answer, post the results and in the end I will say what worked!

Conclusion: CPU temperature stays at about 80 degrees but GPU rises from 75 idle to 99 just before the crash.

hope you can read this? Im dont know how to interpret these results but to me it seems like a GPU overheat

    @Jannelientje

There's no need to remove any parts from the notebook except the fan to do cleaning. With the bottom plate removed there's only one screw holding the fan in place.

The silver colored metal plate on the fan can be removed to clean the fan blades with a small brush.

With the fan removed blow the dust out of the radiators from the inside to the outside.

The only time the heatsinks should be removed is to repaste with new TC after completely removing the old TC.

Very often after owners reinstall the heatsinks after having removed them for repasting they don't tighten the screws evenly resulting in the heatsinks not being flush thus not doing proper cooling.

If you are sure your TC is good and the heatsinks are covering the chips properly then look to software.

If there's no overclocking and your power plan is correct for gaming(performance) then there could be a bad driver or bad driver installation.

NVIDIA graphics drivers should be installed using Custom Installation and only the driver and physX installed and the Clean Installation box checked.

How long has it been since you did a clean installation of Windows 7 x64?

Is your primary boot drive an SSD or hard drive?

During the 14 months I've owned my GT780DX the only issues I've had are software related and most being crashes from bad NVIDIA drivers. So far I haven't had any crashes with the NVIDIA 310.90 driver surfing or playing Black Ops II campaign with latest patches.

I do clean installs of W7 about every 3 or 4 months.

wow seriously high temps for idle. how long after booting were these taken?

Right now my idle temps vary from 50c to 54c and that's with my fan speed modification for lower fan noise (less woosh)

i'd redo both of your thermal pastes on cpu and gpu asap before anything bad happens.

Also retake those temps without any programs loaded in memory and non essential M$ services (msconfig)

Addin to WTP's post about repasting, i quote:

the screw tightening method is in a X pattern, you start by screwing half way of 1st screw then the opposite corner half also then the other corners, then comeback to the 1st and screw until you feel it touch the back plate, then the opposite corner, and so on in a X pattern. then back to the 1st screw to tighten it more and opposite corner and so on until it can't be thightned anymore.

This is your best bet to ensure the paste is still even after tightening all screws on the heatsink.

My room temperature is 20C and this GT780DX notebook has been running for over an hour surfing.

MSI Afterburner shows my GPU at 44C

Real Temp shows CPU at 45C

Ask your local pharmacy if they have any 100% isopropyl alcohol.

The trouble with rubbing alcohol/pads is that they contains additives. These additives will leave a residue. The residue will get into the metal's pores and reduce the TC's heat transfer ability.

To see the residue, place a few drops of the rubbing alcohol on the glass of a picture frame that is laying flat and let it evaporate.

The lower the alcohol content the lrger the additives. The additives are mostly perfumes for aromas, astringents and antiseptics.

    Amazing tips man! :notworthy:
Especially the one about the clean install of the NVIdia driver!
Could you please give other tips?
Maybe on the order of drivers, something secret and useful for performance, what is REALLY necessary to install and what is unnecessary?

Also remember that some people commented that SSD needs to be formatted in a specific way. Which way would that be?

    Thank you so much man!

    Erasing,Formatting,Deleting

When you get a new SSD and install it inside the notebook the next step is usually to install Windows on it.

Sometimes you'll get a message that there's no drive or Windows cannot be installed on the drive.

This is usually because the drive wasn't initialized and formatted first.

This can be done in Control Panel>Admin Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management

If you wish to do a clean install on an SSD that previously had data on it there's 3 methods of clean the data off that are most commonly used;those being secure erase, diskpart and plain old format during the Windows installation.

The purists will say the only way is a secure erase.

I've used all 3 methods and found no difference in performance of the Windows installation.

Now I mostly just do deleting and formatting at the disk options screen.

During a Windows Custom Clean Installation there's Disk Options.

Clicking on it opens a window showing all partitions on the drive.

Now you should format all of the partitions and then delete all of the partitions until there's only one remaining where the space on disk is exactly the same as available space.

Now you're ready to install the Windows files.

If installing from a USB stick remove it during the 1st reboot of the installation.

When the installation completes the Intel Chipset Installation Software should be installed and the NetFramework 4.5.

I don't overclock my hardware so I don't normally install the NVIDIA OC Tool.

Hardware failures are rare for me.Almost all issues I have are driver/software related.

I use headphones and earbuds about 98% of the time so usually no THX installed.

I don't have a DVD in the optical bay and I have no other need for the S-Bar so I don't usually install it.

SSDs performance depends a lot on the firmware and amount of data on the drive.

When looking at SSD reviews on the Internet look for ones where the drives are tested with data on them and not empty drives where they all mostly look good.Reviews of clean empty drives are much easier to do and are mostly intended to make the manufacturer look better than the product is.

Reviews showing various file types transfer speeds are good also.

Drives that have consistency and do well with both compressible and incompressible data are the ones to look at.

Small file reads/writes of 512K or smaller are the benchmark numbers of most importance. This is where 80% of daily disk access occurs

    Memory Test86 updated.
    Enhancements in v4.1.0 (Jan/2013)

Added a new boot trace option that single steps through the testing process and displays messages and data that is valuable in diagnosing problems with test execution. A large number of trace points have been added in key portions of the code (in particular SMP startup routines) to provide visibility of obscure failures. This feature will allow non-technical users to provide troubleshooting data for better test stability.
Added a new One Pass feature. This feature runs the complete test once and then exits, but only if there were no errors. This provides a convenient method for unattended testing. One Pass may be enabled via a boot option or via an on-line command.
Images for CD, USB key and Floppy disks now use Syslinux for booting and include a variety of standard options and two previous versions of Memtest86. The new boot time options may be specified at the boot prompt.
A feature has been added to allow customization of the list of tests to be run. The test list may be specified via a boot option or via an on-line command.
A feature has been added to restrict specific CPUs that are to be used for testing. The maximum number of CPUs may be specified or a 32 bit CPU mask may be specified. These are enabled with boot options.
A number of problem with use of on-line commands when testing with more than one CPU have been fixed.
A selection of boot time parameters are were added. These options enable boot tracing, the One Pass feature, limit the maximum number of CPUs to use, specify a CPU mask to select CPUs to be used and setup serial console parameters.
Improved and extended CPU identification routines. Newer CPUID based method is now used to determine cache sizes for Intel CPUs for better accuracy and support-ability.
Routines for calculating cache and memory speeds have been reworked for better accuracy. An overflow problem has been fixed that resulted in no memory speed being reported for CPUs with large L3 caches.
Fixed some errors in the crash reporting routines.
Misc minor fixes and code cleanup.

that's not so bad, about a dvd's worth of content. Crysis 3 beta isn't on steam yet.

All i remember from watching the various videos of the game over the xmas break is the hunter one, with the bows and arrows and those "Alien" like creatures running around in tall grass and a train depot.

i'm not into hunting with bows&arrows much, but maybe after i see more videos and get more an eyefull of what else there is to do, i might get more into it.

i struggled to "get in the game" in crysis 1, it just didn't appeal to me as much as left4dead.
i haven't even started playing crysis 2 yet (got it last summer on sale on steam, i loved the urban video of N.Y.)
and idk about this 3rd one. i hope the suits are easier to handle. its the damn battery always needing to recharge after just a few seconds of invis or running.

Don't they have some sort of recharge when you run ?

well anyway, if i can get into the 2nd and get back into the story line, there might be a chance i get crysis 3.
