When a notebook goes in for service the bar code is scanned to reveal the notebooks date of sale and service history.

A paper sales slip is not needed for warranty repairs.

If it's still under warranty the bar code scan will show it.

Place the notebook on it's side like an open book, this way it circulates air better. Turn it on and check the GPU with it's heatsink removed. Do not let it boot to Windows (press F11 for that). If it gets really hot then there is something with the GPU. If not, there is a little power mosfet near the GPU on the motherboard. Touch it so not to burn yourself. If you can't keep your finger on it for more than 10sec than it's definitely the GPU causing you trouble. It's putting strain on the motherboard power regulators. Did you check if the thermal pads are ok? Since putting the heatsink back on in these models it's a bit tricky, some of your thermal pads may have slipped out of position.

The AUO B173HW01 v4 is a 60hz glossy type panel with a 95% NTSC color gamut.

The AUO B173HW01 v5 is a 60hz matte type panel with a 95% NTSC color gamut.

The 120hz refresh rate lcd panels have a 50pin male plug that connects to the 50pin female on the motherboard.

Unfortunitly the GT78x series has only a 40pin motherboard connector under the touch control bar so the higher refresh panels are not compatible.

It's only 60hz panels for MSI owners.

Fan change? What's wrong with your fan?Mine works fine.

Yeah those are the best panels (90% gamut btw), the fans in notebooks are 100% custom and not upgradable.

Chimei panels from 780/783 can be overclocked without any trouble @85-90 hz. It isn't 120hz still, but gives you a big improvement over 60hz in game.

i'm not too keen on buying that from them on amazon, they don't seem to have a dead pixel policy and seem to switch the actual parts for other numbers, as read in the comments.

Does MSI or its partners offer screen upgrades this cheap ?

    You're correct,it's the 15.6" B156WH01 v4 matte type and B156WH01 v7 glossy type that are 95%.

At 60hz every 2nd frame is a blank frame. At 120hz all frames are displayed. What do you get at 90hz?

This is new to me so please respond

I mentioned this in this thread awhile back stating MSI might have run out of motherboard replacements and were returning repaired notebooks with GT70 motherboards a GTX67xM graphics cards.

Did you get your original i7 Sandy Bridge CPU back or was the CPU changed also?

Hi all, i have a big problem whith my 780R, have a GTX 560m 1.5Ghz.

When i play the Battlefield 3 the problem appears. I play around 40-60Fps in medium quality. But in some times the fps drops to 10-20, impossible to play. But this is fast about 15s and the game back to 40-60fps.

I play in high, medium, low whitout any filters and have the same drops.

The temps is ok...80C max on CPU and 75C GPU in full load.I try many diferents drivers of nvidia.

I think the clock of GPU drops too, and this cause the problem, but a cant fix.

    Any Idea?

    Sorry my bad english.

    Best Regards fron Brazil

The CPU was not changed. Though I'm not too fussed about that.

Now I take it the standard GT783 screen doesn't support 3D? Any of those screens mentioned do perhaps? I'd fancy upgrading too.

@Cefamox That's what mine used to do until the GPU died on me. Then it just started restarting. I'd advice to clean it up to reduce the heat as well as if possible to change your thermal paste. If the GPU does die then the only option is to RMA it if you're still under warranty.

Not sure, I think the only way to get 3D is to get an HDMI external monitor/tv. Nothing mentioned so far is 3D, just much better visual quality and colors.

Since my 580M probably died, and I don't have enough money to buy a new one now, I am wondering is there any way I could use internal graphics from processor, although i doubt it but, maybe?

3D screens are 50 pin while your GT7x screens are 40 pin, so you cannot make a 3D screen work on either the GT7x or GT6x series.

why do you assume you have no warranty anymore ? isn't your laptop more recent than mine and i still have a year on it (GT780DXR).

Did you check on your warranty status on the msi site?

i'd redo the paste since its most likely the cause of the problem. Safeguard the gpu/cpu as much as possible.

My friend bring this notebook to me fron US, and MSI dont give warranty of notebooks out of brazilian market. And only one year and this note have a one year and 3months since i buy.

The temperatures in game is good, gpu and cpu.But i have a lot of drops of fps in game, the fps drops stay low for a while and like magic back to the 50-60. In low, medium or high is the same.

    Sorry my english.

But before doing that, check that your power profile is set to normal or max performance.

what game are you playing when this happens ?

Although i agree, a clean format once in a while is good for the soul ;)

use a spare drive if you can, could be helpful in testing the issue. if it fixes the problem then good.

You should do the installation procedure from Whatsthepoint

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi...t780-gt783-owners-lounge-498.html#post8177509 post #4973

You get everything from that post you need to reinstall a lean clean gaming machine !

Download the win 7 iso and put it on cd or usb.
i've tested it myself and it will get you a good clean install.
Get drivers from driver-station, links on that post too.

write back with your findings ok ?

With MSI utilities like KLM,NVIDIA OC,THX,S-Bar the ones on the MSI GT780DX downloads may not be the newest that work so links in #4973 may be to different models.

After you get the OS installed the Intel chipset installation software should be installed next followed by the Microsoft netframework 4.5 so have them predownloaded onto a flash drive.

These are necessary for the other drivers, software and utilities to install correctly.

From all the discussion I see that the laptop IS capable of doing 2560x1600 over the HDMI out. Can someone please confirm that?
I've purchased a Dell U3014, it can do 2560x1600 over its HDMI, but somehow I'm only getting it to 1920x1080.

I'm considering it because of the recent pains I have gotten in my wrist, and the incline my laptop sits at with the cooler under it I'm sure is the culprit. 53.11 at walmart.com with free store pickup, so I think im gonna go ahead and get it. :D

Edit: I got 2 Guest Passes for StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty allows 7hrs of gameplay or 14 days free, whichever comes first.

Also have 2 Guest Passes for WoW 10 days of free play if anyone is interested, figured I'd ask in here since you guys are so helpful all the time. :D

@ShadowGearX yes. After a lot of experimenting I was able to get it going at 2560x1600@16bit. As I read it ( HDMI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) HDMI 1.3 can die 30 bits max on 2560x1600, so I really need to make sure I have a HDMI 1.4 cable. And these are harder to come by. Regular shops run 1.3 cables, because they are focused on 1920x1080.

About the Nostromo, I actually own(ed?) one, and a few other specialized keyboards as well. But I don't like them, they're too different and not worth the time to get used to. I feel playing on a regular keyboard is just as easy and you can more easily type something. So they're up in the attic I believe, or I gave them away.

Short follow up: I never understood this whole "HDMI 1.4 cable" thing, because cables are just pieces of copper and the connectors did not change. But, hey, apparently HDMI made a difference in cables, so I went along. After some research it turns out that there is no such thing as a HDMI 1.2/1.3/1.4 cable, you only have HDMI with or without internet. So both the laptop and monitor are HDMI 1.4 ( http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT780DX-GT780DXR-.html#?div=Specification) ( Dell Launches Sales of 30-inch professional display UltraSharp U3014 - battery zone), which means they should be able to do 2560x1600 @ 32 bit.

@tbee Where did you research into their not being different version of HDMI? A lot of device cables go through upgrades in the years, previous models of HDMI have much poorer transfer capabilities then newer cables, older cables dont support true surround sound for instance, and some don't support 3D playback, and some don't support certain color configurations. You're cable is probably your weak link.

You should take a moment and actually search some cables, you'll quickly notice that some cables support things other cables don't.

    @ShadowGearX:
Well, HDMI does have versions up to 1.4 and now 2.0 is under construction. But the standard only describes a protocol, a connector and how it is wired; basically the specs of the chip on either side of the cable. But a cable only has to be "good enough", there is no "1.3 or 1.4 support" on a cable. Even worse; the HDMI commitee apparently no longer allows the use of the term "HDMI 1.4 cable". You are of course correct that a cable must have been made well enough to support the data speed, but that is all (aside from the return audio line, or ethernet). If you search on the internet you'll find articles about this, like here Still more reasons why all HDMI cable are the same | TV and Home Theater - CNET Reviews These articles really do make sense; a piece of copper can simply only be "good enough", a cable can be "certified for".

Anyhow, I've just purchased a 1.4 cable and the problem remains. I'm now focusing on the data speed (resulting in Width x Height x Bits x Frequency) that the U3014 allows over HDMI.

One of the advantages of the new workstations and our overclocked model is that they offer a displayport to connect up to a high res monitor as HDMI has always seemed to give people issues.

Frankly, I'm amazed that a laptop in this price category only features a HDMI and VGA out. At the time of purchase I assumed HDMI would be sufficient and not cause a problem, but alas. HDMI to DVI does solve anything.

Part of it I think is the fact the casing was re-used and they wanted to keep the eSATA port (something the models I talked about give up), also DP was still very new at the time of the GT780 series release.

    Hi All,

I am msi GT780DX user and I have an issue recently about this laptop, I would really appreciate if anyone here could help me or share your information about what I have been encountered.

The problem that I face is that I cannot play game efficiently such as Diablo III and SC II Heart of the Swarm. For D3, my laptop cannot perform more than 33 FPS and when I play, no matter in single or multi-player mode, the lag spike occur and FPS drops to 7-30 DPS. I can play with 20 FPS and all low and close some settings both of multi-player and single mode, but I think this model can perform better than this.

For SCII, I have no choice but have to set low setting otherwise the lag of FPS occurs.

The temperature of this GPU is approximately like this

SETTINGS, AIR CONDITIONER, COOLER BOOSTER, FPS, TEMP

    DIABLO 3 1. LOW YES YES 20 63-73
    2. LOW NO YES 20 70-75
    3. LOW NO NO 20 73-83
    4. HIGH YES YES 33 67-75
For number4, I cannot play if I open cooler booster and set this setting at the same time.
The FPS is not stable and lag spike and skipping frame rate occur.

SC II LOW YES YES XX 70-78
    HIGH NO YES XX 8X
I cannot play at high setting of this game. lag spike of animation.

*** By the way, If I set to high setting in D3 and open Window media player to listen mp3 and open cooler booster at the same time, the sound is distort like " pub pub pub " on my speaker. Also, If temp go high to 80C ( no matter what setting or game ), the distorted sound occur the same with or without turn the cooler booster on. ***

I did some of the following in order to solve the problems.
    1. Install win 8, 3 times.
    2. try to use NVidia driver from msi (305.46) and NVidia website
    (314.22)
    3. install direct x 9.0c
    4. update window 8
    5. use window 7 home premium recovery from which embedded in msi hard disk partition
    6. set to gaming mode on SCM program.
    7. install both game again
    8. set high performace in NVidia program .In 3D setting, I also set to high performace to Texture filtering quality and prefer maximum performace to power management mode.
    9. clean all dust at the fan and air vent.

    So, Here is my questions.

    1. Is it possible that I need cooler paste on my CPU and GPU to decrease temp? I have bought this laptop for 1.5 year.
    2. Is this CPU or GPU Throttling? see at *** quote above
    3. Is it possible that my mainboard cannot generate enough power for
    my fan and GPU?
    4. Anyone that play D3 and SCII, what is your maximum setting and FPS that you can adjust?
Do you have problem like me?

If you have info. that want to share me, I really appreciate :) thanks in advanced.

Slightly wrong thread but the GT70 can take up to a 3940XM (unofficial or 3840qm officially) and up to a GTX680M video card (new heatsink required). The raptor does not work in notebooks i'm afraid but the caching SSD + HDD setup is much quicker anyway.

Remember the port under the optical drive or next to the GPU is the primary and only SATA III slot, the other bay is SATA II, so SSDs in the main and HDD in the secondary.
