    Hi mate,

Try this first: remove the PSU from the wall socket and from the notebook. Next open up the bottom panel and remove the bios' power connector. It's that small red/black cable attached to the motherboard. Remove the fan and then the gpu heatsink. Be very carefull when pulling up the heatsink since the thermal pads MSI uses are a bit sticky. Next is the card. Take it out carefully. Smell the card (sorry I'm not trying to be sarcastic here :p) If it smells like something burning it's the gpu. Put the fan back and try to turn on the notebook.
This way you clear any charge left on the capacitors and reset completely the notebook.

    Anyone get this at all?

"The speed of processor 7 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 1 seconds since the last report."

I'm getting this message for processors 0-7, I also randomly get windows asking me to turn down my settings for Aero desktop to help performance which probably should not be happening with 16gb ram, a 675m, and an i7-2760QM.

My temps since getting the laptop back have been a little high, a friend of mine stated that I should let it break in a bit since its been less then 2 weeks. I hit 99c on my cpu and 91c on the GPU but it was only an instant, the temps seem to be sticking between 86c-96c for the cpu and 76c-92c for the gpu when gaming and depending on the game. Opinions?

temps while gaming look a lil high to mee but what's your idle temps in safe mode ? Leave it without apps for a good 5-10mins to see.

They are a bit high for idle temps. I think it's that repasting might help a bit ;)
Also check if the heatsink are placed properly and making contact with the Vrms and ram chips on the 675.

while you're at it, you should reseat the card in the slot to make sure it makes good contact.

The larger chasis gives you a bit more room for ventilation (and cooling mods). I have installed a 7970m in my GT780DX and it runs pretty cool. Never went higher than 76 degrees celcius.

There is actually no extra internal space in the 17 inch machines over the 15 inch ones actually.

Temps are definitely too high. You got it back from service? You might need to repaste. Check for dust in the fan, but if it's not clogged or dirty, then the paste job was done improperly.

I sent it clean as a whistle to MSI, but I did not pull it apart when I got it back. It's been about 2 weeks now with no temp improvement so I got some Arctic Silver 5 (best I could get locally) Anyone got any tips or or whatnot? Best way to clean off old paste? I haven't done this since 2001, things were bigger then lol.

Edit: N/M on tips, I remembered that WTP and smitty made some suggestions so I used that wonderful search button at the top and found my answers! Thanks guys!

I'm going in, wish me luck lol:thumbsup:

Edit: So it's done, temps are much better the paste job MSI did seemed botched from looking at it I took a couple of pics opinions? I did forget to re-seat the card like you suggested smitty. Think I should do it again? Also, what is that tape-like stuff I circled? There were a bunch of those and a couple of them looked just like that one, kinda torn up and falling apart

The tape you have circled appears to be thermal tape that's used on the graphics card heatsink to make contact between the heatsink and memory chips.

If you're using isopropyl alcohol to remove the old paste I suggest not using rubbing alcohol since it is not 100% and contains additives that will leave a residue thus defeating the purpose of the cleaning.

Maybe you can ask a local pharacy for 100% ethyl or isopropyl.

I use Tuniq TC-1.You can get it from newegg or the one made by Arctic.

The paste is only needed to fill the pores in the metal of the chip and heatsink so it replaces the air.Air is a poor heat conductor. The more metal to metal contact between chips and heatsinks the better the cooling so don't use too much paste as MSI does.

After applying the AS5 to chips and heatsinks squeegee the excess off with the straight edge of an old credit card.

You should replace any damaged thermal tape with new 0.5mm tape

ok, so I'll have to get some thermal tape and do it again I followed your post some pages back and did it the paste just like you said, I have 100% ethyl that I used. After it was apart I noticed the tape, so its no biggy to do it again. :D Thanks for the response

From the pictures, it looks like the thermal paste was a bit too thin, so it wasn't properly transferring heat. It needs a tiny bit more.

I have industrial contact and electronic cleaners that destroy thermal paste haha, I used that and repasted myself. I now run cooler and overclocked easily :)

Good thing you opened and corrected the issue.

I can't, it broke. I had to send the computer to MSI to fix.

EDIT: So, I flashed BIOS to the latest unlocked WTP posted in his awesome driver list post. So....what can I play with now?  :err: :wideeyed:

EDIT 2: So, I just discovered an issue. NONE of my USB external drives will open up. They get power, they show up in the device list, but they don't show up in the Computer window as an accessible drive. I have 2 USB sticks that work fine, and let met access the information but my external HDD's will not. The Stick, Mouse, KeyPad, & Game pad controller all work in every single USB port. Could really use a hand with this issue for sure. They also show up in BIOS when I enter the menu.

I'm seeing in event viewer messages about something called "BitLocker-driver event ID 24620" I did a search and apparently this is a rare glitch, I did happen across this though http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=152105.0 its the only recent thing I did, though that topic is REALLY old. I'm not really finding an actual fix or cause for this problem. I don't really understand it at all to be honest. The drives do show up in Disk Management also, but I just can't access them

EDIT 3: Problem is fixed, lord knows how but my auto mounting was disabled so I did "mountvol /e" in CMD turned it back on.

P.S - Does anyone else get static through their speakers with a headset plugged in? With my headset in every time I remove or put in a usb device I get a bit of static.

Definitely check the forums. Several users have upgraded their GPUs however you can probably bump into a couple of issues. First is to determine if you are using optimos or not, and also the heatsink used on nvidia GPUs si different than radeon GPUs so you will have to find a heatsink or modify your current. As long as your chipset suppors Sandy bridge you should have no problem upgrading to a core i7.

    Guys, I got a question.

What is usually the temperature where the GT780DXR overheats?

I had experienced this twice while playing Assassin's Creed 3 all normal settings with turbo and turbo fan on, I think it's time for a clean up?

    I OC'ed my GPU though, 700/1400/1650.

    Any advice and suggestions?

I was wondering if any one could tell me what the matter. I have the gt780 model. The problem I am having is when I plug my power supply into the laptop the charging light blinks and I hear a squeaking noise. I think it is either the power supply since I can wiggle the cable and it will start to charge, but I recently tried a new power supply and have the same problem.

If this is a hardware issue would this be a easy fix or would I need to take this to a repair shop?

It sounds like your pin on the charging board is broken, which will require a trip to the repair shop, or back to your original reseller.

If it is the charge board could I repair is myself and how would I know for sure it is the charge board? Would I see a crack on the board or a pin missing?

If you try to do the repair yourself you risk voiding your warranty. That is a board level repair that most local technicians wouldn't touch...it is better to send it in to your original reseller or MSI for repair.

Thank you for the help. I most likely wont be doing the repair myself.

One other issue that I have could drivers cause a blue screen? I asked this because two months after I received my laptop I had blue screens every other day. After I updated all my drivers the blue screens went away.

    welcome JDE3ZY

it's a good machine, tho i would right away reinstall a real windows 7 64 bits with fresh drivers as it may get you that extra oompf to play games. The recovery partition by MSI is very outdated and its drivers might not be the best performing.

That said, you should make your recovery dvds before going any further as it may save your bacon someday. you'll need 3 blanks.

Then reinstall with the method described here by Whatsthepoint
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi...t780-gt783-owners-lounge-498.html#post8177509

I noticed windows works faster than MSI's own recovery CDs when you install all the right drivers right away. If you only have 1 hdd or ssd, do not install the intel RST drivers, keep the windows ones.

For the latest drivers, check the 1st post of this thread, you should have everything you need in there and they are also listed in the reinstall procedure.

if you have questions, feel free to post them.

do you have an SSD in your laptop ? that will help tremendously with booting and loading.

ps: you should list your laptop's hardware in your signature too..

    Hey Smitty123,

i would like to thank you for the quick and responsive reply to my question , i am very new to the pc world so i dont know what i really need to do, i bought this laptop 2nd hand and he had everything installed already. it came with Windows 7 gamers edition so do i still need to un-install that and re-install a new 64bit windows 7? could it be that the Gamers edition is not a good OS? i really dont know what is going on with this laptop.. my drivers for my GPU is up to date and everything.

    my specs
    Msi GT780
    intel i5 2410 ( sandy bridge ) 2.30ghz - 3.1 ghz
    8gb ram
    500 GB HHD
    Gpu : Gforce GTX560m

PS: i think i do have a SSD slot but i dont have card for it.

yunno the choppiness in games could be due to a number of things, check to see if your power plan is set to max or normal and not power save. its in the little battery icon next to the clock on the bottom right.

idk this gamer's edition of windows, its not official from M$. could be riddled with viruses and malware.

Well since you're new to computers an SSD replaces your HDD , its not a slot, it's inside the computer. if you want an SSD i'd go for a samsung 840 256gb with the transfer kit. you just plug the ssd in the usb port, copy your current windows to it and then put the SSD where the old hdd was inside the computer.

Tho i would recommend you reinstall from scratch with the method WTP outlined. put your ssd in the computer where the hdd was and boot with the usb key you make in that post.

its all in his post and i've tested it multiple times with a usb 2 port, the usb 3 on these computers are not gonna work without some complicated workarounds, but if you stick to usb 2 ports you shouldn't have any problems.

Download all your drivers before you start reinstalling. that way you won't be stuck if you're without network access or another computer.

good luck i hope this fixes your choppiness in games.

I hope you got a really realy good price on the notebook!

The model you bought was first available 2 years ago.

Most gamers bought them with an i7 CPU,not an i5.

The GTX560M was quickly replaced by the GTX570M in the GT780DX model and then a few months later with the GTX580M in the GT783.

The GTX560M will struggle with graphics demanding games.

The Windows 7 Gamers Edition is a Frankenstein build and should not be used.

Remove 7 screws and take off the bottom cover.

Look if the fan is clean.Remove the 1 screw holding it in but don't disconnect the wires.Clean the vent fins for the GPU and CPU if they are full of dust.

Is there a hard disk with possible the name Western Digital on it?750GB?Scorpio Black Edition?

If it's a Scorpio Blue it will have much lower performance.

Is there an empty drive bay?

If there are no memory modules in the bottom 2 slots then your memory is under the keyboard.

I think you should do a clean Windows 7 installation as my friend Smitty suggests after saving anything on the drive you don't want to lose.

The first Windows clean install is scary for everyone but really there's nothing to fear if you follow the directions in my post #4973 or elsewhere on the Internet.

    JDE3ZY,

Aside from replacing your i5 with an i7 or to GTX570m with a new power brick (might not be suitable if you're a novice,) you won't be getting much boost in terms of fps. I have the same build as yours except with an i7 instead of your i5. The i5 will most likely bottleneck a lot of the games even the gpu drive ones and though gtx560m is sturdy, it is now antiquated and relatively weak.

I can't say for certain how mf3 is supposed to perform as i don't have that game but it sounds normal that you'd get 40-50fps on low. The stuttering on the other hand might be solved following the directions listed by the posters above me. If you're lost read this forum from page 1, I have yet to find any information regarding gt780 outside of this forum that wasn't already mentioned here.

I personally would save any money you'd spend on upgrades for a newer machine later on. Even the lowest tier gaming laptop will outperform your current one. Consider that a 128gb ssd is around US$120+ and the lowest tier gaming laptop is currently around US$1000+.

Also whoever you talked to that said your laptop will play new games at med high blah blah. Even if you talked to them 2 years ago. They're wrong. :p I got mine 2 years ago minus one month and that wasn't the case. But it has and still will outperform any nongaming laptops for sure.

    Anyhow, welcome to the club.

    @JDE3ZY

    Welcome aboard matte :)
You definitely need to upgrade your i5 and your 560m. An i5 doesn't cut it anymore for gaming. A friend of mine has a gx660. When I convinced him to upgrade from an i5-460m to an i7-720qm he thanked me all day :p
If you wish to go higher on the gpu, go with a 570m as suggested by WhatsThePoint (he is a reference here btw!) and desktopsheavyonlap.
Someone I know is selling his i7-2670qm for 100 euros on NBR's marketplace. Not bad for the price. I would consider that. The highest you can go with the gpu is a 7970m (also sold on the marketplace for a good price). Change your powerbrik before thinking about that card however. Your 120w is not enough.
For anymore questions we are here to help :)

The one that comes with any SSD kit should do fine manually if that's what you want.

Perso i use Macrium Reflect also does live backups when you install it.

Acronis Trueimage: Seagate & Western digital offer a free version of it on their site only if you have one of their hard drives installed but can copy any brand drive.

There are free and legit clone programs on Hiren's Bootcd and Ultimate Bootcd.

    Hi mate :)

When I say an upgrade I mean upgrade your current laptop compents (cpu and gpu). Selling yours and getting a new system would be a little more expensive.

Thanks once again for the reply Felix!

Since im very new to the PC world...i never knew you could change the components of my laptop since i was told once you buy a laptop you're stuck with the same specs it came with so the thoughts on upgrading was never in my mind.
now that you say that i can upgrade my unit brings all signs of relief! can you explain what i need to buy for my laptop? i live in the philippines so i have to look locally for the parts...

Of course price is everything but no matter what you upgrade.....everything else is still 2 years old and Murphy's Law is ever more important.

If you have money to burn then you'd be getting something newer than a GT780 in the 1st place?

The motherboard and screen are the parts to worry about if investing into an old model.

As is and out of warranty it's worth around $500 at best.

Stupid question but whenever I update a driver (like the 200mb+ file from every nvidia update), does the old copy of the driver get deleted automatically or is there gigabytes of old drivers stashed on my hard drive?

It should get updated automatically :)

Although you may find the extracted setup files in C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\, but they shouldn't take much space. ( You are free to delete those after setup)

The thing is that a rule of thumb is that a CPU can last about 2 propper GPU generations and still provide a non limited gameplay experience, so replacing a card is still cheaper than getting the new card and selling your old system while providing the vast majority of the gaming performance.
