You would get better performance from a 7970M but the newer nvidia cards have been known to not work, can you link the posts you have read?

http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/584869-official-msi-gt780-gt783-owners-lounge-873.html #8724 and #8725 refer to the 700 series working in a gt780dxr and a gt60 there are other forums where it is stated people have gotten them to work but very little details on how. There are a few post here Upgrading a GT780DX-277US (MS-1761) to a GTX780M that says the 770m will work an a 1761 model witch is same as my gt780dx. But if u say the 7970 will work ill look into it as well tyvm for the suggestion. Is there any info u could link on it working and the steps they had to go thru to do so?

Best of luck with that 770. I hated being one of the first to try things and not having them work.
For anyone looking for a 7970 and heatsink I got both for sale in the FS section.

If you add the price you can get for an MSI GT780DX/GT783 that's in very good condition and the cost of the GPU/Heatsink upgrade + shipping you probably are near the cost of a new GX70 and with a few hundred added you can be in the ballpark for a barebones MS-1763.

I am new at upgrading notebooks, i own a GT780 DXR (MS-1761) after reading many posts compare 770m to 7970m most feed back and data shows 7970m is a better choice. To upgrade to a 7970m I knew (thanks to the info from this place) I have to get a mod heat sink. When I shop around for a 7970m card i have realize that some 7970m card look different. So please help me to clear a few mysteries:

    1. Does it matter as long as the card is a MXM 3.0 typeB 7970m for my GT780 DXR?
2: What type of heat sink I am looking for? (I see some MSI 16F3 7970m heat sink in my area, will it work for my GT780 DXR?)
    3. What bios and driver will I need to get? How to install them?
4: Should I better off getting a 770m because i do not need a new heat sink. (let say both card cost around the same)

Thanks very much for your time =)

Hey everyone, I've had the GT780DX 17.3" notebook from MSI since Dec, 2011! I've enjoyed it, but I'm running into an issue. My CPU cores lately have been rising to extreme temps (90C+). I noticed if I take out the battery and pop it back in (I think I learned somewhere this is called resetting the embedded controller...but correct me if I'm wrong??) it fixes the temps and brings them back down to around 50C. When my temps are extremely high, the fans run really high and obviously make a loud noise...and runs down my FPS ridiculously low. But I noticed that when I take out the battery and pop it back in, it works like brand new! And when I shut it down, and start it without doing the battery pop out pop in...it resumes high temps. Any ideas? Do I need to update my BIOS?

Also, someone mentioned putting in a 770m into the GT780DX...this is something I'd like to do as well, can it be done?? I want to be able to play Arkham Origins or Watchdogs flawlessly, for example!

    Thank you,
    Mason

Have you cleaned the fan and exhhaust fins recently.

Have you repasted the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU since you received the notebook?

Any clean installs of Windows done?

I actually just sprayed compressed air into it...I did have it repasted not too long ago.

However, after it was repasted...some time after that I sent it for warranty repair (the screen bezel separated from display) so I backed everything up and wiped the laptop, sent it in as an RMA, they returned it, and out of the box it worked brand new like nothing ever happened. Now a month later, it seems that the temps on the CPU run high all the time. Its just weird how removing the battery and putting it back in, resets it, down to 50C from 90C and it works perfectly until I shut it down.

Spaying air into the vents blows the dirt back into the notebook. The bottom should be opened and fan removeved then the vents should be blown from the inside. While it's open the fan can be cleaned with a small brush.

    Hello everyone,

I have a msi gt780dx and now I'm having some issues with the keyboard/mouse.

It seems like the X key is pressed and the mouse wheel is rolling up by itself. It happens only after some time its on, sometimes it returns to normal for a few minutes and gets back again...

It's driving me crazy because I can't do nothing anymore with the notebook...

    Did anyone experienced similar issue?
I tried disabling the keyboard but I can't, well not at the win7 device manager anyway...

    Any suggestions?

    I got mine from GentechPC

The card uses 2 antennas so you might want to wait for 3 antenna cards from Intel or Killer.

Performance will depend on which AC router you're using, line of sight or not and service provider.

I'm disappointed in my readyshare network transfer speeds from and to USB attached storage.

Using TeraCopy I don't get more than 8 MB/s copying files from the GT780DX desktop.

Was considering this card with the Asus RT-AC66U, I am about 10 meters away through 2 walls.

I currently have a 6235 wireless card with Asus RT-N66U and normally get 10-12 on a copy from my NAS. I was hoping that the beam forming part of the AC spec might help speed things up a touch.

@ RobHunt,do you get better speed from the NAS to the notebook or from the notebook to the NAS?

    How is the NAS attached?

'm typing this for the second time after a freeze up caused by the NVIDIA 326.58 driver I was testing out.I've now reverted back to 314.22 that is the last trouble free driver for my GT780DX.

    I don't have a NAS,only attached USB devices on the R6300 router's USB 2.0 ports.

I'll probably replace the R6300 with a router with a newer chip when there's more choices.

The D-Link DIR-868L has the new second-generation Broadcom BCM4708X chip.
D-Link DIR-868L Wireless AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router Reviewed - SmallNetBuilder

The normal position for the notebook is in the living room,15' and 2 cement wall away from the router.

Performance is different in the living room compared to a line of sight location 8" from the router.

Downloading from the Internet and file transfers using readyshare are mostly at a steady 866.7Mbps and 5 green bars in Windows Network Monitor when in line of site but are fluctuating between 390Mbps and 702Mbps while in the living room.

I'm using Intel Wireless ProSet driver v16.1.1.3 for the AC-7260 wireless card.

    EDIT:Asuswrt-Merlin 3.0.0.4.372.32 Beta 3 available

all i know is don't buy the R6250 expecting USB3 speeds

i've talked with the engineers at netgear and they told me the port will never work at usb 3 speeds even though it's labeled as such.

the cpu is just not strong enough to allow for the speeds required and i believe them. at best it can do usb 2 speeds.

The USB 2.0 ports on the R6300 are a bit weird when USB 3.0 devices are plugged into the USB 2.0 ports.

Some are recognized while others aren't.

A pair of 16GB SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 flash drives are both seen and work well but 2 different 64GB SanDisk Extreme flash drives are undetected by the router.Same drives, only different capacity.

Hard drives and SSDs inside the 2 USB 3.0 enclosures I have all work.

No combination of hardware or locations in my apartment allows transfers over 8GB/s using readyshare USB storage.

i think the usb 3 ports on the R6250 must be meant for compatibility and to sell some units lol, but usb2 would have been better imho.

perso if they come out with an R6400 with true usb 3 they'll have to get a better cpu or unthrottle the power on the ones in the R6250-6300 series

The speed from the NAS to the Notebook and Notebook to the NAS seem to generally hover between 10-12 all the time. The NAS (Synology DS211) is wired to the router. I have 45Mbit cable internet service and I normally max that out when doing internet downloads. My notebook is normally in the same place all the time. I did find that playing with the placement/direction of the router and the antennas made a difference. I use inSSIDer to gauge the signal strength.

I have heard that using the ports on the router are usually a limiting factor as they just do not have the power for demanding tasks. I am no expert on this but I believe this to be true for at least my router (Asus RT-N66U).

I am using the latest Windows 7 X64 driver for the 6235, whichever one the online intel advisor tells me to grab.

    Greetings from South Africa

I'm new to the forum as you can see. I also have the MSI GT780. Looking into possible upgrades.

Currently running 2 x 500GB in RAID0 and the GTX 570m 3GB, these are the first parts I want to upgrade. Looking at sourcing a 7970m, maybe someone can point me in the right direction, these forums are HUGE for a noob like me. Want to get my post count up, so I can at least send a PM :(

Guys, I've just bought the infamous Logitech Z5500 and I want to use them to their fullest potential, so I'm thinking now:
Since the green stereo jack on my GT780DX-277US is also an SPDIF out, what should I do in order to get a digital audio connection between my laptop and the speakers?
Right now, if I plug the OGB (orange-green-black) cable into the first three jacks, I'm getting an analog 6-channel connection and when I play a movie with multichannel audio on WMP there's only the ambient sound... And if I go to windows' setting and configure speakers to Stereo, the movie's audio normalizes and there are all the sounds (voices, main and ambient), so it's not the video file's fault.
Is there any sort of converter/adapter for a digital cable I should get and use in order to fix this problem?
    Thanks in advance!

Recently I did a clean Windows 7 x64 HP installation that I normally do every few months.

I try to keep post #4973 in this thread up to date but sometime I fall behind.

Here's an installed software screenshot from Control Panel>Programs and Features of software that works for me on my GT780DX.

You can check your version numbers compared to mine and update if it pleases you.

On another SSD I have successfully installed and activated Windows 8.1 Pro RTM

Okay I've looked and searched in the thread, but I have not quite be able to solve the issues I've been having...

First of all this is the laptop I have, bought it almost 2 years ago...

    MSI 780R 408NE
    Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.2GHz
    NVIDIA GTX 560M

So the other day I decided to do a clean install on my laptop, I downloaded Windows 7 Prof (which I get for free from my University) and I deleted all the existing partitions (including the recovery part).

When pressing the P1-button Turbo Boost is supposed to start (which should increase the freq of the cpu), but now it does not seem to work.

I know there is software for MSI NVIDIA Overclock, but that isn't that for the GPU? Is there some other software that I am missing, to be able to turn the boost on/off.

First off if you're on battery power it doesn't work.

The NVIDIA OC Tool needs to be installed.
    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-0...y&os=Win7 64

On AC Power with the OC Tool installed there's a slight overclock when the P1 button is pressed.

To overclock your graphic card you'll need to use MSI Afterburner while P1 is engaged and then saved.
    MSI Afterburner

Then when the P1 button is off the system will return to normal stock clocks.

The P1 button does not have effect on the CPU or overclock it.

    It's for the GPU.

Okej, so with the OC Tool installed, when pressing the P1, I should get a small overclock for the CPU or was that also for the GPU? Or did I misunderstand you?

According to the review below I should be able to overclock my processor somehow. In the review they use a 2.0GHz CPU and can boos it to 2.9 GHz, and I think I've read somehwere that my 2.2GHz should be end up at around 3.1GHz if I am not mistaken... In the review they speak about some Turbo mode, I assume they mean when the P1 button is on, or am I wrong?
    Review MSI GT780R Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

Also, I tried running the laptop on the battery only and, according to Intel Turbo boost monitor, the CPU was still working at frequencies far above 2.2 GHz, should it be like that for a 2.2GHz CPU?

NVOC is strictly for overclocking the gpu. it doesn't have any effect on the cpu.
As for the cpu overclock, that's just a boost thing intel does with its driver(?).
You should make sure you have all the compatible drivers from the msi web site.
I think the driver is called intel_tbm2_nb.zip but i have a feeling it just monitors it (displays it,) but get it anyway.
I'm not 100% sure on this but intel cpu's just oc themselves (not a manual oc which is also doable but this actually require more work and huge risk.)
again, get all the appropriate drivers from the msi web site for things to work correctly, e.g. backlit keyboard/subwoofer/usb3 etc.

You do not need any extra devices. plz don't waste money!
I currently use the lesser z506 with analog connection and it's working perfectly.

make sure your analog is going 6 ch by mousing over the plugs on the right side of the realtek audio manager.
also test the speakers by clicking on the picture. (i assume you have done this?)
when moused over you should see (over green - front speaker out, over pink - senter/subwoofer speaker out, over blue - rear speaker out.)
I actually use black for front speakers and it says "side speaker out" but that's not important.

if you're going pure digital, spdif works but it'll "passthrough" dts/dolby only. this includes almost all dvd's so that shouldn't matter. it might be possible you have to enable passthrough on the wmp. i don't personally use any native software so i'm not sure :(

also utilize the thx trustudio pro that came with the comp, it helps with speaker fill and little tweaks for stereo inputs.
it's possible that you haven't enabled the speakers from that software. open thx thingy, click on the up side down triangle, goto settings, make sure to select external speakers and set crossover frequency to your liking. i set mine at 90hz for giggles.

digital cable wise, you will most likely need something that looks like this
Amazon.com: StarTech.com THINTOSMIN6 6 feet Toslink to Mini Digital Optical SPDIF Audio Cable: Electronics

Have you tried disassembling the keyboard and mouse?
there are some vids on youtube that shows the entire disassembly process for gt780s.
keyboard is super easy. 2 screws on bottom then pluck off cover on top by power button then 4-5 screws.
if under warrantee, just call msi for rma.

considering if the prob repeats on ubuntu, it's highly unlikely that it's a driver issue.
at the least check and or reset the setting on the bios in case you changed device recognition stuff.

    Hi guys,

I was playing League of Legends last night and the bloody steelseries' crappy keyboard didn't register a bunch of the key strokes, which resulted in me rage palming it, which resulted in HDD not working anymore. SDD is perfectly fine, but now I'd need another Black Scorpio, Any ideas where should I get one, preferably with the MSi thingy (recovery partition). I live in Denmark now.

Thanks a lot for your reply and advice! I already have order this cable, I tried the THX studio software, but it only kills the bass and I also noted that the subwoofer sound level is no adjustable in the Speaker section. When I turned THX off the sound became normal again...

Have you tried ebay? Be aware that the screen is made up of 2 pieces of plastic, rear panel and front bezel. Also the plastic covering the hinges is the power button board.
