If you remove the heatsink from the graphics card the thermal pads will most likely need to be changed.

I redo my thermal paste about every 6 months but unless you remove the heatsinks a quality TC properly applied should be good for a lot longer.

I always have speed stepping disabled

If the chips are getting too warm while under gaming load the fan app can be used adjust the fan speed for better cooling

I can't believe Gentech still didn't fix the download from their forum.

Try this link for the fan control app.

Hmm, I am definitely having some temp problems as well. Gonna get some thermal paste tomorrow and try to apply it.

My CPU temps (Core #0 and "Package) are way hot core 0 at around 80 C under load, and "Package" at around 88-90 C under load... The core 1-3 are at 65-70, hmm.

TR5: if you really want to speed things up, go with SSD. it blasts raid speeds out the water without even breaking a sweat.

Samsung 840 evo is real nice and cheap too if you can't get the 840 pro.

But not too small, 256gb is just fine for a bunch of games and have room left over for other stuff

It's a sad situation that almost all SSD reviews on the Internet are on empty drives.I don't think anyone buys an SSD to keep it empty of data. Most consumer SSDs are used as primary boot drives with varying amounts of data on them.

SSDs perform differently when used for a period of time and when data is already present on the drive. The purpose of the Drives with Data testing is to show how a drive performs in these 'dirty' states. SSDs also need time to recover, either with TRIM or on board garbage collection methods.

and don't even get me started on OCZ vertex 4 "feature" of slowing down after 75% full (previously 50%)

    lol

but with "Tom's Hardware Storage Bench" testing suite they do all kinds of tests, its not just crystaldiskmark and the like. that's fine for us common folk, but they test much more comprehensively.

They actually do write the drive full and wipe it and write it again and again to test how well the GBC and trim work while full.

oh and TR5, here's a lil something to help you decide on your next SSD that goes with your budget : Best SSDs For The Money: May 2014

and a comprehensive test of the Samsung 840 EVO i mentioned above: Samsung 840 EVO mSATA - SSD Review - Tom's Hardware

you don't have to buy it, its just a suggestion of course.

    Hey guys! How's it going?

I have upgraded my GT780R from GTX560M to a GTX770M and now have a weird CPU problem while gaming.

When I plan whatever game, I have sudden FPS drops that last for a few seconds. I have tried to disable Turbo Boos with Throttlestop (then the CPU stays at 2.0Ghz) and the FPS drops are gone.

The thing is that with the 560M I didn't have any kind of problem with FPS drops while TurboBoost was on, so why am I getting them now with the 770M?

Any kind of help or advice would be much apreciated.

    Best regards,
    Chris.

Did you checked your temps while turboboost is on? Maybe CPU is overheating while on turbo and its underclocking itself to reduce the heat and thats why you get dropdowns.

    Cheers!

    hi gacu,

When turboboost is on the FPS drops occur. I've checked the temps and they're quite good! (under 80º)

With raid arrays using 2 consumer grade hard drives there's a good chance of losing all your data.

Two drives in raid0 = 2x the likelihood of something going wrong

Yes,almost everyone should try a raid array once then save up there cash to get a good performing SSD.

One with a 5 year warranty is even better.

when i bought my laptop it came configured as raid. the booting with raid was faster than single drive but i never liked the risk of loosing all my files. its too risky imho.

but once i tried my 1st ssd, hehe, i never looked back ! lol

i do have 1 single hdd in my optical bay but i only use it for backups of my SSD. i know the ssd won't fail me any time soon but i'm cautious that way. the other 500hdd that came with it is in a usb caddy as an external drive.

all in all, i don't miss the constant whirling, grinding and clicking of the hard discs. i very much like the quietness of the ssd and lets face it, windows is notorious for making the hdd work long and hard.

i just bought an el cheapo acer aspire for work, i swapped its hdd with an old crucial m4 128gb, lol, its night and day !

anyhoo, good luck TR5, and back it up often bro !

There is no problem with raid really as any important data should be backed up daily to an external source since many things can happen to a notebook.

Feeling safe just because you have a single drive instead of raid is a false feeling of safety.

Well I must be very unlucky with raid0 arrays because every array I created using 2 consumer grade spinners broke in under 3 months of use.

On the flip side raid0 arrays I created using 2 same make, model and size SSDs lasted until i broke the array in the Intel Raid Utility.

    I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law.

    Naturally,your mileage may vary.

I have only very rarely had any hdd fail on me but I am picky about which ones I have bought. Raid won't reduce the lifespan of the drive so yes having a failure every 3 months is unlucky.

I have a GT783 R with a bad video card. It is doing the characteristic play game for 10ish minutes, then gpu goes to high 90s and it powers down and then back on. I have disassembled and cleaned and applied arctic silver 5 to the cpu and gpu. Running prime 95 I have no issues, running furmark causes the crash.

I just got an email back from MSI that the original 580m video card is no longer available. Is there an alternate card that will work? If so, can you post a link to the source? Is the 580m actually made by MSI or someone else that may still have stock?

I'm pretty unhappy that such an achilles heel part is not available. My laptop is basically a netbook without it.

Thanks for the help. If this has already been answered, point me in that direction please. I did search and read several posts about the video card, but nothing answered my questions.

Hi and welcome, you're the buyer and you need to find the shipping weight ? Usually the seller will tell you the weight and how much it will cost to ship to your country.

But you can find all the specs and weight of the computer at the link below
ps: it's 3.9kg the power brick is pretty heavy too, i'd say a solid 2 kg

Thank you very much. It's my father who will ship it and he is already fed up already of what he needs to do even without calculating weight. Pretty heavy combo. I hope it's worth it.

By the way, any of you overclocked monitor? I am to do this up to 72Hz if possible. Would feel better if someone has already done this with this exact display .

I guess the only difference is that GT783 was sold with GTX580M only and GT780 with 570M and 560M.

hi i just saw your post looking for a GT783R GTX 580m video card. have you found one yet? i may be parting out my GT783R. mine only had the left hinge problem which i am waiting for a reply from msi on the replacement parts. if the parts are unavailable i may part it out. have had no problems with the laptop other than this issue. all parts are in great shape the laptop was only used as desktop replacement not used for gaming.

    Hey all,

So having a few issues with my MSI GT780,

Ive had it since about 2011 loved it and is the best laptop I have ever had!

I have been able to play all games on reasonably high quality Witcher 2, Guild Wars 2, Wildstar, Call of Duty just to name a few....

But now I have just got the game Watch Dogs and it works fine but once I do anything other than walking it lag spikes big time and I have to close the game...

Is this because my settings cannot run it or just the game itself? Do I need to get a new graphics card or processor? Can this even be possible to swap out a card or CPU with a laptop?

Just trying to figure out the issue as I love the Laptop and if I need to upgrade components happy to do so just need to know where to start...

(I know a little about computers but not an I.T guru)

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

    Processor: Intel i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz
    RAM: 16GB
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 560M

(any other specs you need just tell me and where i can find them from)

@Jarvie, 560M is far from being a decent card but at first I would suggest you to update graphics card to the latest WHQL or BETA (340.43)

    Hi James D

My driver has been updated its currently at Version 337.88 last updated yesterday.

So can I buy a new graphics card and swap it out with my current GTX 560M? or it cant be done?

If it can what should I get and will my processor etc be able to handle it/ do I need upgrading elsewhere?

    THANKS!!

You can put in a GTX770M but it will require a heatsink from a GT780DX GTX570M or one of the new type heatsinks used in the newer models

The GTX560M heatsinK will not fit.

It would also require a modded INF to be put into the NVIDIA driver.

The modded INF can be downloaded from laptopvideo2go.com

    Thanks WhatsThePoint!

So I can just buy both heatsink and card from my local pc place? How much am I looking at?

Will this also need me to adjust my CPU or anything to accommodate? Or its just a straight forward take out of the 560 and put in 770 with heatsink and apply modd INF?

And lastly this will allow me to play newer games coming out over the next few years? like Assassins Creed, Batman, Witcher 3 etc?

    thanks

The hinge threaded metal anchors embedded in the plastic lid on the left side of my 32 month old GT780DX top cover broke out of the plastic today while opening the lid.

While I search for a replacement lid I'm trying a hard epoxy to secure the metal anchors to the lid

Here's the left side with epoxy and unbroken right side for comparison

sorry to hear that WTP, same thing happened to me back in january. only the tape inside held it in place lol

The hinges are the worst on these machines. You'd think for a 1700$ msi would take good care of us customers and put quality parts.

i would put teflon washer in them to make them swivel easily and avoid this problem, then use a screw at the end to tighten or loosen it.

my question is, do you think removing one of the metal rings on the hinge shaft is possible and how ?

i'm thinking of redoing the thermal compound for gpu/cpu , i bet it's turned to dust by now.

i haven't started yet but i'm wondering if Arctic Cooling MX-4 is good enough ?

Which thermal pads recommend please ?

i'm looking to buy a new fan from ebay, just wondering if this could work New Original CPU Cooling Fan for HP 2000 Series 2000 2xx 647316 001 | eBay

its for an HP laptop but it looks the same. idk the dimensions but if it fits, why pay 45-70$ for just a fan eh ?

Any reasonable pads will do, mx-4 is decent and easy to use. IC diamond is harder to get right but works better when done properly.

    Hinge repair completed

OK,I let the epoxy set for 48 hrs and then put the top lid back together.

I opened and closed it gingerly 10 times and all was good.

I called AIG,my 3rd year 3rd party notebook insurance company to see if I can get it properly repaired by MSI before I move from Korea on July 9th.

They'll let me know on Monday what I need to do.

A new top cover lid is $130

Wow,that's a very good price.I wish I could read the bar code numbers so I could confirm a match to my GT780DX cover

About 1 week and $6 to ship it to Seoul.

I think I'll wait till I get to the states if MSI can't do the job before I leave. It took them 3 weeks to replace my bad parts a few months ago after waiting for the AIG approval for a week.

When I had the cover off and apart and the touch bar removed I noticed that one of the screws holding the left hinge to the bottom half next to the left speaker was missing and the other was loose.

I never touched the hinge screws so I guess the factory forgot to put the second one in.The unbroken right side has the proper 2 screws holding the hinge next to the right side speaker.

Ask Sally at the site, she works for Waresphere and is very quick to respond, we've chatted 2 times today, very helpful girl. She may be able to help you with the bar code.

i just ordered an msi fan from them, 25$ is cheap compared to the thieves on ebay selling between 50 to 70$ for just a fan. Going by the original fan of my machine , in my humble opinion it's not even worth 25$ if its the same cheaply made fan, idk what type it is but by the sounds it's one with fluid bearings with dried up fluid. if that's the case then the lube dries up way too quickly for my tastes. i think that was the problem all along in mine as i've heard nothing but a soft metalic noise like the whir of bearings grinding on each other coming from the fan, its a very distinctive noise and not at all pleasant to the ear.

i was tempted by an HP fan but figured i'd give this one a chance, if the fan is genuine and also does that noise, well my money's going to hp next time. i'm all for genuine msi parts but gotta draw the line somewhere when you feel being taken for a ride.

i'll let you know when it arrives

Who has tried windows 8.1 on our GT780s ?

i bought an Acer Aspire E1 a couple weeks ago, nothing fancy just a 15" with a Core i5 with 8gigs, no vidcard for gaming tho. it's quite nice and very quiet lol

it came with Windows 8.1 and with Start8 from stardock it's a good improvement over windows 7,

i'd even go so far as to say win7sp2 lol.

it's the same but with added tiles (i hated them at first too and i don't use them that much but still nice to have) , has better copying/replacement window and added back the explorer toolbar with useful functions (we lost that after xp).

i also like the "instant on" feature for fast booting, it's like a deeper state of sleep for your puter. it may use a lil bit of power and may lead to premature hardware failure compared to not having it on,but by how much ? it's anyone's guess.

Now to why i posted here, i'm thinking of installing 8.1 on my GT780DXR but would the win7 key work or would M$ give me an upgrade key for free ?

they had that going a few years back for vista to 7 and 7 to 8, idk if it would be possible now.

    Hey guys. One question.
Do you have any problem with sbar regarding brightness ? I have latest sbar intalled, and i can't make birghtness control work with latest amd drivers ( 14.6 beta for watchdog ).
I'm always at minimum birghtness, and have to change it with ccc, wich is totally crappy.

Do you know if we can control brightness without having to use sbar ?

This might be a proble because you have beta amd drivers. I had similar problem with nvidia beta drivers they werent tagged as WHQL and that was a problem. Try different drivers and check if this solves problem.

I didn't managed to find other brightness control than in windows settings which was locked and i couldn't change it.
    Cheers!

@gacu : it's not a problem of whql/beta, actually i never ever used whql drivers, and never had this problem

@james : ty for the link, but regarding this video, it's mainly a problem with enduro and apu. Moreover this registry key doesn't exist in W7, only in W8 ( wich i don't use ).

    I'll keep digging !

@edryr: Windows Hardware Quality Labs testing or WHQL means the drivers were tested by Microsoft to comply with the actual OS and hardware for certification. meaning they are out of Beta. Beta means we're doing the testing ourselves.

so if your drivers are beta switch to whql ones and see if that helps.

otherwise can you use the fn+arrow keys for brightness on your keyboard ?

Ty, but i knew what whql actually means, no offence.

It works with previous 14.4 beta drivers. But with those 14.6, sbar crashes, and fn + arrow keys doesn't work either.
    Still diggin.

ah, well i'd say stick with what works. the idea being that if it ain't broke...

We like to get the latest and greatest drivers but after a while you gotta ask yourself why update if it just works ?

i just reinstalled windows on mine and the only update i installed was the wifi and video. and wifi was simply cuz windows didn't recog the device.

i'll probably update intel mei/rst eventually, but for now it boots great and no hiccups except fro the s-bar. i need to check what's on the MSI site

Should be a nice step up especially in multi threaded apps.

That's what i generally do. But in this case, 14.6 beta are a bug improvment for watchdogs, so i really need them.

Anyway, i managed to lock brightness at 100% instead of 30% ( don't really know how, went in registry and changed some keys ), so even if i'm stuck at 100% it's still better. and volume control with fn + arrow keys works fine now without sbar.
I'll wait for others drivers and keep to this for the time being.

Well there is not much further you can go in single core speed after this since no cpu can be overclocked in the machine.
