Nah, either buy cheap HDD for 50$ (or less on any newegg sale) or SSD for 170$. Hybrid HDD is obsolete with current prices on SSDs.

    Make photo of broken part.

Turns out my friend had an extra HDD since he bought a laptop and immediately replaced it with an SSD.

Here is an album of the issue, as well as what the laptop should look like without the issue:

Should I just use an adhesive on this?

Trying adhesive is better than doing nothing I suppose. Might be a temporary fix. I would suggest at some point to reach out to either the place you purchased it (if through a reseller) or MSI's customer service to see if you can get a replacement part. You don't want it to get worse.

Most likely MSI will ask you to send it in under a RMA, they don't really send parts out unless approved by a supervisor.

You need to fix this ASAP or it gets worse.
If you have soldering iron and superglue then start disassembling laptop.
After you took out LCD part with hinges you need to take out front plastic case (which costs ~70$ if you don't fix it), unscrew hinge and press yellow metal star back on its place with soldering iron. You may put plastic crumbs inside and then press. Then screw in one screw to close the hole, drop baking soda on it (slightly cover) and around in THIN layer and drop super glue (ciano-crilate) one drop by one. It's better than epoxide. Try it on something else first before laptop.
You may use epoxide instead of my method if you want.

No time to post my pictures now. This I googled and edited

Has anyone tried Windows 10 on our computer?

I wonder if there will be any issues with drivers.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Guys,

    Here is my story:
I was tired with crappy sentelic, it often blocks input so I must needed to reboot PC. Beside I had lag (even up to 2 minutes with my SSD! ) on windows loading. I suppose that was the sentelic initialization problem. With my new synaptics touchpad, all works flawlessly.

So I've made modification based on @db8ek work.
It's the same modification to db8ek's work but is no cutting of PCB, only rewiring connector pins. Ground must be soldered to the appropriate pin (don't connect to ps/2 data).

So, thank you db8ek for your investigations.

My GT780DX left hinge broke loose over 18 months ago.

I salvaged as many pieces of the plastic top cover that held the metal inserts as I could find and used an epoxy to hold it back together so that the inserts lined up with the screws.I let the epoxy cure several days before screwing the hinges down tight.

The epoxy is still holding to this day but I don't open and close the lid very often now. After I shut down for the night I just cover the notebook with a homemade cover.

    I have 3 SSDs in the unit running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate,Windows 8.1 Pro x64 and Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10532.

I rarely use Windows 10;Windows 8.1 is my daily driver

This is still a great notebook that I have used about 12 hours + every day since buying it in late 2011

    Original SteelSeries Backlit Keyboard
    Original Synaptics pad

Hey guys, i have (obviously) GT780R with 180W power supply. As i have read, i can upgrade my laptop GPU to GTX 970M. The one from GT72 Upgrade Kit is good? And the heatpipe? I'll have to modify vBIOS even if it's MSI version and not Clevo? Also i have i5-2430M that will bottleneck it, so i'll upgrade to i7-2630QM or something.

I would say the one from MSI upgrade kit is the best, because it's full plug and play. No need to mod drivers or anything.
For the heatpipe, buy a 780m one and grind it a bit. Much better than getting a 570m/580m one. And for your cpu yes, upgrade it to at least 2670QM. Best would be 2760qm/2860qm.

I have one question : since i upgraded to W10, everything is fine. Only troubles on 2 things.

First one is i lost double touch/scrolling on the touchpad. Really annoying. Do you know if there is a synaptic driver working for our baby with W10 ?

Second one is a little bit more complex. I had a BCLK up at 106mhz under windows 7 100% stable.
Since i upgraded to W10, bclk is stuck at 100mhz. Even if i change it in XTU, nothing happens, it's not taken. I flashed my bios with a full unlocked one and tried to change my bclk through it, and now if i don't have full stock settings, windows 10 won't even boot. I tried to test it on windows 7, and no problem, it can go up back to 106mhz.
Do you know how i could fix it ? Would be much appreciated, as i alreayd lost cpu performances with windows 10 ( went from 8400 physics score on W7 to 7100 in windows 10... ), and i lost some valuable fps on cpu demanding games.

Thanks for the info, i think ill have problem with the heatink for 780M.
For the touchpad driver, when i first upgraded from 7 Home Premium to 10 Home i have got a lot of comatibility issues and system was not stable, so i made bootable USB with Windows 10 Home and installed it clean on new and onliest partition, after first dekstop boot Windows found all drivers expect the SD Reader and Realtek Audio (im using SD reader driver from MSI site for Windows 8 now). ATM im using "Finger Sensing Pad" driver found by Windows dated to 27.04.2015

tl;dr U should make bootable USB with Windows 10 and do format. Then download Windows 8 SD Reader and Realtek Audio drivers from MSI site and u are ready to go (i don't know for you, but in my case default driver for GTX 560M found by Windows 10 was from 22.07.2015 so i replaced it with one from NVIDIA site.)

PS Sorry for my English, but it's not my primary language :p

I just took the plunge this weekend and upgraded to Windows 10 on my GT780R with Clevo GTX 970M. Shocking not only did it work, but it FIXED all of the challenging parts of having a non-MSI GPU! I am now once again able to control screen brightness, and even more impressively, I can install Nvidia drivers straight, with no modded INF! Hopefully this holds up over time, but it's great not needing to hack drivers and jump through the hoops of disabling Digital Driver Signatures every time (and still having the driver install fail). The only part that is weird now is that 3dmark is absolutely horrible, but the 970M still runs all of my games fine. I chalk that up as a 3dmark problem.

I'll have to try the touchpad when I get home to see if I have the same issue as @edryr. I've always hated the touchpad on the laptop in general, so I might not have considered it a "new" issue...

I upgraded to the 970M before the MSI upgrade kits were available and it worked fine. If you can get the GT72 upgrade kit and don't mind spending the bit more for it, then go for it. Having MSI vBIOS is surely a better thing to have. I'm still nervous about actually changing my vBIOS to MSI's.

As for CPU upgrades, @edryr is right. If you get find one, go for a 2860qm, followed by a 2760qm, then 2670qm. I've still got the stock 2630qm and have considered upgrading it, but at a certain point I think I've already thrown enough good money after bad and should just save up for a new rig (unless I can get the CPU cheap).

    Hi guys, quick question:
Can you upgrade the CPU in a GT 780 DXR from a 2430M to a 2760QM in this laptop? (GPU is 570M, 17 inch model).
    Kind Regards,
    Cats Paw.

Has anyone ever gotten a BSOD with "Your BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant..."? At least once?
Or did somebody have a "Disk Error, pres Ctrl+Alt+Del" but if you press F11 and choose your drive then everything is good?

I remember seeing this symptom from someone's NB before a long ago, and not sure what was the solution for the issue.
What's your current BIOS/EC version? And have you tried updating them to the latest version?

For me the solution of BSOD is to load BIOS defaults and problem happens any time it fully power drains/clears NVRAM.
First happened after flashing unlocked BIOS by Xonar. BIOS is long time in general access and is latest so wanted to make sure it's not my personal problem.

I haven't had a BSOD in a very long time.

I've had only one or two maybe in the entire 4 years I've had a GT780DX

There hasn't been any bios or firmware update for this forgotten model in a very long time.

    I don't have an ODD;I have 3 SSDs
The display and keyboard are the originals but the mainboard, graphics card and ram were replaced about 18 months ago

The original Realtek wireless card was replaced the day I got the notebook>1102>6300>1103>AC-7260

I already just made another mod myself based on Xonar's bios for another stuff I wanted (updated microcodes, Intel RAID oROM) to save time. It was just one BSOD after. Since it's always risky to flash bios I rather take my time unless it becomes unbearable. Not so often I remove battery, you know.

Thank you all for taking your time answering my question.

P.S. I wish MSI would update GT780 BIOS. Fix bugs, add support of GPUs without driver mods etc.

Resolving a drive related BSOD or constant disk checking.

If you have more than one SSD/HDD in the notebook remove all but the primary at P0 on the SATA bus.Remove the ODD also if you have one.

Now boot to the P0 drive.

If OK move the SSD/HDD to the P1secondary SATA bay and boot.

If OK then repeat with a different drive that you may have had installed when you got the BSOD.

In my experience with the GT780DX the drive in the P1 SATA bay while there's a drive in the P0 SATA bay causes the most issues.

I've taken out the SATA connector(2 tiny screws) from SATA bay 2 a few times and cleaned the contact points on the SATA connector and motherboard to resolve a constant scanning of the disks for errors on every boot up.

    The cleaning resolves the issue

Hey there! Just discovered this web page and got a couple of questions! So I have a GX780 (Which I assume is the same GT780 because when ever I search GX780 that is all that shows up) I am wondering what gpu I can upgrade to (it has the stock GT 555M). Thanks in advance for any help!

As i have seen before on internet, your GPU is also on MXM (3.0b i think) slot so it is upgradeable. However, the problem is that your laptop AC Adapter is 120W while the regular GT780 is 150W (180W in my case, dunno why, i have version with i5-2430M). Maybe if u buy another AC Adapter like 180W it will resolve the problems with new GPU, but the power section might be too weak for it. Also, GT555 TDP is 30-35W while 560M/570M is 75W. I think u can upgrade to GTX 970M, but the TDP might be a problem. Last problem is, we don't know if your heatsink is same as in GT780 so this is going to be biggest problem. Maybe the modded from GTX 780M/GTX 580M will be capable, but we don't know.

PS Sorry, but English is not my primary language :p

I'd say get a 180W PSU with the same tip, a 970M and the heatsink from the GT60/GT70 that shipped with the 970m.

GX780 may not going to utilize the extra wattage exceeding 150W because the power restriction is embedded in the EC firmware therefore your mileage varies.

My gt780dx has a fan problem. ever since I took the fan out to clean, and put the fan back in, the fans are in a constant on/off cycle. The fans begin at max speed for 4-5 seconds then turns off for 4-5 seconds, this happens in both idle and when gaming. I tried replacing the fan, but the problem still persisted. Can this be fixed, or do I need to buy another laptop.
Searched everywhere and couldn't seem to find the solution for this problem.
    Thanks

The reason i ask is becasue a long time ago I saw somewhere written that you can use 8 stick of 8 GB with dual cores and 4 sticks of 4 gb with quads if you wanted 16 GB, so I was wondering if you can go 4X8 for 32 GB (I bought 4 sticks of 4 before upgrading to quad core and I could only use 2 of them).
Also, it can be 1600 MHZ right? I knot the CPU supports it, jsut not sure about the motehrboard in the laptop.

The 2760QM supports up to 32 GB of DDR3 1600, but whether the system will recognize that much or not is what I'm not 100% on. Even though the memory controller is integrated into the CPU, the BIOS and/or chipset can limit you.

So 32 GB might be feasible (8 GB x 4), but 16 GB for sure is doable.

Per MSI spec, it is 4GB x 4 slots = 16GB, but per Intel spec for the CPU, it is 32GB as Prostar mentioned. Most likely 32GB can work but keep in mind that they were not tested for compatibility nor guaranteed by MSI.

Would you guys say this is a reliable source?
I have windows 7 home premium so obviously im going to be limited by OS unless I upgrade to professional.

Also, My wireless internet stopped working.
It cant detect the network adapter. I tried the official driver and the one that came with the laptop, but so far nothing.

EDIT: The CPU is for 2 channels only so it seems 16 GB is max.... so... 32 GB would mean 16GB per stick (the CPU should support it, but Im assuming the Laptop itself wont).
Too much risk involved anyway. Im staying where I am.

Yep, people succeed with this. basically it's just put it, find/mod proper heatsink for GPU and maybe flash GPU to the MSI vBIOS if it still isn't.

I ran 32gb in mine for some time.
    Worked flawlessly with a 2760QM + Windows 7 ultimate.
    On 7 home premium, i tested 24gb ( 2x8 + 2x4 ) and worked perfectly also.

Yep, 980m also. And it's just awesome :)

Awesome. Can you share the memory brand/model that you use on the forum so if someone is interested later on then they can acquire this important info from you, thank you. :)

The memory belonged to pau1ow, i'll ask him.

It was 1600mhz memory for sure but don't remember the brand.

Are you listed in his Elite List to which he responds exclusively? L. My question about modded 570m vBIOS was successfully ignored for instance.
As to what RAM, my educated guess is that every branded RAM will work but yeah, I never tested 32GB myself.

You can use CPUZ or AIDA64 to find out the brand/model of memory, if you have time. :)

How did you get 24 GB to work on windows 7 home premium since the OS is limited to 16 GB? ( https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/li...=vs.85).aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_7).

In terms of prices, the 970m is really expensive, so for now ill wait on that. I was also checking and it seems that its hard to find laptop GPUs in Poland.
I was looking at a 770m but so far It seems a bit risky to buy something north of 450 dollars without confirming it will work (especially since I wont be able to return it).

The bios flash is on the GPU, not the motherboard correct? I mean, you can get abck to using your previous GPU is something goes wrong, right?

For windows home, i don't know. I just put 2x8 added to my 2x4, and it was recognized in system and hwinfo.

770m will work if it is a clevo card ( and only a clevo one ).
And yes, vbios is on the gpu, not motherboard.
