Hi,
I have a question for the GT780DX owners about the noise, how is it during idle or low GPU-stressful tasks? Can you watch a movie without earing the fans? The 570m doesn't increase too much the heat of the laptop?
I like to use my laptop on my... lap, can I do it even when during demanding GPU tasks without compromising my chance of reproduction??
-
I got my GT780DXR today. Still setting things up and will have to transfer a 250 gig steam folder overnight so not much gaming yet except some Starcraft 2 which unsurprisingly runs at 60fps with every setting maxed.
Something I noticed was that Afterburner or GPU-Z sensor monitor both report the core clock never going above 525MHz, but overclocking does seem to work since its affecting 3d mark scores (P2750 in 3dmark11 with some moderate overclocking. It was around 2450 stock.
The screen blows away my old Asus. Matte screens are so much better. Happy that the included hard drives were WD Black's - have had good results with those in my desktop. Also impressed that the wireless card was Intel and not some atheros crap. I had a slightly better intel card on hand so i swapped it anyway but it was still a nice surprise.
The free copy of Dirt 3 is funny because its "Compliments of AMD." I wonder if AMD knows they bought me a game when the laptop has no AMD CPU or GPU.
I have the 095US version since I didn't need blu-ray and had an extra 4gb on hand to upgrade it from 12gb to 16gb anyway.
First MSI laptop so the sound quality was a shock. I don't usually use the speakers but they sound good. My Beyerdynamic DT860 headphones sound pretty decent on it too. Not as good as with the amp on my desktop but pretty darn close. The THX Crystallizer helps a lot.
Impressed so far. Gaming time tomorrow. -
Why is it every time I place my order they release some new upgrade for this computer ha I'm starting to think I have bad timing ha
Since it's on pre-order still could it be possible to get the CPU upgrade thing? -
Placed my order for my new MSI GT780DXR with gentech over the weekend. One thing I was curious about (as I was dead set on getting an asus g74 before I saw this laptop) is the screen, is the screen of a similar quality to the g74? This is my only real concern. I also got the 215 version but with the 4x blu ray and 16gb of ram, I went this route because this model was offered with an extra 640 gb hard drive for free over the labor day weekend, which works better in my mind because all my games will be on the primary hard drive anyway.
I probably would've gotten an SSD if the prices weren't so ridiculous. I'll just wait on that.
I think the thing that tipped me over the edge from the g74 to the MSI was the audio system, I saw a comparison on youtube and was blown away.
So yeah, can anyone comment on the screen quality in direct relation to the (non- best buy version) Asus G74 screen? -
You could use the laptop on your lap but would highly recommend a lapdesk. The system has numerous vents on the bottom to supply proper ventilation. It would not be good to block these. I currently use the logitech N500
Logitech - Comfort Lapdesk N500
which you can pick-up at most Targets for $24.99 or less if on sale. When I do not want to hold the system I picked up a $15 laptop stand at Walgreen's that has multiple height and tilt. If you want to go all the way look at this laptop stand:
Lounge-tek: Lounge-Book Laptop-Table ..: Enjoy Computing :..
Still deciding if I will pull the trigger on this but at least it has the wife's approval. -
Thanks Fiche for the info, I didn't know about the lapdesk, looks way more confortable than the big book that I am using right know to avoid burns on my lap

just ordered my gt780dxr 095us from newegg today. should be here before the weekend since it's marked as shipped.
got someone at work interested in buying my old m17x r1 260m sli for $700 so that takes care of almost half the cost. if I can sell him my gen 1 iPad then I'll be better off. I wasn't gonna upgrade, but he came up and asked if I was selling anything and there you go. I alway give him interest free financing, lol.
cant wait to have a matte screen again. if only it was 16:10... -

Hi peoples!!! did you all miss me? i was too busy rocking out on my good ol' gt780r. seems that dxr is finally out now. how exciting and yes, i are jelly as well.
anywho, i was wondering if someone could help me with a minor issue i am having. i tried to update my BIOS to 30B (i'm currently running E1761IMS.300.) i was able to update my ec firmware fine but when i tried the 30B it said i had the wrong ROMID. Anyone having similar issues? I would really like the new BIOS since it says it changes boot order since my machine loves to try to boot from my external hdd's first for some odd reason and i have to unplug every time i reboot. thanks in advance.

I'm still saving up, so I can't complain

I wanted to follow-up and thank everyone for their assistance. I purchased a gt780dxr from gentechpc and had it delivered last Friday. Man is this machine amazing. I originally had a freezing problem with the ssd but once I updated the firmware the ocz vertex 3 is working perfectly. It is fast!
The other issue I had was the 2nd hard drive and no way to secure it. Well Ken pointed me to a youtube video showing how the rubber stop was to be used and everything fits snug and works great. Good ole rubber stop.
Anyway, the service from Ken over at Gentech was phenomental. He responded 7 or 8 times to my emails over the holiday weekend. Great customer service.
And then the gt780dxr. It is fast, quiet and works great. Thanks again MSI and Gentech.

is it safe to buy the msi gt780r-012us? even though they are discontinuing it?

should i go with the gt780r or the gt780dxr? will the 4 extra gb of memory make a difference? and will the non raid hd's with the dxr make a difference?

You will only need 8gb memory maximum unless you do a lot of high res video editing. Many people don't think raid 0 makes that much of a difference to a single HD, but SSDs will give you the most improvement. -
Personally, I would wait for the 2670QM CPU to replace the 2630QM, otherwise you might regret it in the long run.

You're very unlikely to notice an extra 200 MHz on a 3 GHz Sandy Bridge CPU. -

Hello~ but just a question here, if the MSI laptop's GPU happens to fail either 560m or 570m will the integrated GPU in the CPU kick in automatically? If not can it be done manually?

no, MSI does not support Optimus

Most of the gaming laptops does not have this feature enable on the mainboard.
So yes, if the nVidia GPU is broken it will not switch to Intel HD graphics. -

Some people paid a lot of money for that extra 200MHz when upgrading to the 2720QM.
Performance aside, a lot of enthusiasts want as much as they can get
This type of thing is personal preference I guess. -

Hello All,
I got my GT 780DXR from Gentech. Thanks to Ken for getting it checked before shipping. The laptop is amazing and to my surprise quiet. Well you can always hear it "ROAR" when you kick in extra cooling. I mean it literally makes sound like a small turbine. I replaced the primary drive with my Momentus XT and OS with Win 7 Ultimate OEM. I had few troubles with the touchpad. The cursor would jump over to places. I had the same cursor jumping when I booted to Ubuntu 10.04. In Windows I installed touchpad drivers and it seems to be fine. I had few driver issues in Linux especially with Intel 6230 and Realtek Audio drivers. Nvidia drivers run fine on Linux.
Apart from these I really like the laptop especially the screen. Colors are more vibrant than my old laptop. I know it's a personal choice but still.
Ken you have been great in providing information and replying back to all my emails. I have my eyes on 2860QM. It will be a significant upgrade over 2630 QM.
Cheers -
so i ordered my DXR and i'm interested in removing all the bloatware, do you guys suggest i just uninstall it all one by one? or go ahead and reformat?
the only thing that i don't like about reformating is I don't want to remove any special config/drivers or anything that would make the laptop not run as intended -

As for lap protectors: I had an issue with mine. My GPU was overheating, graphic tearing, eventually shutdown. After Ken mentioned it was likely heat, I looked at the surface of my lap protector. It is 1/4" or so of rubber similar to mouse pads. I looked at the bottom for air intakes and removed the rubber from the surface in the 4" from side to side about 1-2" down from the top (where the back of the laptop is). Now it is cool sailing. No graphic issues at all. So make sure that the intakes are not blocked with whatever your choice of lap protectors is.

what's a good quality affordable lapdesk out there for the dxr?

So I found out that when turbo drive isn't turned on, it permanently keeps the 570m at 525mhz (which is even below 575mhz default). I think I had uninstalled the app that allowed toggling of turbo drive but now everything is fine. I got P3400 in 3dmark 11 with the GPU at 700Mhz. After an hour of Crysis 2 overclocked the gpu temp never went above 69 C either which is nice.

Does anyone know where the actual .exe is located for toggling turbo drive? Or is it built into s-bar? -
Hello,
question of the day, on newegg the alimentation for the gt780dxr is noted as 150w but I read on this forum that it was supposed to be 180w. Is it a typo or their model has a weaker alimentation?
thks -
bendok said: ↑When turbo drive is disabled it won't let you overclock the card. No matter what you put into afterburner it will stay at 525mhz. It's not a huge deal really - I thought turbo drive did a small amount of overclocking on its own which is why I didn't enable it at first, I would rather specify my own clocks, but what it does is actually allow you to overclock period. I believe you need the s-bar and nvidia overclock tool installed for it to work - yes these do come installed on the laptop or can be downloaded from MSI.Click to expand...
