best way to update my bios for DXR clean install?

should i update my bios booting from a flash drive? or there seems to be an easier way of just downloading the files in windows and just executing them.

if the second option is that easy, is there any benefit to updating from the first option? the flash drive

    I have some questions:
    1. Does anyone has replaced the optical drive for a HDD?
    2. Is this HDD, SATA II or IDE?
    3. Can I use it as system disk?
    4. Can I boot the laptop from an external optical drive or flash drive, if I need to format the laptop?

It's safer to update BIOS using flash drive.

The optical drive SATA port is SATA II and yes you can use it as system disk.

You can boot from external optical drive or flash drive to format the laptop but won't be able to use it to boot to Windows.

Well I really want to be sure that if for some reason I need to re-install Windows from scratch, I can count with this external optical drive to do it. I mean, boot from the external optical drive with a Windows install DVD and use it to install my system

Here is the one I use as a suggestion:

    Logitech - Comfort Lapdesk N500

I picked mine up at Target for $24.99 though I have seen it on sale for less. Good luck with your search. :)

Copy the disk onto a bootable usb flash drive. I makes life a whole lot easier when installing windows. But, there should be no problem at all installing windows from an external usb optical drive.

It makes a difference doing a clean install of windows home premium? Or it wont make a difference from the stock version aside of the bloatware it has installed?

    Thanks,

Looks like there is definitely an improvement, but it seems to get similar scores to the 2830QM + GTX 570M. Even the 2630QM + 570M get some what close scores to that...

I have a few questions, but first I want to thank ken from GENTECH he was great i have never been treated so good when buying a product. Cant say the same about some seller that posts here who wouldnt let me do a pickup instead shipping unless I paid in cash even though he has a local store (go figure) anyway. I have been a mac user for quite sometime this is my first pc in 10 years so im trying to figure it out how it works so if my questions seems stupid remember I have been under that controlled mac environment for awhile.....ok here are my questions:

    (1) does anyone else having problems with their keyboard crackling? I first thought I was hearing things but even when im not typing some times I can hear the keyboard crackling its weird, also the bezel around the keyboard seems loose especially near the ESC key, sometimes I have to press on in to go back down and when I do I hear a click.

    (2) MSI NVIDIA Overclock how come when I click on it does not open, am i doing something wrong?

    (3) Raid-0 how does it work? what can I do to make the most out if it? i tried googling but the more i read the more confused i get. am I supposed to install the games in data (D :)? is it that simple?

    (4) MSI recovery, I made the recovery DVD, do I also need to make a windows recovery or those the Msi recovery covers everything?

    (5) How Do I check the temperature of the CPU and GPU

you guys here are awsome if it wasnt for this forum I would of never known about MSI and gentech I was very close to buying a HP

There is a plastic shield on the keyboard that is between the keys. Did you remove it? That will make a crackling noise.

    (2) MSI NVIDIA Overclock how come when I click on it does not open, am i doing something wrong?

That is normal operation. The tool is active when you press turbo.

    (3) Raid-0 how does it work? what can I do to make the most out if it? i tried googling but the more i read the more confused i get. am I supposed to install the games in data (D? is it that simple?

Raid 0 is already setup, you should make no changes. The data is striped across two drives in raid 0, the install and data are your two partitions on the disk(s).

    (4) MSI recovery, I made the recovery DVD, do I also need to make a windows recovery or those the Msi recovery covers everything?

There should be 3 msi recovery DVD's. The MSI recovery is only a backup of the factory install and not any of your programs or data. You can use windows recovery for incremental backups of your data.

    (5) How Do I check the temperature of the CPU and GPU

You can use hardware montior, that is one that is available.

Does anyone know when the 780DXR-095US is coming into stock at XOTICPC? I ordered mine August 1st and thats the last time i heard anything about it. It seems like people who ordered from other resellers are getting theirs already. Just wanna make sure I'm not getting ripped off.

I just recieved my laptop 15 min ago and have been playing around with it. The keyboard is fantastic and everything is working correctly! However, I want to reinstall Windows to get rid of all this crapware so I have a fresh base to start the gaming tests, which was one of the primary reasons for getting the laptop in the first place. I am an expert in reinstalling Windows but I have a few questions.

    1. I have been reading about SSDs ad there are specific things you have to do to maintain their health and speed. Are there any specific things I should do during reinstallation to maintain the SSD as it is? For example, when choosing partitions, should I delete the partitions so that I have one to work with or would I be better off just formatting the partition?

    2. I have never done a BIOS update before. Is it as simple as putting the update file on a flash drive and booting from it? Or is there something else I have to do?

    3. Which video driver should I use? There are three listed on this thread and I think I'll go with the latest official driver because I am uncomfortable using beta drivers. Although the latest driver does not list the 570m as being supported...

    4. For the rest of the drivers, will I need to download any of them in addition to the ones on the CD or are they all that I need? Are the utilities on the CD as well?

Thanks to Ken from GenTech for making sure my laptop was not DOA when it arrived and anyone who can help me!!

Found an issue that happens prior to the latest BIOS update.

When a hard drive is connected and you boot into windows, A lot of programs are missing and some settings were not applied(eg. Taskbar color). Seems like an issue of loading programs/registry from the HDD and not from C:\

I have to remove the hard drive and restart for everything to come back.

    Can somebody confirm?

    Hello,
just notice with afterbuner that by default the GTX570m is at 525/1050, pressing the Boost button put them at 575/1150. I thought that the last values where supposed to be the default value... Is the 570m underclocked by default?

yeah, it's expensive here in sweden, but it doesn't get that much cheaper to import sadly. As with the lowered price importing will only be around 300 usd cheaper at best. And with the same performance it get's more expensive.

Also it's the only DX version avilable to be purchased in sweden, cannot find any other store in EU that has it for some reason.

just got mine yesterday. the keyboard is on par with my old alienware as far as responsiveness and how hard i have to hit keys sometimes, but it is a bit squishier.

build quality... well it's hard to compare an aluminum chassis to a plastic one. on one hand, the gt780dxr is lighter, but on the other it seems i have to baby it a bit more. just putting it in the bag and i felt the back of the monitor squish. so there's a bit of something you're giving up by getting this instead of an alienware.

as far as the innards go, i agree with everyone else here- it's a beast! i've been playing rift a while today a was able to put it on ultra with out any stutter. i had to play with a considerable less quality with my 260m sli.

i thought the m17x r-1 speakers were nice - this blows them away! i can actually overpower the tv with these speakers, lol. i upset my daughter's spongebob session with my gaming.

for $1700, it's not a bad laptop. plus having a screen where i don't see myself is a big bonus. there is one thing, it seems i have grounding problem. there a little buzz that comes through intermittently. when i touch the laptop it stops. i lightly touched it to see if it was a vibration, but it stopped even with a pinky touch. it's not really loud and i can't hear it in a normal room, but in a quite room it creeps up sometimes.

other than that this should be a good laptop for the next two years!

Does the "boost" (I am guessing TDE) have any impact on the CPU, or only the GPU?

Is the TDE configurable, or are you better off using a separate program for GPU/CPU overclocking? If so, which do you recommend?

There has been a lot of talk about SSDs, mostly about reliability problems and the cost in relation to conventional drives.

I've read the warnings to stay away from OCZ Vertex but I am curious if anyone out there has tried an OCZ Agility 240GB? The performance and price seem good for this model.

    http://www.ocztechnology.com/res/manuals/OCZ_Agility3_Product_sheet (4).pdf

Tiger direct has it for $299 after rebate. -- About $1.25/GB
The reviews are mixed at TD but one person blamed it on the Marvell controller not being compatible with many motherboards. The spec sheet indicates the controller is SandForce 2281, not Marvell. So who is one to believe?

    OCZ AGT3-25SAT3-240G Agility 3 Series 2.5 Solid State Drive - 240GB, SATA III, 6Gbps at TigerDirect.com

Any pro/con comments appreciated. At $299 I'm tempted to just grab it.

i'm experiencing some tearing the screen at top, about 1-2 inches down. it only happens when switching scenery or high action images. i didn't notice it yesterday since i only played a rift, but trying borderlands today i saw the screen tearing really show it's self. i'm also getting it in 2d apps - just watching movies in full screen does the same.

oc'ed (not really oc, but running 575 stock with turbo), non "oc", turbo fans, etc. nothing makes a difference. the temps all look ok.

has anyone else had this problem? if so would a driver update fix it? i'm using the latest from msi's website. the bios on the mobo is 3.09 from 8/14. i'm assuming since only the video card is different that i can use the raid bios from the gt780.

i'll so some digging before i do an rma, but any help is appreciated.

installing 269.13 seems to fix the tearing, but now 2d suffers. Netflix playback stutters. guess it's just too new right now as even nvidia doesnt have official drivers on it's site.

I haven't yet ordered the 780 yet, since I've heard there will be a new version in October?

In any case, just for the sake of comparison - are there any other laptops available by other manufacturers that have similar specifications to the 780DXR? I've seen quite a few with i7, 8 or more RAM, dedicated card, etc, but none that I come across seem to have a matte screen or an option to have a matte screen (which is the most important feature in my opinion).

You could go for a sager/clevo, resellers offer matte screens upgrade.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, but I asked if there were any notebooks similar to the 780DXR with a matte screen by a manufacturer other than MSI.

I didn't seem to find any by Dell/Alienware, HP, Toshiba...etc. They seem to only offer a matte screen on their low end business notebooks, but they don't have the other specifications of the 780DXR.
