You wont' get exactly 120GB because Windows format 1024KB as 1MB instead of 1000KB as 1MB.

yes, the Asus G74SX-3DE came with 120Hz matte screen, but much more expensive and with weaker GTX560M GPU.

the 280 driver didn't fix the tearing in borderlands. i can't really see the tearing in rift but that may be back there's too much foliage (the scene varies too much to have a solid area to see the tearing). i haven't been able to check other games yet. netflix tearing has gone away for now. vsync has been tested both on and off on the games.

i had to get rid of the 280's b/c i lose the brightness adjustment.

This is not a driver issue. you need to enable vsync in borderlands to stop the tearing. It sucks there is no option in the game to do it but this is still easy enough.

    go here - USER NAME\Documents\My Games\Borderlands\WillowGame\Config

    and edit

Which is actually correct. Marketing says 120GB as in 120x1,000,000 when in reality, it a megabyte is 1024x1024 = 1,048,576 bytes.

So if the box says 120, it's more like 114 in real computer speak.

    Hi everyone,
I bought the MSI GT780DXR-099US laptop with RAID-0. It should arrive early next week. Do you know if it is possible to add a SSD for the SO? I want to keep 1.5TB of data but would love to add a separate SSD for Windows.
    Thanks!

The easy way to approach the usable space on any hard drive is multiply the stated size by .93 to get the usable space.

The only variation will be some SSD's will actually show less than 93% usable.
"Consumers may see a discrepancy between reported capacity and actual capacity; the storage industry standard is to display capacity in decimal. However, the operating system usually calculates capacity in binary format, causing traditional HDD and SSD to show a lower capacity in Windows. In the case of SSDs, some of the capacity is reserved for formatting and redundancy for wear leveling."

Sure it shouldn’t be a problem to use an SSD for your OS and boot drive, but why would you want Raid with an SSD? Isn’t more efficient to run SSD’s in non Raid?

Yes. If you put your SSD in as your primary drive, and then put the 2nd 750GB 7,200RPM drive in your Optical Drive bay (moving your optical drive into an external enclosure) you would end up with the same amount of storage, but you could not put the two 750GB 7,200RPM drives in RAID 0. Of course there is little purpose in putting storage drives in RAID 0.

You would end up with your SSD as C: drive, then your two 750GB 7,200RPM drives as D: and E:.

Thanks!!! I did not know that I could move the optical drive to an external enclosure (sorry this is my first laptop, I always used desktops computers). Is it difficult? Do I need cables or something else in order to do this?

You will need to buy an external SATA Optical Drive enclosure and an HDD Caddy for your optical bay. If you need help with this just call me at 1-877-711-1777 between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM Pacific Time Monday through Friday.

crap, i forgot to re-enable it last night on my last test, thanks for the reminder. i disabled all the start up vids, but forgot to compare the vsync on/off.

there was also tearing in watching netflix movies, but that's gone away for now. the tearing was only occurring in the top 1-2". after reinstalling the drivers the netflix tearing went away. though the tearing my have only been in HD movies.

i really can't check that at my house since even though i'm paying for 6Mb down i usually only get 3 and that's not a continuous enough stream for hd... thanks AT&T. it's stupid that if i pay for 3 i only get 1.5Mb when they obviously can have a steady 3Mb to my house... no other options, so i gotta deal with it.

damn' neweggg decreased the price of the 095US model and I received mine 3 days ago :D Someone has experienced with newegg customer service? Can we ask for a store credit?

I have a question: Is it possible to change the GPU frequencies associated with the One Touch Overclocking on the keyboard? I thing it's really stupid from MSI to underclock the GTX570m and let's us thing that the oc feature really oc...

EDIT: just chat with service representative of newegg.ca and, even if they don't offer a price guaranty they will refund me the difference. Great service!

#1 thanks for heads up on newegg price change. since i ordered more than a week ago they only offered me $50 instead of the full $80 but I'll take it.

#2 use MSI Afterburner to set the overclock you want. When you use turbo it'll use that setting and when you turn turbo off it'll go back to 525mhz.

Your score at vantage is really high. With stock driver I have only 11266 (GTX570m@ 575-1150, temperature around 70-75c). Which drivers do you use and what is your oc and temperature?

My score is with running the GPU at 725MHz and using 280.36 drivers. Majority of the games I play I don't even need to run on turbo though. i.e. just finished Warhammer 40k Space Marine and didn't need to use turbo at all. Ran totally smooth :)

My temps dont go above 70C but I had the air conditioning up rather high. If I turn on that super loud fan boost thing the load temp is only 60C.

Playing Space Marine myself, and I can confirm that it runs really well. 70C is my high at around stock clocks with higher OC it will top out at about 84C (turbo fan off). I don't notice it happening often, but sometimes I hear a faint crackling sound from my speakers (at least I think it's the speakers). It only lasts for maybe a second or two and then stops. This behavior is very infrequent, and everything else seems to work great (not planning on RMA). I just wanted to know if anyone else has noticed anything like this. Also is it just me or is the built in mic pretty terrible? I have an external mic so it's not a big deal, but the mics in my last two notebooks were far better.

I believe 6990m is better than 580m. 570m is a tiny tiny bit weaker than 6970m

Hey guys, I just got my laptop today and I'm getting ready to install a ssd as the primary drive. Since the windows DVD wasn't included, how do I go about reformating and installing a fresh copy of windows? Is there a tutorial anyone can point me to? I'm guessing that I need to create the recovery DVDs before I re-install windows, but I have never done this before. Thanks in advance!

Thanks guys! Yeah, I noticed the very first page links, but the version posted there seemed more complicated than the thread Mats posted. So far, I'm really impressed with this laptop, and the boot time isn't even that bad with the mechanical hds. I'm excited to see how much better it is with my Crucial M4 128gb ssd installed!

Another question. I have the 095US version and I'm assuming that it is already setup as RAID 0. As I understand it, I need to change the raid setting in bios to none? There was a 4 letter term to turn raid off that I read some where and now I forget it. To get into bios is f11 just after the post screen? I've gotten into bios several times before on other computers, but I just wanted to make sure.

AT, not after the POST screen press Del to get into the BIOS.

Then go to the Advanced tab and arrow down to RAID. Then Sft + twice to bring it to AHCI. F10 to save and exit.

To use one of your mechanical drives as your 2nd drive you should "clean" using DISKPART.

Got it, thanks. Should I use DISKPART to clean the second drive after I have the clean OS install completed? Or is that something I should do before hand?

Glad someone feels my pain, my friends were quite vocal about my bad mic. So I was forced to pick up an external. That aside, I've been too lazy to post about it but I've been playing Crysis 2 with the patches. Here's some data:

    min 22, max 51, ave 35.531FPS

These scores were obtained with my usual OC and DX11 on. The exact settings are in the screen. In addition, sandbox 3 is a joy with this system. I can have many many more exploding barrels now.

Thanks! Unfortunately I live in Argentina and it's difficult for me to call you; also I believe I cannot made payments with a non-US-credit card in your site (at least I tried a couple of weeks ago and failed) so I can't buy the required components from the site. I will try to find some sort of tutorial and see if I can do this myself a few weeks from now; my only concern is if I will be able to get the exact models of caddy for the optical bay. The external drive enclosure seems easy to get for the BR. Thanks again for your help I really appreciate it!

I got my laptop through Powernotebooks also...make sure you ask for Donald before buying. I did bank deposit & got the 3% discount. He won't try to sell you on unnecessary upgrades.

The total cost at the end was the cheapest then all other sellers (gentechpc, xoticpc, & rkcomputer) & Great service (updating specs + follow ups)

Although, I have heard Gentechpc (Ken) also offers great service..

In the interest of fairness and to be clear here, most of the resellers 'Price Match', and offer the 3% discount for 'Cash' purchases. This includes GenTech PC and XoticPC, who also ship Internationally.

Very interested in this machine for my new laptop. At this point I'm just wondering if it could be worth waiting in agony until next year. Do you guys think that a 600 series nVidia with Ivy Bridge could happen in the first 2 quarters of 2012?

I'm also wondering if MSI might make an 18" version since Alienware took the plunge.

Would be so tough of a wait with many great games being released in the next several months! I'm not sure what to do. :)

Some have experienced these issues with the SteelSeries keyboard, and your reseller or MSI should quickly resolve this for you. Your best course is to immediately RMA the notebook for keyboard replacement.... or perhaps have a keyboard shipped to you. What model is your unit, and from which reseller did you purchase? (This is why a SIG is helpful folks!)

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up - nVidia released a new beta driver today, 285.27. It doesn't support our 570m's officially, so it'll need to be modified.

I did a quick runthrough with them on my 570m, and with synthetic benchmarks, they were faster across the board for me. I've attached my edited inf file if anyone wants to use it. Just drop the .txt from the filename.

Go into the BIOS (Del button at the splash screen), Boot tab, and set your boot order to your hard drive first. It is apparently set to your LAN before your hard drive currently.

    Thanks for the inf file.
Can you let us know if with the new drivers you can control the brightness of screen from Windows using Fn key and up/down key?
    cheers.
EDIT : I can confirm that this version of Beta drivers with inf files supplied by Keith has no problems with screen brightness controlling within Windows.
    It works fine.
    Thanks Keith.
