Hi guys, few questions before buying this laptop:
Is it possible to change the hard drives without voiding warranty?
and if not, then is it possible to use the secondary drive as your boot-up drive? (i.e. install windows to the second drive).
Thanks
-
If you did a google search, you would probably find that taking the void warranty sticker off is taking a risk that you might void it. However, most of the time MSI will still honor the warranty (assuming you did not do any damage, while installing the upgraded hardware).
I've heard that it is possible to use the secondary hd (& bay) as your primary/boot drive, in theory. But they also stated that it may not work. I don't think there's much documentation about anyone trying to use the secondary drive as the boot drive. Most people just put it in the primary, and it's not really that hard to do. -
Happy dance, happy dance.
My computer shipped today. It will here on Thursday. I am soooo excited. It's been ~5 years since I treated myself to a new rig.
Happy dance! -

Only SATA ports 0 & 1 support SATA III, so if you are using a solid state drive that is where you want your boot drive. Otherwise you can boot from any drive, including your Optical Drive, thumb drive or external hard drive, as long as the device is bootable, or has a bootable disk in it.

probably I should try to contact MSI directly but I may have a faster response here. It's about the extension of the guaranty to 3 years if you register your laptop. MSI ask the original invoice but I bought mine at newegg so I just have an email... should I ask an original letter/bill to newegg or printing copy of the invoice is ok?

Hi everyone, I just received my GT683DXR-S1 from gentech today
I played with it for a while...thx to Ken for checking the screen for me for deadpixel prior to shipping...
I have to say it's quite a beast
But I do have some input & questions :
1. The keyboard is bad, it doesn't feel good when you type on it and it make cheap sound T_T
2. The touch pad is really bad (I remember someone posted about this before and I have to say I share his sentiment), it's not really sensitive, and you literally have to put a hard pressure on it T_T
3. Screen is nice...so does the audio
4. Is it normal for the laptop to be a bit noisy?
5. Is it normal that you could really feel that it's vibrating under the palmrest area and there's also some noise (constantly vibrates)?
Would appreciate if anyone would answer those questions
Oh, one more thing, when I started it up the first time, there's some *blablabla*reader starting up...and it's not responding right away T_T
I'll test this laptop with games and benchmark tool later and report -
-
You can "hide" it, but not remove it if you want to keep some of the touch panel functions. Do a little more research in this thread because people have asked that question numerous times. I personally don't get why so many people get so OCD about the star...in my opinion, it's not that bad.
-
Striker, since you originally posted the drivers link...Do you recommend installing the drivers from there or using the drivers CD for a fresh install?
-
1.) I actually love the keyboard, I love the bigger shift and ctrl keys. And I do not seem to hear any noise aside from the usual quiet click of chiclet keys everywhere. The keyboard is a known problem for this model, and if you think it's performance/build quality is abnormal you should contact MSI. The keyboard lighting is especially problematic. My keyboard is fairly evenly lit, but the Alt gr and win keys are much brighter than the rest.
2.) Touch pad is bad. I don't have to press or tap hard though. Still, bring a mouse with you as the touchpad is passable at best (and I'm the kind of person that usually uses the touchpad).
3.) Same here. I miss having a built in equalizer but the audio is the best in any notebook I've had so far. Screen is excellent as well, love the matte in this gloss glazed world.
4.) Depends on what you mean. If you mean fan noise then yes. But it isn't very intrusive for me as I'm usually rocking headphones. And then there is the dynaudio for distracting you.
5.) While this sounds bad, you could just be feeling the fan. Or more likely there looks to be a hard drive under there. If if it's a mechanical, then a light vibration is normal. Also note, that while it isn't the same region, I find the subwoofer will cause some mild shaking on my desk. -
1. is most likely due to the plastic coverings between the keys of the keyboard. This has been brought up many times. see if you can peel it off then everything will be fine -

Also, on another subject, does anyone have a slight bulge just to the left of the mouse touchpad? It's almost as if the frame is that way because there isn't any give when I press on it. Basically, the brushed aluminum portion of the laptop is pushed up a bit. It doesn't really bother me because it's only really noticeable when looking at it at eye level. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this as well? -
Right now I'm looking in disk management. It shows disc 0 as the ssd only, and disk 1 says unknown, 931.52 GB, Not Initialized. Maybe I didn't clean it out properly with diskpart?

I would first check bios insuring the boot priority is in order, and drives are set to ACHI. Do you have the latest bios? Then I would do the fresh WIN 7 install to the SSD, without the secondary in place. After installing Windows, run the W.E.I. to insure the OS recognizes the SSD, and optimally configures OS settings for SSD usage. While at it, I would then install all drivers and Windows updates. Once all of this is completed, then install the secondary drive after Windows is completely set-up on the SSD, and you should have no secondary drive recognition problems.
I hope this helps........

I figured it out. I went into the raid configuring screen (when you press control-i) and disabled raid from there as well. That seemed to work because it shows drive C as my primary boot drive, and drive E as my secondary drive now. C is the ssd, and E now correctly shows 465GB. I'm just hoping I have it setup correctly. By default, will the system install all programs to the ssd? If so, it seems like I'll run out of storage fast.
Striker, I installed a Crucial M4 128gb drive. I have the boot order as the optical drive, primary hd, then lastly the secondary hd. I disabled the e-sata in the boot sequence for now because it just added extra boot time. Would updating the BIOS improve the performance of the ssd? Just wondering because the it still stays on the windows symbol (during bootup) for a decent amount of time....or is this normal? Everything else runs quickly and windows pops up quickly after the loading windows (windows symbol) process. Thanks for your help Striker! -
Hello everyone, I just received my GT780DXR in the mail today and have been fiddling around without and I came across a problem regarding headphones.
When i attempt to use a Sennheiser PC 151 Binaural Headset with analog connectors, the microphone is detected but no sound is detected on the audio devices panel even when tapping it. Even when attempting to configure the device in windows and speaking into the microphone no sound is detected. The microphone works perfectly fine on a separate laptop.
However, when using a pair of logitech headphones with a USB connector and plugging into the GT780, the microphone is detected, sound recognized, and works fine. Is this a driver issue for the GT780, or is this a hardware issue? I assumed that since the device is being detected but not registering sound it would have to be a driver issue. Any thoughts would be appreciated -
Ken from gentech has replied me on this issue, he said it was normal to have the left hand side part of the palmrest to vibrate since the HDD is located there and it's the primary HDD. I'm just checking with other user here whether they experience the same thing...I'm just not too fond of the vibration since my prev laptops don't vibrate on the palmrest area.
For the noise...the fan is pretty noisy for me even without the turbofan turned-on...but it's still acceptable though...
USB will work because headset with usb connector usually has their own soundcard. -

Guys, I got a question. My brother and I tried before a Roccat Kave on the MSI GT680R, but the sound card came with the 4 ports, mainly green, pink, blue and grey. However, the Roccat Kave came with black, orange, pink green.
When I check the colour codes of each audio connector port, the black is for surround/rear output while the blue is an audio line level audio input.
Any idea how u guys solve this? He wants to obtain the best audio experience possible.
Putting the black jack to the blue connector is weird and isn't right.
Both the sound cards in MSI GT680 and MSI GT780 are the same, so I suppose I'm asking in the right thread =)
Do advice me, thanks =) -
Hello everyone, I'm a new member on here and I have been spending the past few days, weeks and maybe previous month going through 190 something pages and so far I am pretty much underworld-bent on getting this laptop. Seeing as to how everyone on here has been so helpful with questions I decided to throw on out with regards to the pricing; I am currently a Senior in High School and seeing as to how I was able to miraculously survive all four years on a Dell Latitude D610 (thing is a tank, build wise and speed wise literally), I decided to upgrade to a MSI GT780DXR. However, I only have a budget of 1700 (My family as a whole including parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles decided to pitch in 700 as a gift). The configuration I wanted on the laptop would make it reach a price of 1825, I honestly don't mind toning the machine down, but I was wondering if Gentech or MSI are known for having any sales on occasions such as Black Friday or Christmas. I don't need the laptop anytime soon, but it would be nice to know if I should order it now or later on.

It is unlikely that MSI will offer a Holiday Sale, but once a model comes to End of Life the prices usually go down. Of course that is when a new model with new technology has been released.
However you should contact your reseller of choice to see if they are able to discount your order based on its configuration. PowerNotebooks.com will always entertain such requests, and we will do our best to accommodate. However a discount of $125 would usually be beyond reasonable because resellers rarely even have that much gross profit in laptops...but it never hurts to ask. -
What you need is probably a USB DAC to replace the laptop sound card.

Gosh, I didn't know how to determine which type of headphones are for desktop while others are for laptops, please advice me @_@
Would the USB DAC have compatibility issues like what you told me last time? =) -
I am trying to register my new gt780dxr but am unable to locate the serial number. I thought it would be on the bottom of the unit. Any help is appreciated.

just what's the difference between the GT780DX and GT780DX R? I ordered the first one and would be appreciated if someone let me know ^^
-
Hi,
Yesterday I was trying to play with the OC of my GT780DXR-095US. I have installed the latest modded driver, oc @ 675Mhz with afterburner. My vantage score is 12750 (compare with 11350 with stock driver and gtx570m@575). Which is good but very far from the results that I have seen here. Do I miss something? Why such a difference? -
I have one more question that I hope someone can help me with. I have the gt780drx-099. There are 2 usb 3.0 ports. I thought they were the two on the right side of the computer, but when I pulled a usb 3 device in I got a message saying I could get more speed or something like that with a usb 3 device.
Am I using the right port? Can I use one of the normal usb 2 connectors or do I need a specific usb 3 one?
Thanks

Hiya folks,
I just ordered this laptop from xoticpc a few days ago and look forward to trying a few games on it when it arrives. Anyone know what kind of performance to expect with the 570m on games like Crysis 2, Dirt 2, Far Cry 2, F1 2010 at 1080p? Does the 570m perform on par with a desktop gtx 560? -
usb 3.0 has more pins, but i don't know if speed would decrease if you used 2.0 cables on a 3.0 device.
-
I just got the notification ... my unit has been delivered.
If only I didn't have to work for a living. I will be leaving work around 4 to pick it up from my MailBoxesEtc store.
The last time I was this excited about going home, my wife was still alive, and that was 19 years ago. -
Just got my GT780DXR from the UPS guy and I'm installing RIFT now.
I just wanted to make sure because I haven't really given a crap about a laptop since my last new laptop I purchased in highschool (that had a top-of-the-line 350mhz processor). So I wanted to know, is it safe to move a laptop when its on? Also, is it okay to put this laptop on my bed (as I'm doing now) or will those block the exhaust/intake vents and cause overheating?
Thanks in advance guys. -
Cheers -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
You should never use it on the bed without something hard like a TV Tray under it. Not only do you block the air circulation, you will probably be drawing lint into it which will eventually block your cooling system. -
