Ye ye. Messin in photoshop still. Hard things are hard. Learning with each tut, though. Anyway. You got the unit. So.... ;) ! You might be that kind and tell me, the width and height of the back side of the laptop. Wont be a deal breaker, but at least i´d know at what pixel resolution i´d have to work.

I am just guessing its a bit over A4 size. Correct ? If so, it will be easier then those A3 i am working on. Man, you cant even imagine what i brought on myself by telling my Art teacher that i do some photoshop art from time to time as hobby. Two results went already into bin. One is too small ( kept it ) second was messed up. It was either messed up, or i could copy i whole. Didnt want to, at all

....Aww, 10 you say. :D Lets see then !

The pin configuration on i7 and 2nd Generation i7 are different, it won't even power up your laptop if you put 840QM in Sandy Bridge mainboard:

I need the size of the back of the laptop - in cm / mm so i can put those exact values into photoshop, and create my own skin for the laptop. Thats what i need :)

Not that i will buy the skin anytime soon, but i lik to play with abstract images. And if i create something cool, i will also print it and use it as a skin.

    Hope its clear.

I am planning on purchasing an MSI GT780DXR shortly. I had planned to do it today but something one of the vendors told me made me reconsider. Would appreciate your advice.

I am coming from the Dell XPS line which, if any of you are familiar, are overheating/part-failing/constant service required machines. IMO, Dell's service is awful. I've had so many techs come to my house to replace parts and attempt to fix my machines that they should have keys to my home by now. That being said, I've seen that some (many?) MSI machines are having keyboard and trackpad problems. When I asked the MSI vendor about how service is performed, he said that I have to ship the computer to MSI or to them at MY expense. They repair the machine and then they pay to have it shipped back. Oh my.

I just checked the ASUS website (the G74 being my second choice). Although they only provide a 2-year warranty (which I"m not happy about), they do provide free shipping both ways. What drew me to the MSI were the reviews that said the audio was significantly better on the MSI, the MSI had a 3-year warranty standard, and the ASUS also seemed to have keyboard problems that, for the most part, didn't seem to be getting fixed (it appeared to me there were more users complaining about the problem).

If I have even a tenth of the problems with the MSI that I did with the Dell, I'll end up spending more in shipping and insurance than the computer will cost me. That is not OK. So a few questions:

    1) Is there any MSI vendor that includes to/from shipping when the computer needs to be serviced, or is this solely based on MSI's warranty terms? I'm currently evaluating Gentech, RK Computers,
Power Notebooks, and XoticPC (Amazon and Best Buy seem much higher in price and I want slight changes to the standard configurations that they sell). Currently I'm leaning toward Gentech because they seem the least expensive.

    2) What have your experiences been with getting service from MSI (e.g., how long are you normally without a computer, do you ever get it sent back to you without them solving the problem or the problem eventually reoccurring)?

    3) Obviously shipping rates vary based on where you are but, generally speaking, how much is it costing you to ship it to MSI for repairs (including insurance)?

    4) What repairs are you finding you have to ship it out for? I think I read somewhere that MSI puts a sticker that says you can't open the machine or it voids your warranty (which is absolutely ridiculous IMO). Yet it would seem like there might be some repairs we could do ourselves if they just sent us the parts (e.g., if you got a bad wireless card, it might be pretty easy to just pop-off the bottom and replace it if they just sent you a new one). Are there any repairs that, after speaking with MSI, you were able to do yourself to avoid shipping costs and downtime? If you did that, did that void your warranty?

After hearing about MSI's service policy regarding shipping, which I think is absolute crap, I think I might have just changed my mind and will go with the ASUS as they cover shipping both ways in case of repairs. What do you all think, and what am I not considering here? Thanks much.

Well, with the different contours, it hard to know exactly what measurements to give you. Anyhow, the back of the lid is approximately 17" x 11". Just wait until yours arrives, because I think you will like the brushed aluminum.

True, i might end up without a skin, although its a perfect place to show off :p We will see. One of my classmates got MSI Notebook ( not laptop i think ) and the back side is glosyy-like and you can see every finger print there, just everything. It looks ugly so thats why i wanted a skin. And also to let my creativity go wild :p

But i will wait until my unit arrives, as you said Striker. Sounds reasonable.

By the way - new sig, finally. Inspired by you :p

Also would like to add my concern. I feel kind of bad for buying such an expensive laptop. I am an tech enthusiast an all that stuff, but still. I am not yet in the age when i could get such item. Or well, where i should. I feel bad because if i imagine, what could we buy instead :p Would be furniture for both my and living rooms. Anyway, "money are holding" as of now, and i am getting this masterpiece.

PS : Someone asked if you could put next gen card / cpu into this machine. I dont remember the answer. Was it no, or was it unkown ( or difficult )?

Check the MSI website for warranty condition's, that will answer all your questions. I personally use Gentech and have been very happy with the service provided. You can email them to ask and Ken will let you know how he does warranty service.

The sticker can be broken without voiding the warranty. it says it will but as long as you are careful they really don't care.

If you are considering Asus, just be aware that they might provide shipping both ways but, they provide the WORST notebook service in the industry. I like their notebooks, but from personal experience I will never buy another notebook from them just so I do not have to deal with their service department ever again.

The MSI has the specs and price point of what I wanted, so I gave it a try and I have been very happy, the thing is rock solid stable, cools well, and plays all games great.

Like MrSeaBass said MSI really don't care about the warranty stickers especially if you buying from their gaming resellers.

MSI provide great service and if you search on this thread you will find some owners (not my customer) having keyboard issues, I ask MSI to help and MSI just send them the new keyboard.

I've watched the videos on youtube with the performance gtx570m and gtx560m
One thing I do not understand, as you might in bad company 2 have nearly the same performance (2-3fps better the gtx570m) and on Crysis 2 the gtx570m in full about 35fps and Gtx560m does not even reach the 20fps?

The performance of this gtx570m is very disconcerting.
The same yields the same level as a gtx560m in most games, but Crysis 2 behaves in the level of a Hd6970m or better.

The standart is HDMI 1.4 60/120hz out ( 3D Supported ). Must admit, that i like that HDMI. It will serve good because i got all in 3D. 3D Computer, 3D Smartphone, this year 3D TV. So this allows me to pretty much get connected with anything in my home :)

Does anyone know if there is any difference between the normal MSI GT780DXR and Gentech's Barebone MSI GT780DXR? The only difference I found was that the Barebone lacked the light up keyboard which I don't mind, but does it also lack the dynaudio system or anything else?

As far as i know, the backlit keyboard is missing ( as you said ), the cooler boost is missing, the turbo feature is missing. Thats what i remember back on page 212 i think from Rob if i am correct. I personally wouldnt buy the barebone version, but its your decision.

If i configure the barebone version to what my 099-US has, its only 200 bucks cheaper, but lacks most of the features which makes this a true gaming laptop.

As for the backlit keyboard, could you tell me why dont you mind ?

+ I add my question - (What is the difference between i7-2630 and i7-2760. As for me i would think its about loading times and few FPS during gaming. Correct?) - All right i know the answer :) Its very high boost. I was shocked. Definitely will be used when gaming and doing some holiday GFX :D

I was on the same question, but i decided to go with the "real" one, is just to litlle diference and in my case i need to have it for long time, and the added warranty of the msi is just worth it, if you are going to buy another one next year, i would say go with the barebone, but take in count that the value of the barebone will be less than the one of the laptop at the time of selling the old one, i dont know, that was what i thought when i bought.

BTW Im the proud owner of a GT780DX-X8 right now, i just have to wait until october first to have it in my hands :D

The PowerPro R 12:17 (barebone MSI GT780DX) has Turbo Cooling. It does not have Turbo Drive Engine, but you can actually do more with nVIDIA Inspector and you can pin it to your P1 button.

To add to this - i am still interested if you could put a Kepler in this laptop. If so, it will be very very cool. If not however, i would like to know if for example some retailers would buy the "old" GT780DXRs for , lets say, 80 per cent of the price as some sort of guaranty, so that the new laptop will be cheaper :p I am really wondering about this since i would like to have a kepler in my laptop. They are said to be quite powerful.

Not going to happen, you'll have to sell your GT780DXR yourself and upgrade to a new notebook. It might not be until almost next summer before mobile Kepler gpu's are ready for market.

All right. Then i guess i might skip and wait for maxvell. I think the GTX570 will still be able to run most games on high. By the way, 580M could be added instead of 570M ? Or will not fit...?

Is it possible to output the display from this monitor using hdmi to a big screen tv for console style gaming? Can the same be done for 5.1 sound? I was thinking it would blow away the xbox 360 in terms of graphics (I like my xbox 360 but it would be way cooler to run pc/console ports like Dirt 2 at 60 fps with better visuals).

Yes, I think it is. If your TV supports HDMI 1.4 then it should be able to connect to your laptop and play games on it. As for the controlling of the game ( KBM ) you will probably have to have your laptop closer to you if you use cable accessories - which for every true gamer and enthusiast is a must :).

Its actually something i plan on doing too this year when i get my Samsung Smart TV 40"/400hz. I will put this lappy in the middle and just play on my bed. I already see the joy of weekend gaming like that. I might even buy a legal copy of some race game like Shift 2 to enjoy this fully :p

My 42" plasma tv is 720p, so I will get awesome frame rates at that resolution from this laptop. I plan to use a wired or wireless xbox 360 controller connected to the laptop. I have read about people using their gaming pc's to play games on big screen tv's and never understood how, but with this laptop it actually makes sense.

How can I tell if my tv supports hdmi 1.4? And how exactly does the 5.1 surround sound wiring work?

One thing is to google your tv and look for supported inputs and outputs. Or, you can check the back side of your TV. The HDMI 1.4 looks like this : http://www.audioshowcase.com/hires/hdmi-441xx.jpg - And so does the input and output. Since you are connecting two devices which are female you need a standart male/male hdmi cable to connect your laptop with the TV. Shouldnt be a problem to get. Just dont get anything expensive, since hdmi sends only 1s and 0s as far as i remember, so if some hdmi cable claims to be "better" or "faster" or whatever, dig some info if its really worth the investment over standard cable ( i would say not, so get some cheaper one and you should be fine ).

From what i read it might work. HDMI 1.4 is backwards compatible with 1.3 but not vice versa. That would mean - if you are connectin your lappy to your TV you should be able to connect it. But you will lack some of the HDMI 1.4 features. Like Ethernet, Full HD 3D playback( and higher resolutions ). Since your TV isnt 3D i guess, 1.4 doesnt matter.

So overall, it should work. At least thats what i got from reading some articles :) Best way to find out is eithr ask some IT tech guy, or try it yourself. I would try it myself :)

Can someone help me or point to the right direction?

I am looking for the 280.26 mod drivers that Ken used. Also, on the main page there is this available (GTX 570M vBIOS (1210.bin) - from gentechpcforums ....but it looks like they have erased all threads from there boards.

Am I missing something here? I Know officially Nvidia has not released anything yet from there website.

Does anyone know where I can find a power adapter for GT780DXR? I think it has a 180watt unit?

I usually keep one at home and carry one with my bag... can someone help? Also, is there a bigger battery available for this laptop? 12-cell would be great.

    Thanks in advance. :)

On the first page of this thread, there is a list of reputable retailers that sell extra power adaptors. There aren't any 12 cell batteries out that I know of. I'm sure something will pop up in the near future. Actually, now that I think about it, it would be hard to fit a larger battery where the battery slot is located. It's not located at the back, which is where many laptop batteries are located and can fit a larger battery protruding from the back.

I thought that the heatsink used on the 570m is the same as the 580m? Either way, it will depend on compatibility of the 580m and other core components, specifically the cpu and chipset.

Can anyone point me towards a good CPU overclocker? I looked at the first post, but couldn't find anything except for CPU-Z, which doesn't have OCing tools. Thanks.

A bigger battery is not available, but we have the 180W AC Adapter available under Accessories on our website.

Still no reports of overheating or blue screen? Did the problems were solved with the SteelSeries keyboard?

I've had the 095us model for almost a week now and haven't had a single blue screen. I figured I might get at least one while experimenting with video card drivers, but nope! I usually use an external mouse and keyboard, so I haven't gotten much use out of the mouse touchpad or keyboard. However, I don't have the uneven lighting in the keyboard that some others have experienced.

does anyone else have a problem with this keyboard?

i'm a hardcore gamer and when i press "r" or any other key on my keyboard i want it to respond quickly and accurately without having to smash the key dead center.

is it just me? or is that just steelseries? did i get a faulty keyboard i need to send back?

The cpu and mb chipset have nothing to do with it, I don't know where you got that idea. The card itself will be standard, however, the layout of the memory and core of the gpu itself on the card might not be in the same locations as the 560M or the 570M which would mean that is MSI does not release a GT780 with a 580M the heatsink will not physically fit withing the notebook. We will just have to wait and see what the future holds as this is still unknown.

I have had the GT780R since June and have never had neither overheating or a blue screen ever. That is with a minimum of 6 hours of use per day with countless hours of gaming. Also throughout this thread I have not seen anyone else with these issues.

Only the very first shipment of GT780R's had issues with the keyboard, after that, they were resolved. There still a few complaints here and there but very minimal. It seems that there are just a few that do not like this keyboard. Personally, I think it is great.

@snowmanboy - If you do get a keyboard that you do think is faulty, you can contact the reseller or MSI and they will have MSI send you a new keyboard without you having to send the whole notebook back for an RMA. At least this is what they have been doing up until now.

I have played with my laptop which i bought from Powernotebooks( Donald took care of it very well) for almost 2 weeks. All i can say this laptop runs very cool. I use HWMonitor to monitor the temps of CPU/GPU. The max temp was 74C for CPU, and 73C for GPU after 4 hours playing games ( StarCraft 2, Dead Island). I had Toshiba Qosimo X775 Q7272. The temp of the CPU reached to 92C after 2 hours playing Starcraft 2, and the GPU was around 72C.

No overheating here. Runs much cooler than my last notebook, even after hours of playing games. Still loving my steelseries keyboard, there seem to be less reports of the lighting issue, but the keystroke issues seem to be hanging around (never had any problems like that myself).

I got my Laptop from Gentech. Ken helped to configure the system and looked personally for thorough checkup before shipping it to me. Since I live outside US I asked him to do so. Thanks Ken once again.
I have tried out Furmark with Hyper PI running together for couple of hours to check for any stability issues. I haven't tested the unit with GPU fully overclocked but at approx 20% OC (all core, shader and Memory OCed). I wasn't able to detect any stability related issues or GPU overheating problem leading to artifacts. I was also using default FAN speed not the turbine mode (I call it so because of the noise FAN generates when running at full speed :) ). I hope that helps.
    Cheers
