I have an SSD in mine (Intel 510 Series). Before I wipe my machine, do I need to do anything special? Or just wipe, install, install drivers, profit (hopefully)

I, personally, would choose faster CPU over SSD any time. For Photoshop it is much better to get 16 Gigs of Ram + fast(er) CPU, since Photoshop saves data and images into RAM and it is also designed that way. Photoshop uses HDD/SSD as the second option when all the ram is pretty much "depleted".

For gaming i would also go for faster CPU. Most of the guys ( and some enthusiast as well ) will tell you, that it is better to have a Raid 0 HDDs then one SSD for gaming. So there CPU wins again.

BUT, if you really rely on faster loading times and you want to be able to access files faster, then i would go for SSD, but as the last option. I would certainly say it is a wrong assumption, that replacing CPU is easier then replacing HDD for SSD. Imo, its the other way around. I cant imagine that i would change the CPU, in any way shape or form. Thats said without a shadow of a doubt. Its really much easier to buy SSD later ( later doesnt mean next year, but it means later after the purchase ) and connect it to your laptop :)

Recapitulation - I would do it this way - Get better CPU, rather Raid HDDs, lots of RAM. Later on, get SSD for some neat windows loading times, etc.

Of course its up on you :) Just my opinion on that matter above. Enjoy.

I would think that the 780DXR is more GPU than CPU bound, so for gaming I am not sure that a CPU upgrade would be that noticeable. You may see more of a difference from Photoshop or other utilities. Personally I would get more use from the SSD.

Hey all :) Just got myself an MSI 780DX :D Upgraded the network card to a bigfoot 1103, added a 120gb intel 510 SSD and upgraded to 16gb of ram :) fun fun!

    I have a few questions:
Is there anything in particular you guys would recommend I do to my machine to make it perform as best it can? So far, I've formatted it and installed a copy of win7 ultimate 64bit. I've installed all the drivers from the CD that came with it.

I notice sometimes that keys don't seem to properly register....I'm not sure if it's because I'm not used to the keyboard or the keyboard itself. Any suggestions?

Finally, does the touchpad not support any multitouch gestures or scrolling gestures or anything? I've installed the Sentellic drivers that were on the CD, and enabled them from the settings panel for the touchpad, but they don't seem to work.

    Thanks :)

:D Hey everyone!! This is my 1st post please forgive me I'm a Newbie. I have been researching for a while now and finally decide to get GT780DXR-099US -- I had been looking where and who to buy it from. I received an e-mailed from XoticPC and was offer to look at GT780DX-X1. I configure it to the spec of GT780DXR-099US and it came out cheaper but I'm a bit worry  ...

Does anyone know anthing or has a GT780DX-X1? Is there a difference?

Has anyone heard of Professional Monitor Color Calibration w/ Spyder 3 Elite?

The Display Configuration has the Standard Matte LCD Scrren and another w/ 72% NTSC Color Gamut -- What difference does the 72% NTSC Color Gamut has or make?

Also, If I Upgraded the network card to a bigfoot 1103 can I find a card that can provide bluetooth?

Truly appreciate your input -- Thanks. :)

Hi guys! also my first post.

I've been looking to get the MSI GT780R for a while now and scrolled trough over 200 pages in this thread to get any info on how the MSI works with bf3.

Has anybody tried the Alpha? And could someone please test the Beta on the 29/9 and give some response to if it's up for the job.

I know MSI has released a new one with the 570 gfx card but I live in Sweden and that model (780DX) costs 2 867,23 USD in sweden =/

    Take care!

I believe the only difference is that the X1 has less ram (4gb instead of 8) and smaller hdd, not entirely sure.

The stock screen should also be 72%, so I'm not sure if upgrading would give something, you might have to ask xoticpc lol.

I prefer intel wireless over bigfoot, if you need bluetooth, just go with the 6230.

I am really afraid that with the recent announcement of the official Hw requirements, you will not get anyhow wide range of options in BF3. GTX560M... GTX560 ! Desktop ! is recommended, and recommended is always something around medium-to-high.

Zh1nto confirmed that you need SLI GTX580 for Ultra. We do not know if ultra means all maxed out on 3 Monitors, or Full HD, but i would certainly say Full HD, even though its unrealistic ( so far ).

So, GTX560 M will let you play Battlefield 3 right under the medium settings. Which would probably be 4xAA/AF ( or less ), FHD, Medium texture quality, DX11 without any fancy stuff. Well, sounds still good, since BF3 look great even on consoles, so not worried about not having million flying particles around and blinding light in my eyes but would be nice to have it on, right.

With GTX570M overclocked to the maximum, Drivers that actually would support this card, flashed Bios, fast CPU ( here you guys see 2760 or higher is needed, SSD wont help you here ) and a grain of luck or two you might b able to step into the High options, with DX11, FHD, 4xAA/4xAF ( or Less ) and even some DX11 fancy stuff.

Its more or less a raw guess of mine, since the requirements are a bit dodgy, but i would say that with Boosted GTX570 you will get decent high-end BF3 experience.

I think you should probably wait until at least the beta is out to give such analysis. The minimum requirements are much less then any sandy bridge cpu or 500 series nvidia gpu, desktop or mobile.

First of all thanks for helping me :)

I been thinking about lowering the resolution, i normaly play in like 1024 x and that has always been greay in my eyes.

Been thinking about buying a desktop instead cuz its more bang for the buck (especially in sweden) But would be rather nice playing bf3,D3,FM12 on my couch relaxing to HIMYM or something. But guess i have to wait until the beta releases.

Would be great if someone with this laptop could test it post some screens fps and such.

    Thnx for a great thread!

I am well aware of that, but minimal specs are specs you need JUST to run the game. Not actually play. Just be able to launch it. I myself couldnt install MW2 on my dads PC, cuz it didnt have GPU with Shader model 3...So those are you minimal specs.

Recommended specs means that you will be able to play if you have at least whats written in there, on medium details. So, somewhere in the middle between "Minimal" and "Recommended" is what you are looking for.

I, however, am against any resolution changing. I got used to FHD. I know GTX570M can run this at FHD, but idk at what detail level. Probably medium, meaby high, who knows. Just saying that it wont be the "Maxed out, np" as i though before. Still, as many pointed out in other threads over enthusiast forums ( OCN - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net ), and as one of them i must agree with them, its pretty much like Crysis. Maybe someone else posted it here, sorry if you did. And the matter is that BF3 is actually so advanced that even on Medium, it probably will look similar to e.g. MW3 at it finest. Which is still good, and as you point out, we should wait for beta. I seriously hope, though, that for Zh1nto "Ultra" Means 3 Monitors, maxed out. If so, then pff, we are okey

I'm willing to bet you can play BF3 at the medium settings and it's still going to look better than the consoles :p

Hi guys! I talk whith Donald about my warranty registration and the fact that there was no way i could get my invoice to get MSI here in USA before my period to do the registration would expire, so Donald reaaally kindly send to MSI the invoice and ask them to do the registration for me, in fact, to validate the purchase of my laptop.

Everything went super fine and super fast, in less than a few hours my laptop was registered and the panic pass out :D

    Thanks Donald!!!

They probably have updated sentellic drivers on the first post of this thread. Give those a try because you're CD drivers might be slightly outdated. The touchpad mouse should have tap to click, scroll up/down on the right side, and scroll left/right on the bottom. As far as I know, that's the extent of the touchpad's capability. I know I wish they would have implemented a two-finger scroll, but I guess that's more of a Apple thing.

If your keyboard is missing keystrokes then you might have to get an rma, contact where you bought it for info on this. Some people have been getting msi to send them new keyboards without having to rma the entire notebook, ymmv.

For the trackpad, I have had the best luck with the driver that is listed in the first post here from the MSI forums.

    Hello,

I am a new GT780DXR user from France.

    I have several question.
When raid is enable, if I place a in hard disk, in the other hard disk they write the same thing ?

I have tried to make the hard disk in ACHI mode but when I reboot the computer tells that they lack an operating system.

No, they don't write the same thing. The controller is a RAID 0 which means:
"A RAID 0 (also known as a stripe set or striped volume) splits data evenly across two or more disks (striped) with no parity information for redundancy. RAID 0 was not one of the original RAID levels and provides no data redundancy. RAID 0 is normally used to increase performance, although it can also be used as a way to create a small number of large logical disks out of a large number of small physical ones.

A RAID 0 can be created with disks of differing sizes, but the storage space added to the array by each disk is limited to the size of the smallest disk. For example, if a 120 GB disk is striped together with a 100 GB disk, the size of the array will be 200 GB."

    Source: Wikipedia

If you have the raid 0 system then by changing in bios to AHCI windows won't start at all.
If you want to have AHCI mode then you have to break the raid matrix and then reinstall windows.

    Regards!

In raid 0 the 2 hdd are seen as a one hdd by the system and the data are striped on both drives.
If you want to use both drives independently then you have first to disable the raid in bios and then choose Delete Raid Volume or Reset Disks to Non-RAID in the menu (I don't remeber what is the shortcut for this menu).
Very important thing to you is that after doing this you will loose all your data so before doing it backup everything. There is another option for backup-ing the entire system using some programs like norton ghost to backup the raid system and then restore it into the non-raid system.

By the way, why do you want to remove the raid?

If you are going to break the RAID and use the 2 disks separately. Please, do not forget to use the MSI utility to make backup dvd's of the factory partition, which will also be lost when you break the raid.

    Hi guys,

I received this week my GT780DXR and is AWSOME. Crysis 2 works great at max detail dx11 enabled. But I have a question for you, hopefully you can help. My computer is supposed to be RAID0, and all settings seem to be OK in BIOS and also in Windows configuration, though I see 2 hard disk units in windows explorer. Is this normal? THankksssssssssssssss

Please, I need to make a choice for a new laptop and Im getting my payment in 7 days! Wanna spend it wisely! Send me some FPS benchs for GTX570M playing SC2 please!

    Thanks in advance!

Little confused on GPU overclocking - do I need to hit the turbo boost fan button for the gpu to overclock? Or does the fan ramp up on its own?

Using MSI Afterburner. Ramped it up to 700 and was getting something like 2649 (using the free version). Didn't really see a difference between hitting the fan, except at max that thing puts out an insane amount of noise.

You need to press the Turbo button, not the Fan button, to allow for overclocking. Then you will notice the performance boost. ;)

Exactly my question. Why would you willingly break the Raid 0 ?

Hope that you get your fixed unit soon. Waiting is the hardest, and also kinda annoying thing about the whole laptop stuff ;)

HD6990M is about 10 percent faster than HD6970M as far as i am concerned, so its around 15 percent faster then GTX570M. Not that big of a difference. Also, 3GB Memory is neat, but mostly useless as is Crossfire or SLI. ;) I dont think there are any "Benches" running SC II, rather then each of the users opinion on that matter. I chose to get my Laptop from US. It is, however, very wise to order from Deviltech if you have some personal issues when ordering from US. I didnt want to order from german site, especially if i know nothing about them, so i did it my way :) I hope that you choose wisely and that you are going to be happy with your unit some time soon.

Its almost over now, isnt it ? If you got your unit today, lucky you dude, lucky you. You got whole weekend to play with that baby. Oh, how i envy you :p ! When i got my Evo 3D Smartphone one week ago, i got it on Friday and the next two days were totally astonishing. I still have such days, just not that much time to play with it.

Fan boost is mostly used during stress testing ( benchmarks, or heavily demanding games ). It does not overclock you GPU as far as i am concerned, and it also yields no FPS gain whatsoever. However, turning that fan boost ON will let you overclock you GPU more, because it will put the temperature low, and thus enabling you to overclock more, thus enabling you to get more FPS while playing games, or getting higher score while benching.

Generally, around 30 fps is good for most games. I definitely get at least 30 fps on average in SC2. Depending on the settings, I usually get in the 40+ fps range. If I max everything out in graphics, then it still runs fine. However, there is some lag during game cinematics (not the movies). If I OC my gtx 570m with afterburner or inspector, it makes the max settings run a bit smoother. I don't have any screen shots of the benches, but I will try to post some.

After a fresh install, P1 won't do anything until the drivers are installed as well. I think he was referring to P1 needing to be pressed, for TDE, as opposed to pressing the "turbo" Fan button, which will only increase fan speed. You can also install GPU OC software, such as nVidia inspector and set it to your P1 button.

I hope you get your fixes processed quickly! Aren't you in a different country than the US as well? I wonder how bad shipping can get for RMAs etc. I will be getting my glossy LCD screen today, and I'm excited to see the difference between the two. Other than that, I haven't had any issues with the keyboard or touchpad. My only problem was with the M4 SSD, and it was fixed with a firmware update.

Ok so im a bit confused. I will admit that I have not read all 302 pages of this thread but I have done my best to skim through a good number of them.

Are there any differences between the 780DR and 780DXR (other than default memory and hard drives?

In terms of the keyboard issue did the DXR fix it in some way shape or form? If the extra $200 keeps my keyboard from being screwed up I guess I can suck it up but a base model is already at the tip top of my budget.

I think you meant GT780DX, and there are not any other differences besides stock memory and hard drive configuration. The 099US model comes with a BR ODD, but that's it. I have had a 780DXR-095US model for a little more than a week, and have not had any keyboard problems. I suggest going for a barebones model and customizing that if the backlit keyboard isn't worth it to you. I think most barebone systems start around $1100-$1200, excluding the CPU, memory, windows, and wifi-card.

If you want the backlit keyboard, and are willing to take the risk of it being defective in one way or another, the 780DX is fine. The benefit of buying the more expensive configurations is that you get a bit of a discount on certain upgradable components over what most retailers would charge.

Thanks for the input. Sadly the backlit keyboard is one of they key factors for me. So looks like I will just buy a base DX model and upgrade the HD/Memory/ODD myself to get started and then maybe the CPU at a later time (yes I am well aware it voids my warranty).

    Thanks guys! :)
Xault, MSI redirected me to a local repair shop, they told me that it'll take 10-15 days. If I recieve it and it still has issues, I'm going to request MSI to take it back and send me a new unit. Its very annoying when you have to give your main computer away expecially when you need it most. I've had lot's of crucial data on there, and lots of projects. I'll give the service center a call tomorrow to make sure they don't format the laptop, or atleast if they do, the should move the "Users" folder to drive D: to avoid deletion.

Taking the sticker off most likely won't void the warranty, but it's more of a backup protection for MSI in case you damage anything while installing upgrades. Pretty much everything is easy to upgrade, except for the LCD display, 3rd wifi antenna mod, CPU, and GPU. If you know what you are doing, then anything can be upgraded fairly easily. So far, I have upgraded my primary HD to a SSD and I'm getting ready to swap the LCD to glossy.

    i have 4 questions about the GT780 ...

1- How good is the quality of the speakers when listening to music or those just for gaming (i'm well aware it's very loud, I'm asking about the quality)

2- is it possible to upgrade the GPU in the future?

3- I'll purchase this one within 1 or 2 wks, which upgrades do you suggest ? I'll upgrade to SSD if it doesn't cost that much

4- is there any heat problem... or is the fan noisy when just browsing and watching videos ?

    1. IMO, they are the best "laptop" speakers in terms of quality sound. However, I don't think they are better than most external speaker setups, and I don't think laptop speakers will be as good as external speakers anytime in the near future.

    2. There's a good chance that the gtx 570m GT780 can be upgraded to a 580m, but it depends on the heatsink setup and they are very expensive right now. With the gtx 570m, I think you get the best bang for you're money.

    3. Upgrade to at least a 64GB SSD, but 128GB is recommended. Any upgrades are typically personal preference. Many think that it is worth while to upgrade the CPU, wifi-card, memory, etc. But, there will definitely be a pretty big cost jump for the CPU.

    4. No heat problems, especially if only browsing and watching videos. Depending on how many browser windows/videos you have up at once, it might kick up the fan a bit. The only time when the fan is really noticeable is when the "turbo" fan button is on, which puts it on full speed. The auto fan controller also usually kicks up to about medium-high when gaming, though I don't think it has ever gone as high as the "turbo" fan button on auto.

You should add that this update link is for raid systems.

Here is the non-raid update. 1761_10C.zip

I was having trouble running the flash.bat file. It kept saying something about it being non-compatible with 64-bit operating systems.
