Does anyone have any recommendations for those things you put over the keyboard area to protect the screen? For the life of me I can't remember what they are called but I don't want this to end up like my macbook where I could probably almost type on the screen the key imprints are so visible.

Software/Firmware Raid 0 & 1 -
Just placed my order on the barebones version of the 17" model from GenTech.
EDIT: Just realised the barebone version does not come with 1 year international warranty! I'm going to have to switch to the 215US version, hopefully I can just send Ken the remaining sum for the switch without waiting for a refund.
2nd EDIT: Asked to cancel all orders, as much as I'd like to be part of the owners' lounge it's just not the right time right now. -
Mine is somewhere in Ontario atm. It should be here Monday at the latest, but hopefully tomorrow. This is pretty much the first GT780DX-263US; Amazon.ca still lists them as available Oct 1st, and the 263US seems Canada exclusive. Not sure if there's any change compared to the american model (215US?).
I have a quick question though. On MSI's website, they offer a BIOS for RAID and one for non-RAID. Is there any reason to not install the RAID enabled version?
And finally, the package is listed as being 16lbs. Considering that the laptop is about 9lbs, is it safe to assume that there's some free stuff included? -

None, always install the raid bios and if you are not using raid change to AHCI in the bios. This way it is always available if you change your mind. We always install the raid bios in our deliveries.
16lbs sounds like overkill, the power brick is about 2-3lbs. Should be 12-13lbs total. -
Msi treats its customers with respect, thus more weight = rise that feel of some free stuff, then realize someone messed up the numbers

Hi, I'm the autor of this review.
I haven't replace the CPU, MSI ship some GT780DXR models with i7 2670QM in Europe.
I've play BF3 with FPS between 25 and 40 on the 2 maps. I've used the MSI original drivers for the 570M and I've activate turbo. I'ven't apply any OC when i've play BF3. I play in 1920x1080p. I've put Battlefield 3 in HIGH but there isn't many difference between Low and Ultra mode. Probably performances settings aren't fully implemented. We will have better performances in game when nvidia release 570M verde drivers.
The OC at 700/1400/1500 is just for testing and benchmark purpose, it's seems to be stable but I haven't try this frequencies in game.
If you have another question, ask me, i will try to give you an answer
Sorry for my english
-
^ Hmm~ but that's not too good... Don't they raise the price of shipping the package if it's heavier?
-
I went out of my way to read your article too! very well written! But I had to translate it to Chinese to read so there were a few spots that translated badly, do you think you can rewrite it in English? XP
-
Thank you ! <3
I haven't a good english, i'm not sure Google will translate it better than now ^^ I will try latter with the help of a friend. -

The difference between 13 to 16lbs shipping cost is about $5.00 not a major difference. -
Another week.... without the laptop :<
Called warranty yesterday and they said it isn't ready yet
-
I can translate it for you if you want to. Let me know and I'll send you a translation in pm, probably within a day.
On a sidenote, my laptop just arrived Montreal. It should catch the morning shipment and be here early afternoon. Can't wait
-
Oh yes SeriousBam ! Thank you !
-
Thank you SeriousBam! Also if anyone needs English to Chinese or Chinese to English translation I can help.
Thanks for the input! Does that mean if we buy two Laptops in one go the shipping fee won't increase by much? -
Thanks to SeriousBam, there is an English version : P4G / [REVIEW] MSI GT780DXR-298FR w/ i7 2670QM & GTX 570M & Crucial M4 256Go
Original French version with a few more details and informations : P4G / [REVIEW] MSI GT780DXR-298FR w/ i7 2670QM & GTX 570M & Crucial M4 256Go
Big thanks to SeriousBam ! -

Hi, and thanks for the review.
After reading your review, I see you were critical of the microphone. Others have reported this as well, and it is quite possibly a correctable manufacturing flaw. Some are reporting that the microphone holes in the screen's frame are blocked, because they were not punched all the way through the frame. On page# 308 of this thread, you will find post related to this topic. Check this out, and let us know what you find.
Thanks!

Does anyone hear click noise coming from there laptop? ...What is that??...it's not from the speaker only comes on once in a while.

Hi,
I have a question about the extended guaranty. I have sent the papers asked by MSI and received a week later an email saying that my product is register but when I check on my MSI account I just have a 2 years guaranty... Do you have the same thing? Does this laptop qualify for the free extended guaranty? (I am from Canada, bought it @ newegg.ca). -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
I am wondering the same thing. After mailing MSI my invoice, my account only shows 2 years too. (To check the status of your warranty, login HERE!)
In accordance with this MSI Newsletter,
Some resellers were showing 3 years warranty, but now they seem to have reverted this back to 2 years.
It will be upsetting if MSI has gone back on their word, especially without some form of public notification.
I've email'ed my reseller on this.....
EDIT: XoticPC is still listing the following:
And this.....
RK Computers is also showing a 3 year warranty HERE! -
I just checked mine and it says 3 years. I bought with Gentech in late August.

Thanks Jim,
Yeah, mine should be showing 3 years too, but it's not, so I am just a bit concerned here.
-
looks like MSI changed his warranty policy in September, the website doesn't refer to any extension of guaranty for the GT780DXR. I m going to send them an email and see if it changes something but I doubt about it
-
When I registered my 683DXR, it also showed 2 years versus the 3 years it was supposed to. I emailed Customer Service and asked about it. I was told it was a "error" in their system, and they would change it to reflect the proper 3 year coverage, which they did.

WOW! Someone at MSI must be watching this thread, because this very moment, I just received an email from MSI regarding my warranty. After logging in and checking it again, my account NOW shows my notebook has 3 years of warranty.
COOL!
-
There are 2 steps:
1: register within 30 days.
2: email/mail your invoice to MSI.
3: They will update your warranty status to 3 year once they received your invoice, however, it could take 1~2 weeks. -
Cool
How long since you sent your invoice? I sent mine 3 weeks ago, maybe it takes a bit longer. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah, perhaps I wasn't patient enough. I sent it UPS with tracking, so I knew they had the invoice in their hot little hands for a week. It is funny how the moment I complain here, it gets updated.
In your case, I dunno..... there may be an issue with NewEgg.ca. I think this offer was a U.S. only..... not sure if Canada applies here. -

I'd like to add upgrading the CPU is EASY on this machine, by the time you need any extra CPU horsepower you would be out of warranty so an upgrade would be cheap and easy. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Thanks Ken!
It's all good, and I am all better now!
-
Mine shows 2 years also and it was registered in July. I just sent an email to MSI.
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah, perhaps it's just a situation like Keith said, and your email will get this resolved for you. Hope so..... keep us posted.
-
Can anyone make a video of playing Battlefield 3? Or atleast a FRAPS benchmark?
Thanks! -
We can email it in as well? I didn't notice an email anywhere on the product registration notice email...
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Seems like you could, if your reseller provides your invoice in a format such as .PDF. I just printed mine, and sent it UPS with tracking.
-
I don't know what model you have, but I have the 095US GT780DXR. I ended up replacing my screen and noticed that the mic holes aren't punched out all the way through on the left side. They did however punch them out on the right side, which does not have the mic holes! I ended up using a needle to punch out a bunch of holes through the mic holes. It improved the mic quality a bit, but not a whole ton. You may have to go buy an external mic or headset w/ mic because that works well. I've been using my headset when needing a mic.
-
Yeah...seems like we should be able to, but I just never saw a return email to send it to. I'll probably just paper mail mine in.

I have several questions about this (GT780DXR-99US) machine:
1. I hear the drives are SATA III. So if I upgrade to a SSD 120GB OCZ Max IOPS, I should get the 550MB/s read and not the 280 something?
2. If I upgrade the drives, according to the youtube vidoes online, it appears the two drives are accessible, but how do you pull the drives out? It looks like the Sata interface is fixed. I assume it bends outward. Correct?
3. I also assume that the Raid 0 controller will get no additional performance out of the hard drives above 600MB/s (Sata III). Is this also true? Is SSD Raid above 600MB/s read possible?
4. Is it worth it to replace the generic 1333 Memory sticks with 1600?
Thanks in advance! -
1 - yes sata III. any ssd will be fast and you will not notice much difference between and one. The only place the sandforce controllers are faster is in benchmarks, not in real world user experience. Personally I would go with a Crucial M4 or an Intel for reliability reasons.
2 - The drives are right there when you open the back panel, 1 is secured with a rubber stopper only and the other with a small mounting bracket held in by 2 screws.
3 - With regular hdd's I thought the raid 0 was not much faster than a regular hdd. I can't speak for ssd's in raid 0, but a single one is fast. I can't really see how anything faster is better, when everything already opens instantaneously. But if you have the money, why not.
4 - Replacing the memory from 1333 to 1600 is a complete waste of money, there is absolutely no difference. The are numerous reviews of ram showing this. -
I've ask NVIDIA on Twitter for the lack of Verde drivers for 570M and I just got an answer :
-
Thanks!
Regarding #2, assuming the mounting bracket/rubber stopper is gone, do you disconnect the drives from the SATA interface while they are still parallel with the laptop, or do you angle the drive then disconnect it? -
They slide out parallel.
-
Cool. Thanks!
Another question:
I get the laptop. It has some bloatware on it, sure.
I reformat, reinstall Windows.
Do I need any special programs loaded to take advantage of the hardware?
Or should I just leave it 'naked'. -
Install the drivers from MSI Disk if the anything is not functioning correct...you should be good to go.. It only took 5 minutes to remove the bloatware so I didn't bother going through the whole process...lol
-
Thanks.
I want to go through this anyway since I don't want my system to be on Raid 0. -
Yes, it is compatible with sata III. If you get a sata III ssd, then you'll get "up to 550MB/s". Realistically, they'll probably run at lower speeds in general. You just take off the underside panel, unscrew the drive mount, and then unplug the hard drive. Assuming your secondary drive bay came with a drive, there will be a rubber stopper to secure the drive instead of screws and a bracket. I know the 099 model comes with a second hd so you can expect the rubber stopper to be there. In my opinion, Raid 0 does not improve performance all that much...at least not enough for me to use it. Both mechanical and ssd drives in raid 0 will give a marginal improvement in performance. With 1600 memory, it's the same. You'll abviously have a slight performance boost, but it won't be exponentially larger or anything. My setup is a non-raid configuration with a ssd as primary, and a 7.2k rpm drive.
-
You can get the drivers from Nvidia, Realtek, intel, etc for the most current or use the ones on the MSI website.
For the utilities, you need s-bar and the backlight keyboard utility for those to function, and VGA OC software if you want to the P1 button to OC the gpu. The rest you can check out and see if you want them or not. -
I installed the S-bar and the VGA OC software, but when I press the P1 it just pops up and asks me what app I want to associate with it. How do I get it to OC?
The VGA OC tool seems to run in my tray, but single or double clicking it doesn't do anything, but I can right click and exit if I want.
Also, if I run the MSI Afterburner tool and I set core clock / memory clock it SHOWS the clock speeds in GPU-Z, but it never actually goes over 550 / 1050 (as shown by the Afterburner tool log window). -
It should associate automatically. They both need to be running. Not sure about the difference between afterburner and gpu-z, mine shows the same.
