Honestly, I think you'll be fine with 12GB of memory because you probably won't use more than 8gigs unless you do a lot of video editing, etc. If you upgrade to 1600 ram, you probably won't see that much of a difference. It will be better, but not enough to justify upgrading in my opinion. If you still want to get 16gb of 1600, then I know Kingston Hyperx is very popular and reliable. I suggest upgrading the Wifi card and a router with dualband before you get to upgrading the memory.

Go ahead and shoot for a 128gb ssd because you'll see the most improvement from using a ssd as your primary boot drive. I only install my OS, updates, and some small applications on my primary, then install every other program on my secondary drive. The only con of this setup is that the programs on the secondary drive load at the speed of the 7.2k rpm drive. Everything else is lightning fast.

Thanks for the suggestion. Inspector 1.9.5.5 worked great!

I am looking forward to receiving my MSI GT780DX-215US early next week. Couple of questions:
    1. Purchased from xoticpc.com, does it come with any free games (not demos)?
    2. Do I need to do any updates for drivers, windows, or the bios when it arrives? Or are these already done? For instance, I have heard there are problems with the touchpad that can be fixed with driver updates.
    3. Is the touchpad all right for web surfing, emails, word processing, etc? I would use a real mouse of game pad for gaming.

    Thanks!

Yay, GenTech said they will ship by Monday my MSI GT780DXR-099us. I'm so excited, too bad midterms are coming up and I won't get to do much on it till exams are over :\ Their customer service is so friendly, not used to that these days.

Won't work! He can't use TDE or AfterBurner, because he has the barebones 1761 model...... ergo, he has to use nVidia Inspector. This is why they are discussing programing the P1 button for it's (nVidia Inspector) usage.

I was checking some settings in my BIOS and noticed my model number says MS-1761. I have a GT780R but apparently after updating to the latest BIOS it shows my model number as MS-1761. Everything still seems to work - Turbo - Afterburner but it does seem odd to me. Poor naming convention perhaps?

The BIOS update does bear the same name as barebone system but is located on the MSI site as an update for my model.

    I assume this normal. :nah:

    Hey guys,
    I got another question..
I will have 16GB RAM available. Has anyone turned off the windows paging file?
I know the Microsoft spiel about not turning it off, and yada yada, the world will explode, etc..

But I'm wondering if anyone has turned it off, and the world didn't explode/things ran well?

Your model number is correct for you notebook it would be 9S7-176112-xxx. This is the MSI part number 'xxx" would be the different versions. The "GT780R" is the market name of the notebook.

The DXR is a little bit more expensive, but has a GPU that is about 15% more powerful - thus it is better for gaming.

Doesn't the DXR also have better overclocking potential for its GPU? And it seems closer to a 20% increase in more recent games when it matters (between 30 and 60FPS).

You can (could?) find grossly underpriced 780Rs though, while the DXR is pricy (780DX is a good middle ground).

Touchpad has returned to its unresponsiveness, so basically, warranty was a waste of time.

Because it's not the Touchpad hardware that is bad. The drivers suck.

The second the touchpad would suck i would say "Screw you" and plug-in a mouse. Dont know if you can do this too, however the main point for me is the warranty. Saying it was a waste of time does not leave a good feeling, especially since its so expensive product. You should send it back again and see if they are going to be more responsible. Even use the "force of the word" to tell them things which make you assured they do their kind of job properly :)

Anyone else having issues with the touchpad? Seems I can even move the mouse across the screen without it suddenly shooting in the opposite direction I'm moving my finger. The touchpad really seems barely functional, not to mention highly irritating.

Mine works fine as well, but I mostly use it as a desktop replacement. I almost always have an external keyboard and mouse connected, if I'm using it at home. Since it's probably a driver problem, hopefully they come out with better drivers sooner than later.

Cooling and gaming capability are not issues with the gt780. First, I think the main difference is the GPU, but for gaming that is a big thing. The g73 has two cooling fans, but the gt780 has one cooling fan that cools just as good. Temps are very cool, and the single fan is very quiet at non-gaming speeds. I was playing the Witcher 2 for a couple hours a few days ago, and the highest temp recorded was 78C. At idle, it's been around 45C.

So really, there's no question that it's the MSI then? I'm going to be using whatever one I get for hours on end, quite intensively, so cooling was really my only concern, apart from which one was most powerful (and from what I gather, the MSI is the more powerful due to the GPU for gaming).

Yeah, having two cooling fans is a cool concept in the Asus, but only adds to noise levels. The MSI cooling design is pretty efficient in how it utilizes two exhaust vents using one fan. Honestly, it seems like the Asus cooling design should be way better, and that's why I'm so impressed with the MSI design.

Heat is not an issue at all... Turbo cooler takes care of everything.

Although touchpad might suck for extensive periods.. that's the only one bad thing for this laptop. Hopefully, drivers will get better.

Overall, Laptop is very solid I love using it daily not just for gaming. The 4 special buttons on the top left makes the DX awesome & different from the rest.

If you are concerned about cooling, you can upgrade the stock compound on the CPU/GPU. This can be done yourself or from your reseller for a small price ($30ish).

    Hey guys,

Tons of great info here. A couple quick questions -

I'm in the market for a good gaming laptop / desktop replacement (I'm sick of using desktops, I want something that I can game with at him and take with me when I travel) and so far i'm really loving the GT780DX (specifically - Newegg.com - MSI G Series GT780DXR-099US Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 17.3" 16GB Memory DDR3 1.5TB HDD 7200rpm Blu-Ray Burner NVIDIA Geforce GTX570M GDDR5)

    My questions are:

    1. My biggest concern is the GTX 570M - Do you guys think it has the power to run (hypotheticals, as they aren't released yet) Skyrim and BF3 smoothly at high settings?

    2. Assuming I buy it from Newegg, would you recommend the Newegg extended warranty? or is the MSI limited warranty sufficient?

    3. For those that already own 780DXR, are you pleased with it?

    Thanks!

1.Depend on your definition of smooth. If 30FPS+ then absolutely.
2.Unless you are very careless or have horrific luck otherwise MSI's is enough.

    1. Yes, it should get mid 30 fps on average. (hypothetically)

    2. MSI's is 2-3 years...and unless you are an absolute klutz, then F the newegg one :p.

    3. I'm very pleased with mine, especially with an SSD =).

is there a detailed gaming review of the gtx780dxr (gtx570m) somewhere? cant believe with 300+ pages there hasn't been one that worth linked in the front page...

I mean this machine is for gaming right? so whoever bought this must be a serious gamer or am I missing sth here.

Another forum member posted THIS, and did a short BF3 video with FRAPS. With all BF3 settings 'HIGH', his FPS was 30-35, and of course this would be even higher without FRAPS running in the background. Looks pretty darn smooth to me!

Also, I wouldn't bother with any third-party extented warranty from NewEgg. If you are a U.S. customer, MSI is offering an additional year, making the full MSI coverage 3 years. Read HERE for more info on this, and other features.

Am I happy with this notebook? Most definitely!

Let's not forget, this thread began with the GT780R (GTX 560M). The GTX 570M is still relatively new, recently making it's debut in the GT780DXR. It's so new, there is no officially recognized driver (only the MSI first release driver), and nVidia has yet to add it to it's Verde Driver Program.

No doubt, many gaming reviews are soon to come..... hang in there, and stay tuned!

1 - BF3 beta runs well at 1080p on mine, but I upgraded the proc and RAM. Don't bother upgrading the RAM if you don't upgrade the proc because the default proc can't take advantage of 1600 RAM.

2 - You probably want to buy from a reseller like GenTech or RK so you can customize your machine. The warranties are all the same.

3 - Seems like a really nice machine so far. Once you get it overclocked and stable, it will take whatever you can throw at it (at least as far as current gen games).

NOTE - As Striker mentioned, the stock drivers are from when dinosaurs roamed the earth. You'll want these drivers along with the hacked INF file here - http://laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/win7x64/285.38/disclaimer. If you try to start BF3 with the stock drivers, it refuses to even start and gives you a dialog box telling you to upgrade your drivers. I've played BF3 for hours on end with these drivers and had no issues. My overclock settings are screenshotted in an earlier post and playing with the fan button on I don't seem to go above 67C or 68C.

    Note to skrowl's note....

Regarding the drivers, this is true, but also consider the 570M will be supported and added to the Verde final release soon. With the 560M, this occured in a little over a month. I anticipate the 570M will be following suit, and you may even see this by the time you have your notebook 'in-hand'...... so also stay tuned HERE. NVIDIA also presently has a new beta released (285.38, and the 560M is supported), optimized specifically for BF3, so hopefully we (570M folks) will see this in the next Verde release as well.

Sadly, it's not a matter of just having faster drivers though. Battlefield 3 will not even start unless you're rolling 285.38 or newer.

If you want to play Battlefield 3, there is no other way to do it right now other than the hacked INF file.

That said, the hacked INF file drivers seem to be completely stable on my system. I've played 8-10 hours of League of Legends and probably 8 hours of Battlefield 3 on them and haven't had a single issue.

I know.... I got that..... all I am saying is soon the 570M will be supported, and there will not be a need to use modded .inf files to get new drivers to load..... that's all...... we're good. I was primarily suggesting dcfcblues also keep an eye on the nVidia driver download page.

    :)
