All those wondering about why Asus notebooks can't use the DDR-1600 so-dimms is to remember that Asus uses the HM65 chipset in their G series and the HM67 is needed for the DDR-1600 together with i7 2720QM/2760QM or higher CPUs.

Ivy Bridge and related HM75 and HM77 chipsets when they arrive should have better DDR-1600 memory support.

Well, that isn't really true. The ASUS G73 series and the ASUS G53 series will support DDR3/1600 and DDR3/1866.

It is just the ASUS G74 series that will not. It is a function of the BIOS on that series and ASUS is simply not willing to fix their BIOS.

I think XOTIC has it as optional memory in the customization of the G74SX.

@whatsthepoint: you do realize that page is for G53SX right?

Dude, G74 is here - To my not that big surprise, i see only 1333 RAMs. The other models support faster RAM. Thus here is your answer.

I would like to know more about the BIOS locking and memory support. Because i somewhat knew there might be some problems, and also due to the money saving, i chose 1333 standard. IMO, you dont need more.

I have 2x2, 1600 Ram on my Desktop ( see sig - have to log-in to OCN ) and it works fine, so here you go. If i would like to see a drastical difference, like i do, then next year when X79 16 cores Xeons and High-end non-reference Kepler cards come out, i will buy G.Skill RipjawX 4x4Gb of 2100mhz RAM for the Quad-channel X79 MoBo that will natively support it. Thats what i am call a drastical difference. Put some 2x 64/128 SSD in Raid 0, 3 2TB HDD in Raid 0 too...jeez....that will be fun next year as more ideas comes to my mind. So, again, here you go. Thats the diff between Laptopts and Desktops. Each to their own, right ;)

I personally would "Sacrifice" some of the Desktop "exclusive" things. I am talking about the ram, for example. Would never buy anything above 1333 unless its time-limited free upgrade, which is unlikely to happen.

Also guys, you might be interested in THIS - You can get 80% of the GTX580 performance. Yes, the desktop one. Yes, still can overclock, etc.

Here you go guys, those who wanted to stick 580M into this laptop, or even Kepler. I am buying SLI GTX680 next year. And i will always carry this one card with my laptop, until i get home and put it in SLI. Sweet, isnt it ?

Your drastic difference -- ~1-4% depending on your reference speed. Mobile CPU's will never be able to efficiently make use of fast RAM unlike overclockable desktops. RAID 0 only helps in load times, won't increase your FPS at all. Quad-Channel memory is another gimmick, memory bottlenecks don't exist anymore. It all sounds nice, but in reality most of these features are marketing tactics.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/418851-diy-egpu-experiences.html Whole thread devoted to eGPUs, it's been out for years now. A 580m GTX alone will cost you around $650-800 :p ouch.

I share the same opinion about the mobile cpus, hence the reason why i chose 1333 not anything higher.I know about eGPUS...I just wonder if it wouldnt be better to buy Thunderbolt if its due to be released in 2012. Also, i dont know if it will support the future GTX680. And yeah, the price of the GTX570 is really high. The top, especially. For that price you can buy GTX580 With waterblock :D

EDIT : I made a too fast conclusion and i jumped on the train with you Xonar. Not going to fight about it, but i found a reference, and many sources which provide an information about X79 QCH support and that it will enable a bandwith of 47.2 - That is much higher then what we have now.

Things like "This is the fastest card" while it might be not, or other similar stuff, yes. Those is simple marketing gimmick and i know people jumping on the rail waiting in the queue just to get one of those "fastest" cards. But things regarding the next generation hardware arent marekting gimmick. The only marketing cloud is now around Kepler. Will it be new architecture or re-branded 500 series ? Thats the only thing we enthusiast are wondering about. So no, in my opinion and from the tests and sources i found, things like QCH support, Native USB 3.0, PCI-E 3.0 and others are not marketing gimmick. Remember one thing. We NEVER fall for any marekting gimmick. We are too clever for that. Before i buy it, i´ll wait for tests. Thats how its done. Anyway, each have their own opinion, and the full rights to express it any any way shape or form. So here you go.

    Hi everybody

i just bought a msi gt 780 dx laptop, and my p1 touh is not working or randomly.

thus i can't activate the overcloking, the TDE, or any programm through the p1 configuration tool in the S bar.

Although, i remove then install again nvidia oc, msi afterburner and s bar programms, the p1 touch still isn't working.

Did I make any mistake ? Do you have any advise to fix p1 issues up ?

    Thank you !

Thanks but I downloaded the driver but it wouldn't install and the wireless doesn't work at all. I want also to do a clean installation of windows then install the drivers.

MrSeaBass thanks for the link but I downloaded the driver and installed it but still nothing. The wireless was definitely working because I used it yesterday. After that I used the MSI recovery disk, after that I couldn't use wireless.

    Thanks

Hi everyone I Just got my MSI GT780DX yesterday after a long wait here in the Netherlands, and am very pleased to say the least with not only the machine itself but with the outstanding service that was provided by my reseller gentechpc. Thanks Ken for your infinite patience and support with my questions and problems along the way. I have been watching a lot of posts over this thread the last month and have to say the information provided by this friendly community is just staggering and really awesome, even though I must admit i dont always understand everything, as my experience on the technical side of things is rather limited to say the least :D

As for the finer details of this machine I must say the sound is the best I have ever seen on any laptop, the matte screen is beautiful I will never go back to glossy after this, the aluminium finish is slick and sturdy, the windows key for me was extremely annoying very happy to see it on the right side of the keyboard, the keyboard itself is responsive well positioned, and the lighting stunning, the touch eject button for the dvd drive is also very much appreciated as I no longer accidentally press the eject button a million times by picking up the laptop and after testing my first game gothic 4 on maximum settings with not a single stutter, graphic tear or otherwise I am extremely happy with the GPU, and look forward to testing it further with more graphic intensive games.

The only issues I have at the moment is that when I start the MSI burn recovery program I get the message ( recovery files are missing the application cannot proceed ) I also get no responce from MSI afterburner when I click on it with the exception of it loading in the task bar...and finally if I leave my internet cable in the laptop and reboot the computer displays something about realtek PCIe GBE family controller series v2.35 client Mac addr and then finally DHCP..../ and after about 30 or more seconds goes to windows abd everything is normal again...but if I disconnect the cable the laptop boots up normally...

Probably the solution has already been mentioned somewhere on this thread but after searching over 200 posts already I havent found it yet.

would someone please give me some direction as to what i need to do to fix these problems.

Is the button turned on on the s-bar, to the right of the power button? Every once in a while i bump the button and turn it off on accident and feel like a dummy when I realize that it is turned off.

The boot order is messed up. Go into BIOS and make sure your HDD is before the realtek network driver.

    Make sure they're enabled.
Navigate to "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections"
And then see if the wireless card is disabled/enabled.

This is yet another fine example why a SIG with your system config is helpful. Unfortunately this is not the Psychic Network, and posting here doesn't magically give us that ability.

    Hi all,

I am looking at buying a GT780 and I have read through just about all of the posts here but I had a couple of questions I was hoping to get answers for.

Are the sellers listed on the first page of this thread (Thank you very much for putting all the info in one place) going to be offering the i7 2670 processor soon and if so is it going to be just another option for processors or is it going to be replacing the i7 2630 as an option? If it is a replacement for the 2630 will it increase the price point of this laptop. This might have been mentioned earlier but I may have missed it.

Does anyone have a link to a video or website detailing how the Steel Series keyboard work for the lighting and programing of the macros? I was curious if you could turn the lighting off on individual keys or is it just the gaming "WASD" keys that light up for gamers? I am left handed and have never used the "WASD" for any game if I can avoid it.

One of the main games I am playing right now is the MMO Rift and was wondering if anyone had any advice on settings for this game or how well this laptop works with that game.

    Thank you for your time.

Does MSI allow resellers to change settings within BIOS? So messed to lock up BIOS settings so that we owners are not allowed to play with our own god damn hardware. They give you overclocking software like the afterburner, but simple XMP settings, no siiiir.

    This gets me mad

thanks xonar for your help I did as you said and placed my configuration as such in the bios:
    1: hard disk 0
    2: hard disk 1
    3: DVD drive
    4: realtek

Now I no longer get the hanging realtek message during booting up the laptop.

However I still have the problem with MSI afterburner, and MSI burn recovery disk, any Idea's on those issues?

What gets me mad is the fact that they flash logos of "extreme edition" supported CPUs, but never mention you can't actually use it for its intended purpose -- overclocking (unlocked multiplier).

I was taken by the trick (bought an ES), but for any poor soul who spent $1,000 on a CPU just to find out the difference between his and the next lowest is 100mhz for $500 less, that really bothers me.

I have never experienced any of your other issues, perhaps someone else may be able to help.

    OUCH, that gotta suck :(
If I were you, I would ask for a complete refund. I mean, come on, you can`t advertise for some product that doesnt work fully as it is designed for. The only advantage the 2920XM have over 2820QM is like you said slightly higher clocks. Wow

BTW, did you buy the CPU yourself or was it through a reseller?

No, I bought an ES (Engineering Sample) off Ebay for $300. I also own a different notebook (MS-16F2), but same situation. Only the M18x is capable of actually overclocking an XM CPU.

There's no way to check without someone having done it first. I think I was one of the first to try it, plus I even unlocked the BIOS to check if it was just hidden.

Doesn't matter, like I said it doesn't bother me and I'm not singling out resellers or anything -- it's a common practice in the computer business world. I don't think it's right to advertise it 'supporting' XX CPU, without it actually being able to make use of all of XX CPU's features.

Which one's? AFAIK, the 170HM needs a BIOS patch to even support it, unlocking will do it just as much good as unlocking mine. I'm pretty sure Clevo took out all overclocking in their notebooks a long time ago because of too many problems associated to them.

yeah i read that they need to mod the bios for overclocking to work but at least they have that option hidden to bring it out in the open unlike us :(

And also for the CPU im getting a 2860QM and will sell my 2920XM soon, figure it still sell good on ebay :))

It's not about end users/resellers are allow or not to change BIOS. you can change anything in the BIOS of the features provided. you can't change the settings that the features are not even provided in the BIOS.

It's not just MSI, most laptop manufacturers does not provide many options in the BIOS unlike the desktop mainboard.

For the Afterburner, have you tried getting the version 2.2.0 Beta 8? If that doesn't work, what happen when you right-click on the icon in the system tray? And do you use MSI Nvidia OC?

So i took out my laptop today and unpacked it... it's awesome! What i wonder about now is the best way to go about getting a fresh install of it. I got MSI recov discs, but what i'm curious about is how to set up partitions, i got raid 0 active but my partition got messed up as i only made one large partition rather than one for windows and one for media, or can i somehow create new partitons without having to reinstall?

Actually, The scroll feature is disabled by default. Open the touhpad driver config from the control panel (Mouse options), and move through the options till you find the scrolling feature.

Partition sizes can be adjusted from within Windows..... just go into 'Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management'.

    Of course you can!
Right click computer i the start menu, then select manage. Then choose disk management. You now can see the partitions.
Shrink the main partition and create a new one.
