I just noticed today that NCIX has a new GT780DXR model listed. The MSI GT780DXR-279US. Says the processor is a 2670. I remember hearing that the 2630's will be upgraded to 2640 sometime soon but 2670? Could this be a typo and if not, what kind of performance improvement would we see with the i7 2670QM?

I believe your one's a typo... 2640 is a duel core form my memory, and I don't think people will want to 'upgrade' from 4 cores to 2 cores XP Apparently you don't get much more performance from i7 2670qm with 0.2Ghz increase while everything else remains the same?

In Turkey, MSI has already been selling this laptop with 2670qm processor for 15-20 days. Not many improvements, but better than nothing!

Hi everyone, i have had my GT780DX for a week or so now, not much time to do some test, but i dont even need it to be OCed to game, so im quite pleased with it...

I have a question, something funny happened to my laptop, when i first get it, the size of everything was set to 125%, and i changed it to 100%...

Everyone can see very clearly the text in this way? or it is a litlle blurry and too small??? I do this question because my letters where this way, but now, like a magic act, they are prefectly clear and crisp, dont know how to tell this, but is more or less that...

I actually have mine set to 130% because I like larger text, and especially on my larger external monitor. I did notice a slight decrease in text quality, but only before switching my ext. monitor input from analog to digital. After switching, the text wasn't as smooth textured. I ended up changing an option in windows 7 visial effects to automatically smooth out text. Now the text looks great, but I sometimes change the size back to 100% when using the notebook display.

That setting is cleartype iirc. And yeah i use it at 100%. it may bug your eyes at first but you will grow use to it and enjoy the extra screen estate in 1080P.

Is it possible to output sound in 5.1 for surround sound? I want to plug the laptop into my home entertainment system. But when I go into the playback devices menu from the taskbar, it only lists 2 speaker stereo as an option.

It's supported by the drivers and the Touchpad but it might not work due to the startup error.

Try to scroll on a webpage with two fingers like on a MacBook touchpad.

For the GT780, it should be able to support 5.1 audio. You plugged via HDMI right? For what I know, I didn't bother the config of the playback devices. But there should be a HDMI audio output as an option.

Try playing a 6 or 5 audio channel movie file. See if it works because it worked for me.

So I've had my GT780DXR-099US for a week now, and IT ROXXORZ!!!

So I have a question. Now that I've used it for a bit, and I'm more comfortable using it (and still sad that the built in mouse is intermittent ), I want to upgrade to a SSD drive for Windows 7 and certain choice games.

So I'm looking at getting a 256GB SSD.

    The question is:
Which reliable, high performance (I want more than 500GB/s if possible) SSD drive should I purchase??

    Second question:
When I get it, when I flip the laptop upside down (and void the warranty).. which physical slot do I put it in?? (Which one is bay 0?)

AFAIK, Bay one is the one that has the HDD with the label facing you. The other one should be sort of flipped. (You can only see the green PCB)

Most of the users (even me) will tell you go with crucial M4.
The price/quality/speed ratio is the best.

Yes, I used HDMI. Would you provide more details on your setup and connections? Are you sure you are getting 5.1 sound vs sounds coming from all speakers, not necessarily in 5.1? I am beginning to think that we need to use the colored 3.5 mm jacks on the left side of the laptop (green, pink, blue, white) to output 5.1.

Have any of you, that got WD scorpio black hdds, had any random clicking noises? I swapped my primary for a ssd, but kept the other 500GB hdd, which is a 5000BPKT. I was asking about it in the upgrades section and apparently it's a common problem among WD drives.

You can use either bay to put the ssd in, the boot option is in the bios.

hi everyone, i just ordered my GT780DX in Norway the model number is GT780DX-435,

and im wondering about two things. in this model its only one 750gb hdd and i want to use a SSD as OS disc.

    i bought a Crucial M4 128gb.

question nr 1: is it 6gbps cables in the laptop?

question nr 2: can i just plug in the hdd and boot the computer on first bootup and choose the ssd as OS disc? or do i need to start it up first, burn recovery discs, then format both discs and put the ssd where the 750gb disc is boot and run recovery from the cd's, and after bootup i put the second disc in for a media hdd?

    best regards

    Stig

    1. yes the 2 sata slots are SATA3 (6Gbps), the one on optical drive is SATA2.
    2. just plug it in either of the 2 slots.

You don't need a cable. You need the hdd bracket in case you don't have it to fix the ssd into its place (both bays are 6gbps on port 0 and port 1).
    I would advise you:
    1. to place the ssd in the hdd place,
    2. install OS on it,
    3. choose ssd in bios as the first to boot,
    4. place the hdd in the second bay,
    5. format/erase/delete whatever you want on the hdd

You may also leave the hdd in its place and put the ssd on the second bay because as I said both ports are 6 gbps.

    Regards!

I tried everything and couldn't get MSI's i-Charger to properly charge my ipad. so I used Asus' "AiCharger" utility and now it works fine on the first try. Go figure...

Thanks Asus for providing a working utility for MSI laptops :D

Did anyone here using a lapdesk / cooler for his laptop? So far I am using a big book to avoid burning on my laps... it's a bit heavy and not comfortable. I want to use the laptop on my laps...

I am looking for a cheap (<50$) but comfortable solution. I have seen plenty of brand on amazon/newegg but most of them are for small laptop and/or are not flat, or having the air intake below... I don't know if they are suitable for our big GT780.
    Advice will be appreciated ;)

    Thanks

You need a different heatsink, and it has to be custom made for the gt780 series. Since the 580m has a larger GPU surface area, the 560m heatsink doesn't come in contact with all the chips. Other than that, there's no reason why you couldn't use the 580m because the GPU isn't soldered onto the mobo. I'm not sure if the 570m has a similar heatsink to the 580m, but I'm guessing the 570 uses the same heatsink as the 560.

    Hello again,

I wanted to ask again about the i7 2670 CPU in the GT780. I got a reply from Wildcat11(Thank you) but just doing some random research i stumbled upon a page where it looks like I can get the 2670 in this laptop through Amazon Canada but it's not available in the US for whatever reason. Anyone know of any release date for for it in the US?

I would like to order this laptop soon and would hate to have them offer a better CPU right after I ordered it...

I am a student currently and see that most of the sellers on the front page offer student discounts of 3% or there abouts...any suggestions as to which one I should choose or is that verboten on the boards? (Sorry, still new here though I have been following this thread for quite a while)

I think most of the resellers are already offering a preorder of the 2670qm in the GT780 series laptops. I suggest going with Gentech or Powernotebooks. I've personally had good experiences with Ken at Gentech, and many others here have as well.

The Intel® i7-2670QM has not been released in MSI models yet, but should be shortly...within a couple of weeks or so.

Let's see.. Since I sold my GT780 already, I can't give you the exact details but I'll roughly explain to you how my connections were..

I will plug the laptop via HDMI which is connected to my projector.
Then, the projector will be connected to my monoblock amplifiers and sound processor via RCA cables.

And voila, a home theater system! It worked for me, my home theater utilises 3 speakers on the (left, center, right),2 on the rear and 1 as a subwoofer.

I'm sure I got the 5.1 audio, the sound travels from speaker to speaker depending on the scene =)
Eg : Bullet shoots from left to right, my front left speaker will have its sound travel to the front right speaker ;)

Since the projector has a DAC, I'm not sure if HDMI itself is able to emit the 5.1 sound effect, you could try, it would be less troublesome, don't you think so? Less wires dude, all-in-one! XD

A GE620DX model with a stock i7 2670QM appeared as the first MSI in the region where I'm working 2 days ago.

    It's available for purchase,not a pre-order.

Just about all MSI notebooks sold here are sold without an OS installed.

Only 1 year warranty here on MSI notebooks .

Hi, I am a new member on this forum, but I have lurked for quite a while.

Thanks to you guys that I could finalize my decision to buy GT780DXR-095US. Overall, I am quite pleased with it, as it has been 6 years since I treated myself to a new laptop.

Too bad though, I have one dead pixel on the right side of the screen, not enough dead pixels to claim my international warranty (need 7 dead pixels).

I find the laptop's THX Studio Pro sounds.. well like someone using high pass filter on the music, not that bad when using the built-in speakers, but definitely turn it off if you are using studio-quality headphones!

I have been using glossy display for 6 years, I hated the reflections, but I loved the clear display it offered to me. GT780DXR's screen looks pretty grainy when viewing images with bright colors.

What do you guys think if a glossy screen protector is used on the matte display? Will it hide the textured grainy appearance of the matte display?

I am deciding whether to replace the matte display with a glossy screen. In case if I decide to replace it, will I void my laptop's international warranty?

Yes, it is the same screen.

Welcome to the forum & CONGRATZ on your new GT780DXR!

As far as your singular pixel problem, try THIS!

I think most folks new to matte screens feel somewhat the same...... but once accustomed, actually begin to appreciate the matte screens benefits. Before spending the extra money, why not give the matte screen a little more time, and then see how you feel. Glossy screens tend to 'appear' more vibrant, but matte screen generally provide 'truer' colors. Try watching a Blu-Ray or two.....

Anyhow, good luck in your decision, and I think your warranty can be preserved..... especially if the work is done by one of our fine resellers here. For a list of resellers and more GT780 info, go HERE!

    :)

I can tell you that I love my glossy screen and I'm glad I switched from the matte. The external monitor I use with it is already matte, so I wanted to switch it up a bit with the glossy screen. It definitely is more vibrant, and I barely ever notice reflections unless on a very dark picture. I can't say that I disliked the matte screen, but I obviously like the glossy better. However, getting the glossy screen won't be that cheap. It's probably going to be over $200 shipped.

As for the stuck/dead pixel, I had a stuck pixel on my external monitor and used a rubbing method to "unstick" the pixel. I've had a couple on laptop screens, but have never had any luck getting those ones out.

I was curious about the driver support for the GTX570M so I sent a message to NVidia. After reviewing some system information I was sent the following message

"I've confirm that this device is currently not supported which you already know. The good news is the device is currently on the pending list to be added and should be available with the 290.xx driver release. I'm afraid the change won't make it into the up-coming 285.xx driver update which is targeted for next week, so you'll have to continue to modify the INF. I'll notify you as soon as a driver is available that will support your laptop. Again I suspect this will be in the 290.xx series which is targeted for end of November, beta may come sooner."

So there you go, in case anyone else was wondering.

Sounds kind of greedy of nvidia to release the hardware so early before they can even get official drivers out, but I guess it's good in some ways that we got to get the hardware early.

So, since there aren't any official drivers supporting the card yet, does that mean the graphics card doesn't work at all? or just at reduced a performance rate, similar to a chip that the driver supports? (I'm new to this so I really don't know lol)

Also, if anybody could give me an idea of things I should update/modify once I receive my baby, I would love that!
I'm currently waiting for my GT780DXR-099US to ship.
So far I've read about unlocking the scroll function on the touch pad...Anything else to optimize once I get it?

    Short list of components:
-Display: 17.3" FHD 16:9 Glossy Screen w/ 90% NTSC Color Gamut
    -Processor: i7-2630QM
-Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce GTX 570M 1,536MB
    -Ram: 16GB DDR3 1333MHz
-Primary Hard Drive: 120GB Intel 510 Series Solid State Drive
-Second Hard Drive: 500GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer
    -Optical Drive Bay: 6X Blu-Ray Writer/Reader
    -Wireless Network: Intel® Ultimate-N 6300
I requested a clean install to avoid bloatware.

    Thanks :D

There are official supporting drivers and you get a driver disc with them, but they are pretty old. You can still use the same official/beta drivers for the 560m/580m, but you have to use a modded inf file to include the 570m. There's not really anyway to tell if having official 570m drivers would increase performance because they obviously don't have any out yet. I'm currently using 285.27 beta drivers, as you can see in my sig., and easily installed them using a modded inf file from laptopvideo2go.com. I just think it's kind of unethical to release hardware, and not have updated (official) drivers available until months afterward. Oh well, I'm sure they'll be available sometime soon.
