This is just a shot in the dark.. but worth trying out:
    • Turn off Cinema Pro on S-BAR
    • Go to Nvidia Control Panel -> Adjust Desktop Color Settings -> 2. Choose how the color is set to: Use Nvidia Settings (try the default value, if it doesn't work, try changing the brightness, contrast, and gamma)
    • On Nvidia Control Panel -> Adjust image settings with preview -> Use my preference emphasizing: Quality
    • Still on Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D settings -> Global Settings -> scrolldown until you find Triple Buffering and Vertical Sync, turn them to ON / Force ON.

You do realize that everything, that displays on your screen, goes through the GPU, right? So, by that rationale, it wouldn't be your GPU either.

okay, since this is a notebook forum, then what is the issue? We've established it's not a driver issue, can't be a screen issue otherwise i'd see the lines during any dark scene or wallpaper, and we're suggesting it's not a gpu issue, then what else would cause these horizontal lines? i'm not using s-bar or cinema pro and I have tried all sorts of video settings and still, in games only mind you, I see the same horizontal lines as the video that was posted. They really aren't that noticable or a deal breaker for me, but I'm more concerned about the cause, not the symptom. And yes, Xault, I understand the video goes through the gpu, I was guessing that it was a specific process (games) that would cause the gpu to render these lines. Seeing as how the screen has no say in what is rendered, thats why I suggested gpu issue.

Well, have you tried hooking to an external monitor to check the lines are still there or not?
Is the problem similar in both fullscreen mode and windowed mode?
Is it only affecting D3D games? Have you tried OpenGL rendering?

We can't try our hands on your computer, so the best what we could do is to try to intuit the problem through step-by-step troubleshooting.

TheOnlyHutch...no one here is obligated to help you at all, so I would recommend being a bit more polite and detailed with your requests.

Have you contacted MSI support for help? They and your vendor are the only ones obligated to help you.

Viralite has asked some excellent questions to help isolate your issue. Please answer them carefully and in detail.

Also, in exactly which games are you seeing this issue?

Are there any games you have tried when you don't see it?

IMO, lines like that are hardware related 99% of the time, I wouldn't even screw with it more and RMA the notebook.

That's basically what I did when I saw subtle lines during gaming. It turned out that it was only on my external monitor because of previously stated VGA port instead of using HDMI. I never saw the lines in the notebook display, except in dungeon siege 3, as I said before.

Hutch, you see them in every game? Could you maybe take a screen shot of it so we can see exactly what they look like? I understand your frustration because we paid a good chunk of change for these machines. I also saw some lines whenever I had Vsync off, but they were a different type of lines.

Umm~ the whole point of Vsync is to get rid of those 'different type of lines' or otherwise called 'tearing'? That's perfectly normal.

I know, my point was that there are all kinds of lines that could be showing up and we'll never know what type of lines he's getting unless we get a screenshot or something. I never asked if it was normal or not....

I have a question, I noticed that lately my fan is running very loud, as soon as i turn the computer on the fan seems very loud i dont remember it being so loud before. also i noticed at start up the fan would turn on and off, on and off. it seems odd. right now all i have running is google chrome. and it sounds like im watching a youtube video or playing games, thats how loud it is. now is to a point that is just as loud or if not louder then my NZXT CRYO LX Aluminum Notebook Cooler. I posted a video on youtube, i dont know if that helps......here is the link

Do you think you can post a picture of the processes you're running? Go Ctrl+Shift+Esc, and then go to processes tab. Since turbo fan is not on, maybe open the back and clean out the fan and heatsink and also see if anything's blocking air intake?

G74 always have 3GB VRAM to begin with, only the best buy version comes with 2GB VRAM.

Can't really see the lines on your video, the attached picture is the actual defective screen with horizontal lines. the problem you are having more like graininess issue.

Nope, These are not the lines I'm having.
Watch closely( in 720p of course), you'll see some lines on dark backgrounds.
Also, try seeing the clearer version, in MAFIA II, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jBs4q64qv0

You can uncheck most bloatware that you are going to install, except the first three if I remember correctly, and you could easily wipe those things with CCleaner.

If you really want to do a clean install, don't use the recovery disc, because it also will force you to install bloatware on your system. You have to use your Windows 7 Installation CD to do a clean install.

Okey guys. BIG update. I got my laptop and everything is all right. The only problem i got so far, is that i cant plug in either D-link Xtreme router, or Laptop itself, since it uses US type of connector and not EU(CZ-czech). So i had to order two reductions, and for the laptop i will try to use a cable from a monitor. Hope it works :/

Other then that, all fine. I must say that our postal service sucks and so does the whole customs system and if i could i would disband the group of the id....No need to go angry, but the truth remains the same. They even asked to pay me some bucks for "giving you the package" and "checking this" or "..that"... Really sad nowadays. Going to test this machine and stress test it, do some benches etc. I have a surgery on Sunday, hopefully....so maybe if they allow me to do so, i could bring this monster there to steal their electricity xD They are going to get a juicy price check at the end of the month xD....

I came from a glossy screen and I much prefer this matte display. However there are plenty of options as to getting one with a glossy display. It's personal preference mostly. It is as good as any other matte I've used before, and excellent overall.

I recently purchased an MSI GT780DX and have a few questions about the system.

Firstly, the S Bar. Is it at all necessary? Other than the nice animation when pressing the touch sensitive buttons at the top of the laptop I can see no other purpose for it. I'm not a big fan of having the star on my desktop which opens up that menu.

Secondly, the P1 button. I downloaded the MSI Afterburner software and I can see that in the stock mode the P1 button is set up to raise the clock speed from 525 to 575mhz. I like the idea of being able to have 1 touch overclocking. Is there any way to retain this functionality but say, have the computer remain at 575mhz when P1 is off, and then when it is pressed for it to raise it to a higher amount that I determine? I realize I can set the P1 button to open afterburner and select the settings as I wish but I was just wondering if there was a way for it to function like stock but with clock speeds of my choosing for on/off?

Edit: Also wanted to ask which Nvidia drivers everyone is using at the moment? I noticed that the 570m isn't officially supported yet. Is it worth using the ones from laptopvideo2go over the stock ones at the moment? I know Battlefield 3 won't even launch without newer ones and I am anticipating playing it next week.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Awesome, that will surely save me a few quid if something goes wrong within the first year :)

Hmmm, I might just go with the matte screen, as it seems to be getting no real complaints and it'll save me about €150 :)
Glossy is nice of course, but my screen isn't even all that bright at full brightness, and the matte may be better on the old eyes!

I suppose I'll just see how it is, if it's not what I want to be using for the next few years, I might look into replacing the screen further down the line. But I'll probably be delighted with it no matter what :)

One more question for the Europeans: when you receive the power lead first, it usually comes in two parts; the one with the plug on it and the one with the power brick. Is it possible to just replace the bit with the plug on it with one from your native country? As most laptops use one of similar one which is easy to replace if damaged. Or will that mess up the power cable altogether?

Only a couple of months and I can play the Witcher 2 in good detail and more importantly... SKYRIM! :D

You newbies really should do some research in this thread before asking questions, or at the very least GOOGLE it will most likely come up with some links to NBR. Seriously, some of these questions are getting asked like over and over again. I don't mean to sound like an a$$, but it's really not that hard to find the answers to most of these questions. Just seems like people are being lazy.

Also, this isn't directed at anyone in particular....besides the newbies that keep asking questions that have been answered in this thread many times...

Dude, i am just typing from this laptop. I had to reduce the brightness to around 55%. The screen is really bright enough. Didnt test during gaming, downloading Warhammer Space Marine CE, Black Ops and Blak Ops MP as of now on Steam. Then get my Warhammer - Retribution CE and other game editions.

I watched Katy Perry ft. Kaney West- E.T. video and i was just OU MAI GAD. The quality of the matte screen is just way way too high.

I own a 24 inch Acer Matte, 120hz, 3D LCD monitor, so its not a big surprise to me, but the videos are somehow...zoomed...or...I cant explain it, but it really looks like its zoomed in, maybe other member might help me to correct me in this matter. Its just an only go for me. As i said. You did well for choosing matte screen. And try watching some vids on youtube :) you are going to be just amazed.

You have to buy reduction if thats what you mean. That is my case too. I have to buy standard US>EU(Czech) reduction. Right now i am on a CRT monitor cable xD and it works...but i want to use the proper equipment.

Just a question. It says the laptop isnt recharging, but no battery is used either. It sits at 98%. How do i enable it ? Any solution ?

    1. It is necessary to have S-BAR installed, in order to keep FN functionalities working properly.

    2. I don't think so, unless you get the barebone system. You could try flashing BIOS and V-BIOS, but irreversible failure may result in doing so.

Your edit question: Nvidia Forceware 285.- BETA with personally modified INF (you can use laptop2video INF too)

I think the power plug cable can be replaced, as it's 100v-240v input 50-60Hz, or alternatively you could use a cheap converter plug / an intercontinental adaptor to fit in the original plug (what I do).

Laptop will start charging if the battery level falls below 95%, it's engineered to do so, in order to preserve your battery lifecycles.

Thank you Viralite for the quick reply! I have left SBar installed, just exited it from the system tray and all the functions still seem to work minus the graphics that come along with pressing a button (eg Turbo On).

Also I know it must be annoying to have the same questions asked repeatedly. I did try a quick search, but with a thread of this size it is difficult to find specific answers sometimes.

Much appreciated for all the info, its unfortunate that it in't easy to edit the values of the overclock under the p1 button especially considering it currently "overclocks" it back up to stock 570m speeds!

    Ok Guys,

At my request the author of " Svet's VBIOS Tuner" (video HERE!), has graciously just completed a new version (0.56p) supporting the GTX 570M. This of course, did not come without considerable time and effort..... so if anyone is interested, stop by his thread, and show some love! Svet also says he will add other nVidia mobile GPU's if folks will show their interest and support his work.

I got my copy.... I'm happy!

    Enjoy!

I don't like the star-thingy program, but I did need the driver to get the cool button benefits.
Currently I do NOT have the star program, but I do have the MSIService.exe*32 running in the background.

Striker and i had this conversation recently about how people will come to forum and ask a question then sit there for 2-3 hours or maybe longer waiting for an answer when all they would have had to do is GOOGLE it and they could have not wasted 2 hours of they're life :D.

Also people think there is a little answer smurf waiting on every forum as soon as they ask a question :D.

But hey this is the internet so its all good :).

Perhaps we can generate an "official" MSI GT780R/GTX780DXR FAQ?? Once I get my laptop I will gladly help contribute to it, since I'm sure I have asked my fair share of dumb questions.

I think the Alienware guys already have the ability to do everything on the 580m though as i have been reading on them overvolting and undervolting etc etc.

    Much obliged, thanks :)

And xault, if the newbie comment was directed at me, I apologise for any noobish questions, I just want to make sure that I know as much about my future laptop as much as possible from people in this forum ;)

I'd much rather rely on you guys who really do know your stuff rather than google, which occasionally in it's infinite wisdom can sometimes still get something wrong :)

I've never bought a laptop from the US before so I want to get as much detail as possible so that something small (like a power cable :p ) doesn't cause any hiccups to my plan :)

Then again, point taken and I'll search the web before putting a question to the forum.

Also, Wildcat11, the FAQ sounds like a pretty good idea!

Ok well I'll don't have work next week in theory so I can put in some time to help build up an FAQ. What all should it cover, if at all possible please provide links. Admins/Mods if I am stepping on any toes here please feel free to PM me.

    So far I am thinking:

    • Modded Bios
    • P1 Button (exactly what it does/ how it works)
    • Matte vs Glossy Screen
    • Current List of drivers (stolen from front of this page)
    • Any reviews I can find
    • ?

Hmm~ you have 5x the number of processes compared to my laptop, but I use an ASUS laptop and I tend to shut down a lot of programs everytime I start it up.
I think that even more processes will appear if you click on the 'show process from all users.'
If it helps try shutting down each of the process and see if it stuffs up your laptop? The first time I did it I made a record of what can be shut and what cannot so now I can close everything very quickly.
I suggest that you can click on the tab above the Bruno column "the 'username' tab" and try closing rows that has Bruno.
In the future when you start up your laptop just go Del then Enter and press the down arrow to the next useless process. Takes only about 5 seconds to close 15 process for me
Oh and if it stuffs up your laptop, what I did was to force it shut using the power button and restart it XP

I would check with a mod before posting, because this thread is basically an FAQ for the notebook, just the specifics are inconveniently spread out over 300+ pages.

That's part of the problem... I've read the whole thread from beginning a couple of times trying to gather as much information as possible before ordering. I want to be ahead of the game as soon as it arrives. However, I can't remember where discussions on X feature or Y driver is located in this thread. It also doesn't help that the search function doesn't work, at least not for me but maybe that's due to my post count.

A FAQ might be nice. I know you guys are tired of the same old questions, so at least he came up with a constructive way of dealing with it.

I also have to give props to the OP, =$tR|k3r=-. Keeping the first post updated with all the information he has there must be a chore. Maybe someone else taking on the FAQ would make his life easier too.

    Just a thought.

So by using Svet's tool, when P1 is off the computer runs standard clocks and when you press p1 it runs those updated ones? This is exactly what I am looking for if this is the case.

    Very Nice Ken!

Quite the 'default' clocks, LOL! Soooooo..... how did you like the tool? Cool, huh?

PS: Did you show Svet some love, cause if you didn't, I'm going to have to do it for ya!

The tool allows you to tweak and mod the VBIOS..... rather than just an OC. For complete info, please link to his thread on the MSI forum, and watch the demo video. Nice tool, and Ken has just confirmed it NOW indeed supports the GTX 570M, and that it does it's job well. Nice work Svet!

I have also provided Svet's links in the lead post of this thread.

    :)

Yeah that's what it looks like that's the case. that means if you are not gaming and not using P1 Turbo then it's save with standard clock.

however, if you don't have NV OC tool running in the background I think it will always run at OC speed.

I really like his work and already made donation to his PayPal account, twice. :)

I'll try it little by little and didn't want to go too high at first, will show some more scores later tonight. :D

    I don't have a problem with a FAQ thread

If you do a good job on it ,I am sure we can talk -=$tR|k3r=- into linking it on the first page

Just a little bit of common sense:
Be careful with flashing V-BIOS, don't try it if you don't know what you are doing. :)

Note: Svet's VBIOS Tuner is a V-BIOS flashing software, proceed with caution.
