Agreed! Those temps are too high..... and if I recall correctly, MrShadowness was reporting unusually high temps early on. I am also wondering what his environmental ambient temps are like.... ???

Thank you for the replies about the VRAM and screen size!!!
-
hey guys, thank you for your response. u guys are so pro. hahahah..
well, I think MSI is quite a solid option for me now on. But for the gt780dx-215US and -099US, are the only differences on the RAM and blue ray dvd player? Is there anything else? Thanks! -
They all the same laptop, the only difference is the system configuration from MSI, some has more RAM and larger hard drive and different optical drive with different base price that's all.
You could get the -215US and configure it to have the same parts as the -099US, then there would be no difference at all in and out. -
You could get the cheaper one then upgrade later on (like me
)

The -215 is only a 'DX' model not 'DX R' like the -099. They have different BIOS too.

Any GT780 will support RAID 0.
All you need is the proper BIOS that can be downloaded at the MSI site, and two identical hard drives.
You will notice that all resellers that customize the GT780 offer RAID 0 on the -215. -
what is RAID 0 used for?
-
to form 2 separate but identical hard drives as a single one and double read/write speed in the process.

Hi guys, I am new here. I am really interested in getting a MSI GT780, but here in South Africa I am very limited with my choices.
My question is, what exactly is the difference between the GT780R and the GT780DXR?
Or better yet, what is the difference between this GT780R and this GT780DXR?
The only difference I see is about a $250 price difference, but everything else is exactly the same.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Edit: Ooops I just noticed the GFX Card is different. Well new question, is the GTX570 $250 better than the GTX560? -
!!! Remember to say it's not in USD lol... gave me a huge fright. I think the GTX570m is worth it

MSI offers 2 type of bios.
_____30B and _____10B
The one ending with 30B has a RAID option.
The one ending with 10B doesn't have a RAID option.
Any GT780 system can work with any of the two BIOS! I've tested it and I've had no problems at all. -

When I try to update my BIOS following these instructions I get an error saying: Unsupported 16-Bit application
the program or feature xxxx cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64 bit versions of windows. please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64 bit windows compatible version is available.

Hmm how about this?

If this does not help, try another USB stick. I have seen a few older USB sticks (though rare) that will produce this error on 64-Bit systems.
If you are using the latest version of UNetBootin, you should not be running into any 64-Bit compatibility issues. Here is some info on WIN 7 Compatibility Mode.

YOU NEED A FLASH DRIVE, AND BOOT DIRECTLY FROM DOS.
See the instructions posted by Striker. -
I think my main problem is that I'm getting lost inbetween steps 3 & 4.
I'm somewhat tech savvy, but have always been bad at flashing/ updating bios -
ugh, just realized my mistake, fixing it and trying again!

Thank you for your help ^.^ This is my first succesful bios update and now I can fully enjoy this kickass laptop! -

It's a good idea to install Windows 7 from a USB stick and the Intel RTS software v10.6.0.1001 f6flpy version from a second USB stick at the add driver screen of the installation right before the Windows 7 files get expanded and installed.
After the files are expanded and installed the computer will reboot for the 1st time.During this reboot remove both the USB sticks to prevent the installation starting from the beginning again after the reboot.
The Intel Chipset Installation Software is the 1st thing I install after my clean installation finishes.Version 9.2.3.1022 is the latest WHQL release.Netframework 4 goes in next.
If your computer has Windows 7 installed and activated you can save your activation information and apply it to the new clean installation using the Advanced Tokens Manager.

Well well well. My name is no longer correct...I'm so NOT bying the GT780DX. The reason? I live in Denmark and the only avaliable version in my couintry and the rest of Northern Europe, is withi7-2630qm, 750 hdd, bd drive, 16 gb slow slow ram, 120 gb ssd sata-300. I dont't need 16 gb ram, 8 is fine. I certainly don't want that crappy intel 320 ssd. I would like it without the ssd and put one in of my own choice, with sata-600, but here that isn,t an option. Then there's the price 15.000kr- 2830 dollars? What?. In the US this version costs 1899 dollars so that's 1.5 times more than in the US. And it should only be about 1,33 times more. If this is MSI's way of treating their North European customers, I'm never gonna be one of them...F*** MSI.
I have now built my own desktop and off course there's no parts in it, from MSI -

You should really contact MSI if this issue persists! -
I have a GT780DX-406US and noticed that a lot of site mention that this notebook have a 2 year warranty. I mailed in the documentation and see that my "warranty status" been updated to a limit warranty from my purchase date, however it is only 1 year from the purchase date. I thought this notebook has a 2 year warranty? Is this suppose to be correct? What is your warranty date?
the warranty is actually 2 years, did some research and email MSI. They got back to me and updated my warranty, so folks watch out on your warranty status on their warranty registration page.

Also in the next days we are ordering a special UPC package, its 120Mb/s down and 10Mb/s up internet connection + 80 TV channels for as low as 46 bucks. I will have to have this laptop here to test the connection, since its the only high-end working unit in here.
All in all, i rather wait and get the cooling pad, even id this one might be a little bit expensive, and see how it all turns out, rather then sending it back to US. Causes much more troubles then it solves. -
All right - time to dive in with both feet. I've read the whole thread, and I'll be getting a GT780 in a week from XoticPC, but I'm not a gamer. I'm an engineer who needs a fast laptop for some very computationaly intesive applications, and I have a few questions which haven't been thouroughly addressed yet.
I ordered it with the Core i7-2960XM Processor Extreme Edition. I did this because I would like to overclock the *processor* (I don't care about the video card), thinking that this would make my applications run faster. I am somewhat confused on how to do this, or if it is even possible at all.
1) I initially ordered the laptop with XOTIC PC's Redline Boost Extreme Performance option for an additional 45 bucks, thinking the processor overclock would be done for me, but Brett from XoticPC told me "Unfortunately, due to warranty concerns we are not able to overclock the CPU on these. It should still be possible if you would like to do that on your own with the Intel XTU software". So, their Redline Boost Extreme option *will only overclock the graphics card*, even if you ordered an XM version of the CPU.
Is this even possible to do with the stock BIOS, or does Brett not know what he's talking about? If not, did I just blow an extra grand on a proccesor for nothing?
2) If I need to unlock the BIOS, has anyone used the one on the following thread and had success with overclocking the processor?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/616823-comprehensive-msi-unlocked-bios-xmp-support-thread.html
3) I ordered the laptop with 8 gigs of 1866 DDR3. It seems that some on this site think that the GT780 will still use the RAM at 1333, and others claim the laptop will use it at the correct speed. So, did I just waste more money with XoticPC in getting the RAM upgrade?
4) If so, do I need to unlock the BIOS to take advantage of the 1866 RAM?
That's about it for now. Thanks for the help, and I don't mind being the guinea pig if anone has any new ideas on how to approach this -
-Dano- -
you cant overclock the CPU, its a waste of money to get the 2960XM. Not even with bios modification. You can overclock the graphic card all by yourself without fear of breaking warranty, there are plenty of tools available.

1. You have Intel XMP supported RAM modules AND the modded BIOS to enable these clocks. It does not have to be HyperX branded as well, for instance these are XMP ready and have been confirmed to run at 1600mhz with the unlocked BIOS. Check the newegg review, I believe that's decapitated_chicken who tried it with his GT780DXR.
2. You have PnP modules.
I tried installing and running XTU on my MS-16F2, but it won't work because it isn't supported in the BIOS, unlike the Clevo P170HM. Perhaps Brett was going off of it working on a Clevo, assuming it would work on the MSi too? No clue, but XTU certainly doesn't work on my notebook and the BIOS are pretty much identical. Perhaps someone in this thread could try and confirm this, but I'm pretty damn sure there isn't any BIOS support. Take a look here if your still confused about why XTU doesn't work.
2. Maybe you should read the threads to find out. The BIOS has already been unlocked for you, all you would need to do is flash it for XMP support. It's got over 300+ downloads (For the GT780), but no one has confirmed it working with me yet(I assume it does or else a thousand new members would be saying it didn't work).
The only real overclocking that is possible is through the BCLK ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/615041-overclocking-cpu-16f2-barebone-success-bios.html). As I said in that thread, OC'ing through the BCLK is a dead-end. The max you could up it is around ~4.5 mhz [If your lucky, I could never break 4mhz] (equating to roughly a ~120-150mhz CPU OC, depends on the CPU), but it OC's your RAM too. Systems with all RAM slots populated (like mine, especially with mismatching pairs) experience way more stability issues than a system with one or two sticks in it. Also, people with PnP 1866mhz sticks might have stability issues running their sticks past 1900mhz and have to run them at 1600mhz base. Another point, also because we cannot 'officially' change our TPL/TRL limits/ratios, an overclock might have little effect if your CPU is already at its TDP limit, therefore it throttles itself, negating the effects of the OC. In the event something goes wrong and you have to RMA your machine, I highly doubt a reseller will honor your warranty as you are flashing a non-MSi approved BIOS. Notice: Your notebook does not have the BCLK unlocked yet; these are based on my experiences with the 16-F2.
3. If you ordered "Kingston HyperX PnP 1866mhz" then it WILL work @ 1866mhz. See my explanation to the above poster.
4. No, same as 3.
Quick question, why are you considering the GT780? It really seems like you're overpaying for what you need. Wouldn't a business-class notebook with workstation-class graphics be more useful to you / less expensive? Just a thought, otherwise hope I covered all your questions. Sorry if there's too much jargon in there, but if you need me to clarify I'll try my best. -
To answer your question, I picked the GT780 for several reasons:
1) Even though my applications are for engineering and not gaming, there are some that require a reasonable amount of graphics processing horrsepower.
2) For overclocking, you can't beat the cooling solutions you'll find in gaming laptops. Although it now appears that my overclocking dreams are shattered.
3) I'm a laptop man, not a desktop man. I like the desktop-like features of gaming laptops, (big screen, fast processors, decent audio) and the 780 looked to be one of the better ones. Certainly for the price.
4) I enjoy a good game every now and again.

And it really is great RAM. Faster timings than Hyper-X actually. It's just not PnP so you will need the modded BIOS. And, also, I have the barebone, technically not the 780...
On another note, I was trying to see how hot my videocard would get if I didn't use the turbo-cooling button. I was going to kill it if it hit 95 degrees (while running furmark). But as soon as it hit 95, the computer shut down and when I turned it over, smoke was coming out :/ I fried the GPU. Thankfully, MSI had me send in just the card for replacement. All I had to do was pay $8 for UPS to ship it. It arrived there on Thursday and they still haven't shipped out the new one. I'm impatient. How hard is it to put a new 570M in a box and ship it to me? Grr. -
. You sent yours straight into MSi rather than through your reseller?
