After doing research on all the options (MSI, Alienware, Dell, Asus, HP, Toshiba, etc) for about a month and reading almost this entire thread, I'm biting the bullet and ordering a GT780DX-406US from gentechpc or xoticpc.

I just wanted to thank all the contributors here, because I was struggling to find a lot of information about this series of laptops until I found this forum.

I'll probably be placing my order tonight at one of those two resellers. My only hesitation comes from wondering if there will be any black friday deals at either site. It will kinda suck to order today and then see a great deal on either site for black friday :p

    Thanks again!

TDE is MSI's overclocking tool for the video card.
You turn it on, and the video card is performing better.

Afterburner is MSI's laptop overclocking tool. So you can modify your clock cycles using a sliding bar. This tool affects more than the video card.

So far, everything seems to be going well. I don't have any keyboard issues and the keyboard feels nice and solid. I'm missing my multimedia keys though; had them on my GT735.

Still haven't found away to keep the backlit keys off on boot. Suggestions?

Has anyone had problems with the 285.62 video driver crashing. I've had it happen twice today. It will recover approximately 3-5 seconds after it crashes, but it's a concern. Both times I was running itunes, and so far this is the only time it's happened.

I think it is safe to say the 570m has now been officialy included into nVidia's Verde driver program. Searching for drivers for the 570m now actually shows results! :)

Besides the 285.62's there is also a new beta driver listed, 285.79.

They can be found here: NVIDIA DRIVERS 285.79 BETA

Getting a M4 would be fine, but two would be over my budget, haha.. Furthermore, I can't survive with so little memory.. Crucial is very reliable too, right?

Wow, you can be a guru already, can I be your apprentice? XD
Great info you have right here! :)

Symmetrical or Asymmetrical is the same as synchronous and asynchronous right? Forgive my stupidity ^^"

It seems I have much to learn about SSD after you have specified all those details in your post, haha.

However, I do remember somewhere(I think OCZ site) that they always recommend their SSDs to maintain at least 20% of free space for optimum performance, this is something I'll practice for sure :)

Time to do more homework while waiting for the Intel 520 then ;)

Haha, but come to think of it, your timing isn't that bad, this beast right here was released this year and it seems to be the best of offer among many right now, don't you think? :)

    It's never too late ;)

If what you said is really true, I might consider a Crucial or a Samsung as I too, am under budget =/

    Nice! Thanks Dragon! :)

Hey Ken... Know anything about the rebate registration for the headset and mouse. The SKU for the GT780DXR-446US isn't listed yet. Heard anything from MSI as to when they'll list this SKU on the rebate form?

I experienced this GPU crash as well, same driver and I downloaded it from Nvidia website. Same thing it recovered after a few seconds of black screen, it happened while I was browsing using Chrome. No OC done yet.

I installed the latest Beta NVidia drivers (285.79) and they appear to have installed without problems. I'll keep monitoring the crash/recovery issue I had with the last drivers. Hopefully it won't show up with these drivers. In addition... figure I should mention that I did have a driver crash while just browsing the web, not running itunes.

Also, for those out there who want to disable the lights... I figured out that if you disable KLM from running at startup, the lights won't come on automatically. It appears that the toolbar button still activates the lights though, which is nice.

It's probably a moot point by now. When I registered they had a message that the rebate was only good for the first 100 customers to register for the rebate.

I bet they sell that many within a couple of days (or sooner), so this really hit me as a scam, having it run until 11/14. For them to only offer it to the first 100 customers just seems a ridiculous marketing ploy to sell more laptops.

Hey everyone. It's me. The guy who fried his videocard. MSI finally sent back a new one. They got in on the 27th of last month and the package was shipped yesterday. Two week turn around to throw a new component in a box? It was a little bit long of a wait, but at least there weren't any issues getting a replacement. They didn't give me new thermal pads, I noticed. But it was fine cuz I had kept the old ones. Other than that, I'm back in business. Finally.

Is there any way to make the screen dim more? I use my machine at night when everyone is asleep to catch up on daily paperwork and the screen is still so bright even when I have it dimmed to it's lowest setting.

Thanks! I notice that is just a beta maintenance release. Since I am not using anything affected by this beta (iTunes, WoW, etc.), I'll just wait for the next final release. I notice one individual complains he cannot connect to his unspecified router, without using the BigFoot Manager utility.

    Hey everybody!
Just want to let you guys know that those STUPID SAMSUNG DRIVES SOLD OUT IN A DAY ON NEWEGG (for the laptop upgrade kit).
Fortunately, I got one ordered from the Adorama just now.
    Sheesh! Selling like hotcakes already!

I think it's amazing that it's $429 AND it comes with Ghost 15 full version.
If these drives aren't crap, I expect Samsung to sell these things like crazy.

So probably about a week from tomorrow, I'll be installing the drive into my laptop.

Oddly enough, for us MSI Laptop owners with 2 drive bays, you don't really need the 'upgrade kit'. (So you could buy the desktop kit I guess). lol
    Silly consumers.

I don't use iTunes either but I do try all the drivers that come along for any of the hardware in my desktops or notebooks.

As for my Killer 1103 the best driver for me has been the 183 released on July 15th.

I've tried some Atheros drivers but they result in connecting lag when I click on my browser icons or bookmarked sites.

With this new beta driver I get much better speedtest.net scores on the 5ghz band for both up and down but while on the 2.4ghz band the upload score takes a 60% decrease while the download speed remained about the same as with previous driver versions.

In inSSIDer the 2.4ghz band shows a slight lose in signal strength while the 5ghz band is a bit stronger.

I have a ZyXEL NBG5715 450Mbps Simultanious Duel-Band Router and modemless out of the wall highspeed Internet

Do you know if MSI GT780DX works with:

    INTEL 320 SERIES 2.5" 120GB SSD SATA/300 MLC 25NM RESELLER ?

They are really cheap now in Sweden and I'd like to buy one.

    Any advice :)? <3

It would be nice if some admin posted a "How to install a SSD on the MSI GT780R/DXR" on the first page of this huge thread. Also, does it require a BIOS update? It would be very helpful, thank you.

Well it's fairly simple, you remove the bottom panel, take out the screw, remove the drive, take off the bracket, put it on the SSD and install it reversing the process.

You might want to contact your reseller about the warranty implications however.

"Remove the drive" ? What :p

I've no knowledge whatsoever in computers. I just thought it was removing the bottom panel > connect the cable to the SSD and gg?

Also, when I received my computer at my reseller, I asked them if it was okay to open the back of the laptop to put another harddrive in it.

He asked me that would remvoe the warranty.

Then I said "well why does it have dual HDDs but only 1 HDD in it if I can't add another one?"

He was like "oh...dual HDDs?" ....silent......"then I guess it's fine, however you should contact MSI to confirm it though....we're as private customer as you are".

And MSI hasn't even responded to the email I gave them 10 days ago.

You only do this if you have two HD in your laptop right now. If you only have one then there's nothing to remove, just add your new SSD to the open slot. I believe they are both SATA 3 so speed would be the same regardless of where you put it, but I think it would be better if you replace your existing drive with the SSD and put the normal HD to the open slot. This way the SSD would always be marked as the first drive.

As far as I know you won't void your warranty when you are just adding a new SSD/HD/RAM as long as you don't touch anything else. Some well known resellers here in the forum have verified this.

If you're not comfortable doing this, I suggest you let a professional do it for you just to ease your mind that you might have done something wrong.

hehe thanks, well I know the basics, the problem is that I get in the BIOS and set boot order as 1st SSD and then HDD, save, quit, but with no effect, it will try to boot it from the HDD.

Did anyone have to previously "update" their bios in order to use a SDD+HDD configuration?

    Thanks!

What do you mean it didn't work? Do you have Windows installed in both drive? Just covering the basics here, you should make sure you have installed Windows on the SSD drive for it to boot on Windows using the SSD. After installing Windows on the SSD you could delete the other installation on your HD.

What's your BIOS version right now? I'm on 30C and I'm using SSD+HD just fine.

You don't need BIOS update just to use SSD+HDD and there is no such requirement, like DropZite said make sure you install Windows on SSD.

Paragon's Migrate OS TO SSD works very well and is very simple to use but IMO a clean Windows 7 installation is much better in most cases.

I got m copy during one of the free giveaways.

A clean install is just that, clean. You get to install all the newest drivers, and utilities.

Uninstalling old drivers and utilities using only the programs built in uninstaller almost always leaves registry entries and file fragments behind.

A buildup of these fragments and registry entries can slow your units performance down over a period of time.

If you uninstall some things on a SSD it's good to then let the drive idle for about 30 minutes at some point for Trim to work it's magic.

Also on an SSD you need to keep about 20% free space.

When you receive a new notebook and driver CD most of the drivers and utilities are already outdated. That's not to say your new unit will perform poorly.

Driver and utility updates usually improve performance, fix bugs and add additional support for new products.

While this 320 series SSDs may be a good quality SSD it's restricted to SATA II speed and performance.

A new SATA III Samsung 830 series is a far better choice for a primary boot drive.

Today OCZ released pricing and specs for their Octane series SSDs with Indilinx controller.
OCZ Octane SSD Pricing And Specs Released - The SSD Review

The Octane will be available in capacities of 128, 256, 512 and 1TB and word just received from OCZ lists the 128GB at $199.99, 256GB at $369.99 and the 512GB at $879.99 with no set price for the 1TB Octane as of yet.

Still no more info on the Intel 520 series SSDs.The Nov.4th release date stated by VR-Zone came and went.

Just a quick note.. I have noticed a lot of artifact on the latest drivers. Even with just TDE on I was getting some black and white splotches on Bad Company 2 Vietnam. I turned TDE off and got a few less, but did say at least 2 or 3 splotches.

When using Afterburner at 650 I noticed a lot of artifact on the 3D Mark 11 score.

One thing to note that worries me is the fact that Open Hardware Monitor is showing that the max temp on the GPU was 75C and I was still seeing artifact. A bit..... disheartening.

BTW...There was some information earlier in this thread about laptop bags big enough to hold this beast. At work, I'm always being transferred from fire station to fire station. I needed a rather large backpack to hold enough stuff for a 72 hour shift. I've been using the Oakley Surf Pack 4.0 with my GT735 for a few years and it worked nicely. Luckily, the GT780 also fit into this pack rather nicely. It's a tighter fit, but it works.

The packs are rather expensive and I've only been able to find them on ebay as of late. If you get one... remember it must be the 4.0 version as the others will not fit this laptop.

Latest drivers? Are we talking the 285.62 release, or the new 285.79 beta? Also, did you do any testing with the initial 268.90 release drivers?

Hmmmm...... sounds like you may have a card issue there, and I would be a bit concerned too. I would get with Ken on this, because you should not be getting artifacts unless the card is being pushed near it's limits. Clearly with just TDE, this should not be the case.... not even close. I am perfectly stable at 710, and my max OC benchmarking temp was 72C. What were the exact system conditions you were seeing 75C? This has me wondering about the new 3GB cards...... ??? Hopefully this will prove to be an isolated case.

Good luck on this and keep us posted..... let us know how this pans out!

I'm using the 268.90 release. I haven't used any other drivers or as I just updated to the latest upon receiving my laptop. I'm going to do some more tests in the next few days with different drivers to see if I can replicate the problem.

Room temperature was around 70 F, system had just been restarted. I pushed the P1 button, saw the turbo engage, and launched BC2:Vietnam. Nothing was running in the background, and the 'turbo fan' was not engaged.

On a side note, I finally got BF3 yesterday and played a bit of the campaign today. I didn't see any artifact at all. i was running with TDE off an the turbo fan off as well. It ran nice and smooth, no noticeable FPS issues.

it is upgradable however do it at your own risk. Also from what bar-code reported, if you want a GTX 580M, look for one manufactured by Clevo, otherwise with Dell made one the card will throttle without solution.

Any of you guys that use Steam for your game purchases and gaming be aware that Steam was hacked a few days ago.

Valve Software's Gabe Newell has written an open letter confirming that the official Steam forums and their database were hacked over the weekend (Sunday, November 6th). Word is the intruder may have gained access to user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. Luckily, there's no evidence that the intruder took any encrypted credit card numbers or personal information. So everyone should be safe, but they still recommend keeping an eye on your credit card activity just in case. They also suggest changing your account password. You can read the full letter right here. Steam Users' Forums - Powered by vBulletin

FWIW, I put a 485m into my 683DXR to see if it would work. It's from a Sager 8170. Upon starting the computer, I got a black screen, and no video of any kind.

If the 580m has the Dell vbios, it may work??? Or it may work as is? All I know is the 485m with the Sager vbios didn't work. Different from the 580m, I know, but just thought I would put this out there anyway. :)

did you try it yourself or could you share the source? Much appreciated!

The 580M should definitely be considered now since its only $75 more than the 6990M recently. The problem is we have to find one for sale at such price (currently only available via Dell upgrade).

It seems there is a substantial performance increase when using the latest driver from Nvidia as opposed to the one offered on the MSI website when using DirectX 11. And not so much when tested on 3dmark Vantage.

Is my benchmark score normal or it's pretty low? Compared to the scores posted by James5 earlier, it seems my results are very low his 3dmark 11 scores are reaching 17000+ with a slightly higher overclock ofcourse.
