Tap over the holes and see if you get a decent reaction compared to tapping the other side.

The mic is to the left of the camera in the GT78x series models as seen in my attachment photos but I found the holes to the mic blocked by a piece of stuck on rectangle shaped plastic on the back of the LCD frame that can be peeled off.

I have no idea why it's even there.

You need to remove the frame around the LCD to do it.It's very easy to remove the frame.

Remove the stuck on screw covers at the bottom corners of the LCD frame.
    Remove the 2 screws
Place a thin plastic knife or guitar pick between the front part and the back part of the LCD housing.(attachment pix)
Start near the camera and open the top part, then separate by hand.
There's also some double sided tape holding the frame to the LCD panel.

With the plastic piece removed the Mic sound should be much better.

PIX #1 shows a white plastic knife separating the front of the LCD frame from the back.
PIX #2 shows the exposed mic with LCD frame removed.
PIX #3 shows the bak of the LCD frame with the stuck on plastic piece
PIX #4 shows the removed plastic piece

I got the gt780dx-277 last week and am wondering if anyone else has this issue with the keyboard.

It works perfectly fine typing but when on all white LED you can clearly see on the bottom rung of keys they have a purple and/or green instead of the white which is kind of ugly. You know its stuck on green cause if you make it yellow you get orange on some of the keys.

I thought this was a minor issue but still took it in to ask the retailer cause it was under 15 day direct replacement to ask what my options where. It was exchanged after I got a RMA but this one has the exact same issue.

I reformated and re-installed the drivers and its happening across all 3 zones of the keyboard so its not a software glitch.

Is it just a bad batch the retailer got or are all the keyboards like this?

Either way unless something else is wrong I'd feel ashamed to go back over a few incorrectly lite LED buttons.

I tries to make there a hole with scissors but thats the limit. I am just not beliving myself enough, especially since i am going to sell this laptop in the near future, so i dont want any kind of user-opening of the laptop to keep it all "factory" if you know what i mean. If this is the only way then i guess i will have to buy external mic. I heard that console commentators use Black Magic / Blue Yeti / Snowball mics.

The scissors are metal and will ding or scratch the soft plastic.

Believe me when I tell you how simple it is to remove the thin plasic frame around the LCD.

There's more chance of damage attempting to open the holes with a scissors or kneedle than there is to separate and remove the front frame by removing the 2 screws and using a thin plastic tool and leaving nothing with a tool mark.

This is how dealers add a 3rd antenna for Intel Ultimate N 6300 and Killer 1103 wireless cards.

If you want you can stick the plastic cover back over the mic holes before you sell it.

The glue on the plastic mic hole cover is a type that remains tacky.

From all your posts I thought you really wanted to fix your issue so I took mine apart again, investigated and made some pictures.

Oh well, maybe others with less fear and more confidence in their abilities will use the information.

I had the exact problem, the only solution I could find was to buy an external microphone.

So bad that they decided to make a gaming laptop's microphone so ty.

(Oh my gosh, me thinks someone has read absolutely nothing of this thread.)

The stock thermal compound is MX-2, and I seriously doubt " article silver" will offer any improvements. Some have opted to use the IC Diamond product, which has modestly lowered temps only by a few degrees C.

All things considered, this performance notebook runs very cool.

Your contributions here are to be commended, but sadly, not all can be helped and some are just doomed to spiral into the abyss. I predict soon you will be asking yourself, "Why do I bother", and "Whats The Point?"

I am having the exact same issue, a bunch of LEDs stuck in green. Likewise, I'm not going to RMA just because of that, but I have to say it's kind of annoying.

Gosh, me thinks someone is an a-hole! Thanks for answering.

Yes, I read tons of pages in this thread, did I read all 500, of course not. Try searching this thread for the terms "tim" "thermal paste" "mx-2" and it finds nothing. This board has a terrible search feature.

But thanks for scolding me dad!

Hey guys.. after reading most of these posts and conducting a few searches... this is my assumption (please correct me if I am wrong) The MSI GT780 comes with a default intel wireless card which I believe is 1x2... (Condor Peak). After reading it appears that the various sellers (that allow customizing) add the 3rd antenna to the laptop if you want the intel 6300 or bigfoot 3x3. Here is my concern.... I currently have an older Sager 8690 with an Intel 6300 and game on it without any issue... but I am updgrading to a new laptop but dont want to have a downgrade in connectivity. I am also limited to where I purchase my MSI GT780 as I have a substantial amount of funds in a gift card to newegg in which I plan on using for said laptop. Would I be correct in saying that the preconfigured laptop from newegg will have 2 antennas and it would be wise in going with an intel 6200 which I would install myself? I dont think I am up to installing a 3rd myself for the 3x3... thanks in advance for any advice/recommendations.

Well truth to be told, it's not intuitive for a newcomer that built-in search functionality is completely broken and thus they need to use Google. I stepped on that rake myself a while ago.

When a search returns no results, first thing you assume is that there are no results, not that the search is kaput :)

Have you tried using Junctions in Win7 to move some of the folders from zour OS drive(I assume it's on SSD) to other Data Disk? After an extensive search I found few folders on Win7 which just occupy space. For example the windows installer etc etc.

LOL! Well, supeg is not the first person to inquire on a topic that has been covered over, and over, and over again....... AND, it's certainly not the first time I've been called an "a-hole" for pointing out the ineptness or laziness. Isn't it funny how when these folks get their feelings hurt, they want to 'spin' things around with disparaging or insulting remarks. The claims are always the same...... they "read tons of pages (but not all of course)", and SEARCH features simply don't work.

Temps, stress testing, and thermal compounds are discussed throughout the thread. I believe the first discussion regarding themal paste began on page 5, and MX-2 is specifically mentioned on page 18...... but I guess the thread is a tough read for some.

The value of Google searching has also been mentioned here on several occasions, and a good portion of this thread's volume is comprised of repeat questions, repeat responses, and off-topic discussion.

Sorry, but many newcomers to the thread DO NOT take the time for due dilligence, rather most have an expectation of instant gratification. This becomes very monotonous and begins to weigh on the more 'informed' Owners.

It's very simple....... PLEASE at least make an honest effort prior to asking common questions...... Google & READ the thread first.

    :)

The wireless card (and driver) is only 1/3rd of the equation. The other two thirds are the wireless router you are using and the environmental factors (distance, obstructions, interference, etc.)

If the second two are bad, then moving to a better wireless card can make a big difference...it certainly did in my case.

I did that for Documents, VIdeos and such - data that you a) don't need rapid access to, and 2) would rather store on a more reliable drive.

Also, I put the Firefox profile folder onto a RAM disk, cause from my observations it does gazillions of reads/writes to its urlclassifier.sqlite database, which does not have to be persistent (i.e., it's OK that it dies on every restart).

Most of Windows OS folders are quite hard to move since the OS is very protective and locks them down.

...not to forget the most important factor - the ISP and its latency, which is most likely to be much higher that wireless latency anyway.

    hello,
i've tried to search this forum for my issue but couldn't find any help, so i'm making a new question about it :p

i own a GT780dxr and i was tired of having bad mic quality (i didn't know why back then) so i tought, lets update my audio drivers! sadly, i can't get my speakers to work ever since.. i can equip external headsets (with usb so onboard sound card) and digital output also worked i think.. but i just can't get my speakers to work! if i plug in a normal headphone, i also get sound.. so basically only my speakers don't seem to be working.. :(

i tried drivers from MSI site, realtek site, and some i found on here, nothing worked....

note: in my headphone jack (shared digital output, closest to usb entrance) i have a 3.5mm jack to optical connector that is kinda stuck in there... dunno if that matters...

    thank you in advanced!

edit: got it working again :D
posting here that i had this plug in my jack, i unplugged it (had to use siccors) and plugged it back in.. that fixed my problem.. it wasn't detecting the connector as a s/pdif connector but as a headphone :D

Yes that does matter. By default if it senses something in the headphone jack, it will turn off output to the laptop speakers. I'll poke around and see if I can find where that setting is....

Found it. Open your realtek options window by double clicking on the icon in the system tray (lower right corner). Then in the upper right corner of the window, you will see a link that says "Device Advanced Settings". Click this and the first option under playback device is to mute the speakers if you have something plugged in. Change that to the second setting (allow for the simultaneous output) and let us know how it works.

You can also move your "C:\Windows\Installer" folder. In your folder options you need to have show hidden and protected OS files. Restart in Safe mode and then copy using robocopy :
example "robocopy /copyall /mir /xj c:\Windows\Installer D:\WinSystemData\Installer" Make sure you do not have Installer directory created earlier in you D:\WinSystem (That I assume is your second data drive folder). And then create junction to this folder.
I am talking about Installer as it also takes Gigs of space atleast on my System.
In this way you can literaly move any folder you want. Also OS folders. Ofcourse you will need first to Boot using a Win7 bootable Disc and then move the folders using robocopy.
Make sure to take a Backup before you try anything.
And after moving don't forget to add the data drives folder which is used as Junction root to include in the system backup for safety reasons.
Well you can use "HardLinkShellExt_X64" utility as a junction creator application.
    Cheers

Yeah, it's doable but feels a bit dangerous, so am not doing it right now. I have 240Gb C: drive (2x120 RAID0), so I'm not that constrained in space.

One thing I would like to know is I us my laptop while laying down with it on my chest. This is no problem with with my Asus G73jw as it is very flat on the bottom. Has anyone tried using their Gt780 on there chest while laying down? Looks like there is ridges on the bottom of the laptop that may make this uncomfortable?

On the bottom of theGT780 series and most other notebooks is the intake for the air that cools the CPU and GPU.

You don't want to block the air intake.Without the air the notebook will fry.

Great point! I use a Zalman NC-2000 with my Sager NP9262 and have no heat issues when using the laptop on my lap. I've been using the cooler since I first got my first laptop in 2005 and I have no doubt it has prolonged the service life of all laptops that have bottom fed air intake.

Hope you don't mind me joining the discussion here. I recently put in for a pre order GT783. Time to upgrade!

WhatsThePoint, can you confirm that the GT78xx has intake and not exhaust on the bottom?

I can only guess that the GT783 case will be the same as the GT780 models since I am not privy to the info.

On the GT780DX there's 4 large air intake areas on the bottom and the warm air is exhausted out the left side near the back where the fan is located.

    My unit stays very cool.

I'll eventually add a 2nd SSD to replace the secondary HDD and then it will be even cooler.

So the gt783 is the gt780 but with gtx580m?

$1000 more gets you 5-10 more fps on a game that already plays smooth as butter on max settings.

The build I selected ended up pricing out about $250 from my GT780DXR config. I figured it was worth it since after the initial purchase I'm not one to shell out for a new video card. If time is any indicator like my NP9262, those 10 fps will matter one day hehe.

I chose an i7 2760QM, 16GB ddr3 1600mhz (in my research the 2670qm will not support ddr3 at 1600, but the 2760qm will). Decided that I didn't trust the transcend SSD so I reverted back to the WD 7200rpm drive. In the next few months I plan to purchase a Corsair Force Series GT 240gb SSD. Still out on that one.

I called GenTechPC and Ken was kind enough to walk me through some of the options. Glad I called!

Thanks, WhatsThePoint. I figured they were all intake vents as they should be. I've seen some odd combos before and ending up with a laptop that exhausts right into a cooler fan is rather counter productive hehe.

    Same problem with mine.....
When the backlit keyboard is set to White, a few of the lower keys are a purple or green shade....
It's like a little messed up if you ask me.....
Also when I put it on the lightest yellow shade, my left arrow key is almost pink....
Also when on the orange color the left arrow key is almost always a different shade then the rest of the keyboard.....a little off...
All the other colors seem to be fine for me.

Kinda annoying but I generally keep my laptop on red/blue/ or green.

The same here, It seems to be a common issue... But that does not bother me cuz most of the time I use the 3 color combination :D

I would personally recommend the Crucial M4 series of SSDs.

+1 to the Crucial M4. Not a single BSOD or hickup or anything of the like.

so its officially official =). Still doubt this 50 cards limited thing is real. Or maybe its a limit of a specific reseller. So my former MSI is now outdated =\

I like how the little graphic they use for the 580M card hovering in front of the notebook is a desktop AGP card silhouette.

Ok here's a question...where can I buy accessories for the gt780dxr? Specifically the AC adapter. I need a second one for work (so I don't have to carry it around). I'd rather not buy a knock-off and risk electrocuting my baby :) It wouldn't hurt to get a few references for the future, too.

    Thanks!
