As per Eurocom support and Mr. Donald it will not be a BGA

hahaha, You would have had the best of both worlds, SLI 1080, desktop CPU and a keyboard you will love. Add in some unlocked BIOS magic and you could rival or beat your P870DM3. Plus @Mr. Fox is going to show us what the F5 is fully capable of. I see us all a year from now, having a MSI Overclocker's Lounge.jaybee83, Papusan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this.

well if that happens, it would be much easier for me because I've already bought the most expensive components, those SSDs (check my sig)
so then I can order a barebone Tornado F7 or F12
but the HIDevolution version offcourse and slap my SSDs in

I think @Eurocom Support has decided there are plenty of places for people to purchase worthless BGA filth (like Walmart and Best Buy and Toys-R-Us) and they are going to completely phase that pathetic garbage out of the product line. I think their plan is to offer no form of BGA trashbooks whatsoever.

Since I am going to be taking this apart multiple times for firmware programming, I used some Kryonaut this time to avoid wasting IC Diamond or CLU. Kryonaut is easier to clean up. And... just as I already knew... Kryonaut sucks compared to IC Diamond. But, at least is will be extra easy to clean up when I tear it apart, LOL.
-
kryo is only crap if the heatsink isn't properly flat on the CPU/GPU die
ICD is just a crutch for resellers who don't want to deal with crooked heatsink -
This heat sink fits really well. I'm not liking the Kryonaut and I never have found it to be cooling good enough on any of my systems. But, it doesn't matter anyway. As soon as I am done with the repeated disassembling it will be having CLU on everything.

If the 17 inch SLI version is going to be made like this you're going to like it a lot. Very nice product. So far I am very impressed with it. It would not interest me even remotely if it was BGA though.Aroc, Papusan, Rage Set and 1 other person like this.

Would the 17 inch version have a chance against a DM3 without utilizing a vapour chamber but those small heatpipes like in the F5?
Gesendet von meinem SM-G928F mit Tapatalk -
That's a very good question and something to ponder when they do release the Tornado F7. Based off what I know about the MSI 16L and its sister the GT62, they share a lot. If MSI or rather Eurocom doesn't add in a vapor chamber, it's going to be toasty.
EDIT: I still place my money on the DM3. Nothing in the laptop industry can touch it but I do hope MSI pushes Clevo and that means, Clevo will have to do better. Competition is good for us all.
@Donald@HIDevolution Thanks for the correction!Last edited: Jan 28, 2017 -
Its all depends on the design.....
A good design without vapor chamber would beat a bad design with one. If you put in a lot of engineering time in the right place, you are gonna end up with a good product.Aroc, D2 Ultima, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
True, but they are going to have to put in some massive heatsinks on that because a LGA CPU is going to add a lot of heat into the equation. I also would like to add that MSI isn't likely going to put a lot of money into the R&D if we go by what they've done with the MSI 16L. I hope they do, however. What's the point in trying to challenge Clevo and have thermals ruin your chances.Aroc, bsch3r, Papusan and 1 other person like this.

If you are comparing delidded LGAs mounted baredie compared with some of the overclocked 6820hk, I dont think there is a massive difference.
Although a bigger fan should be more efficient I believe. Using smaller fans at higher RPMs produces a lot more noise I think.
LGAs are designed for something else completely than laptop applications. Its really shouldnt be used in laptop in the first place.Rage Set likes this. -
I don't think noise should be a factor and I am lucky to have a girlfriend that doesn't mind it. When I'm down in my computer den, it sounds like a rap/rock concert in the middle of a server room.
All I'm concerned about is the best cooling system that allows me to OC to the max. I have now put my purchase of the newest P870DM3 on hold until MSI shows their hand.Aroc, bsch3r, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Noise is an issue for a lot of people and fans arent efficient at max anyways.
Noise produced is energy thats wasted.
Either way, I am curious to see the MSI version of the P870DM3. Laptops like that are too impractical for me and dont offer enough performance to match a desktop but I am sure others would be very interested in it.
16L13 is the highest I am willing to go up to in terms of weight and thickness. I would even say the 16L13 is a bit too thick though the weight was decent.
Acer wasted a good opportunity to build a higher end machine than the current Clevos. imoLast edited: Jan 28, 2017Rage Set likes this. -

Agree... nothing else comes even close. The P870DM3 is my favorite laptop of all time and followed closely by the P870DM-G that I sold you. But, ONLY because of @Prema. If I could not have a his firmware I would not be interested. The stock Clevo firmware is too crippled and castrated to accept and the same can be said of this little Tornado F5. It is truly a sin and a crime the way OEMs ship their notebooks with such utter garbage for firmware.
-
Yes and that's when Phoenix's head is going to explode, especially if Clevo adds a new keyboard to it.

Speaking of firmware... this Tornado F5 is going to be forever changed for the better before I go to bed tonight. Brother @Prema gave me a nice 54th birthday present today, for which I am most grateful.
I am more concerned that his head is going to explode as soon as he discovers how crippled his insanely expensive turdbook is with a castrated and poorly-binned BGA trash CPU. -

Thanks, bro.
Spending some time with family for a little while and then I will retreat into my laboratory for the firmware magic. Having the BIOS socket right out in the open is so sweet.
Have you discovered the external EC reset feature on this notebook. There is a small hole in the corner of the bottom cover with an icon next to it. Straighten out a paper clip. Power off, unplug AC power and poke the paper clip through the hole and hold down the EC reset switch about 20 seconds and that resets the EC. Pretty slick.
I was also pleased to find out that the Dragon Center software works with it. Sadly, not built-in overclocking features, but nobody that has an unlocked BIOS needs it for that.
Thank you, too.
Astroturf always looks nice on television. -
Yup, the EC reset button was mentioned in the MSI 16L thread and it is a great feature. The latest DC doesn't work well with our machines but I have uninstalled it because it fights with you when you use Throttlestop/NvidiaInspector.Papusan and Donald@Paladin44 like this.

Nope. That was a special birthday present for me from my good friend @Prema. He is up to his armpits in work for Clevo BIOS mods, but he found time to do this for me as special favor/birthday present.
I will be testing a different BIOS mod for Tornado F5 owners.
I am also going to be experimenting with a chassis mod, which I will share more about if my efforts are successful. It will likely be a week or two before I have time to test my idea to see if it will work.Last edited: Jan 28, 2017 -
There is always Svet, but I agree, I'd pay for one directly from the master craftsman himself. Although, I think it is quite fitting since Mr. Fox's TF5 is going to be very unique and be the only one with an unlocked 1080 (unless I feel daring to do it). I feel sorry for us all, his machine is going to be in our nightmares as we try to keep up.Dr. AMK, Papusan, Donald@Paladin44 and 2 others like this.

Happy Belated Birthday wishes @Mr. Fox !!
Nice thread we have here, And that Gift Hehe, Invaluable and I believe that Prema's love infused magic will satisfy your endeavor for performance and productivity for your class of enthusiasts. This machine really refreshed a lot, hope the BGA abomination decimates soon enough in this Forum with more people steering towards the real Computers and Powerful machines. Also, Woah !! MSI's has an LGA MXM SLI machine & another 870DM3 successor from Clevo, I wish those 2 machines have a metal Exoskeleton chassis and more strong build with more Metal.
& Thank you.Dr. AMK, Papusan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
NVIDIA screwed the pooch with firmware protection, but using a bigger hammer should work. Clevo owners are faced with the same cancer-ware issue and manual programming is required. But, it appears that in-line flashing with the alligator clip is going to work... so, that's a plus if no soldering is going to be required.
-
Thank you, bro. I appreciate the kind words, very much.
Having some competition for Clevo is good for us all. Without it, they could easily lose sight of what is most important like 99.9% of their competition already has. But, I do find it a bit puzzling that MSI delivers a generic product that destroys their own name-branded products. I hope the success of the Tornado F5 provides them with a compelling incentive to improve their branded product line and knock it off with the BGA filth. -
