Type on a Clevo P370sm3, that keyboard was bad. I see many of these dual GPU Clevo with the same style keyboard, I'm guessing they are all bad.
I went from a p370sm3 to this F5, keyboard is a huge improvement.

ESC key is just relative to the mbp 15. Apple removed the ESC key for the touch bar. Like.. what? Developers need that unless you just retrain yourself to use a different key combination. But I have like 25 years of vi/vim esc key muscle memory.syscrusher and Huniken like this.

Hah.. that has zero to do with the keyboard though. Really any wide enough surface is a fine mousepad. I mean a perfectly flat and wide chair arm that's covered in ultra suede is a perfectly acceptable mouse pad. Arm sits flat, mouse has enough area to move.
-
Wait.. my feelings about the Steelseries keyboard are just relative to the two other keyboards I've been using for 3 years. I'm sure if I comparatively used some others I'd puke on it in 5 minutes. The steelseries is.. acceptable right now. But if you just throw the three of those keyboards in a ring and forget any other keyboard exists, it's not much of a contest. This is all my opinion though, so it doesn't apply to anyone else.Huniken and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

I wish MSI would just make a chicklet version of the GS83VR keyboard, less the numberpad. No cramped keys, no non-standard layouts. It would make switching between a laptop keyboard and desktop keyboard much easier.Aroc likes this. -

laptop keyboards, made of aluminium are my favorite. I think Alienware did that, but then they covered them in some velvetty substance.. rubber or wtvr. -

I think he was onto a good idea with the armchair mouse pads though. If only it would work latency free, work on any screen your on without hassle, and last forever on batteries to the point you need no wire or changing of them. Would be great. You can sit back and much more easily watch movies and netflix and stuff

It's a little better to use and to the touch.
It's not the best in the world but if you see some of the REAL trash tier keyboards out there on like $500 laptops... well. You wouldn't complain about these anymore
But yes I agree we could probably do with a better keyboard.UsmanKhan likes this. -
you need to download MacOS 10.12.4 from Mac App store frm within another mac. or download from internet in ".dmg" format if u dont have a Mac, but make sure only the version 10.12.4 will work with our laptop with graphics support.

Does anybody knows how I can remove the keyboard on this machine? Would like to swap from QWERTY to AZERTY...
Should I go from the bottom (remove MB and dismantled everything) or is there a simpler way?
As I will use my Sunday to work on it (repasting, ...) what are the right height (1mm,1.5mm, ?) for thermal PAD for CPU et GPU?
Thanks -
That I will now since the RAM sticks are on the other side!! Opening this beast up, wish me luck. Just about the battery, if I remove the cable for say 15 minutes then reconnect it, it should reset the Bios to defaults?

It is not possible to only replace the keyboard. You need to replace the upper case and keyboard. -
K, thanks

How it works. The keyboard is soldered with the upper plate? Do you now where can I buy it? @Frits@LaptopParts4Less

It's comical that there are so many opinions on this, including my own. I find absolutely nothing objectionable about the P870 keyboards. I think it is a very good keyboard. The SteelSeries keyboard on the 16L13 looks very nice and it works OK. I actually type better and faster, with fewer keystroke errors, on the P870 keyboard. If the SteelSeries keyboard had about 50% longer key travel I think I might like it a little more than the P870 keyboard. It's not as comfortable to type on for me.
I am not a fan of the short key travel. As I am typing on the TF5 keyboard now, every key "slams" to the bottom based on my typing style. I have spent many years using keyboards with deep key travel and I bottom out every keystroke on the chiclet keyboards. My wife has even noticed and asked why I am typing so hard when I am on the TF5. But, at the end of the day, I have found absolutely nothing objectionable about the keyboards on any of my Alienware, Clevo or my first and only (probably last) MSI notebook. I think they are all great keyboards and I would never recommend one over the other or tell anyone to avoid one of them on the basis of the keyboard.
I wish all of them had long key travel and tactile feel like my Corsair K95 RGB keyboard. That would be perfect.Last edited: Apr 15, 2017Aroc, syscrusher and Papusan like this. -
Do you have a link to the USB 3.1/TB3 adapter for the HDD?
I have two modded U3 coolers and that's a great idea. Both of the two 1TB Samsung SSDs inside of my P870 are almost full. I have a 3TB 2.5 inch SATA drive I'd like to mount to the U3 for that machine and get another one for the TF5's U3. I think I will mod the stock metal enclosures for the 3TB drives to make the adapter permanently mounted.
You use the same lap desk that I do. It's perfect in my recliner. I have machined aluminum mouse pads that sit nice and level on the arm of the recliner.Last edited: Apr 15, 2017 -

Mr. Fox's next laptop, an MSI GT83VR Titan SLI with a mechanical cherry keyboard
-
-
Nope. Mr. Fox probably will not have a "next laptop" and it sure as hell won't be any expensive BGA piece of feces. Maybe a cheap piece of trash from Walmart. I think I am done with the laptop nonsense. Time to go back to high end desktops. Killing all of the stupidity to make a laptop function correctly is too tedious and I'm sick of the bull crap.
The P870DM3 and TF5 will likely dominate all of the BGA filth for the next 3 to 5 years anyhow. Any BGA option would be a massive downgrade. MSI is not a good company when it comes to notebooks, IMHO. They should be ashamed of the trash they sell. It's really sad that the only product they sell that is worth a damn is this one truly amazing unbranded whitebook. If they were a good company, then the machines bearing their brand name would all have desktop Core i7 K processors in them and they would only use BGA filth in their low budget models. MSI is "part of the problem" like all of Clevos competitors, and until they get with the program and stop peddling BGA trashbooks, I cannot find it in my heart to show them an ounce of respect.Last edited: Apr 15, 2017 -
I dont have user experience with lower priced laptop keyboards, my only experience with that is testing some laptops out at the store, Frys, Best Buys, Walmart (barf). Lots of those are BAD!!! and/or trash.
-
The funny thing is I don't give a lot of thought to my keyboard and/or mouse. I have all of this high end components and I still only use a basic logitech k20 and the mouse is a logitech "gaming" mouse that cost me like $15. I don't know what is wrong with me. I can justify spending hundreds on a GPU but I can't on a keyboard or mouse.
dm477, hfm, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Amen to that. I have the one K95 RGB that I got refurbished for dirt cheap. That was a present to myself. My other keyboards are the low budget K120 and K270 and I have two M510 mice (all from Walmart, LOL). They all meet my expectations and leave nothing to be desired. I would consider myself nuts to have spent more than I have on these peripherals. Mice do not last long enough for me to justify spending much on them. I am constantly dropping or smashing them on accident, and the expensive ones break just as easily as the cheap ones. The M510 (new revision) is actually an excellent mouse for a very affordable price.
-
@Mr. Fox May be it is time for you reenter the waters of HEDT's. I love my MSI 16L13 and I do a bit on gaming on it, but my heart will always belong to the DT. The good thing is if you do come to DT, you will have two new platforms to use (AMD's X370/399 or Intel's X299) that will give you a few years of forward upgrades.

I think you might have hit the nail on the head. I tend to like longer key travel on keyboards with a standard design type like most desktop keyboards or something like exists on the GT80. I tend to like short key travel on island style keyboards as well the chassis and keyboard has to be extremely rigid with zero flex like the blade/mbp. I tend not to like longer key travel on island/chiclet type keyboards. I think what it is is that I think the steelseries key travel is a little longer than it should be. I also think the keys could stand to be just slightly larger area, talking millimeters. IMO if they ditched the numeric keypad from the steelseries and gave it just slightly more room and reduced the key travel it would be a tad nicer. I'm getting used to it slowly. I am kind of dreading going back and forth between the steelseries and mbp instead of the razer keyboard and mbp.
I also wish the windows key was on the left instead of the right on the steelseries.
Overall it's not a bad keyboard at all, just taking some time to adjust.Aroc, UsmanKhan, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Gracias, amigo!
Yes, I agree with most of that as well. I also do not like the Windows key on the right. That was kind of stupid, IMHO.
It can be difficult to adjust when you use multiple keyboards throughout the day, every day. I am constantly moving from one machine to the next, using 4 remarkably dissimilar keyboards.UsmanKhan and madeinholt like this. -
By the time I have the laptop and cooler stacked on top of the lap desk the screen is at a perfect height for when I am sunk into the sofa. I have offset my 'stack' to one side so there is just enough of the lap desk left for using the mouse, if not I use the sofa or the dog.
-
My first mod will be to remove the steelseries and put an apple desktop keyboard in it's place. (totally joking)Aroc, UsmanKhan, Rage Set and 1 other person like this.

I think so. I have been away from the desktop scene for too long, and now that the acceptable options in notebooks is down to only two models, both of which require extensive firmware and hardware modifications to be viewed as acceptable, I think it's time for the nonsense to end. It was fun while it lasted. My main concern now is the pile of trash that Micro$haft calls an operating system. That piece of feces has potential to drive the final nail in the coffin even for desktops. Those stupid bastards are out of control and they need to be pulled off of their high horse and beaten to the verge of death's door for their foolishness.Last edited: Apr 15, 2017

I just went to order another one of those and they no longer have the 3.1 type C listed! But that is the type/make I am using.
-
Before I had my current mouse I had a $5 Chinese "gaming" mouse for 3 years, bought it off ebay. It was very comfortable and useful, and only $5.
-
My point exactly! Supposedly the high end keyboards and mice give you a competitive edge in FPS but I never had an issue with my K/D ratios with a plain keyboard/mouse combo. I rather invest my money into the "heart" of the computer and a good monitor. I am looking for a new 1440p ultrawide monitor.
@Mr. Fox Your P870DM3 is an absolute monster but I have more headroom to explore.
