I downloaded SNES9X and ran megaman X and run just fine on battery for me. Memory clock at the minimum was 400 but no lag at all.
-
Try pcsx2, dolphin or retroarch. The mem clocks should not be dropping this low, you don't need to even run anything just get gpuz and go to sensors and unplug your power cord.
-
Ill give pcsx2 a shot, but if you are having issue with NES emulators, I'm afraid you got a bigger problem on your hands.
-
Playing old classics via retroarch, snes and jnester, etc run fine.
-
You mentioned in your earlier post that NES runs like crap, so I assume that was the case.
So those work just fine on battery and it is just 'newer' systems that lags?
EDIT: Getting PS2 emulator set up is going to take overnight, very slow downloads. I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes.
EDIT2: Unplugging the power, I do not observe memory clock dropping to 200Mhz. Stays around 400~600 Idle.Last edited: May 25, 2017 -
Thanks for taking the time to check. Clocks are still low compared to core, but your mem clock is double mine. I am on an older driver about 4 releases back, I will try updating.mizerab1e likes this.

You are welcome and love to help as much as I can. I'd be pretty distressed over it myself, since I know exactly what you mean from the experience I had with the last laptop. Kinda defeats the purpose of carrying a laptop if it has to be plugged in at all times, just to run something as trivial as emulators.leftsenseless likes this.

What's your BIOS/EC versions?
-
@rancid , just finished setting up pcsx2 and run Star Ocean and Final Fantasy X. Ran both on battery power and I can confidently report that there was zero issues. Clock rate had no issue going up to 3000Mhz and absolutely no lag anywhere that I can observe.

You are beyond awesome my friend. Looks like this is a "me" problem so I will have to go back to the drawing board.
-
Only too happy to help. If you don't mind, could you let us know your BIOS/EC version as Rage mentioned above, and if you tried flashing the newer vBIOS? I had couple of issues on this particular laptop with screen going black for few second during certain games and odd issues with slow framerate while playing in windowed mode (full screen was perfectly fine), but flashing the newer vBIOS + installing latest nVIDIA driver fixed all those issues for me. Perhaps it's worth a shot and only take couple of minutes to do.

BIOS 86.04.5B.00.47 for GPU
Laptop I am using a custom one by Savet E16L1D6.30C (had this issue too before the custom bios) using Forceware 381.78
@mizerab1e where are the updated vbios at? I saw the discussion earlier in this thread but never saw a link to download it.
*Quick edit - Just updated my drivers to the latest set and pcsx2 and Dolphin are still very slow on battery, but Nier and other A+ titles run at respectable frames. I am going to say it is something to do with the emulators/settings I am using within the programs themselves. If Nier can run on battery, any of these should be able to.Last edited: May 26, 2017leftsenseless likes this. -

I've switch from adaptive to static with an undervolt of 1.115 V. Everything seems stable, but I've noticed measured voltages through HWInfo are exceeding that limit. Are there other settings I should be adjusting?

try and limit the IccMax as well, try and lower the clocks a few multipliers too if that doesn't work.leftsenseless likes this. -
Will you do me a favor and upload this vBIOS for us? I haven't seen that 1070 vBIOS before and would like to try it out.

Where would be a good starting place for this setting? I've seen 300W. But my adjustment is measuring in amps. Am I multiplying my core voltage by the iccmax setting and aiming for 300W? -
woodzstack Alezka Computers , Official Clevo reseller.
try like 120 in IccMax for the cpu. see if that limits it. it's not very extreme, you could go as low as like 95 or even less....
-
leftsenseless Notebook Evangelist
I'm imagining you are giving me values in watts? The adjustment is asking for limiting amperage. Do I calculate based off of core voltage? -
woodzstack Alezka Computers , Official Clevo reseller.
I am not calculating anything to be honest, this is 'winging it" trial and error. Test it at inbetween settings like if your at 300 maybe test 200 and then 150 and 120 etc... see if they can complete a quick XTU bench and see if it makes a difference. -

if you have things you want to keep as in settings or programs installed etc.. since your last reboot, I would recommend rebooting, and doing this freshly afterwards. Incase you crash, you didn't lose anything.UsmanKhan and leftsenseless like this. -

I really appreciate your help, and I'm trying to be clear, but I'm not sure if your values are in amps or watts.UsmanKhan likes this. -

Oh the value I think is in Watts I meant the turbo boost and such limit that. Limit current as well. lime maybe your at 1000A or something or max, these are just tips. keep experimenting and see where makes the difference, this is how we all do it.
core voltage, Turbo boosts in Watts and current limit is in Ampheres, whichever is enabled on your system to affect, maybe all three, but you need at least 2 of them to fully control it. -
It's the standard vBIOS for 1080, not 1070.

Oh magical god of bios, where can I get the new latest vbios for the 1080?

Im interested in this laptop but is liquid metal necessary to keep temps below 70c on full load at 4.2 or 4.5ghz?
How well do gelid / icd7 / kryonaut perform ?
Also is it how much battery life does one get on Battery usage just light work word, pdf, youtube, online browsing.
@Mr. Fox whats that glass cloth tape brand or company could you post a link.Last edited: May 27, 2017 -

What cpu/gpu setup are you planning on going with? With the 7700k/1080 build things can heat up at max load. I've dumped 4.2 and have boosted to a permanent 4.7+, and while putting my system to task I'll see peaks just below 80 with averages in the 60s Celsius. Delidded with LM under the ihs. These processors can run 70s and 80s without problems. I do what I can to keep it below 80 C, and I've had great success using a modded cooling pad.Rage Set likes this. -
My friends, I present to you the setting that caused me hours of headaches with this laptop (found another thread here on NBR). If you happen to run anything like emulators or light games on battery, TURN THIS OFF! It is inside the Geforce experience hidden under the "games" tab. I set it to 60fps at first but decided I didn't want Nvidia managing anything for the battery and flicked it to off and all my issues went away. I also am seeing almost double the frames in Nier on the battery now and all emulators are running butter smooth.

I was thinking 1070 and 7700k. -
leftsenseless Notebook Evangelist
I'm not the most qualified to respond, so take what I say with a grain, but from what I've seen on these forums, the 1070 performs very well temperature wise. I would still push for delidding the 7700k as the heat pipes run across each other and the system can transfer heat between processors from what I have read.UsmanKhan likes this. -
The 7700K runs hot, no getting around that. I would advise you to go with a 6700K if you do not wish to delid the 7700K. If you have been following this thread, you would see that even with a delid, the 7700K can reach 85C+ quite easily depending on the task.
Personally, when I'm using the computer at work, I use a stock boost TS profile of 4.5 with a good undervolt. I still reach the low 70's on Silent fans.UsmanKhan likes this. -
Well, 'tragedy' has struck and my 150 has dramatically burned itself out. (There's a magnificent burn around the power plug socket...)
A quick question to those of you with experience of this kind of situation: I don't have any 'modern' computers that can take a SSHD, but the normal tool I have (Sata to USB) isn't picking anything up on the SSHD, where all my documents are kept.
Can a burnout like this destroy/cripple the drive?
It's a Seagate ST1000lm014 for reference.
Now I just have to order a new computer. -
I've replaced the control board on hard drives before where it has suffered damage similar to what you are describing and it did not impact the internal platters so I was able to recover my data. Not sure if the newer drives allow you to do this, but might be worth a shot to look. The older drives the control board was held in by 2 star screws, one on each side. See if you can pop off the board that powers up the drive and look on ebay for a replacement.UsmanKhan likes this.

Depending on how hot CL is, it may be worth it to consider adding the vents in the bottom panel that @Mr. Fox has shown to improve heat removal. It would be great to get NVidia certification on all screens (factory brightness control should be without question). Is there a way to get them to separate heatsinks/ pipes so the heat doesn't have a direct path of transfer between the cpu and gpu? Last, but not least, stronger internal fans. If you can get these improvements and offer them as aftermarket upgrades I think there are quite a few people here that would take them off of your hands. If you are truly listening, get MSI to dump their restrictive BIOS firmware.UsmanKhan, jaybee83, Mattsin and 1 other person like this. -

We are implementing modified bottom case as of early July. CFL has same thermal spec as Kaby Lake. We are also "pushing" Intel to launch delidded version of "K" CPUs so we can get CPU temps down "out of the box"

Hello, do you have any plans on upgrading the heatsink/radiator/fan combo? I do not doubt the research that must've went into the current design but I was curious if you ever thought about vapor chamber heatsinks, similar to the bigger 17" KM1.Huniken, UsmanKhan and leftsenseless like this.

It's your 'old' friend, Rage Set, here. Regardless of a refresh, the Tornado F5 is a very potent machine that's hampered by throttling in the OC'ing department. I am sure Mr. Fox has sent you a lot of data on what he has achieved with his Tornado F5 but we are still struggling with the 7700K throttling above 4.8Ghz. If you are going to use Coffee Lake, it's going to suffer the same fate as the current Tornado F5. Tell MSI to stop with the crappy EC's.
I wish there was one company that would listen and sell a DTR that is on the same level as a DT...meaning, allow us to test the thermal boundaries with our hardware, without artificial limits. If you must protect your bottle line, offer it with a limited warranty. -
God luck with this!!
Maybe rather push harder for solder instead of paste between Die-IHS. Would be a bigger chance for luck with that
Intel do exactly what fits them!!
Btw. You said earlier you working with Ryzen. How about that? Thanks

Finally flew back home from work to find this small brown box from FedEx waiting for me. Very plain looking and discreet, and well packaged. I've been using the used F5 for the last week so I was already familiar with laptop itself by this point, but this beast had a completely different specs and it became obvious it performed like it too.
This laptop has a 4K display, and GTX 1080 did a fantastic job making it look good during few games that I initially played. I thought G-Sync made an amazing difference in smoothness and was really impressed on the performance. However, within 10 minute of playing, laptop froze with GPU/PCH temp both around at 91C and observed same temperatures/crash during Firestrike Ultra stress testing. I was fortunate enough to be contacted by Zolton from HIDevolution for a different reason, who proceeded to help me look into the issue. After about 30 minutes of resetting BIOS, and reapplying configurations, we were able to prevent the crashes from happening (PCH temp never went up more than 65C from this point).
So that was last night, and I have been testing it pretty much non-stop, with about 4 hours of sleep between. The CPU temperatures during 4K games hover around 65~80C, which I'm extremely happy with, and GPU sits between 75~93C depending on the games. FF14 for example, I can almost max out every settings on 4K and have unbreakable 60FPS with GPU never going over 80C. Poorly optimized or AAA games do push these GPU to the limit, and GPU temp will fight itself going between 88~93C almost constantly on max fans.
So here are some benchmark results, with max fans and fanless laptop stand.
One thing I want to mention is that there seems to be a very noticeable yellow tint on the 4K display. I absolutely love the 4K display itself and how sharp/colorful everything looks, but it is extremely noticeable next to real white background (I used the ICC profile that I purchased with the order).
To wrap it up, I love this laptop. The amount of power this thing generates is amazing for a 15" laptop and it simply performs. Also, the fans are literally silent when you need it to, and small/light enough to fit in my messenger bag to carry around easily around airports (The power brick is HUGE though). The GPU temperature is definitely a concern during gaming on certain 4K titles, but in others, it crushes it without breaking 80C. The 7700K runs cool as a cucumber during gaming and definitely a pleasant surprise, but hard to tell how much is due to it being a SL binned CPU (However, I must note that CPU can easily hit 95~97C during AIDA64 stability test). Also, Bitspower finally shipped out a pair of SL IHS, as well as a demo Kaby Lake IHS, so I hope it will further assist with the thermals.
By the way, @Zoltan@HIDevolution , thank you for your help, really appreciate it.hfm, Huniken, Zoltan@zTecpc and 8 others like this. -

Just always working to make our products better and listening to good ideas. Thank you all of you guys and ladies for helping us with this. -
Exciting, well I would suggest moving the CMOS battery for easier access, defiantly some bios tweaking, and as others have mentioned we could do some cooling improvements, I think there's a wee bit more room for extra copper and stronger/bigger fans. Also in regards to the cooling, some perfectly flat and polished contact points on the heatsinks would be nice, I know all these things help just a few degrees here and there but they can all add up to make some nice improvements... Also yeah know.. if you guys need any testing you have us Canadians here more then happy to help

@Eurocom Support my wishlist:
-Better speakers (these do not get loud enough IMO) and I found the GT62VR ones better
-More USB ports and for the love of god please put at least one on the opposite side from the others or the back
-More powerful internal fans
-Better vented bottom panel
-Vapor cooled cpu/gpu heatsink
-4k 120-144hz panel (yeah I know, a pipe dream)
-Easier access to ram on back of mobo (remove keyboard like the Clevos perhaps?)
-Make sure to keep the thunderbolt/3.1 port for EGPUs
I love everything else about this laptopLast edited: May 27, 2017FrozenLord, Huniken, UsmanKhan and 4 others like this. -

Hi @Prema
I thought that the 1070 "86.04.5B.00.8A" Bios only change was it removed the "boost 2" clocks (e.g. the clocks that sometimes exceed the boost clocks?)
There was a change to the stock clocks also? I didn't see a difference in the stock clocks on the 7RE Titan's stock 1070 Bios and the 8A Bios.
How does this improve the "downclock" issue?
Thank you.UsmanKhan likes this. -

Thanks for taking the time to write your review, it is a beast of a laptop! As you said, your GPU temperatures are a bit worrying, being in the 90's when the GPU is constantly stressed (as opposed to the graphically undemanding games where it's not sitting at 100% load) - the reality is that as the years pass the default position will be that the GPU will be at 100% load the whole time as games become more graphically demanding in the future - this is why I think it would be a good idea to get a handle on those high GPU temperatures right from the word go (now). I'm wondering if the chassis & heatsink has the potential to cool a GTX 1080 that's constantly at 100% GPU load? There's the bottom case mod you can do to allow for improved air flow to the heatsink fans. There's also a repaste of the GPU with the best thermal paste you can find (Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut in my opinion if you don't want to go Liquid Metal). What are your thoughts on the GPU cooling, are you gonna do anything about it? I have no doubt that this laptop can adequately cool a GTX 1070, the GTX 1080 seems a bit more borderline at the moment.
