Thanks for the mention, but it looks like @Vasudev is the one with the right answers. Yes, I've got Linux dual-booting on here, but @Vasudev is ahead of me on getting the device drivers working fully.
Here's my two-monitor workstation that I built from kit parts. The main table is designed to be centered on the vertical column, but I wanted it offset, so I customized it in my workshop. (Only took about an hour, not difficult at all.) The small LED light bent over the monitor really helps when I need to work with a paper document, or just to reduce eyestrain because the room where I'm working is not well lit.
My laptop has the 4K screen, and the external monitor is 1080p, so it's fantastic for video editing at both resolutions. I use Lightworks as my NLE software, and the second monitor "just works", with Lightworks making really intelligent choices about what to put on which screen.
This setup is also fantastic for my Unity gamedev work, because I can dedicate one screen to the game under test. I also use the second monitor for holding Audacity when I'm recording a tutorial video for one of my gamedev projects, because that frees up the main screen entirely for screen capture using Bandicam.
This particular work table is also nice because that vertical column is hollow and has access holes so you can route power and network cables through it. I do a lot of large data transfers, so instead of wifi I use wired 1 Gbit Ethernet.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 9, 2017 -
You're using Linux Mint, correct? If you're using Killer cards then use Killer's KB article to get the wifi working. http://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/kb/cat/6-linux#faq_1
There are new FW for ath10k aka Killer 1525/1535 in this link. For me, Killer KB article fixed most issues with Killer cards on Linux. If you use TLP then remove power savings for wifi since it wrecks the wifi completely for example you get random disconnects, wifi instability etc. For now stick with linux firmware 1.164.x. You can download it from here https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware
1.164.2 has fixes for KRACK on some intel cards.
Also, you can calibrate your laptop for best performance and best battery life using Powertop, TLP and latest kernel 4.11/4.13.Last edited: Dec 12, 2017Killer_Networking and hmscott like this. -

The tool says my Intel ME is version 11.6.x, whereas the @Prema thread seems (?) to be suggesting that things will be smoother if I first upgrade the ME firmware to 11.7.x. I used Driver Booster to get the latest official Microsoft driver, which downloaded as 11.6.27. I checked the MSI download site, but what they're offering is from way back in 2016.
Any notion of where to get the latest ME driver for this machine? Thanks.
No, I use either Debian or Xubuntu depending on what I'm doing. (I'm booted into Windows right now, so working from memory as of a couple months ago, but I'm pretty sure my dual boot is Debian.)
The good news for me is that I now have a *really* good virtual Linux under VMware. The latest VMware Workstation, plus Ubuntu 17.x, now has very nice OpenGL graphics support, and I can run what I need to run for my Unity work in there. So no more dual booting, for the moment.
I still want to get into Linux native on this machine more, but I don't have the time to do it right now, and VMware is working much better in Ubuntu 17 than it did in Ubuntu 16 for my Unity work.
BTW, thanks for the tip on the Killer Ethernet, but I opted for the Intel wifi on my EVOC specifically to avoid Linux compatibility problems. My wired and wireless networks Just Worked under recent Linux.
Some good driver news: For several months, I've been having the issue that my headphone jack was nonfunctional. The line output and onboard speakers worked fine. My headphones, fortunately, are high enough impedance to basically work plugged into the line output, but the sound quality was not ideal.
Tonight I located a newer Realtek driver, specifically version 10.0.15063.502, and installed it. This has fixed the headphone jack for me!
I thought I'd pass this along in case anyone else has the same issue. I can't provide a download link because Driver Booster found it for me automagically.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 9, 2017 -
I use Xubuntu 16 too. If you have Creative sound blaster then use this package. But, secure boot must be disabled via mokutil. I have working headphone jack on alienware 15 r2 with creative SB Recon. With a bit of tweaking I enabled 24bit audio and linux uses 32bit audio because SB Recon does support 32bit audio, in Windows 10 PE I get 32bit audio 192kHz but on W10 stock OS, I'm restricted to 24 bit audio. For that custom driver https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-....status_filter=published&field.series_filter=
32bit audio is better and uses almost 0% CPU. The audio quality on laptop speaker is superb and on headphones, even at 20-30% my ear drums still has lot of thumps and echoes. On 100% the sound is too loud.
Use this link to enable higher audio quality https://r3dux.org/2013/12/how-to-enable-high-quality-audio-in-linux/
Only thing I'm missing is AW Command Center and if there's any alternative for that, i'll use Xubuntu full time. I can almost match Windows 10's battery life on Linux using iGPU and dGPU. iGPU gives consistent 7-8hrs+ with AlienFX turned ON with custom lighting and if I disable the lights I might get an hour.syscrusher likes this. -

None taken. I'm sure the overclock is VERY stable. I'm on 4.2Ghz. My FIrestrike scores at 4.9Ghz which yielded 19401 points were good, but to get past that to 20K @Falkentyne is really helping me with it. What irks me is those little bugs, what pisses me off is cancer firmware that won't let me have my stable 5.0Ghz OC. My journey is yet from over, only a matter of time. Sorry for being off-topic.
@Huniken What do you think about Crucial MX300 2.5" SATA drives of 275GB and 525GB? Will I notice drastic performance difference from 850 evo?
The thing is, I'm thinking of ordering 3-4 MX300 to upgrade HDDs of older lappies. I feel Samsung 850 EVO is quite expensive and also have a vibe that 860 EVO might be released. -
I don't have the 2.5" MX300, mine is the M.2 variant 1TB, using it as a media drive, the speeds when the drive is filled, it drops to 170MBPS and seeking time does increase a little like the 850 EVO they are Sata3 and have similar performance. NVMe 960 EVO is a different beast on its own, 4x faster than Sata3 drive per my experience.Vasudev likes this.
-
Hmm that means SATA 2.5" should fare much better than M.2 and reduced throttling. I could save 50-100$ by going crucial mx300. With OP'ing I could get away with good performance and those extra writes or TBW for crucial SSD will come in handy.Huniken likes this.

The 120hz screen, ultra bright as it is. I did try the driver roll back, but found that either it didn't work, or Windows 10 ignored my "don't update automatically" choice.Vasudev likes this.

I just installed it and I wanted to lap it but I just don't have the sandpaper so I figured i'd give it a shot the way it comes.. Seemed to have dropped my temps by 3~c or so.. nothing amazing but it did seem to help get rid of that hot spot in the middle of my keyboard (where the cpu is)..
I definitely do feel like the bitspower IHS has a bit of a concaveness to it.. Seems like a pretty decent addition to the system though for the price! At least you know you're making solid contact to the CPU now with this thing. -
You can use DDU to turn off the automatic driver detection for the GPU.Vasudev likes this.

Does anybody have this issue where the CPU won't go into C6/C7 idle state on Eurocom's latest BIOS? My CPU just idles at 1596mhz and won't drop any lower. When looking at what state the CPU is in, it's in C3 at idle (all apps are closed)..

Hi guys,
Thanks for the support so far, I have contacted to the right person regarding the unlocked bios
One more important issue here, if I make a wrong bios setup eg memory setting etc, what this computer does? Restart with default or needs to take out the bios battery? or what.
thanks a lot for the support!Vasudev likes this. -
and one more thing, anyone could also help with 1070 vbios. In full load it is around 60 degree, with some extra juice it could be overclocked well. thanks again!

Thanks for the link. I tried that, but my virus checker sounded off that the download was infected. It may have been a false positive, but I'm not taking any chances with a device driver. I'll try the alternate link from @Papusan. Appreciate the post, nonetheless, since you had no way of knowing there might be a problem. (And, again, it may be NOD32 showing a false positive, so I'm not leaping to conclusions.)Vasudev likes this. -

In the 15 years that I've been using NOD32, it never showed a false positive! If it says it's a virus, then dang right it is. I wouldn't touch any driver coming from Station Drivers with a 10 foot pole.
see latest false positive results: http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php?chart=chart6&year=2017&month=9&sort=0
ESET False Positives = ZERO! That should tell you enough -

The download worked fine for me and I use NOD32 as well.

I was partially correct and partially wrong. The virus warning I got wasn't actually for the *download*, it was for something that an ad on the same page as the download attempted to fetch. I run Adblock Plus which takes care of most of that, but some of the JavaScript-based ads get past even the best adblockers. When I rechecked and took the time to look more carefully, it was actually not the file itself that was the problem. Apparently sleazebag companies can still buy ads on otherwise-reputable web sites.
Sorry for the mixup. It took a review of my NOD32 log to pinpoint what really happened in detail. In any case, NOD32 did its job, so ++good on them.
EDIT: Based on the report from @saturnotaku, I went back to the page and tried again. I can confirm that NOD32 says the actual download archive is clean.Last edited: Dec 10, 2017hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

Privacy Badger detected 10 potential trackers on this page. These sliders let you control how Privacy Badger handles each one. You shouldn't need to adjust them unless something is broken.
