I'm looking to replace the battery in my Eurocom Tornado F5. It's served me well but the battery is clearly on its last legs, as being unplugged for more than a few minutes causes it to shut down immediately. I did a cursory search of this thread and didn't find the answer to the following questions, so any help would be appreciated:
Is the battery something I can replace myself? How involved would it be? Judging from a few comments, it sounds like it would basically involve a simple unplugging to detach the old and plug in / reattach the new one... is that about right? Would I be able to buy the battery direct from Eurocom, or should I source it elsewhere?
-
you can buy it on eBay

hey guys, iam an old f5 user been ~3 years using this now. so far it is working great aside from fans and battery.
But just yesterday my hdmi stop working. its not sending any signal atall. laptop wont detect anything connected to hdmi.
i have tried different monitor/ cables. even thunderbolt/miniDP to hdmi converter and i get nothing. i even installed fresh new windows/drivers. i dont have issue when using miniDP to DVI though.
Will appreciate if someone has any insight, thanks. -
hi guys, i have been using this F5 for over 2 years and one thing i like the most that it is relatively light and cool (even under high loads)..
I have tried for dual/triple boot with ubuntu and fedora/linux-mint/elementaryOS, but recently tried with hackintosh as well..
Some parts are not working for hackintosh, such as wifi, continuity, handoff, and the most important thing is the display backlight..
The backlight is working, but not properly (I can't adjust the intensity).. As a temporary solution, I have been using Brightness Slider app from AppStore to do the trick..
I also found out that the built-in display (in my case is FHD IPS 60Hz) is recognized as external display via display port..
So, I am wondering if anyone also has the same experience and how to make it internal? -
hi, i have use this laptop as hackintosh for about 1 year, unfortunately the issues you mentioned are not fixed as far as iknow.
for wifi it will not work you need to get a broadcom or any other compatible m.2, iam running BCM4352 which is around 30$? atleast when i bought it. continuity should work as far as i remember.
about the backlight issue, i started a thread over hackintosh forums, we tried alot of fixes including acpi hacks but none worked. it remained an issue for until sept 2018. iam not aware about any progress after that time tho. -
thanks so much for your reply and info.. finally found someone with similar parts for hackintosh, so i know now it is because of the hardware.. i will change the wifi for sure later..
as the last effort for the backlight issue, i actually tried this method from here: https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/t...ightness-control-nvidia-graphics-only-laptop/ , but it is still not working, so maybe i should just keep using the app then..
anyway, i hope your hdmi problem can be solved soon.. it's so strange that happens (even with the converter).. -
i remember trying that, did not work for me. tho i will want to try again if drivers ever release for catalina.
yea thanks, pretty weird issue, its like graphics card not detecting any signal if source is hdmi. tho its working fine on displayport so its not that big of a deal for me. -
Anyone else playing Gears 5 at the moment. I'm getting very unstable FPS (even at 1080p on high settings) and it's crashig quite a bit. (Graphics driver stops responding). I've seen people having the same kind of crashes over at the GeForce forums (I have the GTX 1080 model by the way).
Anyone else has this issue ? -
I'll reply myself here lol. The issue was the broken fan. Once replaced the game works like a charm !

What CPU are you running in your laptop?
-
Well my F5 finally died on me. 3 years of service and she is dead. It was running on a coffee table (battery removed) for a couple days. When I noticed it had turned off. I had just done a fresh install of Windows using a 1TB nvme 970 drive. All was good for a couple days. No issues that I had seen.
Unfortunately it won’t boot anymore. No life at all. When I plug in the power adapter the green light goes off immediately. I replaced the power adapter and same issue. I put the battery back in. I did a static charge dump. I reset the nvram by pulling the cmos battery. I cleared the EC. Remove the storage drive and tried each stick of ram in both bottom slots. I tried no ram.
I am now leaning towards someone in the house shut off the wall switch which killed the power immediately and killed the laptop. That or the dc jack is dead or a combo. Inspection of the laptop shows no immediately noticeable damage. I’m tearing it down now to see if I can see any damage. I just don’t see this beast as being worth fixing at this point. I’ll likely scrap it and sell off the individual parts.

Bad news
take it to an engineer to check if it is fixable, however if it is the board, there is no point having it fixed

Bad new indeed. I am planning on taking it to get it checked out. Since I was looking at getting a newer more portable device anyways I went ahead and ordered an open box unit for a pretty decent $1545 on Amazon. Specs in SIG. I really hope I like the unit. Unfortunately I've tried a few Turing thin and light laptops, but all of them have somewhat left me disappointed and that is mostly due to them all being Optimus based. I really despise Optimus and it's pretty large drawbacks. The stuttering, tearing and performance loss associated with a non-Gysnc or non pure dGPU laptop is just annoying to me. It's gotten better, but there still are just too many variables introduced with random hardware configs, Intel and Nvidia drivers needing to mate up to make a really great experience IMO. The replacement heading inbound on Monday while not perfect (flipped MOBO grrr!!!) ticks enough boxes on my must have list.
-
Seems that one of main powers VRM or MOSFET died, maybe in the GPU side as well not just on the motherboard. Pulling everything out (CPU, GPU, RAM, hard, battery..) and testing each by each you could find the issue.Talon likes this.
-
The ram works, using it in my new machine as I type. The CPU is DED dead. In fact the MOFO killed my cherry 9900K as well when trouble shooting. Thankfully that wasn't delidded and Intel is refunding me over $600 and I'll either go 9900KS or really thinking about going 10980XE build. Will see. Regardless I refuse to do any further testing on my F5 at this point. I am going to sell off the GPU, fans, battery, screens, etc. The motherboard to me is a lost cause honestly. It's sad, but it's time I feel.IllusiveMan likes this.

Sad for 9900k...
19V through it and it's dead...
RAMs are good, I have the same ones, screen as well is nice.Talon likes this. -
19v is what went through it? Jesus no wonder..
-
Yes if the CPU is dead as you said. Usually if some VRM from 19.5V rail fails then the low voltage consumer eats those 19.5v from the power source.
-
Hey Talon. Can you please tell me if the audio board ( MS-16L12 ) from your Tornado is still alive ? And how much will you sell it for ? I attach the photo below
-
Please someone with samsung 4k panel can give me the color setting for the nvidia panel?
-
Hey there,
just wanted to let you know that disabling Thunderbolt 3 in the BIOS is a really bad idea!
Even though it is just set to Disabled (enabled is default), there will no longer be any output to the display.
When I tested doing a blind BIOS reset - i.e. pressing DEL -> F9 -> Left -> Enter - nothing happened.
Plugging an external monitor into the HDMI port did not show any output either.
The only way to revive my F5 was unplugging the CMOS battery and giving it some time...
And just in case you want to fiddle around some more, SVET's VBIOS and EC Tuner is able to mod the EC firmware of our Tornado F5.

This is especially nice if you want to mod the default fan curves.

Terrible news. My MSI 16L3 seems to be dead. It was tuned on, I had a meeting, when I got back it was already turned off. 'I thought that it's sleep mode although I disabled it. When I tried to power it on, keyboard light flashed for around 0.2s, that's all. Power charger green light diode was gone, but cable was in. When I reconnected power charger cable, diode was on, but computer behaviour remained unchanged. I hear faint clicking when it turns off. When I removed CPU from the socket something interesting happend. Keyboard light remained on after turning it on without CPU. When I put CPU back into the socket, light flashed as before. I'm going to look for some 8-gen compatible MB to check if CPU is alive. If it's not, I will be scared to try any different CPU in that socket. If it will be alive, however, I'll try replacing it with some emergency 6 or 7 gen cpu.

Do CMOS reset and see if it helps. It does look like motherboard-related issue but not processor.mat89 likes this. -
Somehow it's strange. What could be causing the breakdown ? Talon recently had a similar situation. It starts to seem to me that a new generation of processors is killing this motherboard...Talon, mat89 and Kevin@GenTechPC like this.

This isn't because of Thunderbolt 3 being disabled. It's related to the same bug which caused black screens on the GT73VR when switching from dGPU to iGPU to dGPU.
Changing PEG root slot 0 (or whatever the first PEG Port is set to, I forgot) under System Agent/PEG options, from "Auto" to "Enabled" will stop this bug from happening.FrozenLord and Kevin@GenTechPC like this. -
I tried CMOS reset, disconnecting almost every part, tried different pressures on screws on the socket. Nothing helped. Rest In Pepperoni, I suppose. Now I have to look for some replacement.. That might be the case that 8700K mod is somewhat dangerous. I still have to test if CPU is alive.

Might had been motherboard since it's rare for processor to fail, but it's going to require some efforts to validate each component though. -
Today and tomorrow I'm going to check motherboard, check voltages on each component with tools.

@Jan Prochnica @UsmanKhan you're guys few that succeed with Hackintosh on this thing.
I have few questions to you.
1. Is it possible to install newest macOS catalina? Or am i tied to High Sierrra?
2. What is not working besides Wi-Fi module?
3. I saw that geforce graphic is working. How performance is looking? Is it same as Windows?
4. Is it same procedure as usually Hackintosh - for example this https://hackintosher.com/guides/high-sierra-install-full-guide/
5. How you control keyboard RGB or fans in macOS?Last edited: Dec 16, 2019 -
Update: My CPU VRMs and diodes are officially dead. I will try to replace them. Still I don't know for sure if 8th-gen mod was contributing to the problem, but I recommend caution.
@Rahego
> 1. Is it possible to install newest macOS catalina? Or am i tied to Hackintosh 10.13.4?
I stopped at High Sierra. I think there are problems with lacking nVidia drivers on more recent macOS
> 2. What is not working besides Wi-Fi module?
Fan control and RGB control. I also had some sound configuration difficulties, but in the end I managed to configure it. And I haven't tried sleep/hibernation. I tried some other WiFi card, DW1830, and it worked, but performance was really poor with 2 antennas
> 3. I saw that geforce graphic is working. How performance is looking? Is it same as Windows?
It was excellent! I used Unreal Engine 4 on it. Performance is comparable to Windows, but I don't have any precise numbers unfortunately
> 4. Is it same procedure as usually Hackintosh - for example this https://hackintosher.com/guides/high-sierra-install-full-guide/
It's mostly the same. I had to play around sound with kext and Clover settings to get it right

Nope, I didn't manage to control it -

Did you leave them uncooled even after upgrading to Coffee Lake?mat89 likes this. -
Correct.

At what frequencies did the processor work under loads ?

Sounds like your F5 went kaput in a similar fashion to my F5. I ran my F5 with an 8700K for over a year before I had issue. Earlier that week I had been using mine for some light benching and may have just pushed too far on the overall system or something. Unfortunately I don't really know. The F5 was well over 3 years old at the time so it's extremely possible it was just time for it to go. My 8700K was fried by the F5, as was my cherry 9900K that I used for trouble shooting. After that I decided to just put the F5 off to the side in the closet. Luckily Intel replaced my 9900K with a refund. The memory modules were fine, the GPU I suspect is also fine, but the motherboard is toast. I could try and get a new board but I doubt it would be worth the troubles.Huniken, mat89 and Kevin@GenTechPC like this.

I think it's more than coincidence that both you and @Talon had your CPU VRMs die after upgrading to Coffee Lake. My guess is death caused by prolonged high VRM temps, especially if you were overclocking and using IMON tweaks to bypass the 95W TDP limit. I think it's pretty poor design to leave VRMs uncooled like that, and they probably never intended for long-term use with a CPU with 50% more cores or a >95W power draw.mat89 likes this. -
From what I can remember. Some measured VRM temps with good results. Maybe bro @Mr. Fox but cant remember exactly who it was.Huniken, Kevin@GenTechPC and mat89 like this.

Lately, nothing exceptionally high, 4.5Ghz daily. I wasn't pushing it too far recently because I was working on a mobile game recently. Previously I did some benching, highest clock I achieved was 4.8Ghz.
Maybe it's just an unfortunate event, some static shock, because in my office there is this terrible carpet.. I'll check my 8700K today, I have access to combatibile mobo.
I played with IMON when benching. Daily I changed only LoadLine Callibration to achieve more stable undervolt. I kept TDP below 90W most of the time, it exceeded 95W only few times except benching. -
4.5 Pretty high rate. I hope with 4.0 GHz. he will not have problems with vrm at 8700 without k
We are waiting for your opinion on the processor, did he survive? -
VRAMS and MOSFETS are pretty poor cooled in this laptop. And if someone did cover mod than it compromise cooling of em even further.
Best idea would be to use something like this if you tend to overclock.
-
Good news. Thankfully CPU did survive! Now I'm going to try fixing VRMs. I have to order right parts from China and solder them. It should be around $100 total I guess, this time with proper heatsinks on VRM!
Huniken, Papusan, IllusiveMan and 1 other person like this. -
Very well. I hope you succeed. Are you sure that apart from the VRM, nothing else burned out there? did you do the diagnostics?
-
You could also think about new stock cover. I know that it will compromise CPU/GPU temperatures a bit but also it will help on VRAMS and rest of components. In this case air for fans will be taken from inside of laptop (so from VRAMS aswell) instead of outside of case. Ofc air temperature from inside will be a bit warmer but still - could help a lot.
Small heatsyncs will help a lot but they also might work as "heat soakers" - and in this case make it even worse without proper active cooling (another fan inside / laptop cooling pad or stock bottom cover)
happened to me when i tried to fix in this way my issue with heating soundboard. Without active cooling - it was even worse than without heatsyncs. And i believe @Mr. Fox was writing about it also - in his case it was SSD cooling if i am correct.hmscott likes this. -

Hey guys, I need help. I got Micron 3200 mhz CL16 kit 2x16GB but it won't boot not with 1 nor with both modules.
I currently have Micron 2133 mhz CL15 2x8GB, never ever had issues.
Is it the BIOS (I have one of the first bioses modded and unlocked by SVET and 7700K)? Or something else?
