Opened up this laptop for the first time and I have never seen something more beautiful om gosh! Installing custom bios by awesome guy svet (totally recommend him for custom bios on your Msi laptop, contact him on the Msi forums), and I had to disconnect battery for 40 seconds so I thought why not take a few pics?
$$ *_* amazing
Edit: there are so many options now in the bios! Yay

Naw I was referring to the likely hood of reaching that clock speed.
Almost everyone here with a 6700K was able to hit 4.6Ghz, just like everyone here hit 5.0Ghz on 7700K so I said
6700K 4.6Ghz is like 5.0Ghz on 7700K.
Performance wise, clock-for-clock are identical as far as I know.
Is that the 1080 or 1070?bloodhawk likes this. -
I think you may be referring to me. My system is still with Eurocom I believe. I was told last week that it was set to ship out to @woodzstack by today. Kevin at @eurocomsupport informed me that he was rebuilding mine with a new one, so once woodzstack gets it and tests it out, we'll know for sure.
@tgipier issue sounds more severe than mine. In my case I was able to at least play several games for usually around 15min or so, (sometimes longer, sometimes just only up to starting up the game) before getting some kind of display error and/or crash. Also, I noticed my GPU power draw would get "greyed out" on HWINFO whenever that happened, as if something cut off/throttled the power to it (well below temp and power limits) and it wouldn't properly work again until I restarted the laptop.

Actually, if you had the direct link to XTU or a profile, you could share it and anyone could click it and test it, it MIGHT work to get around the hidden locked menu's if yours is unlocked.
As it is stock bios, can not enable these settings like this
If we try it on our stock bios, it does something weird and the clocks stay low, like less then half. -
Nice thread. I am SO GLAD our friends at HIDevolution are selling this beast. My review of this machine is posted here, in case you would like to update the opening post with a link to it.

The 'ejection issue' used to be a problem with an old NVidia driver - this was months & months ago (can't remember when exactly). (A logo would come up in the Task Bar that would enable a user to right click on it to eject the GPU - strange!) -

haha yeah I seen that, but no this is different, I think... or is that what i'm vaguely remembering ? Either way it is not the same thing, unless NVidia is ejecting one persons 1070... -
What is your core voltage offset ? I have throttling

Thanks for the review; very helpful. I also watched a disassembly video last night to learn about serviceability. Looks good from that aspect, other than... two RAM sticks underneath the mobo? Whiskey tango foxtrot?!
Unlike @Mr. Fox, I don't plan to tear my machine down for fun, hardware design background notwithstanding. But I damned sure care that I can tear it down if I need to do a field repair, or for upgrades later.Donald@Paladin44 and Mr. Fox like this. -

About those RAM sticks underneath: The disassembly video showed those labeled in silkscreen as Slot 3 and Slot 4, and the ones on top as Slot 1 and Slot 2. Could @Donald@HIDevolution or someone confirm whether RAM has to be installed in that order (or do the first two sticks have to split between banks)? If so, that becomes an argument for me to order with 64 GB rather than 32 GB RAM, since I don't plan to do an immediate teardown (was going to have HIDevolution delid and repaste on their bench).

Thanks for the compliment @syscrusher. I am going to look into what effort is required to access the RAM under the keyboard and may include that in my teardown video. It is not immediately obvious what is involved, but I have not found a laptop yet that was so hard to work on that it scared me. Hopefully, it's not too much of a pain in the butt. I definitely want to find out and hope to share that.

With HIDEvolution, you are pretty safe to not need to ever tear it down. It can be ordered delidded, repasted, and with the ram configuration you want for a reasonable price.
Having to remove the motherboard to install RAM does mean that the keyboard is more rigid (otherwise its going to have a system of screws and snaps which generally doesn't work that well). Its only a real issue if you are swapping RAM out frequently for testing or something. I think its possible to install 32GB in slots 3 and 4, in you wanted to make upgrading to 64GB easier in the future. edit: After looking at a few desktop Z170 board manuals, it appears that slot 2 would likely have to be populated in order for the system to boot.Last edited: Jan 25, 2017hmscott, Donald@Paladin44, Spartan@HIDevolution and 1 other person like this. -

That's my plan. I'm buying my machine for work, not for play. It's not that I'm afraid to rebuild it. Rather, I don't have the experience at thermal pasting and overclocking, I don't have a dedicated ESD-safe workspace, and frankly one of the reasons I'm choosing a company like HIDevolution is because I trust them to do this sort of customization. I am interested in learning this whole repasting skill -- but I will start that process next time I upgrade my gaming tower, which is not the machine I use to make my livelihood.
Interesting -- I didn't know these were related. I did some PCB design way back when, and watching the disassembly/reassembly video on this machine, I was favorably impressed with the fab quality on the board itself, but did note that it had a bit more flex at cable terminations than what I would like. To be fair, my background was in circuit boards for industrial data acquisition, and our standards for mechanical durability were just shy of MIL-SPEC, so maybe I'm too picky. The board looks really well made, though.
That question seems to be all over the map for different motherboards. My company uses one particular model of high-performance server that has 32 DIMM sockets. You "can" populate them in many different configurations, and the system will still function, but certain configurations yield around 15% (or more) better performance than others due to bank interleaving on sequential reads and writes. The manufacturer provides a technical guidebook specifically on this topic, and they have a web page with an online calculator where you put in the number and density (which can be mixed) of your SODIMMs, and they tell you where to put each module.
TL;DR -- I have learned not to take for granted the notion of "any DIMM in any socket". It may be true for this machine, but I don't assume that.

Well i decided to go with the I7 6700k (not worth paying extra 110). Just the last question, its worth the 4k vs 1080p screen and upgrade the psu to the 330w ??
Enviado desde mi SM-G930F mediante Tapatalk -
lol well he asked and if you look in my XTU settings photo, it shows a 0.00 core offset.
If you aren't getting a GTX 1080, don't go with a 4K monitor. You should get the 330 PSU so you have room to OC, even if you are only getting a 6700K/1070.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 25, 2017Papusan likes this. -

Yep, it's ok, I liked your post - it was funny, I don't know why, not in a bad way towards you, it was just funny.

So I confirmed crashing again with a fresh installation of windows 10 in BF1.

Try running in windowed borderless mode

I dont think it helps and I think i run it in windowless before but I can check later.
I just have really bad luck with laptops. -
When you clean install what drivers are you installing? Are you installing all drivers from the Eurocom website?
-
GPU driveris the newest. I have already tested a bunch of driver combinations. -
Does anyone know when the 120Hz panel will be available from HIDevolution or Eurocom? I'm holding out for that feature, which will make this the hands down best 15" gaming notebook available, which it arguably is already!

Sorry I didn't quite follow your posts, would it be possible to know what the issue is and if it's with an add on GPU ?
-
Not the GPU drivers, what system drivers from Eurocom are you installing or are you installing all of them.
Last we had heard was sometime in January. I got sick of waiting for their official sale of the screen and just went ahead and purchased one separately and installed it in my F5. 120Hz is amazing on this beast and for gamers is a must.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 25, 2017 -
Yes. All of them from eurocom.
The gpu is tested seperately by @woodzstack so I am fairly certain its not the gpu hardware. -
Hmmm. Have you tried the @j95 drivers ?
-
No. Arent those for compabilities with gsync etc?
I am more testing for stability.Talon likes this. -
Nope. They are toned down and have almost every device ID possible.
So perfect stability. -
Where do I find these drivers?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I would think it time to get a new one. Time to RMA.
-
I agree. I have contacted @woodzstack for RMA.
-
Is the g-sync off.
-
That's good to hear it works. Are you getting full control of backlighting? Any issues with g-sync?

I ordered my machine about an hour ago from Donald@HIDevolution, and I will be starting a thread to share my experience.
Thanks to everyone who's shared their expertise here to help me make the decision.

I'm just asking cuz I remember g-sync seemed to cause more crashes when my own laptop was crashing like mad under win 10. With it off it seemed to crash less but it still crashed.
-
Backlight works, no Gsync, yet.. Should be soon with update. I ordered my panel and will have it tomorrow or Fri... Now I just need the laptop
lol
-
Uh what BIOS are you on? Backlight control does not work on my BIOS version yet or gsync. It will when Eurocom provided this update from what I've been told.
@Eurocom Support I sent in a support request for an updated BIOS but haven't heard back yet. What is the word on updated BIOS for the 120Hz panel?
Regardless the panel is simply amazing. Even without gsync games simply don't tears down I no longer have issues with dark spots in any games. This panel is super bright. -
Just tested it, still crashes.
-
I don't have the laptop yet but I could of sworn like 10-20 pages back a few people had it and no brightness issues. I don't have my notebook yet, hopefully by the weekend. But more likely Monday or Tuesday.
Edit: configurable in NV control panel. Sorry I should of mentioned that. I know it's not the same. But it works. My bad. -

Yes, that was the tipping point. I think I am the very first order for them of that model. Donald literally added it to their web configurator during my phone call. I had called to ask if it would be available soon enough that I should wait for it. If not, I was probably going to go ahead with the 1080p. But he said the 4K was just coming available now, my response was basically, "That's it, then. Let's do this." @Phoenix, you are absolutely right that this was what moved me from "probably" to "yes", because it made the machine meet 100% of my desired specs, rather than "all but one".
If I game, I'll probably do so at 1080p for performance, but my 3D tools (especially Blender in wireframe mode) will be really happy about that 4K res.
I ordered a 4K panel, maxed-out delid/repaste Silicon Lottery CPU with HIDevolution overclock/undervolt, one 2 TB Samsung 960 Pro SSD, 32 GB of 3200 MHz RAM, and remove the mechanical disk to save weight and power.
ETA for delivery is around four weeks, more or less.Donald@Paladin44 and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.
