    Great thermal review!

Do you think there would be any positive to doing a hole in the side of the fan enclosure pointing towards the ram and m.2? It would expel air towards those components and lose some toward the heat sink. But with the increased air flow availability with the hole in the cover maybe it would be okay? Thoughts?

Maybe you friends @Eurocom Support could send you another fan to test it with?

I have a feeling the air would be too warm to do any real cooling.

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. It was fun doing it, but knowing it was valued makes it even better, since that is why I share these things instead of keeping them as secrets.

That might work. If I had a spare fan I would certainly try that. The only potential issue could be the fans are already kind of weak and that could reduce static pressure to a detrimental extent. The RAM doesn't seem to get warm, but NVMe certainly does. If this little bugger had crazy opened can of whoop-ass monster fans like the P870DM3 I bet it would run super cool as well made as the heat sinks are. I think one of the reasons it gets warm is because the fans are overly sedate. But, that would also make the people that like quiet laptops pretty upset.

    Hi Mr. Fox,

I've been watching your videos in regards to your tear down and was wondering, do you I need to worry about the lack of airflow to CPU+GPU in the long term as there are no vents directly on top of the fans which was unusual. I'm not confident in taking apart my laptop and generally it runs pretty cool and I barely hear the fans. I get about 78c CPU and 72c GPU max went playing Witcher 3 for extended periods...

@Talon I think I might try this myself.. I unfortunately ran into some issues again with my screen flickering on and off during a game of TW:Warhammer =/ so much for thinking it was all gone... I remember you posting something about undervolting the GPU via afterburner several pages back, I think I'll give that a shot.

Anyway, I noticed I would be getting these random microsoft.net framework error messages when I power my laptop on or coming off standby/sleep. I noticed often times it would flash up on the screen then disappear, other times it will stay on the screen and I would have to hit either the "continue" button or "exit," neither of which does anything. I copied and pasted the error here, am wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of it? I tried using the framework repair tool off of microsoft's website but I don't think that did anything...

The reason for his chassis mod is to improve his cooling for OC'ing. You will be fine without a modded bottom cover. I DO, however, recommend a notebook cooler pad. That will help in the long run. If those are your average temps on full load, you have nothing to worry about.

Well you guys I have to say I'm pretty happy with this screen. It's 120hz only has one stuck red pixel, nothing dead. Although I honestly don't think I notice the 120hz vs the 60hz on the desktop when moving around my mouse? Any ideas why? Also thank you @Mr. Fox for the video on how to do this!

Edit: never mind I definitely feel the 120hz difference when playing a game

Gotcha. I didn't think about the fans being not powerful enough to push two hole out of the enclosure. Maybe Eurocom will send you one and you can try it anyway. Haha

    Yes.

Also this new vBIOS is great. It looks as if they undervolted each clock level like I was doing manually with prior vbios.

Now with a +200mhz overclock the GPU holes 1840mhz all day in BF1 at lower temps. The clock speeds are very stable and fluctuate little to none.

I posted it on previous page. It will update with the batch file. I had to run it twice to make it flash.

how hard is it to install that vbios? Is it just an executable and let it all run by itself?

Just run the batch file and hit "Y" and "Y". I would save our old vBIOS with GPU-Z prior to flashing.

Not going to ask where you got that vbios, but is it still the same ~130W TDP?

I haven't had time to truly mess around wth this vBIOS yet and won't for a week or so. I will do some more testing to see if they've reduced, increased or kept it the same.

"Out of the box" the clocks go straight to the Nvidia spec boost clocks of 1645mhz when under load and just sits there with no fluctuations. Overclocking allows the GPU to boost to that value more accurately and hold it without fluctuations.

It's entirely possible they raised the TDP a tad while modifying the clocks boost table to hit higher clocks at lower voltages.

I'll see if I have some time to tweak its boost tables soon.

I agree those temps are fine. You don't need to do the bottom cover mod if you're not pushing more heat than that. But, doing the mod should make them even better. If you want to do it, might as well. Cooler is always better if you're up to it and have the ability to do it.

Awesome. Yeah, it is a nice screen. Glad the video was helpful.

Yes this is normal. Go ahead and flash and then restart.

The vBIOS is official. In fact there are a few others but this is the newest and best. It appears to also solve the crashing issues some MSI 1070s were having (I never had any crashing).

Hummm i seem's to be locked @ base clock of 1442 mhz, it wont change even with an overclock.

    Got an idea?

Edit : Nevermind, that was idle clock, went up to 1800 in game ;)
    Seem's super stable for me.

If anyone is experiencing undervolts set with Intel XTU or BIOS not holding or resetting themselves after waking the laptop from sleep. Sleep is the issue, and has been shown to cause issues with Skylake and is a BIOS bug that needs to be addressed. I fixed the issue, but the only way to do that is to use hibernate or simply shut down every single time you close the laptop lid. After selecting hibernate the issues resolves itself, and can be replicated 100% of the time when using sleep mode.

@Talon I did some Benchmarking testing with my machine.
    New vbios vs old vbios

It somehow show -139 core clock speed with the new vbios while offering me similar performance.
I can't overclock it more than before, past 265/500 it just crashes for me,

Got any idea why i'm getting that -139 core clock read on 3dmark?
    1645 + 265 = 1910 so idk why i'm getting 1823 base clock now and was getting 1962 with old vbios ... seem's strange to me ..

    My new test :
    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/18082679

    Setting is :
    7700k @ 4.5 GHZ with -0,100v undervolt
    Gtx 1070 @ +265/500 with +0.100v voltage

    My old test :
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/11327201

    Setting was :
    7700k @ 4.5 GHZ with -0,150v undervolt
    Gtx 1070 @ +265/500

Tldr : I'm not getting any gains.

my boast clock was 1890+ without overclocking on the old vbios. now its only 1645. but if i overclock i can keep 1840+ without fluctuation now which wasnt posible before.

edit: wow @Talon these are great. temps are much better and i can hold 1900+ during gpu z test even that was fluctuating before and check the voltage its much lower thn before.

edit: cinebench r15 fps from 120 from before to 140+ its amazing.

    Seem's strange.
I'm getting better Graphic score with newest Vbios, i'm able to do 265/575 overclock on the card (was doing 265/500 before)
But clock wise, i'm currently getting 1840 average while i was getting score up to 1960 before.

Look like they made it more stable but reduced our OC'ing ability once again.
I don't get why they'd do that ... the card is running so ridiculously low in temperature they should allow us to bump the voltage and play with the clock a little more.

i uninstalled it few days ago and internet here is 80kbs down :( downloading will take over 8 hours. can check some games if u want.

edit: it seems i cant do more thn +270 on core clock and around +600 on memory. any number bigger and it crashes. but its significantly higher thn my previous limit of +255 and +520 on old bios and temps are alot better now too.

most stable settings for me now, anything higher crashes, sometimes not immediately but after some time but these seems good for now. will check watch dogs 2 now and see if it gives any better frames. will also check with the newest 378.66.

unfortunately games wont accept same clocks as the used for becnhs, watchdogs 2, bf1 all crashing. have to do +265 on core and +500 on memory. but there is huge fps boast now. watch dogs everything crank to max and 4k DSR im getting 25-30 now where 15-25 before. min fps is much better.

I updated to that new vbios and everything seems to be working great for me.

I keep getting that darn framework error everytime I power up and logon... any ideas?

I am coming to the tail end of a major project, so I will have some free time hopefully in two weeks to truly tinker again with my Tornado, P775DM3 (once it arrives) and finish my research on my new DT builds. I have a Rockit 88 Delid tool coming in (I was going to do the razor method again, but a certain forum member's delid results made me think otherwise). After the delid, I'll try to conquer or at least come near @Mr. Fox's scores (I didn't forget bro! Hahaha).

There seems to be a lack of quantitative, apples-to-apples comparison between the stock and new vbios. I will run some tests...

    Ok, finished!

    Steps to flash:

    1. Open Device Manager -> Display adapters -> Right click -> Disable NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
    2. Unpack the vBIOS files -> Right click nvflash.exe -> Compatibility -> Run this program as an administrator (if you skip this step, nvflash will "run", but it won't actually flash the vBIOS)
    3. Run the batch file
    4. Enable the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 in the Device Manager -> Open GPU-Z to confirm a successful flash

    Here are the test results:

Firestrike GPU Score (Stock vBIOS): 18163
Firestrike GPU Score (New vBIOS): 17526

    Thoughts
The vBIOS seems to underclock the GTX 1070N just slightly. The performance difference is minor, with the stock vBIOS being faster by ~3.6%. Performing my Black Ops 3 crash test which I detailed several pages back, I encounter a black screen on both the stock, and new vBIOS. In other words, I still require an undervolt... (but this only affects me).

In conclusion, unless you have a good reason (e.g. encountering issues), I would just stick with the stock vBIOS.

Edit: Looking closer at the core frequency, you can see there is less fluctuation using the new vBIOS, but this comes at a small performance cost. So I will revise my statement: It's up to your personal preference if you want a higher performance potential, or better clock stability. Keep in mind that regardless of vBIOS version, manual undervolting is still the best way to achieve clock stability.

Thanks to @Talon for bringing this vBIOS to my attention. It's good to know that we are not being neglected, and MSI is still working on the 1070N.

This is a screenshot of the viewer.. each one says it's a different CLSID and APPID.

These 2 below seems like to be the usual errors...
    • The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID

to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Well, I know it's not affecting use of my laptop or anything.. no problems using it day to day. It's just annoying to have it pop up almost every time I logon.

Sounds like you need to go into Component Services -> DCOM Config and poke around with the permissions. You may have to do a small registry hack first:

See amuzeinis reply in this thread: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...rmission/9ff8796f-c352-4da2-9322-5fdf8a11c81e

I don't know if there are any security issues in doing this, so it's at your own risk.

since i dont have firestrike i tested both in games and Heaven, my results are opposite. new bios can run at higher mhz regardless of temps while the stock ones take a hit when temps increases. here screens using bothe new and stock bios with same overclock applied.

    New bios.

I don't think your overclock has been applied properly when you are talking about your stock vBIOS, as the GPUz pic is showing that the card is just running at default clocks?

The 4k screen is 40 pin. The 120hz only works with the 30pin. By chance do you see a model number on your cable that you could take a picture of? I'm trying to get a hold of a 40 pin cable.

    Hmm,

It has been talked about in this thread alot that the 4k panel received a different cable.

My recommendation would be to see if you can get your money back on the panel and get a 1080p 120Hz. 4K resolution is a pretty miserable experience on a 17-inch notebook display and on 15-inch it is beyond miserable. There is no point in having 4K on a screen this small. You would have to use it at 200% scaling, which would essentially negate the purpose or benefit of having the higher resolution.

So he purchased the laptop with a 4k screen, which means it comes with the 40 to 40 pin eDP cable. If you purchase it with a 1080p panel you receive a 40 pin to 30 pin(panel side) eDP cable.
Sounds like he purchased the 120hz panel post purchase and went to remove his 4k panel and install the 1080p 120hz panel and ran into the connector difference.
I wish there was a way to get a hold of that 40 to 40 pin connector, but still am unable to.
