I ran a Fire Strike test with disappointing results, and I was suspecting that the setting of 25.375W was too low. It definitely looked like power throttling on my last run, and I know the machine is capable of better because I had about 2000 points higher last night. ( @Phoenix helped me tune, then Windows ate itself and I had to start over today.)

You and @Mattsin have confirmed my suspicion that this setting is likely the culrprit.

Yeah for those of you not following the Overclockers thread, I just scored this fella today with the 1070 http://www.3dmark.com/fs/12007332 16865 @ 260/480 and 5.1 GHz. Got this beast from @woodzstack, he did the 7700K de-lid, repasting, and much more, hell of a man

Also did a quick Cinebench R15 after that run - 5.1 GHz - 1106 cb

Please let me clarify -- the low wattage setting was not from @Phoenix! It was either a default or something I set accidentally when I was learning my way around XTU. I'm sure Phoenix knows it shouldn't be that low.

    next

overclock the GPU by 120mhz on the core and 200MHz on the memory for a very safe overclock

if it was stable/cool, do 150mhz core / 300 mhz on memory

also, set the gpu power management in NVCPL to high performance and set texture filtering to high performance rather than quality

    also, for benchmarking, disable GSYNC/VSYNC

for gaming, enable GSYNC and set VSYNC to FAST

I was able to undervolt my CPU by an additional 5 mV and bump my clocks by 100 MHz. This got me to 17140 Fire Strike, with slightly LOWER temps than my previous run.

@Phoenix, I'll try your suggestions as soon as I can conveniently reboot. Thanks!

Done, but no statistically significant change.

I'm already running with GSYNC off; I can barely see the difference in games, so I just leave it off all the time for best frame rate.

@syscrusher Yeah you'll find mixed opinions about GSYNC on this thread, personally i've had GSYNC panels before and loved it on games where i'd get unusual amounts of screen tearing otherwise, but now that I've been using the 120hz monitor without GSYNC, I don't really miss it all that much, always a nice option though.

As for your overclocking, keep trying different combinations of clocks and undervolts to get your temps at a comfortable level, the 7700k on tis machine can undervolt pretty well at higher clocks, personally though I think that 81C on the GPU is a little high, but I guess it is the 1080. What fan profile have you been using?

I had been letting the fans spin up on demand when I had that 81C. With the fans forced to aggressive speed, the temp dropped to 77C on my next run.

I may or may not have just had an OC-related crash. My system rebooted suddenly, and XTU warned me that might be a stability issue -- but then I saw that Windows had done an update without prompting me for permission to restart. (Dear Microsoft: That crap is decidedly unhelpful!)

Okay that makes sense then. On a system crash like that, it typically comes from the CPU end of things, perhaps you tried too much undvervolt for the desired clock speed? If it were the GPU your benchmark would just crash or in the instance of Fire Strike it usually says something like "benchmark canceled by user" and gives you a result of "0".....although a sudden ridiculous windows update related crash while trying to save the world is defiantly not unheard of

This is quite interesting... Lol. Do you run this with the back of the laptop off?

Very nice, My 1070 will not overclock over 230Mhz before it hits the power limit. Sad :(

If we are able to get past the Nvidia bios locks we will see insane scores in this forum. Most of us are overclocking our 70's/80's with insanely low temps we are just being stopped by power limits that should not exist...

Just keep playing with different combinations of Core and Memory overclock, all about finding that perfect balance. That along with the CPU of course. Also yeah if we got past the Nvidia bios locks this would all be a different story, I know there are a few of us that are not pushing much more than low 50's on the 1070 temperature wise.

What's the consensus about the headphone output when pushing through a decent set of cans? Does the 7.1 output translate well through open cans that have a decent sound stage like the AKG7XX series? Can the system drive power hungry cans or would an external amp be recommended? I've read through this entire thread in anticipation for my build, and I haven't really heard much about this. I have to say how impressed I am with the knowledge of these systems that this collective community has.

That has got to be one of the very best technical questions asked in a long while about this laptop. I should get a voltmeter out and read it, I would assume it does not have the proper impedance rating to drive a 600Ohm set of ears or cans. The internal speakers lend credit to the overall system and it's build but over-all this is not something for an Audiophile.

I assume it's range is in the 75+ to MAX** 90dba range I think it can do 192khz at 16bit but not 24bit not sure would have to check. because of the small chassis relatively compared to a shielded case, you COULD potentially hear some static from the extra capacitance and frequency and distortion from the other electronics inside, like the coils are right dead center without shielding on the motherboard. The natual humm of this laptop WITHOUT the fans is low 10's dba so it does make noise just by itself.
If you isolate yourself in some really good studio this laptop is not for you by a long shot. BUT - I would bet it could be modified to be perfect, but you;d have to change the CPU to like the 7600 and maybe use a Clevo Maxwell card like the 965M instead too. Also having a good clean power bar might help.

But as far as sound quality goes, for the average gamer, the 7.1 is well.. standard 7.1, better through HDMI of course, but there is not really any great fidelity to this laptop sound wise.

However, that is not to say it is bad by an average consumers point of view, in that case it sounds great ! I think you could pull off OKAY sound with a set of like Astro 50 or something, but you;d need an adaptor, and it might come out a bit low powered and dull/round instead of sharp with clear highs.

Is that what you wanted to know ? Anyone who knows this stuff better and has quicker access to some equipment to test , please add your own comments.

Thanks. That really helps. I am not expecting studio quality and cans like I mentioned can be driven to a decent extent by just an Astro mix amp. If you mic the setup with Astro the power draw becomes too great and an external amp must be used for the 7XX series. I believe cans like the AD700s have no problems at all, but are really easy to drive. I haven't really checked the specs of the Astro mix amp because it really is just an easy solution to adding sound stage to headphones through optical out. I am mostly curious as to how well the surround sound output translates to sound stage for HiFi cans even on the lower end of the spectrum like the AD700s. Thanks again.

How big are these drivers on this headset, if you do not mind me asking, I am not familiar with them. Are they like 50mm or larger ? I think you can or should compare the sound card DAC on this laptop with what is used in the MSI GT62/or GT83VR either of those would be what I normally compare this laptop too. Like the newest hardware and tech is similar tot he GT83VR and the original design and chassis, and MAYBE the DAC they use is from the GT62 if I guessed, because thats where this laptop started AFAIK...

I think they are 45mm - 50mm, I'm not sure. Their impedance is 62 ohms so not the most difficult to drive. It doesn't have to be for these cans specifically. It's just known that these are particularly good for testing sound stage as are the AD700s.

I designed in college and during an internship.. then I went and got a job in Automation control/ industrial programming. I miss designing hardware so much. I recently purchased an FPGA board to play with again.. Put my processor I designed on it and have some fun (VHDL, single core, runs linux) :D

I want to design hardware too. Waiting on my site to be finished before i throw some projects up, but man do I wish to just blurt out all my idea's because I'm so excited about them. Mind you, hard to find capable people who can contribute, but me and my best friend we were in electrical engineering together growing up, and I got another guy I was a team lead alongside that has more mechanical and CNC skill/knowledge then me too. So one day, here's to hoping !

I was going to give that a go and I also quite like the look of the fan cut out mod which @Mr. Fox has done too. Although I am concerned that the later would result in less air being drawn through the front vents over the m.2 slots.

@Mr. Fox, did you do before and after temps on the M.2 drives?

Wow, you and I have a lot in common! My degrees are BSEE and BSCompE, and I interned with a semiconductor manufacturer in college. Then I went into industry, doing mostly material handling controls design for nondestructive test automation. I worked with PALs in college; FPGAs were just coming along when I graduated.

Hanging on my office wall is the first production-scale commercial circuit board I ever designed. Serial number 0001 had a slight defect and was scrap as far as the company was concerned, so I took it home (slightly against regs, but hey...) and had it framed. :)

Yes. Nothing really makes any difference on those except adding a cooler on the M.2 drives. The vents in front are pretty useless. Before/after on the bottom cover mod showed no real change to NVMe temps... minor improvement with bottom cover mod, but not enough to matter.
You need to do this to make them cool... get rid of the thermal pads underneath. That traps heat and makes the palm rest too hot.

It might be Xenforo more than postimg.org, but who knows for sure.

I put my disposable images on Postimg.org and the ones I don't want to lose in imgur, most (not all) organized in albums to make them easier to find.
