Do you guys know how long tbe Thermal paste will last?
How often do you clean ur internal laptop? I mean the dust and etc...?
Can someone tell me about the 'Heat Sink' ? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Thermal pad lasts pretty much forever if it's not reused all the time such as multiple removal/reapply.
You can clean the vent/heatink periodically (like once every 6 month to 12 month) using compressed air or vacuum.Last edited: Oct 21, 2015 -
I am planning to upgrade my Apache Pro to SuperRaid2... Right now my storage is 1TB HDD 7200Rpm, so how to upgrade this to superraid? Do i need to buy a 128GB SSD ? How does it work? What are the difference between superraid and superRaid 2? And, roughly, how is it going to cost me?

Can someone in here make a review on how to clean Heat Sink and Dust for MSI GE62 Apache ? I think that i want to clean it manually, it had been 8 months, and now the Overheating issue had occured... So please SomeOne?

Hello!
Can someone answer me a few questions?
1) Between a ge62 apache pro and a gs60 ghost pro, what would be their main differences? Better display, thinner laptop, or something like that?
2) What about the differences between the ge62 and the ge72? Aside from the screen size, is there any other significant difference, regarding the display itself or the laptop?
3) How is the display in the ge62? Has anyone experienced backlight bleeding in dark screens? Or ghosting effect while gaming?
4) Has the Hybrid Power battery way of functioning ever been an issue for anyone? Like, you had to stop playing because of the consumption of the charge? In theory, it would limit the amount of hours you could play at full performance, right?
Thank you!Last edited: Oct 21, 2015 -
Question:
When swapping out my optical drive for an SSD caddy on the GE62, do I need to open up the bottom of the laptop? Mine unfortunately has some stripped screws in it. I can remove the optical drive with ease by just removing a single screw from underneath, but when installing a caddy, is it just a matter of sliding it into where the optical drive once was? Or do I have to open up the laptop to connect anything? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
GS60 has more premium because of its lighter weight and portability so these justified for additional cost.
GE72 has more space, which may have better ventilation than GE62, but other than this and different screen size they are pretty much identical.Kung Bore likes this. -

There's one screw that is holding the ODD (optical disk drive), so you do need to loosen it before you can eject the drive, then you will be able to install the SSD/SATA tray after.

So I just got a call from MSI tech support, and as expected I got the usual generic answers like 'try reinstalling the graphics drivers', and 'see if software other than GPU-Z and MSI Afterburner works'. I tried Intel XTU, and it shows the core clock and voltage but I'm not convinced that they're reported correctly. iGPU core clock is fixed at 1048MHz and voltage reads 0.0 volts(though it does randomly spike up to 0.9900V) when it's under zero load. What?
-
So, you just get a Basic Reply from MSI eh? Well, i think the best way is to wait for the Updates then...
-
Also can anyone using the Broadwell version confirm if their CPU usage rockets up when watching YouTube videos? I'm using the latest public build of Chrome with GPU acceleration on and when I watch videos in full screen I get CPU usages around 40~50%.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Hmm, didn't we already confirmed that the root cause is GPU-Z?
MSI provided those generic suggestions because it was not within MSI's scope of service to provide support on 3rd party utilities but they seemed trying to help you anyway.
I would believe that XTU reports more accurately than others since it's Intel utility that is designed for Intel processors. It is true that the CPU uses between 1.0volt to 1.3 (max) or 1.4 volts (OC). -

Does the color of power LED changes when you go into movie mode? -
Well seeing that MSI Afterburner didn't work as well I was kind of hoping that they would enlighten me as to what was going on to the best of their knowledge, but oh well.
When I watch YouTube videos I usually have the AC adapter plugged in, and it's always orange. The dGPU doesn't seem to be doing anything though and it should, I'm running Chrome with the iGPU. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
I see, Afterburner hasn't been updated since May 27th so we will have to wait for a new release to support it. Software support comes after.
Use GPU-Z to monitor the changes, open two (2) instances so you can monitor both IGD & dGPU at the same time. -
do you guys do clean install when u first receive the laptop >? did u update to win10 ? any feedback?
-
So installing the SSD in the tray doesn't require opening up the bottom of the laptop, correct? Just removing the one screw to take out the optical drive?
Just want to confirm before ordering. Thanks
-
You get two full-sized SATA ports (one being the ODD multiboost bay and one being the internal port), two M.2 key M slots, and one M.2 key B slot. The only port you can access without opening up the laptop would be the full-sized SATA ODD multiboost bay.Hexonic likes this.

Yes, that's right.
Here's a disassembly guide fyi.

Thanks guys! Last question, promise. Does the optical bay only support Sata II? My SSD is a Sata III and all caddies list Sata II support, but not Sata III. Can I put a Sata III SSD in the optical bay?

I just purchase a Ge62 2QF last week and had to upgrade it to Windows 10 Enterprise (bitlocker for work). Part of that wiped out the drivers.
In reinstalling the Realtek Drivers, it just would go into a loop of requesting a reboot, then uninstalling, then requesting a reboot, etc. I was able to halt that by removing the Realtek folders and the startup item, but I now only have the left/right speakers and no sub visible when I look at my sound properties.
I tried installing nahimic and it errored that I had the wrong version of the Realtek drivers installed. I did manually update the drivers in device manager to what I unzipped from MSI.
Has anyone run into this issue? -
Realtek drivers are weird i have had problems installing them too. I think i had to remove the old driver manually and then install new one. Also the driver when installed causes "pop" sound every time something plays any sound. My solution was uninstalling Realtek drivers and Nahimic. Now i am 100% happy and the sound is clear

You can, but if it's in a caddy operating at SATA II, the drive will operate at SATA II as well. I'm not sure what specification MSI is using on the ODD connection anymore (thought it was SATA III). -
Well, then I'm glad I ended up not installing either and just went with the Windows 10 default drivers!
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
ODD is SATA II only, if you use SSD then it will be capped at SATA II. -
Just received my GE62 today and one of the first issues I noticed with my laptop was the annoying popping sound whenever a sound is about to play.
Could anyone clarify if uninstalling the Realtek + Nahimic drivers is the way to go? Is this a common issue? I'm wondering if this is a hardware or software issue.
EDIT: I tried to uninstall the Realtek driver, but when I refresh for hardware changes, it automatically reinstalls it. Problem still exists. Time to RMA?Last edited: Oct 23, 2015 -
I'm running Windows 10 and have the Nahimic software installed. I installed the audio driver from MSI's website too, but Windows updated it to a newer version. Have no issues at all, except for audible white noise through the headphone jack.
-
Althouh i liked Nahimic, i have had problems with it even with W8. The music button was greyed. With W10 Nahimic caused sound distortion. Default HD Audio is more then enough
I am not sure why are you refreshing any hardware changes. Just open Control panels -> add/remove programs -> uninstall Realtek. Restart PC and let W10 default driver take care of the rest. You can't do any harm by uninstalling audio driver, so your best clarification would be trying it yourself and then reporting back if it helped
-
Thanks for the replies, guys. I was able to finally install the default Windows audio driver in the end. Looks like it might really be fixed. Gonna test it for a few more days.
-
So, guys, today my external battery arrived! It has 84Wh capacity (23k mAh) and a lot of tips so i believe almost all notebooks would fit. Apache Pro certainly does
. I have wrote a bit exhausting review about it, so if you are interested, check the link for reviews and guides in my signature
PS: I am glad i could help @sumiru -
Just a thought - does the placement of the subwoofer on the right side contribute to the impression that the right speakers are louder than the left speakers? When I test the left and right speakers using the Windows sounds, both speakers sound equal. But when I'm listening to music and watching videos, the right side sounds significantly louder for some reason.
Last edited: Oct 24, 2015 -
There is a reason why most sound systems have only one big subwoofer - its low frequency sound spreads equally around the room, so anywhere in the room bass sound the same. Look at the speaker settings if you have the L/R balance set to 0. Check if speakers are obstructed by something. First of all try listening to music with headphones connected to see if it is really a hardware or software problem.
-
Headphones work fine, since there's no subwoofer factor involved.
I'm starting to think the subwoofer is working like a 3rd set of speakers.
When I set the R speaker to 0, sound is coming normally out of the L speaker, silence from R speaker, and sound coming from subwoofer. Hence the effect of setting R speaker to 0 isn't as significant as setting L speaker to 0 (nothing coming from L speaker, everything coming from R side). -
Well, it might be true. It might be caused by subwoofer, but i think the problem is caused by stereo sound itself. Most songs (rock especially) separate instruments into L or R channel. The R channel seems to be always used a bit more. It might depend on how much quality headphones you have. I am now listening to Parov Stelar - My inner me. It is slower song with many layers of sound and good channel division. It is the FLAC version and the sound sounds very balanced.
-
I've noticed something about the fans.
If I turn up both fans to max, I noticed that the airblow of the fan of the CPU is much stronger than the one of the GPU although they rotate at the same speed.
is that normal? -
So am I in the right place to proclaim that I am a proud owner of this amazing little laptop? I hope so cuz I'm pretty stoked about it, being my very first laptop and all.
As a photographer I've been on the road more these days and rather than lugging my desktop to edit at night while in a hotel I decided to get this laptop. Going from a water cooled & oc'd Core i5 and GTX 570 to the GE62 I'd have to say it's more than capable at running my editing software. And I can run BF4 at medium settings to my hearts content!
I'm replacing the hdd with a Samsung 850 Pro 512gb ssd, adding an 850 Evo M.2 500gb ssd for photo editing storage, with the Samsung T1 500gb external ssd for transfer to my desktop.Last edited: Oct 27, 2015 -
Good on ya' dbthump!
Um, since you are a photog, perhaps a photo or two is in order?
Which GE62 did you get? Skylake or pre-Skylake?
-
Hey, just wanted to share my experience about my speakers popping when my GE62 2QF Apache Pro (Win10) was about to play a sound (and the 3 seconds delay of what I identified as the sub-woofer).
I tried a lot of thing, included editing the registry and this is how I have solved my problem :
- Uninstall Nahimic software + Realtek Drivers, then reboot (at this point, there was no more popping, but the sub-woofer didn't play any sound in my case). Not a problem if Windows update install Realtek drivers by itself. I read some of you did that and stopped here.
- Clean the registry. I personally use CCleaner. And Reboot.
- Download on MSI website Nahimic Software + Realtek drivers included in the archive.
- Install the Realtek drivers found in the archive (in my case, in the folder Audio_6.0.1.7592 where 6.0.1.7592 is the Realtek drivers version)
- Reboot (kind of a reflex, I must confess)
- Install Nahimic software (in my case, v 1.2.7).
- Reboot.
- And then, edit registry :
- Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Realtek\Audio\RtkNGUI64\PowerMgnt
- Edit Enabled key to 0 ! I've seen a lot of thread where the solution was to set it to 1... but not in my case : set it to 1 and it's popping like hell !
- So I currently have :
- DelayTime : 10
- Enabled : 0
- OnlyBattery : 0
- PowerState : 0
- REBOOT
Et voilà ! It worked for me, hope I'll work for some of you ! I'm finally able to enjoy the sound of my new laptop !Kevin@GenTechPC and dzedi like this. -
Skylake or not I'm unsure. As for pics, simply google dbthump and you'll find me.
-
Thanks for taking the time to post that Flippy18.
BTW - I've always suggested a re-boot after any install/uninstall or update or any "scan" where you change something including the registry either manually or automatically.
You know, as Ripley said: "It's the only way to be sure".
-
The most recent models have the Intel Skylake CPU's and associated chips.

Hey guys, looking to get the GTX970m version of the GE62 Skylake. Only concerns I have are battery life and screen quality. Any noticeable improvements to battery life from skylake? I know it's suppose to be theoretically better, but haven't heard anything from real life tests. Would like to be able to get 3-4 actual hours of web browsing when unplugged. Also, a little worried about the TN panel as I'm coming from a Dell XPS QHD. Comparing this between a GS60, Gigagbyte p35, and Sager NP8657. Like that the Gigabyte and Sager I can get with IPS displays, but not sure about the Sager or GS60 battery either, so probably between the p35 and GE62.
-
I'd expect the battery life to be only slightly better, but you could probably get ~4 hours of web surfing if you tweak the power settings around a bit. As for the screen, it's not that bad. It isn't IPS, so you do get narrower viewing angles and a teensy bit of backlight bleeding but I'm okay with it.

i want to do a clean install .... can i use the F3 shortcut for it and restore? or i need to create burn recovery first?
-
Thanx for reply kevin. My computer will arrive without operating system. Its freedos. Is installing windows easy? and should i update the bios ? And how working msi live update or should i use the manual install drivers ?. I have no idea about freedos computer
which windows version is good for this notebook ? I hope it will do not makes me problem so much because i readed forum and many nb62 users says switching between graphic cards is seems problem. Can you give me more advice for this notebook . What should i look for attention ? Sorry for my english
