Turns out it's Haswell, and I'm ok with that. Can't overclock anyways, right? Not that I want or need to.

Because i was too lazy to mess with registry, i have just uninstalled the Driver and Nahimic and installed the most up2date driver from official support page, which is actually a bit older then the one packed with Nahimic. No more popping and excellent sound :)
Thankfully with our SSD it takes just a few seconds to reboot :D i would probably go mad if i would have to do this with my old computer :D
Hey bro :) nice to see another guy with our devil machine :D installing OS should be super easy... you just have to insert the OS disk and all the necessary data will load from the dist to RAM to simulate system environment and help you with the process :) you just have to click thru all the "next button" pages :D
Well... Intel's business model looks like this: You invent a new technology, lower its performance by 80% and then slowly increase it for next 10 years :), so you can show to your geek friends, that you have super-duper ultra powerful notebook, which has whole 3% better performance, then their one year old model ;). Skylake is basically the same as 5th gen, but with a little it increased specifications and few new instructions, which won't help you anyway :D. So if whole notebook structure didn't change, then expect like 20 minutes battery life change at best. ;)

You can with Intel XTU (not by a lot though) but with CPU temps reaching 90 degrees Celsius under heavy load, it's really not recommended. It performs good enough at nominal clock speeds.

Thank you for your reply! What about the display? Is blacklight bleeding and ghosting a common issue? And is the Hybrid Power a real issue, since theoretically the amount of time you can play is limited?

Hey everyone. I just picked up a GE62 Skylake for my girlfriend for her birthday. So far everything works great except the wifi. It keeps flipping out and disconnecting and/or going into airplane mode. I checked all the function keys and they seem to be working fine, so I don't think it's an issue with SCM. I uninstalled the drivers for the card and reinstalled using the ones from Intel's site (I think version 17.x? It said Latest on the download). Anyone else having this issue? Do I need to RMA it for a bum wifi card? I'm concerned because it's brand new out of the box. I'd hate for her to have gotten a defect.

    1. Installing Windows is easy if you have experience with it in the past.
    2. Yes, you should update both BIOS & EC firmware to ensure the best user experience.
    3. MSI Live Update is not intended for notebooks, therefore you will need to install driver individually manually.
    4. There are little issues with Optimus, updating to the latest driver will usually help on the whitelist of supported titles.

Yow guys I have a couple of questons!

    I bought the MSI GE62-2qe and installed Windows 10. Some problems I fixed, some I couldn't ..
    Still have problems with:
    - The sound of my fan (sometimes the speed goes up, without me doing any hard work on the laptop.)
    - Dragon Gaming Center doesn't work (It used to work at first, think I deleted a driver)
    - SCM won't work or start.

    Thanks for the help!

Hi, the laptop isn't cumbersome, can easily fit into a backpack, it weighs about 5 pounds. The Power brick is about the size of a Samsung Smartphone and about 2,5 cm thick. I just got it and satisfied so far.

Need some help with a small issue. I just updated the keyboard utility and before while booting up, the keyboard would be lit red and then switch to a rainbow pattern, but now it stays red even after loading up. I can switch it back to rainbow in the utility but I wish I didn't have to do that every time I power on the computer. I didn't have this problem before applying the update that I was prompted to do!

If you're really stressing your hard drive (constant read/writes) and CPU/dGPU at the same time I'd say that's around normal temps. I have a 5400rpm hard drive installed in the multiboost bay and it goes up to around 45 degrees during disk defragmentation.

Well if there is indeed a problem with the stock hard disk I'd recommend running some tests on it (like CrystalDiskMark and good ol' chkdsk -f) and compare results with other hard disks with similar specs. If the results are different enough to rule out margin of error go ahead and contact MSI. If not, it's perfectly normal. I don't know how much the temperature rises when the disk is under heavy load (I run most of my applications off of a SSD) so I can't say for certain but I'd expect idle temps to be in the low 40s.

Is anyone here able to actually get the laptop to boot from a usb drive?

I want to dual boot another OS but so far it's proving impossible to get the USB to boot. In the bios I've tried pretty much all the combinations with legacy usb support one, eufi bios with and without csm etc, I've also used multiple usb bootable tools trying different partitions like MBR/GPT with a fat32 and NTFS drive. Nothing works, it works perfect on an old laptop but this one just doesn't accept anything of the sort.

Sometimes I'm able to actually boot the usb through the bios boot setting and I just a strange error with a small red box. Can't even remember what it says but can replicate to report back. If i change the boot setting from eufi to eufi with csm I am able to boot through the usb flash drive but then it freezes and BSOD happens at the exact same time every single time. I've also played around with secure boot setting with no luck

And if I try to boot through windows EUFI, I just don't get any access to the usb anyways because it ignores it when I click on it.

Thoughts? This is a problem that someone shouldn't have to go through at all... and yeah, I've tried the little guide on the first post of this thread + done numerous searches.

Depends on what you're trying to boot to. Linux? Windows? OS X? Seems like the BIOS is recognizing the USB thumb drive but the OS on the drive is having trouble taking over.

May I ask which laptop model/CPU/OS you have? I'm sorry I can't help you, but I'm curious about this because I may get the GE62 Apache 276 (Win 10, Broadwell i7-5700HQ). I've read that Skylake removed support for USB-based Windows 7 installation, so my hope was to get the Broadwell model then just do a clean install of Windows 7 via bootable USB. I assumed that since it has a USB 2.0 port there shouldn't be any issues, but now I'm wondering if this will be possible.

Best of luck on finding a solution to your problem.

I'm running on the broadwell i7-5700HQ chipset. The thing is when I first bought the laptop I wiped the SSD and was able to install a clean version of windows 10 with no problem but now I can't boot with USB and when I do, it crashes hard.

Can't really help you on your issue there either :p

Just out if curiosity does anyone know if this thing is compatible with 16gig sticks of RAM? I know the specs say up to 16gigs total (which suggests it's only compatible with single modules up to 8) but the 5700HQ supports up to 32.

Not that I'll be upgrading soon, I'm plenty fine running only 8gigs and the few 32gig kits out there are just mindbogglingly expensive.

In your case the main question is, do you really need Alienware or MSI gaming laptop? For light gaming there are a lot of better choices, which have twice as long battery life and weight something like 1 Kg max.? If your main concern is portability, then you should look really for something else. Performance of those new intel GMAs is awesome! You can play even BF 4 with decent FPS.

Also you should think about touch screen. Although i am not a fan of touch screens on PC, cleaning standard screen is painful. I totally hate when someone comes and touches the screen with his sausages to point at something. Those touchscreens are made to be easily cleanable and if you live somewhere in dusty place, then you will regret every look at the display in sunlight :D

    Hello everyone. Again.....

Random question, do you think it would be possible to upgrade the panel on the Apache Pro to a touch screen? Windows 7 i felt never needed a touch screen but now im on Windows 10, i think im msising out.

Just a question, tell me if im stupid :)

It's possible but very difficult, and it won't be perfect.
You need compatible touch screen module to fit into existing frame and USB signal must be linked to the system board.

    Hello everyone,

New GE62 2QF (Broadwell/970m) owner here. I've had it almost a week and its running well so far. I really like the performance - the cpu is right on the heels of my heavily overclocked desktop 3770k in typical tests.

The only issue I've run into was removing the killer network suite - it broke the ethernet and wifi and would not connect to anything. Still broken after reinstalling the killer driver-only package and the intel wifi too. I even ran some commands at the prompt to get windows to rebuild its networking stack - no dice. I ended up just restoring it to factory and disabled the killer suite without removing it, no problems since. Hopefully that was some kind of ghost glitch and I wont have any issues now - I tested the ethernet with a large file transfer and it was able to hold 100MBytes/s so it looks ok now.

I was wondering if anyone has tried overclocking the display in these notebooks. I guess it would be nice to see 72hz for smoother movie playback and a few extra frames in less demanding games.

I was also wondering about how strict MSI is with customers opening the laptop while under warranty. I must say these new M.2 pcie x4 ssd drives are mouth-watering - well exceeding read speeds of 1GB/s. Its really no problem for me to do this kind of work myself, but I'd rather not risk the warranty. If its a big deal I might just get one of those adapter bays for the optical drive and wait it out.

I'm also curious if anyone has experience with running LatencyMon on these machines - particularly if there are any drivers (and versions thereof) I should look-out for that are known to cause unusual lag at the system level. Its really annoying to pin-down a misbehaving background task that locks mouse input or causes game stutter at random times, so if anyone knows about this I would like to hear your thoughts. I was seeing a bit of this before disabling all the killer filters on the network adapters, but I'm still keeping a close eye on it. Stuff like this is a deal-breaker for me, so I am putting it under a microscope while I'm still in the return window. So far I've got the latest iGPU, wifi, RST, and chipset drivers updated directly from Intel's site as well as the latest nVidia driver - everything seems pretty smooth.

I got the GE62 2qe apache, and it started with windows 8.1 but I upgraded it to 10. Now whenever I play league of legends or even watch a video in Mozilla, the Icons are either very big or small.
Does anybody else have this too? And does someone have a fix?

Been busy recently, didn't see replies but I appreciate them!

Trying to boot into Windows. I've also tried burning other windows images to the usb but the same error occurs.

Yeah I've tried two usb 2.0s and one usb 3.0 both into different ports on the computer. No difference.

But my objective is to dual-boot windows 7!

I disable secure boot from the bios which is the only way I'm able to get into the usb flash drive past the point where it loads the file. Then as I start to see the windows setup initialize to prompt me to install windows 7, the screen freezes, turns blue (blue screen of death) and stays like that.

Really weird issue that I haven't encountered before and I've used quite a range of different motherboards.

Hi all, new to MSI with the GE62 2GF Apache Pro(970m). Retired a Asus 17" ROG(560m).

Am I suppose to have access to all the options in the Nvidia Control Panel? All I see is the 3D tab, the Display and Physics(I think) tabs are missing. This is with the latest drivers downloaded via nvidia geforce experience. I noticed that the nvidia VGA drivers off of MSI website are nearly double the MB than what the drivers are from Nvidia. Is it better to use MSI?

Also, are the individual keys able to be their own color, or is it just zones?

Other than that I've been running with the max GPU OC(msi afterburner)with no issues. It's really been a solid laptop out of the gate with no crashes or issues to speak of in 3 weeks. It's my first experience with SSD and I'm absolutely floored by the performance.

Part of me thinks I should have maybe went with a new DDR4 setup but after looking at some comparisons it doesn't seem like theirs a big enough justification for what little performance boost for the cost. I paid $1199, I5700, 970m, ssd, 16gb, 1tb, win 10.

Hey, looking to getting the broadwell 970m version. How's everyone's battery life on day to day tasks? Can't seem to find battery info on broadwell version just haswell. If anyone has any experience with this vs the Gigabyte P55 that I'm also looking at, that would be great.

    Hey ssewki -

Don't know about the RAM limitations of your system, but take a minute to Google "Black Ops 3 RAM problem" and you'll see there is a fix for the RAM memory "leak" that causes systems to "freak out" while playing Black Ops 3.

    Enjoy.

Hi all. I'm thinking of getting the GE62 2QF. I'm a mobile DJ; therefore need to know how this laptop handles latency. The version I'm looking at has:
    i7 5700HQ.
    16gb RAM.
    128SSD & 1TB HDD 7200.

Has anyone here ran a DPC latency monitor to check for annoying background tasks eating up memory? If not, is there anyone willing to run the following tool on their laptop to confirm if this will be fit for me playing live music:-
    http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon
The test should be run for at least 5 minutes, as some processes can pop up periodically.
If you could also post your results, that would be really helpful.

    Thanks in advance, Dane.

I downloaded 3dmark on steam, anyway running the default (i.e. demo) benchmark I get around 6500, that seems a little low i was expecting around 7200 can anyone offer any advice

Im using 970m with 2.6 Haswell cpu 16gb ram.

I was also asking about this a couple days back but I never got a response. I've had the GE62-2QF for almost two weeks, and I've finally found some time to test it. Its the same model you mentioned. I am very picky when it comes to my computers as I typically build my own desktops for gaming, entertainment, and general workstation use. Intermittent and seemingly random stutter drives me crazy and I will go to great lengths to avoid it.

Although its not as clean as my desktop, this laptop is not bad. Generally, it feels as quick as my desktop but the latency test isn't quite as good. I had to remove the Norton security suite that was preinstalled - it was causing latency spikes in ndis.sys quite frequently and reproducibly. I also disabled the killer networking suite. I was seeing latency spikes in ACPI.sys that was resolved once I exited the MSI gaming and SCM tray applications - even though the spikes didn't seem to impact streaming music playback and gameplay feels smooth. I've updated a few drivers directly from intel and killer but my setup is mostly identical to what you get from MSI.

Here is a link to my screenshots of LatencyMon: http://imgur.com/a/sJchI

Note I ran the test in balanced power mode to better reflect general usage latency. I would expect the results to improve while under high performance mode, but this isn't bad. Sometimes latency issues can be notoriously hard to pin down and reproduce on different machines so I would recommend thoroughly testing it if you buy it - and return it if it does not perform to spec. Just be prepared to tinker with it to get the performance you're looking for - in my experience notebooks have always been tricky to get dialed-in just right.

This example was run while in high performance mode. Here I disabled all of the MSI tray apps, no antivirus but windows defender and windows firewall were still active, the intel wifi was active and connected, and a few pages open in chrome.

Also, I did a registry edit to disable the low-power state of the realtek audio. I was noticing a subtle "pop" over the speakers when various apps would begin/end audio playback and thus trigger the audio chipset to power up from a sleep state. Disabling this low-power mode resolved the issue. (This solution was posted a number of pages back in this thread, so thanks to those who discovered it)

This is the key location in question, just switch the value for "Enabled" to 0 (zero). Alternatively, setting "OnlyBattery" to 1 (one) will only enable low-power when running on battery.
    Code:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Realtek\Audio\RtkNGUI64\PowerMgnt

Make sure you set the high performance power profile before you run any games or benchmarks. My 970m+Broadwell setup nets about 6700 (firestrike normal) with the latest nVidia driver, so not far off. If you look at some of the higher scores in the records list you will see higher GPU clock speeds used as well - so you might need to overclock to hit 7k.

That still doesn't change the fact that the game hogs an insane amount of RAM.

Intel does not officially support 2x 16gb on the 5xxx series but you can give it a go with a place that has a good returns policy.

Well as a follow up to my other post. If you want to boot a USB you must use Legacy boot option and make "usb hard drive" first boot option. No need to play around with secure boot. Also I found using rufus worked while using other tools did not.

To install windows on GPT you need UEFI, since you can't boot with UEFI you need to convert the drive to MBR which I did via paragon tools.

For BIOS you need MBR partition as you cannot use GPT.

In order to make a system dual-boot you need to take out one drive while you install windows 7 on the other one. So you pretty much have to open up the laptop, take out the ssd, install windows on your other drive, then reinstall your other ssd. IF you don't do this you get a bunch of errors.

    thanks microsoft.

Yes it does have a nasty habit of moving the boot partition around to another drive.

That... actually makes sense. Intel's spec sheet says up to 32GB, but doesn't list the RAM configuration.
