Anyone having hard times to shutdown computer? After W10 install it happened occasionally, that it couldn't be turned off. Now it happens very often. Only hard power off solves this. The screen just goes black but computer keeps running.

Have a look in the updates log, see if anything related to the chipset or GPU has been automatically updated.

Performing upgrade to Win10 can cause various kind of issues that only minority of users encounter unfortunately. It's recommended to reset the stock OS using built-in reset/refresh function before performing the upgrade, and please make sure BIOS, EC, and drivers are up-to-date to reduce any unforeseen issues.tomasoncz likes this. -
Thanks for help advises. It seems it is caused by Windows Update as every time my other computer installs updates this one refuses to shutdown. Only think which seems to solve this without hard reboot is restarting the PC, which triggers update installation. After that, everything works ok until next update.
I will try to factory reset window, when i have more time to do so and report back

Usually it's chipset/gpu driver related I have found, to give you a loose guide.

Hi,
My GE62 is no longer reading cds / dvds.
The drive appears under "This PC"
It was reading some weeks ago.
The device driver seems to be working properly.
Oh - Windows 10
regular drivers
Any ideas how to fix / trouble shoot?
thanks in advanceAttached Files:

Check that the sensor is clean, use a microfibre cloth to gently wipe it.

I'm showing a IPS panel in mine. I thought they weren't with these models?

Hi
tried cleaning gently - my laptop is barely 3 months old and i've only used the CD drive a handful of times.
Any other suggestions?
is there a driver to reinstall? I didn't see one on the MSI support site
thanks in advanceLast edited: Nov 15, 2015 -
It is true that GPU drives has its problems too last few days. Sometimes after waking PC from sleep dedicated GPU overtakes the work and i cant switch it back to integrated one without restart. nVidia released new driver so i will try to install it. Problem is that i cant replicate the problem it is random so it will take some time to see if it helped

I've been eyeing this laptop for some time but the thing bothering me is I keep on hearing stuff about its noisy fans. Is it really that loud?
For some reason the Australian GE62 Apache model only comes with a GTX 950M. Its a DDR5 though so not sure if that'll run more efficiently than the 960+ DDR3s. Is the 950M and i7 5700HQ a good combination? -
GE62 is a powerful laptop. Of course, heat is produced. Of course, you need to cool it down. So yes, there is fans working, and making some noise.
But the noise depends on what you're doing :
- Internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint : the CPU temperature will not be very high (between 45 and 60°C)... which means the fans will not rotate, or at the first step : 3000 rpm. Usually, fans start to rotate, cool down the CPU, and stop for a while. It's true that the first step of rpm (3000 rpm) is quite high and make some noise. But again, it's a powerful laptop, it need to be cooled down.
- When playing games. Yes, it makes some noise. Yes it's quite loud. But if you don't want your laptop to reach 100°C and burn your CGU / CPU / MB, etc... Sometimes I play with my earphones, sometimes I don't. IMHO, sound quality is good and you can turn the volume up.
Now, about the CGU. When I bought mine, I checked which GPU had the best price / quality ratio. It was worth it to pay more and get the 970m instead of the 960m, because 960m is like an entry-level gaming GPU (and it will not support new games for long...). So I'm kind of afraid when you're talking about 950m :

Okay so I am having a ton of issues with the shift mode switching. For some reason, some of the Fn+F# key combinations just DO NOT work. Fn+F4, which is supposed to launch the Dragon Gaming Center, Fn+F5, which is supposed to switch between Eco modes, Fn+F6 which is supposed to toggle the webcam and Fn+F7 which is supposed to cycle between shift modes just DO NOT work at all!. What is weird is that Fn+F2 (Display selection), Fn+F3 (trackpad toggle) Fn+F10 (Airplane mode) and Fn+F12 (sleep) all work perfectly. I have no idea why this is happening. Any inputs?
-
When used normally they spin just a little or not at all. If you set profile to set CPU to its minimum performance, it is absolutely enough to do almost anything except gaming and fans wonť even turn on, but it depends on room temperature too. Here it is mostly about 22°C and it doesn't spin at all. When you play a game and fans are at max speed, you can hear it even in next two rooms even with TV turned on. It is loud a lot, but hey you dont want to scorch you lappy do you?
You wont find any ntb that has good cooling and is silent. It either is powerful and loud or weak and silent... well or powerful and scorched xD... The worse is that the sound has higher frequency - it is whistling a bit. Not like really whistling but it is definitely not bass sound.
PS.: go for 960 or 970m... with 950 you will have like half year before lowering ingame settings to Low and max a year until you will have to lower even the resolution. -
I want to add a second ssd drive, 250GB, any suggestions?
-
Samsung evo 850 is cheap and everyone raves about it
-
I upgraded from win 8.1 to 10 and havent had this issue or heard about it. So maybe its just yours :/
-
Try opening task manager to see whats running in the background. Sometimes i start mine too and the light is red (discrete graphics running) but i let it run all the tasks it needs to do and after a while it goes back to blue. A couple of times i have had it stuck on red and ive unplugged the power cord, left it a second plugged it back in and it goes back to blue. Weird.
-
Do you know if it'll fit another M.2 SSD(that's the 128gb ssd version right?)? I'd rather not use my dvd drive.
-
[/QUOTE]
Thanks for the info. Graphics card won't be much of a problem as I'll only play the odd game here and there. But its that loud it can be heard from 2 rooms away?! There goes my plans of playing games past midnight...
Do you know if the ASUS ROG laptops are any quieter? -

You can reclaim the space in the ODD bay but the speed is limited to SATA II (3.0Gbps). -
the 128 is pci and the two spare slots are Sata3
I put 2x Transcend 2280 256GB sata into my machine

That or the 850 evo will do very well too.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
How do you like your Transcend's performance so far? -
Hi Kevin no problems at all , performance wise (i have them raided together) I was getting over 1030mb with crystal mark default settings , Im not into benchmarking so im not sure if thats good or not but im happy.

Hey might be a stupid question...but anyway to program the keyboard to be able to play pause or skip a song? Can't find that in the steelseries program. Also can the steelseries button only hold up to 4 presets? Can't find a way to add more to the button either.

Just got my GE62 i7-6700HQ/GTX960M
Ran a quick benchmark and monitored temps:
so far I'm a little disappointing in this machine actually. Whenever something graphically intensive comes on, there's an audible electrical hum that comes from the laptop, I think it's coming from the GPU area.
also, the fans are louder (when on) than my previous GE60. The GE60's fan was always on, but it made a lower pitched noise compared to this GE62, which has a high pitched whine.
and there's only 1 m.2 slot
And another thing, I just got this laptop and HWMonitor says by batter wear level is already 7%. Could MSI be reusing cells from old batteries?Last edited: Nov 19, 2015sloth89 likes this. -
So i recently bought a bluetooth headset and tried using it with the laptop and it all works fine. The problem is when i try to surf the web. My wifi speed with bluetooth turned significantly drops. I almost have to wait 20 secs for a webpage to load up. Any fixes?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
The humming issue is the PWM for the GPU, so MSI will need to replace the PCB.
Have you updated the Bluetooth driver to the latest version? -
Yes it seems everything is upto date
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Did you download it from here?
http://www.killernetworking.com/support/driver-downloads -
no not from there. Should i download it from there now?

Hi guys, recently got my GE62 2QC. As it comes with single color keyboard, I decided to replace it for a colored one. Now it's here, yet I don't know how difficult is the keyboard changing process in MSI laptops. Has anyone had any experience in replacing the keyboard in GE62? I found some disassembly videos, however they only show the removing of the back cover...
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yup, try it as they are the manufacturer of the LAN & WLAN chips. -
Sorry guys for late response... i have no time these days so even though i come as often as i can i have time just every couple days
Yeah, there could be something in the system. I will have to factory reset it, when i have some time, but it didn't happen in about a week, so may be it was bug, that was solved by an update.
I am very used to have problems with Optimus, my old Acer lappy used the same technology and sometimes nVidia drivers didn't want to cooperate xD. I tried every standard way like hibernating it again or sleep or removing power cord and killing processes... nothing helped except restart. Now i have started to shut down computer instead of sleep (the SSD is very fast so there is almost no difference) and now the problem is not occurring.
Well it is almost silent when idling but it is really pretty loud under heavy load. If you would play games that are not very demanding then you could use jsut the integrated GC and you can play all night xD
Never used or seen any of these ROG laptops sorry, but head to http://www.notebookcheck.net/. They test parametres like heat and noise under load and in idle state so you can compare them

Those of you who are are new and are worried about high temps. I've noticed with heat that over time my load temps have decreased from my initial couple of weeks of usage. If I recall from my desktop enthusiast days(many moons ago), I think it takes time for the thermal compound to mature. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
-
You're right. It's best to loop some benchmarks for a while when you get a new computer/reapply thermal paste since it will help the new paste flow into the imperfections in the heatsink/heatspreaders.
However, the temps on the new GE62 skylake gtx960m have been pretty awesome. I haven't seen a temperature greater than 70C, but that will probably change in the summer. I did remove the stock thermal paste and replace it with IC diamond. -
Wont it fit 3 M.2 SSD? There is one preinstalled so it should take another two. And is there a difference between the 128 and the 512? Because i have the 512 in my shopping cart ready to order
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yup, the GE62 Skylake has only 1 M.2 slot therefore please upgrade it wisely.epictwiglet likes this. -
An update: I brought up the hum issue with msi support and they sent me a bios update.
The update doesn't completely fix the hum, but it helps a little. The msi rep did offer to do an RMA, if that helps. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Looks like it's RMA time.
-
Good luck. You have to remove everything from the computer to get to the keyboard. Also the keyboard might not put properly -
Oh that sucks. Im very happy i got the Haswell version then! Except for the ****ty CPU :/ haha
-
That doesnt sound like fun at all.
On a side note, i see in your signature you have upgraded the heatsinks, how did that go and what kind of difference did it make? My CPU is still running too hot. -
It was probably done by the vendor. They just place small heatsinks (like for VRMs) randomly throughout the internals. It's not worth the money, especially in the newer MSI laptops which do a very nice job of cooling most of the hot components with heatspreaders.
if you're running too hot, then try applying better thermal paste (i recommend IC diamond), or undervolting. -
Is there any easy way to get past the135 max GPU OC(gtx 970m)?
-
sure, just flash a modified vbios
-
Yeah, seen that. Looking for that vbios
-
use gpu-z to extract your current vbios, then use something like nibitor to modify it and then nvflash to flash it
