    I installed Windows 7 on a GE62 2DQ Apache Pro 3 days ago.
So far, everything is working, and is running OK.

Did you load the Win7 utilities for your hardware? If not, here's download page link.

I only installed the steelseries software, as I dont use the rest, but thanks for the link.

BTW, I did repaste the CPU and GPU with MX-4, good news is that temps went down for a good margin:

    http://imgur.com/a/8x9E5

Max temps are after a fast 3dmark test, it also increased my score, and the fps from Hitman Absolution benchmark.

Bad news is that I broke some of the plastic tabs (dunno the english name) from the hinge cover. I dont find anything on eBay, where could I get a spare part?

    The temps are not bad.

For the plastic tabs, I think you are talking about the clips for the hinge cover which you can only get it from MSI directly.

Forgot to add that both CPU and GPU are overclocked.

I will have to get in contact with MSI I guess.

Hi guys, just a quick question - how can I switch this laptop to only use the dedicated nvidia card?

The laptop is the GE62-6QF-Apache-Pro and the issue is that the hdmi is controlled by the intel and that's causing a problem with the HTC Vive, I'm looking to disable the internal card in bios, since disabling it at the device-driver level doesn't seem to help. Thanks if anyone can help!

If video out is routed directly to the Intel chip, then you cannot disable it and consequently reroute things to the NVidia graphics. I can't recall whether this model was designed that way or not, but if so, you are stuck with the Intel GPU being your primary display adapter.

    Hello everyone,

I hope you could help me a bit. :)

I just bought a MSI 6QF Apache Pro,3 days ago, and I don't know whether this behaviour is normal or not since this is my first gaming laptop. So, so sorry for my low knowledge on the field.

Yesterday I was playing The Division at hight video settings and my charger started to become extremely hot, or at least for me....is that ok? Besides from the Dragon Gaming Center showed that the dGPU was working at 99% reaching temperatures both dGPU and CPU around 88ºC. What's the maximum possible?

Also, while playing XCOM2 I could notice that the graphic card fan was spinning out a bit faster and making a bit of noise.

Thank you very much for your answers!

Ok so for the last few days my laptop has been lagging really bad. Folders take their sweet time to open. Chrome and other sites takes minutes to open and basically everything is slow. I don't know if it has anything to do with nvidia? The ge force experience won't even show up anywhere for me. Nvidia control panel crashes after few seconds of opening it. I'm going crazy, please help.

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum. This might be a simple question with a straight answer. Does anybody know whether the Apache Pro has a skip (music) function on the keyboard? Or one that can be preset?

Unfortunately, it does not have that function.
Perhaps there's a 3rd party utility that may be able to do this, sort of like media control.

Not sure why you would like to do that, but you may try to set it in BIOS (/UEFI), there was an option for this, if i recall it correctly. Second option would be to disable the integrated one within Device manager. Not sure what would happen, if you tried.
You can set it in the SteelSeries profiler, but you would loose standard function of the key.
First remove Chrome :D try literally any other browser (thank me later). nVidia has its flaws and their drivers sometimes f*** up. It usually doesn't happen, but there is always a chance. Completely remove the driver, then delete nVidia Experience. Then try clean installation.

How did you install it? When I try to install it, it gives me the CD/DVD device driver missing error (even when I have all the drivers for windows 7 on my drive) and the msi magic wand tool thing doesn't seem to work for me...

Fixed the issue by installing ThrottleStop 8.10 and disabling BDPROCHOT (disabling processor throttling from other components on motherboard)

    Got the information from Tomshardware

Yeah, I'm installing it from a USB disk (tried with my copy of windows and a friends copy as well) through the usb 2.0 port but it gives me the error... Did you change anything in the bios?

You need to provide unzipped drivers for either USB 3.0 or other hardware.

Does anybody have problems with keys sticking? And not mechanically. The last key I press often holds so I get something like 'thisssssss'.

I have the BIOS setup as Legacy, because otherwise, it wouldnt even load the windows installer. I didnt do anything else, I installed USB 3.0 drivers after installation. I also had the wifi drivers in the USB drive, Windows didnt recognize the Wifi card (among some other things, but the I always download manually the latest drivers anyways).

Hello again :) I haven't resolved problem with battery drain, but I have new one. I don't remember since when I have this, in playing Guild Wars 2 when game is loading it shows static 2D screen with animated icon of loading. Then, when 3D game should be at the screen I have frozen loading screen and after about 5 seconds GPU indicator turns blue (Intel GPU). I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and then Cancel to load the game. This is not very frustrating, but now there is similar problem when waking up from sleep. I have orange GPU indicator, after a couple of seconds it turns blue but i don't have anything on the screen. Only black... Then i have to reset notebook, because nothing helps. I tried many drivers (3 versions of Intel, 5 of Nvidia) and nothing changes. I know, I can do format, but maybe someone has something like this and solve it in other way?

The reason to disable it (apart from that being standard practice for me, on my alienware, to use my Nvidia card without the Intel for a variety of compatibility and performance issues and switch to the intel if I need low power basic computing on battery) - is so that the HDMI has a direct line to the Nvidia instead of coming through the Intel system. It was causing problems with a VR headset. Thanks for your suggestions, we tried the device manager also without luck.

Hey guys. Would anyone happen to know where a replacement audio jack could be found? My friend/co-worker has a son that snapped the housing and sleeve ring (gold circular portion you can see) and asked if I could repair it. I do a lot of soldering and circuit design so this request is no problem... if the damn thing actually existed for purchase.

Please see below for an image of the component. I have thoroughly searched Mouser, Digikey, Kycon, CUI etc but am unable to find it. I have located a similar part but the pins need to be swapped.

Of course I do not care about having the oh-so-fancy gold-plated nonsense. As long as it will fit that's all that matters.

The component is lightly stamped with "xx1014", with the first x either being a 7 or 1 and the second a 5 or s. It shares the similar stamping of the other connectors (USB, HDMI etc) and seems to be internal use only as no relevant results can be found.

@Raliegh - A standalone replacement is going to be tough to source (as you've already alluded to). Have you tried any independent sellers on ebay or here at the NBR marketplace? You may need to purchase an identical - or similar - model motherboard up for sale as "for parts/not working" and take the jack from that.

Hey guys, just got a GE62 2QF, the model with the 970. It's been amazing so far, loving almost everything about the laptop, except for two things. One, there is a static (by static I mean unchanging, not white noise) high pitched noise whenever I plug in and use the headphones. It doesn't matter if the AC is plugged in or not, or if the system is under load or not. Whenever I use headphones, the noise persists.

As soon as I received the laptop, I did a clean install of windows, and I installed all of the necessary drivers from MSI's support page and updated them with driver tools, but the noise has always been there. Has anyone else had this problem?

The other problem I had, even before I reinstalled Windows, is the screen DPI settings. I've read on Windows 10 the DPI when you increase the display size of text and icons, it doesn't handle it as well as Windows 7 and 8. Some icons are blurry, and entire programs, such as Ableton Live, and most programs' windows during installation, are a little fuzzy as well. I've tried using the MSI Sizing Options tool, as well as the XP Explorer Windows 10 DPI fix tool, and neither have helped.

EDIT: Windows 10 DPI fix worked. Nevermind. But the headphone issue persists.

    • Hello, I have an issue with my brand new (literally arrived 2 hours ago) GE62 Apache Pro 6qd. Whenever I close the screen and then open it again, rather than go to the login screen, it displays a black screen, sometimes flashing. I have reinstalled the graphics card drivers to the most recent version. (364.something, I think)

    Hi guys, i have a GE62 6QD, I´ve replaced the hdd with a 850 evo and the m.2 with a 950 pro.
I´ve reinstalled windows 10, but I cant manage to install it on the 950.
I see the M.2 does not appear on the BIOS in either UEFI or UEFI CSM, it does in legacy mode.

In windows I can see both drives, and both are working correctly.
What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to do a clean install in the 950 (not a cloning solution)

My bios is E16J5IMS.109, should I update to E16J5IMS.10F?
    Thanks!!

It is more of a bloatware/spyware, then a browser :D i know a lot of ppl, who have problems with their computers and it is a lot of times caused by Chrome. Mainly because of multi-instancing and weird RAM handling. Yes it is true, that Chrome has gone very far way and is a lot better then it was, but it still seems bugged out. I still prefer Firefox, although it seems crappier with every update :/ :D

Gotcha. Just about every browser seems to have at least a couple of idiosyncrasies. I was fond of Opera before it switched to the Blink engine, but I'm with ya on Firefox now. There are some good forks of Firefox, too.

Hi guys, I recently bought a 4k tv and realise that the HDMI version of this notebook is 1.4 not 2.0 so i can't run 4k @ 60Hz, so I found this adapter on amazon that converts the mini display port 1.2 to HDMI 2.0, but I can't find anywhere the version of the display port in this notebook, so my question is: Which version of display port this notebook have?
If anyone tested the display port and achieved 4k @60Hz please let me know.

My model is the apache-276 with GTX 960m, and here is the link of the adpter:
    http://www.amazon.com/Club3D-Mini-D...0217&sr=8-4&keywords=display+port+to+hdmi+2.0

    Hi guys!

Is there any way to back up the notebook's current BIOS, or to download from somewhere the not newest verison? (I have a 2QE Apache Pro)
I'm asking it because the last time I updated it from the E16J1IMS.10B to the E16J1IMS.111 to have a new microcode for the Broadwell CPU (with the previous one it crashes during the use of Microsoft Office 2016), and after the update it started to crash randomly, even after Windows was reinstalled. My NB was at the local warranty service for 5 weeks and the only thing they could do was to replace the motherboard...
It might be a coincidence that it started to crash after the bios update, but I don't want to risk it again without having a recovery option.

    Thanks

Hello everyone, I am thinking of buying the MSI GE62 6QD and I have a few questions before proceeding:
    1. How good does it work with linux? I am planning on wiping windows entirely, so any known problems that would cause me troubles would be appreciated!
    2. Is there a BIOS setting to disable the nVidia GPU? Since I will be using linux, optimus does not really work well on dynamic switching and I am not really into gaming... so it would be great if I could just disable the GPU and use the Intel one!
    3. How many m.2 ports are available? How many of them are NVMe capable?
    4. What version of usb-c does it support? Is it USB 3.1 Gen.1 or Gen.2? Thunderbolt 3? DisplayPort over USB-C? I know the laptop already has a DP out, but if the USB-C supports that as well, this means that I can get dual 4K@60Hz, which HDMI 1.4b cannot!
    5. PowerDelivery over USB-C?
    6. Is the panel IPS or TN?
    7. What about the battery times? I have read some pretty bad reviews about it's power consumption, has anyone tested it with linux? What should I be expecting? Also, are there thermal issues? I will barely be using the GPU, since I mostly do CPU intensive stuff (compiling), would that be an issue?

    Thanks!

BIOS update does not crash applications such as Office 2016, the root cause could be something else such as memory, or hard drive itself.
As for the BIOS backup, you can do it using AMI Flash Utility to create a backup.

    1. It works with Linux if you are capable of figuring out the drivers for it.
    2. The system is Optimus-enabled therefore nVidia GPU cannot be disabled. But Intel HD graphics is always the default display whether you use Windows or Linux so this shouldn't be an issue.
    3. GE62 Skylake has 1x M.2 slot which is compatible with both SATA & NVMe (PCIe) signals.
    4. USB 3.1 Gen 2, without Thunderbolt 3, you can do DP over USB-C at 4K @ 30Hz or 60Hz depending on the adapter you purchase.
    5. PowerDelivery over USB-C is 5V/3A 15W.
    6. PLS panel (IPS-like technology).
    7. Battery time is about 2~3 hours depending on usage and settings. Not sure how Linux would fare but should be about the same. Thermal wouldn't be your concern if you are going to use CPU and its IGD most of the time.

Thanks for the reply and for the name of the tool!

It's not the bios update what caused the office 2016 crash but the broadwell processor itself, take a look at this:
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30...top-CPUs-incompatible-with-MS-Office-2016-etc

I updated to the newest BiOS because it came with newer microcode for the cpu and with that one it worked, but the windows itself started to crash afterwards with totally random bsod messages. I don't know whether it was cause by the update or by anithing else that occurred just after I updated the bios.

Backup your data, and then do a system reset/factory recovery.
    See if this helps.

    Well answering myself here.
I removed the 850, installed windows with the 950 being the only drive connected and after configuring windows installed the 850 again.
Everything working perfectly now. I now understand that the PCIE NVM drive does not appear in the BIOS setup.

Thanks for your reply, I doubt I will have any issues with getting linux to work correctly, though sometimes it's not up to the user (binary blobs of drivers not behaving correctly).
Would you happen to know how the display outputs are handled from the GPUs? Are they all going through the Intel graphics or are the DP/USB-C ports going through the nVidia GPU?
For more info on that you could read this wiki page.

With Optimus technology enabled systems, Intel HD is 100% your default display logically and electrically as well. Nvidia GPU is only a pass-thru accelerator using Intel Display circuitry. DP-port may provide direct Nvidia GPU access, except USB-C.

Is it normal that I get 1 hour's battery life playing Fallout 4?

And more importantly (work first!), does anybody else have problems with Microsoft Office programs crashing in Windows 10 when you try and save them?

    Hello everyone! First post here.

Does anyone have any issues with the subwoofer on the GE62 (specifically, I own the 2QD Apache Pro)? Anytime I start audio playback, the woofer takes a second to kick in. This happens with or without the Nahimic software installed/in use, and irrespective of which audio driver I use. Once the sub woofer starts in, it works consistently from there.

Windows 10 Home, by the way.

    Thoughts?

I just get a new MSI GE62 Apache Pro. It so good for me but there is a problem. When I open and close the LED there is some leakage near the camera on black screen. After open the LED no more leakage. Is this normal or not. Also when put my hand on back of display then looks like that light leakage.
Sorry for my bad English as I comes from rural area from India

Hello forum, I just recently ordered a
MSI GE Series GE62 Apache Pro-004 Gaming Laptop 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 2 GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 10 Home.
I decided to go with this build because the next option with ssd cost an extra $200. Figured I'll get this and install my own ssd down the line. My question now, can I install an ssd to this unit? I'm guessing I would need a M.2 SSD because I would like to keep the 1tb hhd in there along with ssd. Thanks for reading.

Create recovery discs first then restore it onto the new SSD.
Make sure the SSD is the only storage device during restoration before mounting other storage devices.
