That is odd because I know for sure other GE72 have had the multi color and pretty sure all new ones still do. (will have to double check on the most current models)
Reference our video review on the GE72 027 at 4:15 I'm going over the keyboard. Also the software on how to change the colors. Does your computer have that software?

I love mine and goes with my rival mouse. I also have no bleed through like others say, but I didn't want a 4k screen at 45mhz.

I don't have it with me. I bought it for my brother and the multi coloured keyboard was one of the reasons that made me choose this over the ROG GL551 :/

I don't remember seeing the software anywhere. Also it seems, others have fallen for the bait too (reviews on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152925 ). I was under the assumption too, that the GE series came with the multi colored backlit keyboard.

Is there any way I can change only the keyboard? Seems like a bit too much but can't really reason with kids.

The software is preinstalled and usually has a shortcut on the task bar. I am not sure if you can get just a multicolor keyboard. That would be something to contact MSI about.

The GE72 in our video review is from a couple revisions ago so they may have changed them to just white now.

Look for Steelseries software, and if can't locate go download engine version 3 from their website. I have Apache Pro and mine is RGB and any other color.

Newegg SKU sometimes are exclusive for Newegg customers only and they tend to lean toward more price breaks. I couldn't find that SKU on MSI USA website.

The only bad thing about the keyboard backlight is that in reality there are only 3 sections and the keyboard is divided to thirds so my expectations that i could highlight a few keys was very misleading. I ended up with whole keyboard red as it looks great with the rest of the NTB and bcs it gives it the military look and feel like when battleship goes to battle mode and lights shine red to be less visible from distance :)

There is an Apache-264 on XoticPC as well ( http://www.xoticpc.com/msi-ge72-apache264-p-8573.html ).
The gallery shows a multi color backlit keyboard.
Also, there is no Apache-264 listed officially anywhere on MSI, so where am I supposed to find drivers? This is confusing.

Agreed, I've seen this too but they will have a unique model number.
However this model is for everyone, as Outsmash mentioned we carry them and a few other resellers do too.

The drivers don't necessarily have to be model specific down to the 264 number. The GE72 drivers for the GTX 960M and Wn 8.1 should work http://us.msi.com/support/nb/GE72-Apache-GTX-960M-4.html#down-driver&Win8.1 64

That's great, thanks! Also what SSD goes with the GE72. I know it's m.2 but I heard there are some other factors to look into. I was looking this Samsung one: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-250-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/

Seems quite reasonable but would it work?

Has anyone had a problem with the steelseries quick launch button not working? Everything else on the machine works fine including all the functions of the steel series engine. Seems that it has a faulty button.i just bought it from Xoticpc and trying to avoid ha vying to send it back for repair or replacement. I do not like being without my computer. Does anyone ha be a tear down guide or assembly guide or any information?

    Thanks

It might be helpful if you told us what it does or does not. I take it as it just does nothing. First try downloading up2date steelseries. Then if it won't help look at your keyboard setup in the steelseries app and check if the button has its function set. If not add to it its function: launch configuration -> [ntb name] -> [next keyboard profile name]. After that when you press the button it should switch to next profile. You have to set this button in every profile individually.

If you just want to test if it works assign to in simple command like shutdown or sleep. Then if you press the key and your ntb shuts itself down tkey works.

You could also add another 128GB to match your stock m.2 and RAID 0 them. Not quite the size you're looking for but more speed.

    Hi everyone!
I am about to buy this awesome laptop with the 5th gen i7 and the GTX 960 but I am worried about the fan noise doing normal tasks.
Is it noisy when idling, browsing internet and doing office work? I have tested the GS60 before and I found quite annoying that the fans were spinning all the time and quite loud just by browsing internet. Is the GE62 quieter than the GS60?

    Thanks in advance!

If you are just doing normal tasks like office work then the fan shouldn't kick on constantly but rather intermittently. When enough heat builds up then fan kicks on, but most of time it should stay off if nothing exciting is happening.

This is a dumb question but how do I take advantage of the 7.1 SPDIF output. What cable do I need and where do I plug it in?

Steel Series Engine 3 is much better than keyboard led manager. Everybody should install SteelSeries. I loved it. Btw should I update my bios? Is it important?

Yes this laptop throttles under heavy load. GTA V throttles the CPU fairly heavily. No issues with GPU throttling. I disabled turbo boost and temps dont rise about 78c usually 72-75 for CPU and GPU. Hope that helps.

After disabling CPU turbo boost no issues with throttling at all.

For 7.1 channel support via SPDIF, you will need to use software such as PowerDVD to output via SPDIF.

Yes, it's recommended since newer BIOS/EC may contain fixes/enhancement.
For example, this is a sample part of a log.
    1. Update ME FW version to 9.1.30.1008.
    2. Fix flash BIOS in not auto load default setting.
    3. Support Windows 10 Recovery.

I have written a short guide, click the guide link in my signature ;)

EDIT: I have a question to you all. Does this ntb have UEFI? I never had computer with UEFI and years back, i have read somewhere, that it should contain browser and other stuff - that it is more like functioning OS, then just the core of notebook. When i booted it up to update it, it looked exactly like the old one. Everything blue, just text and settings.

Notebooks use UEFI but due to the limited bios feature set they expose the interface is kept looking the old way as it's easy to navigate.

All laptops comes with UEFI now and it's replacing the old BIOS, but you can still switch between legacy and EUFI mode. Most manufacturer even enable the CSM (Compatible System Module) to simulate UEFI using Legacy mode, that helps users who still preferred Windows 7 OS for fast boot.

What you read about the UEFI with OS-like is just the user interface and it's not a actual OS and they only exist on desktop motherboards not laptops.

    Firmware update is risky.
So the top reason is to make sure the system is stable, if it's not stable then performing firmware update can be riskier.
The BIOS/EC firmware package contain software utility needed to perform update, simply download each package, extract it, then run flash (a batch file).
If you get to this part but still not sure what to do, feel free to post a picture and ask us.

Has anyone gotten Ubuntu to run on their machine? I have searched the web and tried everything suggested from changing the BIOS/UEFI settings to trying different distros (14.04 LTS and 15.04). I have tried using the pen drive method exclusively. Sometimes the setup program will load and then hang at some point in the process, but mostly it just runs a bunch of MS DOS looking queries and hangs.

I have gotten mint to install, but it will randomly hang and it doesn't save anything permanently so I uninstalled it.

I would prefer to use Ubuntu, but this machine just isn't having it. Help!

Anyone know how to bind more functions to a key? I wanted to switch PageUp and PageDown with Home and End, which was possible, but now i dont have PGUP and PGDN. Is it possible to just reverse it instead of removing those two functions, like instead pressing PGUP = PGUP and Fn + PGUP = Home, to have pressing PGUP = Home and Fn + PGUP = PGUP. I didn't find a way to do so.

Well I have been using this laptop about a week now , allthough i have had it a wee bit longer, i was in the middle of a house move so i didn't unbox it until i had moved.

    Plus points

1 The screen, its so rich colour wise , no lag . My Previous laptop is a 2011 Mac Book Pro and that has a nice screen, I would say I prefer the MSI.

2 Gaming, well no surprise there since its a gaming laptop. I have played Diablo 3 with max setting and World of Warcraft everything on Ultra(well I used the Nvidia experience to change it) Wow is giving me 90+ FPS. Haven't tried anything else.

3 its fast and im actually kinda liking Windows 8.1 not as bad ive been using windows 7 on my Desktop pc for the last 4 odd years and have no desire to downgrade the MSI, no sure if ill upgrade to 10 though.

    Minus

1 The Cpu fan can get to loud, I read a post here that said put the processor max to 99% in the power options, oh i use balance that seems to have helped a great deal and now the cpu once i exit a game is around 65c

Oh i just found this if anyone is interested

"Silent Option" Fan Control Application for MSI Laptops
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=256234.0

2 Upgradabilty dont get me wrong its all there 2 extra PCI sata slots extra Dim, I had a lot of trouble removing the base of the laptop when i installed extra ram and 2x Transcend 2280 256GB sata, so much so that i installed a extra Seagate SSHD into the DVD bay.

3 The screen lid feels a bit flimsy im extra careful when i open it

4 The sound is a bit tiny(like tin with a e on the end) I had a look on these forums but the link to fixing your sound is a GT72 thread 144 pages long i will have to look into it later, Also I couldnt install the Nahimic software but it gave me a error saying Audio drivers need to be installed first?

Overall I love this laptop i can see it lasting me a good 4 years , I went out and got a custom Keyboard Cover for it upgraded the ram and the disks, all in all great laptop

I have the Haswell Cpu in mine not the latest broadwell.

    9/10

i will post photos later as im at work.

Download audio driver from here: http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GE62-2QF-Apache-Pro-4.html#down-driver
It gave me the same error too. Installing the driver fixed it.

I'm guessing only a handful of people on the planet are trying to run linux on these things so there definitely isn't much information floating around. You can find some info here, although not ge62 related
    https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Fedora-22-Good-For-5775

You can try out openSUSE and report back. The only distro I know is stable is Fedora, but I'm sure there are others out there. By the way you can test it out in a virtual machine if that is easier. Ubuntu, Debian, and Mint will all result in windows BSODs if you have them running for some time in a virtual machine, the crashes seem kind of random. You may also manage to gain some stability in Ubuntu and Mint by disabling cpu bios features, although I'd just try sticking to a distro you find stable for now.

Hi guys! I just got mine today and I have a quick "First Hour" review for anyone that might be interested!

To start things off, my configuration is the following:

    Intel Core i7-5700HQ 2.7 GHz
16 GB of DDR3 1600 Mhz Dual Channel RAM
    Nvidia GTX 970m 3GB
1TB 7200 RPM HDD - I will install an SSD shortly
    Windows 10 Home - came pre-installed
Full HD 1920x1080 Matte type Screen
    Weight: 2.4KG
Cost: Indian Rupees 1,30,000. which is US$ 2000
Rest is all the standard configuration as per MSI Website such as SteelSeries keyboard etc.

Ok so the major competitors to this laptop with regard to my choice were the Alienware 15, Lenovo Y50-70 and the Asus G501. I did not choose the Alienware because it has severe ghosting issues and I did not want to deal with any of that. The Lenovo just did not impress me as much as the MSI. And lastly the Asus model was a no-go because of its 4K screen which has terrible yellow reproduction as well as being locked to 48Hz. I simply loved the specs of the MSI GE62 2QF Apache Pro in the first glance and it was definitely my number one choice. Apart from these laptops, I did not have much choice as many brands such as Sager and Razer and not available in India.

Anyway, so I will go on with my "First Hour" Experience:

    • The laptop came in premium packaging - a beautiful box that held the contents well. The laptop was kept in a nice cloth bag and overall the packaging was pretty decent. No complaints here.
    • There was also a free laptop bag provided with MSI branding all over it. I cant say its premium quality but its good for a freebie. I will eventually buy a new laptop bag though.
    • The laptop itself is of premium quality. The build quality is excellent, the black colored aluminium looks amazing. The laptop is light and good enough to carry in your backpack and work on your lap. The only thing I found not so good was the thinness of the screen. It is quite flexible so you should handle it with care. Not a dealbreaker for me as I take utmost physical care of my toys. Overall, i love the build quality, feels sturdy and decent.
    • The keyboard is truly amazing. The keys are great - I am typing this whole review on my new laptop and it feels really good! I can definitely see myself typing long essays on this great keyboard. The steel series engine give great lighting options which makes your keyboard even more shiny. If you're a cat and like shiny things to play with, then you will love this keyboard. Only complain I have is that the layout is a bit weird - but I will get used to it and its not a dealbreaker.
    • The trackpad is average, the surface does not glide flawlessly, I think MSI should have done a better job with the trackpad but I can deal with it as the overall quality of the laptop is good.
    • Temperatures our of the box were a steady 45-50 degrees Celsius for CPU which is quite ok. I have not yet gotten a chance to put some load on this machine since this is a first hour review so I can't say about under-load CPU and GPU temps although I think they should be good too. The fans are absolutely silent on minor load such as posting on this forum and listening to songs on Winamp.I don't really mind the fans making noise as long as they keep my machine cool but as I said before I have not yet gotten a chance to test it under load.
    • The speakers are a REAL disappointment. All that Dynaudio and Nahimic Sound is ********. Well its not such a big thing for me as I absolutely do not expect notebook speakers to be any good. I'm always using either headphones or external speakers. So again even though speakers are bad, not a dealbreaker for me.
    • The laptop came with some bloatware but nothing you cannot uninstall such as Norton and a few other freebies. If you wish to do a clean re-install of Windows, go ahead with it but I'm ok with just uninstalling the things I do not need. The MSI software is great and very useful, you may not find a need to remove these.
    • Windows 10 has some scaling and font issues where text on older software looks a bit blurred. I am sure this is just a Windows 10 issue as the matte full HD screen of the laptop is gorgeous. The colors out of the box are not great, but with one flick you can change it to "Gamer" mode and the colours are suddenly amazing. No complaints here.
Quick Update boys: Ran Crysis 3 for half an hour and got 60+ FPS throughout at full HD ultra settings. Temps stayed constant at 80 degrees celcius for CPU and 68 for GPU. All in all, this sounds great for a quick game test!

Quick Update 2: Amazing viewing angles! The screen is absolutely gorgeous. The trackpad is not as bad as I first found it to be. Looks like I had to clip my nails a bit and now that my fingers are nice the trackpad is great! Still cant get gestures to work though. The body of the whole laptop is really subject to a lot of fingerprints and smudges - you will have to wipe it with a cloth regularly. Temperatures are great! 45-50 CPU when idle and just around 70 under load...awesome!

So guys thats my first hour review of this amazing machine and I hope you find it helpful. I will keep testing out this beautiful thing over the month and definitely give you all some insight. If anyone is thinking of buying this one I say go for it, its value for money. Let me know if anyone of you need me to test something specific on this laptop. I have just joined this forum but I frequent this thread everyday. Lastly, here are some pictures:

    Hi guys!

My new MSI GE62 has just arrived. I tried it, it's fast and works very good. Except one thing, the speakers... When I try to play any kind of sound on the notebook, the first thing I hear is a creaking noise (like when you put in a jack), than after a few miliseconds second my speaker starts working, and about a sec later the subwoofer joins in. But when using my headphones, theere is o problem. I assume this phenomenon is not normal. Has anyone of you encountered something similar? Is there a way to solve it?

How were you guys able to underclock this laptop's CPU and have the setting stick. On XTU I downclock but when I'm in game the cpu just re-overclocks itself. I've disabled dragon center's sport mode too. Also put it on balanced power setting and cpu maximum at 99% (to prevent turbo boost) but it still ramps itself up. When the temps reach high it's uncomfortable to use.

Edit: I think I figured it out, you've got to use the basic feature on XTU and not the advanced menu. For some reason, it doesn't underclock properly.
