Hello guys I just bought this laptop, has anyone managed to fix the fans always running even when idle issue? I installed the latest firmware updates and dos a clean windows install. For me dragon centre is not able to shut down the cpu fan even at low temperatures. I hear it running in Eco mode when cpu is at 2% load and 36c.

Hi everyone, I didn't plan on posting but changed my mind since I read this thread beginning to end and it helped me a lot with what to expect. I bought the gs63vr 041 from Newegg during black friday week for $1449, a major upgrade to my old 2009/10 Asus g51vx-x3a. Of course anything modern is going to thrill me but I didn't like the cheap feel of the Asus ROG Strix series or sadly the unprofessional orange wasd keys. Anyways here is my experience.
Chassis - I didn't have any glaring defects. No gaps to fit credit cards into, no sharp edges, no warped or oddly angled touchpad/keys. Only occasionally a slight creak if I pinch the front right corner. The thermal padding on the bottom is a little scratchy near the edges.
Screen - The only floor model I could find before purchasing was at Best Buy and I was not impressed with the screen. This version is much more pleasant, however I don't plan on opening it up to find the model number.
Noise - Really not complaining with about the fans. I can't hear any high pitched noises under 1900rpms. Yes they crank up to turbines when gaming but that's what 4000+ rpm is going to sound like. If you want the fans to turn completely off just go into the dragon center and change the speed to 0% over in the blue temp area. There is still an apparent residual noise which is the HDD making more noise than the fans at any normal/lower temps. On battery power this shuts off and my laptop is virtually silent unless I stick my head right against the vents in the top.
I also get a pretty constant and annoying coil whine in performance mode. However switching to balanced mode takes care of this. If there's whining during heavy use, the fans cover it up. I haven't noticed any drop in performance by using Balanced mode with modified settings.
Storage - My m2 is a Toshiba HG6. I haven't even accessed the HDD as I plan to replace it as soon as I find a good deal on an 850 evo. I'd like to replace the HG6 but that will have to be later.
Performance/Heat - Really nothing to report here yet since I won't install anything too graphically intense until I get the larger ssd. My temps only got into the high 60s under moderately high load so far. When doing office work or watching movies it keeps in the 40s or less.
Minor complaints
Stutters - are a little annoying. I'm wondering if it has to do with the bloatware since it seems to occur when I'm using MSI software for the most part. However, it's still nothing compared to what I'm used to.
Touchpad - could be better but it will do. I honestly prefer a little smaller so it's easier to type. Some basic gestures work like pinch to zoom and a double finger swipe activates forward/back
Keyboard - a bit oddly sized/placed but still nice. Thankfully it's easy to remap the keys.
Audio - it's definitely not apple or even my old Altec Lansing speakers from the Asus but it's what I expected. I disabled Nahimic and it's 'okay.'
The last thing is that those red LED's on the front for num/caps lock ect feel more like lasers instead of indicator lights.
Overall the portability and hopefully more robust construction were the selling point to me so as long as I get a decent lifespan out of it I should be a happy customer.shubham_2206 and selvedge like this. -

For anyone having fan issues (always running even when idle), I found a fix!
You have to update EC firmware drivers, use the proper settings in dragon centre, and throw out your hdd!
I just disabled mine waiting to receive a new ssd one to replace it, and when doing pretty much anything apart from gaming, I don't hear fans anymore...

I installed latest nvidia gpu drivers and latest intel hd gpu drivers uninstalled dragon uninstalled scm and reinstalled again now fans spins less..
You would be surprised but even nvidia drivers causes this as there are processes running in background.. -
Monitor Name: LG Philips LP156WF6 (Dell 3874Y)
Monitor ID: LGD046F
Which model is in the Best Buy version? Isn't mine the same screen as the Asus gl502vs? -
yes its the same screen as asus gl502vs -

btw have you notice the electric noise near the middle of the keyboard when the fan is silent? -
I just noticed my screen is the lg lp156wf6. Some reviews say that it doesn't display colours properly as it has only 60% rgb... Can anyone pitch in or confirm? I payed my machine 2000€ so I'm expecting a little better for this money...
-
LGD046F is the better one. -

Haven't noticed an electric noise in the middle, but when I scroll on my trackpad I hear a faint crackling noise/static coming from the right side of the laptop. Kinda like an electrical connection that is not well in place.... -

please help!
Where can I buy the good full hd screen without PWM?
Please give me the full model name as well as a link to a shop where I can look it up
thanks! -

The worst one which is the first one seems only a exclusive version in best buy. - 001us
The second LG display is the most popular one. Newegg and amazon both sell this kind the most. - 068us, 034us
The samsung one is not PWM free but has the best color accuracy, seems very few people get it and I am not sure the model
So conclusion, don't buy the cheapest version from best buy you can avoid the first crappy LG display. And you are less likely to get a samsung one from newegg and amazon. -
How about the build quality guys ? in particular - keyboard flex. how bad/good is it ? -

Gutted...
RIP GS63VR-6RF....
Some how it seems to have fried itself. Was charging, turned it off, turned it on (or tried to) later on and nothing. Pressed the reset button on the back, nothing.
Reconnected the charger, no light...
11 days old.....
On a positive my retailer was awesome about it (alza.cz) and the new one should arrive today/tomorrow. -

I just replaced the secondary hdd with an 850 evo. Disassembly and reassembly were a bit of a pain but I didn't break any tabs. Everything worked normally except the power light (red/orange gpu indicator) which now doesn't turn on. Before I take the bottom off again, is there some kind of setting that might have reset itself?
The only two ribbons I disconnected were the white and yellow ones that cover the hdd. Perhaps I didn't plug the white one in all the way and that's cause? I can't think of anything else as I didn't mess with anything other than the hdd. -

Do you guys know what part numbers the 4k panel and the 40pin edp cable are? I'd like to upgrade 1080p to 4k panel. Thanks.
-
After researching, the 4k panel i need to buy is LP156UD1-SPB1 (same one used in gs63vr 4k version). But i still don't know what 40pin edp cable i should use. I know that the panel require 0.5m pitch cable. I really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Just a quick update:
I repasted the CPU and GPU with thermal grizzly conductonaut and undervolt CPU, the temp decreased at least 15C, and even more during load. Watching YouTube video will keep under 40C now.(Ambient temp is 24C)
Here is the guide I use to set up fan. Thanks to @sadistic_angel on Reddit. With this setting, daily usage of GS63 is basically silent.
My only gripe now:
1. When use HDMI to connect external monitor, seems there is no way to use Intel integrated HD530. So the GTX1060 will come up and generate more heat when I actually only need integrated GPU.
2. Speaker, speaker, speaker is weak (It's important so to speak triple times). Even old GS60 had Dynaudio speaker and I couldn't see why GS63 and GS73 cannot.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
Why does best buy always have to cut down somewhere...i rememberi bought a vaio s form them in 2011 and it had a blu ray drive but the worst display possible.....I screwedup by not reading up on this thread and trusting that all the GS63 where the same...so im back in the US next week but i left the box in Miami. And heade to NJ, will be bakc in Miami after the 30 day return window so i guess im screwed, anyone tinker with the color profiles a bit see if we can get abit more out of this display, I dont do video nor photo editing i just find it a bit too cool colorwise....If anyone has done something like this let me know...or maybe later on swap the screen to a better one may be an option my GS60served me well for a bit over 2 years and i wasstill enjoying it. Also anyone manage to put an NVME Hd on their gs63vr, mine came with a m2 sata drive, i did put a second drive in the GS60 and upgraded to 16gb instead of 12 also took out the 750gb dirve it came with and put a 1tb ssd on it. Planning on doing the same with the GS63...I like the smaller footprint also on battery i set my processor to mas 50% on the GS60 and gained almost an hour of regular(web, youtube, headphone) use. Doing the same here and its whisper quiet on battery, i did notice the first night that fan noise is a bit more. but im using this laptop mainly for gaming i have a 2014 mbp for work.

Happy almost Christmas everyone. I'm hoping someone with the 120hz model of the MSI Stealth Pro 73vr can provide me with an ISO or some way to restore my laptop to factory settings. I did a clean Windows install, but buyers remorse has set in. I want to return it, but need to get it back to factory settings. Can someone provide an ISO from their software and then upload it to a cloud service? I could throw $20 your way over Venmo or Paypal. Would really appreciate your help.

Hi there, i just bought the laptop, -001US model(i guess it is from best buy). Couple of days playing with it and totally happy. Had issues with wifi turning off, but solved that by disabling energy saving modes from where i could find. Just to mention it's a refurbished model, no high pitched noises from cooling system, everything is perfectly fine. I set a custom curve for gpu boost 3.0 and the gpu doesn't go above 75 C under load maintaining 1709Mhz, with cooler boost option in dragon center it stays at 71 C. Cpu without undervolting is around 69-75 at load. Speakers are totally fine imo, no bass, but the sound is nice and crisp, nothing terrible as some people said or different reviews mentioned. 4 hour on battery with screen brightness 50% is what i got, watching youtube and some other tasks. I cannot complain about the screen, as i am coming from a far wors machine, and the screen is worlds away on msi, even though it is the panel everybody so much hates in this thread and in reviews.
Can anybody advise me how to set scaling in windows properly so there will not be blurred text in some apps?
Also post your experience with playing games, gpu - temperatures/frequencies, cpu - what kind of undervolt can i get out of it?. How will undervolting affect battery life, if at all. -
-
1. just use 100% (or 125% isn't that bad imo)
2. disable scaling on those blurred text apps
-
Can you tell what kind of frequencies do you get while gaming at what temps and fan rpm?
Btw, cpu temps while watching videos on youtube with multiple tabs and other stuff is around 32-36 C. Fan is non-audible. -
