Thank you for the response, in a perfect world that would work great. Unfortunately, to send support a question I need to register my laptop, but the registration fails because I have a refurbished laptop and the registration tool fails because it says my S/N is already in use. I'm sure I could spend a few hours in technical support hell getting that cleared up, but I was hoping to avoid it if possible. :)

Haha, I see, the perfect storm. Email might not be the best route to start in your case but getting started on the phone shouldn't be too terrible if you explain where you're at and get a case number to communicate on.

Some people got it and some don't, possibly a RMA option to get MSI to replace the defective fan.
But best to call MSI support directly to find out if that's the case.

Hey guys, new to the forum here. Purchased the GS63VR (with 4K screen) from Memory Express here in Canada yesterday and right out of the box I noticed the left speaker didn't sound right. Upon closer inspection, it sounds like as if it's been blown or possess a very persistent crackling when in use. I went ahead as far as uninstalling all the drivers and reinstalling everything, as well as disabling Nahimic altogether but to no avail. I brought it back to the shop today wishing to get an exchange but the salesperson told me it's like that for every unit out there and that MSI released a patch to the shops that they can apply which will fix or help with the situation, which apparently us consumers are not able to find on their website). I handed it to the technician and after the application of the apparent patch, it appears to be ever so slightly better but I'm still nowhere near happy about it. Otherwise it's a great laptop, plenty of performance, and a decent 4K panel to boot.

Anyone having the same issues and any recommendations?

I heard the 4k panel has very poor contrast ratio like 350:1. Can you confirm it ?

TBH I'm not an expert when it comes to displays, all I can say is I can certainly see the downgrade in this department as I moved from a Dell XPS 15 with that gorgeous 4K screen, the only thing I prefer over the screen on the Dell is that it's got a matte coating I.e less glare. I read reviews about the contrast ratio of the screen too before I made the purchase and I was worried but as soon as I saw it in store and played around with it a bit I honestly thought it's fine for what I need it for. I play games and consume media on it mostly and I don't see that the 'poor' contrast ratio has affected me in those areas thus far. Your aight perception could be more sensitive than mine though so I would go see one in person if you can.

Thanks for the reply man. Glad you are happy with this notebook!
I really like the way it looks, the thin silouette, the rgb keyboard. I really want to buy this but not sure if the display will be good enough for me. I heard people saying that the fullhd panel has poor colors and pwm, yet the 4k display has poor contrast. No idea what to choose.

Could anyone comment on whether this laptop has a screen that uses PWM?

I am sensitive to it and it would be a deal breaker.

The review noteboook check says it does use PWM, but the OP seems to go against this?

To me it was a simple choice, I knew there're flaws with both the 1080p and the 4K displays (even though I was aware more of the 1080p ones than the 4K). For some reason here in Canada, the price difference between the 2 models was around CAD$150 and on top of that the 4K model gets a 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD instead of the 256GB SSD + 1TB HHD on the 1080p model, so to me that really was a no brainer. Really the only issue I have with the laptop so far is the speakers but I think I'll learn to live with it, hopefully it's a driver/software issue that they'll be able to fix completely in the future but other than that I'd say go for it man, whichever model suits your budget, you're gonna be happy with either I think.

There are two FHD IPS panels. One has 65% sRGB with no PWM. The other is 92ish% sRGB and has PWM. I had the crappy color version and it came from Best Buy. It was definitely a deal breaker for me. I could live with the other screen as I've seen it on other models. But if PWM bothers you that bad, best to avoid it.

The 4k screen is 98% sRGB and doesn't have PWM. But as someone mentioned before, I measured a 360:1 contrast ratio at full brightness. It still looks really good but the blacks are very bright, so it throws off the ratio a lot. It's hard to compare this to the XPS 15 screen because that one is full gamut and this one isn't. The difference is night and day, but gaming on the XPS 15 screen is a joke. The ghosting is about as bad as it gets. If MSI were to use that screen, it would have been a mistake.

    Hi guys,

I spent hours reading all the 42 pages and it was really enjoyable all that amount of knowledge. However, I still have a concern. I'm currently have a MacBook Pro late 2013 since... 2013 and I'd like to get a really thin and light laptop so this one is amazing. But regarding the screen, is that really terrible? People who have the 4k are ok with the quality? — I mean for photo editing for example — or is it better to get an ok 1080p and buy an external 4k external screen to plug with HDMI? Also, does the battery drops significantly with the 4k screen?

Thanks a lot for all your dedication on this thread guys :)

Edit : does it worth the extra 3-500 bucks from the gs43vr? Tricky question...

Can anyone confirm that the fullhd screen actually uses pwm ? the only reference I found that it does is the review from http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GS63VR-6RF-Stealth-Pro-Notebook-Review.179761.0.html.
All other reviews say that the fullhd screen is very nice, I've watched many (if not all) videos and could not visually identify that the pwm is present. Maybe if someone could actually do a video test and upload it that'll be superb, ty all !

I had the same doubt regarding the screen. But went ahead and bought the 1080p version and it looks great (not as great as you get in a macbook though). GPU is good enough to run all games at 1080p. For occasionally viewing 4K content, I'll use the thunderbolt port to connect an external monitor.

There are a lot of folks who either don't know what pwm is, are not sensitive to it or even know how to detect it. Chances are, if you go off of people's opinions, you could still end up with a pwm model.

Since you know you don't want it, you should probably focus on what model you do want and find out the part number for the panel. I already have the numbers for the -001 best buy model and the 4k. Then do a Google search of the part number followed by pwm. Chances are there is a NBC review with the test results, since they check for it in pretty much every laptop they review. A lot of these panels are used in other laptops so there's a lot of info on them. If there isn't, you'll just have to take the chance on it I guess. Hopefully you're in an area with a decent return policy.

So that's a good news! Which model do you have? Currently on best buy.ca, there is a reseller that sells the 008 and 010 if I have a good memory.
But now, I'm struggling between the 43VR — the price is at 1700cad — while the 63VR is at 2100cad unfortunately...

Edit : if we open the MSI computer — America or Canada — to change the HDD, does it break the warranty? Some people are saying yes, others no...

I have GS63VR, not sure if it is 008 or 010 or something else. Mine has 256 GB PCIe SSD + 1 TB HD (5400 RPM). If you want to change the HDD, you can take it to the store and get it done from the MSI people which will not void the warranty. I spoke the MSI retailer here in India and they confirmed that it's best to have it replaced by them (free of cost).

Not sure about PWM. I use my laptop for 3-4 hours straight everyday and never felt any discomfort. If this is something that concerns you, better go to the store and use it for some time if that's possible. Since there are different versions being sold in different countries by different stores, it won't help much if I said mine doesn't have PWM as you may end up with one which has.

is the integrated gpu detected? Make sure it's not the basic adapter in device manager. I don't think it'll let you install nvidia drivers without Intel's being installed.

Just dropped the trigger on one of these, need a laptop been weeks cant wait for the alienware 13 any longer, whats the general consensus with the bloatware?

I was thinking just format and reinstall bloat free windows out the box?

Fairly soon I'll be putting a 1tb nvme ssd in as well so may as well re - paste as well while its apart.

anyone done an SSD upgrade or re paste on these? be good to know you results.

Yup pretty much done that except for the latest nvidia drivers

I for one am really happy with this laptop the CPU fan aint that bad for me, first OC on the 1060 i got over 10k in firestrike, not too shabby GPU hit 71c gotta be pleased with that.

Did i get lucky with the ssd i got a samsung 256gb pulling 2137 / 1160 read and write? (SM951 cant complain at that)

Build quality is fine (a LOT better than my returned AW17 r4 & on par with my 17r3), no bleed on the panel (FHD) samsung, runs 1080p games awesome and nice and portable feels more like a macbook that a gaming laptop, just what the doctor ordered... lol

whats the deal with putting a basic ssd in as the storage drive? regards warranty?

Just got my gs63vr today, the CPU fan doesn't sound right to me, i have a ratting sound that only comes from the CPU fan.

    Fans on high speed:

Only CPU fan, auto fan setting:

What you guys think, is this normal or time for a return?

Hi guys, I have a really quick question. if someone knows that would be great. Where does Origin source it's version of the GS63VR. Cause no offense MSI, your laptops look better without all the branding and logos on them. I was wondering if I would be able to source a barebones GS63VR like the Origin one without the logo and branding. Unless MSI has an exclusive with Origin?

Just sharing this in case someone else has issues,

I just swapped out the sm951 / 256gb for a pm961 / 1Tb, changed the wifi over to a intel 8260, put a 2tb 850 evo in the 2.5 bay and repasted the CPU & GPU with Grizzy kryonaught.

The strip down was really easy in the end took about an hour all in.

then i nearly **** myself..... lol i put her back together = no screen , powered on ok but.... *** *** *** so had to press battery reset to get it to power off as well.
so i took it apart again.

I hadn't pushed the screen ribbon connector in quite far enough , no problem, anyways no power at all now, would turn on at all , no lights nothing... Dead

tried all combinations, batt out, batt in, AC out, AC in the whole nine yards, thought i had fried it some how...... RESET battery like 10 times.

hold power button in 25 seconds... nothing

In the end I disconnected battery & AC out held batt reset for 30 seconds, then hold power for over 1 minute.

put battery in and AC in and its all up and running, Kinell i was worried but all ok now.

    Update ;
30 mins Intel XTU stress test & Heaven looping on ultra
    before repaste - CPU 90c & 76c GPU
    After repaste - CPU 85c & 76c GPU

    One hour battlefield 1
    before repaste - CPU 89c & 76c GPU
    After repaste - CPU 82c & 75c GPU

UPDATE Undervolted cpu Using Intel XTU by -0.155
30 mins Intel XTU stress test & Heaven looping on ultra

repaste & Undervolt - CPU 76c & 71c GPU :D, and MUCH quieter (the best bit)

Might just be me but it seems quieter now and fans ramp down quicker, made a nice difference and as it was a simple job i think I'll do a Liquid metal re paste soon.

Whatever happened to quality control!? Recent purchases with electronics has been nothing short of frustrating. Bad pixels on Dell S2715DG (7 out 9 had problems and had to be return/exchanged just to get 2 good ones) and razer keyboards with sticky keys 2 out 4. And now 2 out 2 for the MSI GS63VR has bad memory. Sorry for the rant, but this has been most frustrating.

My first GS63VR seemed alright at first. Ran game benchmarks fine, gets the expected scores for the GTX1060. But then it started to random blue screen. One time it even corrupted the windows 10 install and wouldn't boot. That is when decided to really check things. Run memtest86 (passmark memtest ver 7.1 latest as of now) and within minutes it was spewing errors in excess of 60K+ all over the place. Needless to say this thing when back to Best Buy.

So now on to my second GS63VR. Runs memtest86 for a full 4/4 pass no error. You'd think things are good right? Install all the other software games, etc. But now that I've been nervous about things, I run more memtest overnight. I get 1 error out of 8 passes of memtest86. Run it again on another night, no errors. Try it again on another night and I get another error out of 8 passes of memtest86, this time at test 7 in contrast to test 13. For couple I try just hammering test 7 and 13 and I get no errors. Try it another night, I get 1 error at the same address location for 1 out the 8 passes again.

What is someone supposed to do about this kind of intermittent error that is just so hard to find? Has anyone else encountered memtest86 errors on their GS63VR? Is this common place? Has MSI picked a bad supplied in these Kingston MSI24D4S7S8MB-8 DDR4-2401 memory? To date I've not had a single blue screen or abnormal windows behavior in my regular day time use when I am not testing the memory.

I really wish there was way to change the wait states, fall back to say cas latency 18, or bump the voltage or something to work around this. I noticed that my first GS63VR was running with bios version E16K2IMS.10A whereas the second one is running the slightly older E16K2IMS.109. So it make me really nervous as to whether if I should even attempt to go to E16K2IMS.10A which may just screw myself over and cause the memory to fail in lots of places. Any advice, guidance, or moral support is welcome.

BTW thanks for letting me rant.

Windows Update provides basic drivers with minimal functionality and they aren't the latest and greatest.

Just running some firestrike tests getting 10'113 with an OC of 230/500 on the 1060.

temps on the GPU are 69c pleased with how the repast and undervolt have worked and it's super quiet now.

Sorry that this might be the wrong thread to post this. I reposted it to a new thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/gs63vr-wont-turn-on.798816/

    ================================
I need some BIG helps here. I received my GS63VR today and the first thing was to upgrade its m.2 SSD to 1TB.

I first powered on laptop just to make sure it works no problem. Then I dissassembled it basically following the steps here: http://www.ultrabookreview.com/12757-upgrade-ram-ssd-msi-gs73/

It wasn't very easy but I got the things done. Before I put back the bottom cover I powered up laptop and with no system installed it booted into BIOS fine. I then hit the power button to shut it down and placed back the bottom cover with screws.

Now to my dismay, the laptop won't power up anymore. I hit the power button and nothing happens at all. I removed the bottom cover and checked everything and it still won't power on. How could I break anything by placing back the bottom cover?

I disconnected the battery, hold on the power button for one minute etc but still nothing. I really appreciate any helps/tips you guys may have to solve this problem.

By the way, I'm used to disassemble and upgrade my own computer/laptops so I'm not a novice although not someone who does it everyday.

    Hi everyone
I got my GS63 and found there is electric noise near the middle of the keyboard. Getting louder when set power plan to high performance and quieter when set power plan to power saving. (definitely not fan noise and I swapped the HDD with SSD already)
Is is normal? since I googled and found a lot of people experience the same issue :'(

    Hi folks,
I just got the GS63 and I'm returning it after noticing several issues on the very first day.
I haven't decided yet on whether I order another model or another GS63 because I'm wondering if I had bad luck or if the issues are real.
Aside from hardcore freeze while watching videos on YouTube (which is obviously bad luck with the computer I got) two things caught my attention:
    - Extremely poor speaker quality (for example when you increase Windows volume to more than like 80% the sound produced by the click sputters like hell, so much that it is impossible to not be suprised when hearing it for the first time,), with all official MSI drivers installed I precise
    - The chassis does kind of sink, producing a strong and not reassuring cracking sound when you press underneath the right extremity of the trackpad (see the video)

Aside from these issues, everything seemed amazing and I'd be frustrated to have to pick another computer over the GS63 which is, on the paper, perfect for my use.

What about y'all, have you experience any of these issues ?

    Thx !

    Hello All,

Anyone know how to determine the chipset that comes with the MSI GS63VR? Control panel device manager just give the really generic intel 100 series/c230 which isn't all that specific. CPU-Z gives a more generic Skylake-H. Is there a good tool to figure this out?

    Thanks.

    Hello All,

I did a clean install on my GS63VR. Anyone know if I really need to install the Intel_ME? How do I check if that thing is actually working? There is no GUI to even check it's status.

Also where/how do I get the MSI x-boost installed? There seems to be no driver/utility for this.

    Thanks
