Sorry for my mistake. Thanks for your opinion! I hope it isn't a laptop that operates on the thermal knife-edge. I think it will end up being louder and hotter, but if it doesn't throttle, it looks good. I wouldn't mind if it gets a half-pound heavier to accommodate a more robust thermal solution.

I think they'll be able to cool down just another 30W of TDP (120W GTX1060 vs 150W GTX1070)... Hopefully anyway...hmscott and ThePerfectStorm like this.

It seems it's an open field for Pascal MXM card TDP implemented by various vendors.
There was supposed to be a single standard by which all Pascal desktops and laptops would implement each GPU, but that seems to have been dropped for whatever will fit - be cooled - by that laptop.
Here is the chart I thought we were following, but numbers from MSI, Asus, AW, Aorus, Clevo and others haven't followed these numbers at all, usually the 10 series cards are actually less than shown here:

Ok, my mistake. I supposed that as nVidia claims everywhere, that mobile chips are about the same as the desktop ones, that TDP will be somewhat similar. But probably not the case that much...hmscott likes this.

No problem. Either way, let's hope that MSI get the cooling for the 1070 right. Otherwise, this laptop will turn into a very expensive thing to fry eggs on.

Yea, let's hope... I'm reconsidering buying MSI at all, especially GS63vr for aaaaaalllll those problems with it... If you win that GS63 lottery and you don't get one with faulty speaker/fans/screen (etc) than maybe, but still I've a feeling that it's just not worth the risk. And it's so damn expensive as well. I have old MSI GT628 that is a great machine, never had a single problem, then I got GT60 (770m) like 4 years ago and it was extremely faulty (4 RMA repairs and than unsuccessful fight for refund with my reseller) so MSI sent me GT72 (970m) instead. Now the keyboard on this started to go (w, s, n somtimes working, somtimes not depending on how you move the machine)... So since GT628 I'm hoping that I'll get a nice product from MSI. So I bought GS63vr and it had 2 faults out of the box, oh man.
Sorry for a little offtopic, but I had to let it out.

Please be more specific. Exactly which version of the GT63VR did you get (-last three digits of the model name) and where did you buy it? -
I got the GS63vr 6RF with Skylake, GTX1060, 16GB RAM, 256 GB NVMe, 1 TB HDD from alza.cz in the Czech Republic. And it had faulty fans and left speaker. Also the screen was a little too dark, but I think it's quite normal (it was LG..046F something).Last edited: Jan 17, 2017

Hi all. Just bought gs63vr. There is some issue, my cpu temp 50-60c in office mode...wtf is this really so hot ? Cpu load 8-20%. All latest updates (bios, util, patches etc.)
Fan noise after asus g501jw is awful. I tune they in dragon center, but after reloading all settings are reset, is bug or feature ?Last edited: Jan 17, 2017 -

Update BIOS & EC firmware and try again. There's a new BIOS that was released on the 12th for 6th gen.
[ Download page] -
I wrote the same " All latest updates (bios, util, patches etc.)" Bios and EC already updated.
Well, try to change thermal paste -
Office work sits around 40C for me. I uninstalled dragon center and just use MSI's Silent Option app for tweaking the fans.
-
What's the difference between dragon center and silent option when setting the fan?
-
Thank you, im trying this variant too.
One more question. After each starting, keyboard layout switch on (rainbow) how to disable this feature ? -
change profile in steel series app not dragon center
-
None. It's exactly the same but I got rid of DC because it installs a process that keeps the HDD from going to sleep. I noted this somewhere earlier in this thread. You'd be forgiven for not seeing it in the 60+ pages.hmscott likes this.
-
oh for that you just need to turn off Xboost
-
My fan settings stick though, so I thought I 'd tell you about Silent Option. Haven't updated to the latest BIOS.
-
I didn't find that to make a difference. I had xboost off.

This might help:

Just bought a GS63VR, love it! I removed a lot of bloatware that was the only crappy thing. Oh and the speakers suck, but I do some P7s from B&W. Is there a list of updated drivers for this machine. On the website it list the drivers but from the same date that the computer was released. I assume those are the newest drivers?
-
Did you get the 7RF with the new Kaby Lake CPUs or the older model? I've heard the new one has upgraded speakers.
-
I got the older one with the 6th Gen i7. -
Hi there. Someone downclocking gtx1060 ?
After undervoltage and disable turboboost, my CPU at load decreased for 8-10c. But GPU very hot and more noisier than CPU.
In MSI afterburner only one change position - memory clock, gpu core cant change (change but core clock dont move)

Hi, I REALLY need some help. I have a GS63VR and it no longer recognizes the second (non-SSD) solid state drive I've nominated as the D drive. The other drive is fine. I tried to find it in disk management and it hasdisappeared from system restore. It's listed as 'Missing'. Has the Hard drive drive died? My desk is a bit sticky from the 40 degree celsius weather so I'm wondering if that's killed the drive. Rest of the laptop seems ok. I don't want to take it apart. It's still under warranty and am worried if I've accidentally gotten water on it MSI won't fix it. I'm in australia. Pls advise. :-(

Are you able to see the drive in BIOS? -
How would i do that?
-
Like this for example:
And search bios for connected drives.Last edited: Jan 20, 2017Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
New update for the dragon centre, they added "Turbo" mode in System tuner>Shift
so you can overclock core clock offset and Vram clock offset.Kevin@GenTechPC, Donald@Paladin44, tobi777 and 1 other person like this. -
I have that turned off too and HDD will go to sleep.
-
I used this one to dissasemble and repaste
Last edited: Jan 20, 2017 -
in MSI Afterburner press ctrl-f to bring up the curve that can let you undervolt
-
You should be able to set HDD on in Power Plan, set to 0 or Never.
-
I updated dragon center too but now the dragon center is always using dgpu. This drains battery and makes machine warmer. (before dgpu would be inavtive even with dragon center on)
I hope they will fix it. -
Hi,
I've just got the GS63VR 6RF. Mine came with 256GB of SSD and 1TB of HDD.
I've noticed that under light to normal usage (web browsing, MS Office, a bit of development in eclipse) the right hand side where my palm woud rest gets quite warm after only a couple of hours. It's not burning hot, but enough to become inconvenient.
After looking a bit more in detail, it's exactly where the HDD is located that it's warmest. So I monitored my disks temperature with HWMonitor and here's what I got after only 1,5h of light usage.
HWMonitor measures 50°C for the SSD and 40°C for the HDD, I find it quite strange since all my programs are installed on the SSD and so while there should be no activity on the HDD it still gets to 40°C.
When I look at my old laptops, my disks never got over 35°C in normal usage, and that was the Boot drive.
I've disabled Xboost in Dragon Center and set my power settings to let the HDD go to sleep after 5 minutes, even when I'm plugged in.
What do you guys think about those temperatures? Can you share yours?
Also, do you also notice this warmth in the right hand side area?
Thanks in advance,
Quan -
My SSD sits around 42C and the HDD 22C. Room temp around 18C. CPU sits around 40C. I think the HDD is close to the CPU so maybe it's getting heated by that? The right side is warmer to the touch on mine as well.
-
Thanks.
After how long do you get those temperatures?
On mine, after the first boot in the morning, I get 40C for the SSD and 25C for the HDD, but after only 1 to 2 hours of light to moderate usage, I got 50C for the SSD and 40C for the HDD.
My CPU sits around 45°C in idle or light usage and my room temperature is around 20°C.
I think something is not right with my unit. I'm tempted to do a factory reset to see if this changes anything.
Oh I forgot, after I ran the Crystal Disk Benchmark, I got 67°C on the SSD and 45°C on the Hdd. Do you find those figures normal? -
After some use browsing and a skype video call I get CPU 45C, SSD 54C and HDD 33C. Half hour more or less.
-
Hello, before I sent mine to the RMA, I too was quite alarmed about the temps on the SSD (~55°C, which is a little too hot in my opinion), the HDD - 40°C is completely fine, even 50°C is relatively safe. But regarding the SSD, I had a Toshiba SSD (don't remember exactly) and operating temps for those are from 0°C to 80°C, according to Toshiba website, so 55°C seems to be ok as well... But 67°C is quite hot, when I did CDB, I got about 57°C max, but I did it only once, no stress testing.Last edited: Jan 21, 2017

Go to Intel rapid storage software link power management and disable the power saver. it reduces power to drives when not in use, but caused my cpu lag and jumps, this fixed my issue which sounds like urshmscott likes this.
-
Bit late for that, as I sent it back a long time ago, but thanks for the advice
-
Thanks for your feedback. Actually I'm not worried about damaging the drives, I'm more concerned about the unusual temperatures that shouldn't be that high on a light usage of the laptop, that eventually, causes a warm laptop that is on the edge of being incovenient to use after only a couple of hours. I'm wondering if I have a faulty unit or if it's per design due to the thin chassis.
So I take it that you guys don't find it too warm to become inconvenient to rest your right hand palm after a couple of hours of usage?
Thx. -
The heat can be bothersome, but i use a laptop cooler at all times so i never really notice.. i use a targes one that is amazing and only paid like 20$

You bring this wherever you go? I plan to use the MSI as my daily driver for work and I think this would kill the purpose of having a light machine.
-
yea, weighs nothing, doesnt get in the way, really small tbh, i love it, its no bigger than the laptop, if i new how to upload a picntonthis forum id show ya
-
Ok, thx for the tip, I'll look into it.
-
I've had the 6RF for a couple of weeks. Day to day work so far has been Gmail and accounting work, regular browsing and light music production (Ableton Live) and scripting/programming (Cycling74 Max). I haven't been bothered by any heat development in these scenario's. I've done a bit of gaming too (Borderlands 2) and then it obviously heats up considerably.
I always have it on a table with the ventilation openings free. I incidentally browse on it sitting on the couch with the laptop on the lap and that 's been fine. -
I'm having issues with my CPU undervolt to keep things cool. Intel XTU wouldn't restore the settings after a reboot. Throttlestop does after reboot but it disappears after the computer went to sleep. Anyone having more luck with this?
-
Also, who has updated to the latest BIOS? Any adverse effects?
