Hey All, I just picked up one of the 6RF used. It is an 001, which wasnt my first choice but the price was too good to pass up. Better news is the screen turns out to be an IPS from everything I can tell. It is an LP156WF6-SPK3, LGD0533. I wasnt able to find much on it that wasnt in Chinese, still what I found indicated IPS and beyond that it does look good and is plenty bright. The problem that I didnt notice until now is that when the laptop is closed, the screen doesnt turn off, it flashes rapidly. Anyone know what might cause this?

Also does anyone know if and how you can transfer warranty from the original owner? They did register it, but I cant find anything about how to do that. I have the original receipt from the seller and its only 4 months old. Thanks.

I am thinking about buying msi gs63vr 7rf with kaby lake. I was wondering what is the battery life with light tasks such as web surfing, watching videos and office work?
I will probably buy it without windows so which programs do i need to install after a clean windows install?
Also, i want to use the computer with an external monitor but i am worried it will overheat when the lid is closed since the ventilation holes over the keyboard will be blocked. Is that an issue? Do i need to keep the lid open? Is there a way to get the power button work with the lid closed?

omeren83, i think you cannot working with closed lid, because on upper surface (where keyboard) is air intake grid.

Hey there everyone, I have the
GS63VR 7RF-236CA model and was wondering what docking stations everyone was using?

If I go TB3 to a dock and from the dock to 3 external monitors will that utilize the onboard GPU or the nvidia 1060 gpu?

Not true! The TB3 output uses the Intel GPU. Mini DisplayPort and HDMI use the Nvidia GPU.

My apology, I stand corrected. It is Intel processor that provides the bandwidth and graphics processing power.

It's been a while since I posted on here. So, uhhh.... re-Hello?
Anyways I am contemplating getting the GS63VR-252 that BestBuy currently has for $1549
I looked at the one they had on display, and was mostly impressed. Build quality was ok, but the screen was deff TN panel.

2 things I am concerned about. Heat and Battery Life. I tend to always set up my own powersaver battery profile, where I typically limit the processor state to 20-30%.
I do not really care about the lag it creates, as long as the system does not crash. The extra run time when off the plug is more beneficial than OS stuttering.

I did a quick search, but did not see anyone talking about test results after repasting. Has anyone done this and posted the results? Specifically interested in the Grizzly conductonaught. and if it will work on the GS63VR.
Trying to decide if I want to stay with my AW17 with 1070, or get this machine and take the performance/thermals hit.

So how does it work then if you use the TB3 to a external monitor and additionally use the HDMI and Mini-display port to external monitors aswell?

You would have 1 port on the iGPU and 2 ports on the dGPU.

I'm not sure as I don't have the monitors/cables to try it, but theoretically you could have 5 4K displays (internal + HDMI (Nvidia) + Mini DisplayPort (Nvidia) + dual TB3 (Intel)).

Just an update. I decided to keep the GS63VR (bestbuy). I also bought the XPS 15 to test them side by side, but returned the XPS after a week. The XPS just blows away the GS63VR in terms of display BUT you do notice the performance difference between the 1050 vs the 1060. The GS63VR handled all the latest games that I threw at it with high to max graphics settings. It did not break a sweat running GTA5 on max settings whereas the XPS had trouble breaking the ideal 60 FPS that I was looking for. Also, the XPS was noticeably more louder on full load compared to the GS63VR.

This is a great laptop for those who wants something discreet but packs a punch when you need it.

    Thanks!

It is not a GS63VR problem as ive seen this with various notebooks with IPS panels..I just have a screen saver on and that helps alot.

Is there a way to turn off backlighting by default when we restart the system? I want to open the backlighting if i want to. I don't want my keys to light up every time i open windows.

Also, how do i force use the integrated gpu? I have chosen the integrated gpu from nvidia control panel but the led indicator sometimes turns orange(or yellow) when i am not doing anything graphically intensive and occasional stutters are still there. For example, it stutters when i click the battery icon in the bottom right corner.

Are you on the Windows 10 Creators update?
Hit Start and type `winver`, then run it. What does Version Number say?

Looks like MSI is coming out with a 120Hz 3ms GS63VR soon?

    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GS63VR-7RF-Stealth-Pro.html#hero-specification

Looks like they've listed it in the specs early and will probably be announced or released soon at their upcoming events. I would assume it to be accurate considering all of manufacturers all pretty much have a 120hz 15.6" option available and gamers want it.

I thought this was an extremely well done review. Thanks

I am wondering peoples thoughts on this laptops and running a 2560x1440p monitor? I am looking to output from the GS63VR to 1x 2560x1440p and 1x 1920x1080p monitor.

Does this sound like something the laptops 1060 can handle? As long as I get a 2560x1440 60Hz?

Im having a hard time finding some bench marks for the GS63VR on a 2560 monitor.

    Thanks.

Any 1060 tested with 4k content / gaming should be good enough, although I realize it's best to have the actual laptop under test, and there must be something out there - search on Youtube and see what comes up for 1060 4k and also search for GS63VR 4k

The review says the laptop should support 3 external monitors + the internal display, but I would verify that before counting on it. In this particular test you want to have it tested on the laptop you want to get.

There have been some laptops that suggest 3 + 1 support, but end up only allowing 3 active and 1 connected but inactive.

Also, I added some content to my previous post, brought over from an answer in another thread, I thought it would be of interest.

That's why. There's a newer version (called the Creators Update) that fixes the issue. Microsoft hasn't released it for everyone, but you can get it immediately using the Media Creation Tool.

What is the screen for? WIth overwatch you can get well over 100fps with high settings in 1440p.
AAA titles on ultra 1080p will struggle. so there is no need for 1440p 144hz there.

Depends on what games you will be playing. But I am in a similar spot and I am deciding between 1440p gsync and just reduce graphic settings for that extra FPS
    OR 1080p 144hz ultra.

Games i play are mainly: Overwatch, Dota2, D3 at home. And then AAA titles in single player occasionally.

I play mainly MMORPG's, FFXIV, WOW, ESO. Alot of AAA single players, Witcher 3, Fo4 etc. Occassionally MOBAS but im not too worried about the specs for MOBA's.

Tough decision I tell ya, 27" 1080P LED Monitor, or a 27" 1440p Monitor and I turn down some settings. Games are only going to get more and more demanding, may be better to get the 1080p to ensure I can always play them on near ultra settings.

Totally agree. However since i play alot of overwatch im considering the 1440p with gsync though.

WHat I do need to find out however is if ultra settings at 1080p looks better than high settings at 1440p :D

My cpu temperatures are around 95 C, while gaming. I am considering undervolting the cpu with intel xtu. How should i do this? Do i need to apply stress tests after the undervolt? Will i experience any performance drops while gaming?

I think high settings at 1440p would look better than ultra settings at 1080p. Resolution is the most important thing when it comes to visuals.

I would use ThrottleStop for undervolting, as once you have found the sweet spot for the undervolt you can set ThrottleStop to load on logging into windows and apply the undervolt automatically. I am stable at -160mv on cpu and cache and it has helped my temperatures dramatically. Going from the 90c's on load to 75c on gpu and cpu playing BF1.

There are quite a few guides, here are two of the ones i looked at:
    http://www.ultrabookreview.com/10167-laptop-undervolting-overcloking/
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Lenovo/comments/49uma8/guide_y70015isk_i76700hq_throttlestop_undervolt/

Undervolting is like overclocking so you do want to run stability tests. I ran Aida64 cpu stress test for a few hours, then did some gaming, then ran Unigine Heaven for a while etc. I would get system crashes above -165mv.

It is supposed to and there are ways to do it more reliably but it is a pain. A lot of feedback I found around XTU was that it is buggy and unreliable and that was my experience. I couldnt get XTU to hold an undervolt after reboot or sleep. If you like it better than yeah give it a shot. Either way I would definitely recommend undervolting and I just personally found ThrottleStop to be easier.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this popup?
    https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/TechFAQdetail.aspx?formid=3284

I have to reload my game or video if I plug in speakers/headphones and I can't seem to access the realtek menu. I know there's an option in the realtek menu but even the direct file path won't open anything other than an icon in the taskbar. I've tried reinstalling the driver ect but it didn't make a difference. Is there another realtek driver I can use that will work with the gs63vr better than the latest?

How are the UEFI bios on these MSI gaming machines? I was unable to reboot into them at Best Buy without being admin... Personally I haven't strayed from ASUS products since the beginning of time. My rampage motherboards have amazing options, theres nothing you seemingly can not do tweaking wise and overclocking wise.

The MSI forums leave much to be desired, it's actually quite unsettling that there are no conversations happening anywhere on their forums unlike the ROG forums... love this model but I still haven't pulled the trigger.

So what can one do in the UEFI? you seriously need a third party app to undervolt or overclock ect...?

Both ASUS & MSI use AMI UEFI so they are similar beside their own customization. The part where you can't get into the BIOS also depends. You can try powering on the machine and hold DEL key immediately to see if you can enter the UEFI BIOS menu, otherwise you will have to do Shift + Restart while inside of Windows.

Thanks Kev... but considering I don't own a GS63 yet I'm curious to know what one can do in there, if one can change dram timings or cpu voltage ect? I've read that the HM175 chipset is pretty much locked and I know these are HQ processors which are non-overclockable but that doesn't rule out undervolting from the UEFI interface :D

Is it just your standard fanfare "wow I can change my boot order" text interface or does it have a GUI that allows some optimizations like RAM timing, power profile, fan profiles or anything?

BIOS options are more limited on notebook than desktop motherboards. You will not see these options without unlocking its menu through a BIOS update (some can be unhidden with combo keys).
HM175 chipset is definitely more limited than Z chipset. You can definitely do undervolt using available software utilities and RAM timing, power profile, and fan profiles aren't available with stock BIOS.
Also, power profile and fan profile are part of EC firmware but not the main BIOS.

Fair enough... thanks for the info. I'm not afraid of modded bios but one thing I have discovered with laptops in general (or maybe just MSI laptops) is that one has to save an image of the original bios as it seem MSI does not offer images of previous bios versions on their support page.

For the nearly $2000 model I been scoping out I'd really like or expect a feature packed product, people who are buying these models don't need Dragon Center to do their tweaking for them ya know... This is mainly for my boat but I'd like the option of the portability aspect so it can come and go with me as I please but I am also considering building a 12 volt gigabyte BRIX system and slapping it in a marine grade box and just leaving it onboard. I need the Thunderbolt port though so I can tap into my house/cabin monitoring system and control the entertainment system/external monitors all from one device. USB is going to be a lot of cabling and external power sources (too much clutter)

I have never owned a laptop with a K SKU CPU, they are fairly expensive and historically less portable. So without that then no almost no bios from any vendor has voltage, etc available. Its locked down so the 98% of people that don't know what they are doing don't kill their shiny new laptop. Can you get an unlocked bios, yes, even then you don't often have those features. So in most cases yes you need XTU or Throttlestop to handle undervolting. But comparing your traditional motherboard UEFI from Asus, MSI, etc in a custom built PC to one in a laptop is not fair. It would be fair if we were talking about an off the shelf Dell or HP desktop, those have the same limitations in the UEFI when you have a non-K SKU.

I can go out and buy a brand new shiny Porsche then go slam it into a wall if I wish... it's good to be an American :D

If bios tweaks don't take... full size motherboards fail at POST and do not boot (logic 101) I personally don't want a text based EFI on a $2000 machine, which is what you have to spend to get a good panel and a decent sized NVMe drive already installed. nobody wants to drop $1600 bucks and have to dissect their new toy, that makes less sense than giving consumers a decent EFI.

I am piecing together a 12 volt mini PC system to just leave on ship, I've come to the conclusion that the cost of this model isn't worth the headache of what i've read and having a cheap panel, the GS63 just lacks that little bit of extra portability (battery life)

    Hey guys,

Got myself the 6rf skylake version of Amazon along with a WD blue 500gig SSD and it arrives in a week or so. Just wanted to know if anyone has undervolted the skylake model and has any stable settings that i could start with?
    I'd help me a lot.
    Thanks :)

Your analogy sort of proves my point, if you want an unhinged beast pf a PC (like a Porsche) it is gonna cost you. And cars do have ECU's that limit certain aspects of control and performance...

You can easily kill a chip with too much voltage, that **** will post with a nominal oveclock or no overclock and you could still kill your chip.

Great, build what works for you, if the GS63VR aint the best option then thats fine... I got mine for $1000 used with a decent IPS panel, so I am stoked and happy with it so far. But building PCs is more fun anyway.

My Skylake is undervolted, look back a couple pages on this thread for some links I used. But I have mine rock stable at a -160mV on CPU and Cache... helped battery life and more importantly, temperatures. I started with -150mv on both and worked my way up doing Aida64 stress testing. I found Battlefield 1 to also be a great game for stressing a system, it works all the cores it can pretty well.

    Thanks! :)
Another thing, what fan settings do you use? And have you tinkered with the GPU undervolt/overclock? I'm kinda new to this so just want to take in all the information i can before my laptop arrives.

I use custom settings on the fans. I bias the fans towards GPU since it has two fans and is quieter at higher speeds than the CPU fan. CPU fan I have ramp up at 47, 54, 62,67, 80 and GPU at 55, 66, 76, 83, 91. But I tweak it every so often so play with it during stress testing to find the right mix of noise and cooling. I havent bothered undervolting the Nvidia GPU, my reading on it has indicated limited benefit cooling wise. Though iGPU undervolting can help with battery life, though I havent done much of that yet either.
