Yes, this is because of hardware limitation (chipset-related).

Curious how well does the 6700hq with 1070 handle GTA5 as far as cpu/gpu load? And do you guys things think this laptop will ever hit a heavy(25-30%) cpu bottleneck vsthe 6820hk in 2 - 3years

It will handle GTA5 just fine, CPU shouldn't encounter any bottleneck within the next 2 to 3 year since most of the titles focus on the use of GPU.

Good because im thinking if i get the 72vr cheap enough then i can cheap out this upgrade cycle. then in 2018 we get a boost from i7 6 cores and volta gpus.

Hi, does anyone know if the refresh rate of the GT72VR Dominator-063 is 60 Hz or 75 Hz?

    Thanks.

EDIT: And has anyone tried overclocking its monitor's refresh rate?

It has 60Hz with G-Sync, refresh rate is not overclockable.

    Thank you.

EDIT: I just came across the Dominator Pro-257 on HIDE, their store says it has a G-Sync panel but after some searching, people say that it doesn't.

Were drivers updated to support that panel recently?

    Dude, you're wrong.
I've see owners of the GT72VR fixing the color banding issue on their screens by overclocking the refresh rate to 100Hz. Any value higher than that doesn't work and just switches back to 60Hz.

But it IS overclockable to 100Hz.

EDIT: The panel on the GT62VR (15 inch) is hardly overclockable. People confirmed it can only go to around 64-65Hz. But I'm pretty sure the 17 inch LG panels are!

Gront, can you try to change the refresh to 100Hz in Nvidia control panel and see if it works?

Sorry, I don't have the laptop yet. I'm planning on getting one in the future.

It would be great if it can be overclocked to 100 Hz though, I was looking at the Dominator-286 with the 120 Hz G-Sync but it seems that it's out of stock on HIDE. (I would consider other stores but they don't have global warranty)

I'm also thinking of waiting for Kaby Lake chips as they're right around the corner, the extra 200-300 Mhz should help at high refresh rates.

Hi guys I do have the GT72VR 120hz 1070 model. Does anyone have a problem where upon powering on the machine the screen is black and stays black?

I freshly formatted the the drive with windows 10 reinstalled, latest nvidia driver 376.33. I did load some of the msi drivers, but not their software.

Its a nice machine but wondering if I need to RMA/return.

Btw the 120hz screen appears to be the same as used in the GT73VR
    HWINFO64 shows:

Monitor Name: Chi Mei [Unknown Model: CMN1747]
Monitor Name (Manuf): N173HHE-G32 CMN N173HHE-G32
    Serial Number: Unknown
Date Of Manufacture: Week: 16, Year: 2016
    Monitor Hardware ID: Monitor\CMN1747

Well guys, after a few months of using the GT72VR and having it randomly crash with artifacts from time to time, I was playing Dishonored 2 today and I had it underclocked -400MHZ so that I could play without a GPU crash every 10 minutes. All was dandy, played about 10 hours of the game over a few days and today it really hit the bricks:

While playing the GPU crashed and it showed artifacts over the game and it didnt reset like usual. I thought that was fine so I restarted but every time it gets to MSI logo it shows those artifacts and nothing happens after. :( Guess I have to make a trip over to the MSI shop now.

I also know someone with the 1060 model and theirs is fine. How do I update the vbios for this laptop?
Also earlier today I updated the mainboard bios with version
    E1785IMS.111
    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-Dominator-Pro-6th-Gen-GTX-1070.html#down-bios

... Hours later and they are already updated to version E1785IMS.112 so I may try that too.
Anyways with E1785IMS.111 I waited 9 hours later for a 'cold' boot and I'm 1 for 1 with no issue. Obviously I need to try more but thats a good sign.

Sorry to hear about yours Kolunez.

I just ordered the GT72VR Dominator-063 from HIDEvolution with a clean Windows install to get rid of bloatware. Looking forward to it! Also a bit nervous since this is the first time I'm ordering something this expensive from overseas.

Could anyone recommended any drivers and essential MSI software to install?

    Thanks.

I just received my GT72VR from HIDEvolution and it's better than I expected. I got a couple of questions though... Are there any risks to running the display at 100 Hz? Is G-Sync going to work with the overclocked panel?

Anyone got an idea why my external USB 3.0 hard drive is only transferring files at 1 MB/s?

It's usually 100-110 MB/s on my other laptop and desktop.

EDIT: I fixed the problem, it seems that it's my enclosure. It crapped out or something... I borrowed a friend's enclosure and it works fine now.

    Hi all!

I bought GT72VR 6RD 3 months ago and only downside of this beast is some light bleeding of the monitor in the lower left corner of the screen. I didn't feel like going back to the store and exchange it cause some guys who actually went there cause of this issue got back even with a worse case. It's not really noticeable in a daily use so I'ts okay.
I've overclocked the monitor's refresh rate and I'm having it on 90Hz without any issues for about 2 months.

I've got some question regarding BIOS's RAM memory frequency.
As I see in specifications, this laptop has DDR4 2133 MHz memory but in BIOS you can change this to 2400MHz which I did.
Is it safe to leave it on higher frequency or should I lower it to default?
I mean, this is laptop, it's not really made for overclocking as PC's so better to be ask than to be sorry later.
I owned only PC's until now so..

Regarding monitor overclock, I've been doing some research regarding it and beside theoretical shortening of monitors life, there's really no harm in overclocking it. And it looks better.

    EDIT:

And I just figured out that 3D Mark won't run if you have monitor overclocked. Same is with Battlefield 1, it doesn't work in full screen (only borderless) if monitor''s refresh rate isn't default.
When I set it back to 75Hz to test it, both 3d Mark and BF works. But according to various forums, it has to do something linked with DX12 and refresh rate.

EDIT2: After putting back refresh rate to 90Hz, 3d Mark runs fine and Battlefield 1 works in full screen, so, somehow putting refresh rate to default, and then back to 90Hz fixed my issues with 3d Mark giving error and BF1 not going into full screen mode. Huh.

    Hey All first post here,
I just bought MSI GT72VR 6RD Dominator, this model comes with nvidia 1060 card , this laptop worked pretty good when I first got it, however after loading all my software and updating the drivers the video became sluggish, I do a lot ov video editing and animation and I bought this laptop for playing games and do some work / editing.
I noticed my programs started to load slower after 4 days of owning this unit also big problem comes with video , example after playing World of Tanks on line I come back to desktop screen and try to play any video and it will not play, I loaded some gadgets displaying operation processes and when I try to play video file "avi" it simply loads the player and displays black screen however the system does not hang and works fine as I look at the gadget gauges I can see no cpu / ram / gpu activity, it's almost as the system won't pass the video file into running task, I also noticed sony vegas loading for like over 2 minutes when I click on it , this laptop has a SSD drive sony vegas should load in less than 30 seconds..
any idea as what maybe wrong with this laptop ?, I just updated the video driver updated sound driver , running windows 10 up to date...
    any help would be appreciated,

    thanks !

I didn't ask MSI support, I'm not really sure how helpful they are..they will probably give me some diplomatic useless answer, cause the memory isn't supposed to be on 2400MHz as it's DDR4 2133 so I doubt the answer would be like "Yea dude, go for it, milk that RAM as much as you can!"
But now as I was writing this I recalled of a MSI forum which was very helpful in the past for me, so I'll ask there about opinion and let you know!

not yet , I am planning to do that all today, can you pls give me a quick run down what I need, I would think to update bios first and then ec correct?
can I update the bios from windows ? from a flash drive ? what is the process.
I see I logged into MSI site and found the procedure, thanks anyways

One more thing though I can not find the exact model of my laptop on the MSI website,
I got the laptop registered but when I try to find the exact model it tells me it cant find it...

Model MSI GT72VR 6RD 050 ca Dominator , under my registration with msi when I scroll down under my model to access the drivers / updates it says it can't find it lol

The closest I found was MSI GT72VR 6RD 033 Dominator

    any ideas ?

    thank you !

    Process is simple and quick.
You can update EC and VBIOS from windows, and BIOS from flash drive and well, from BIOS. :D
    You can find all here:
    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-6RD-Dominator.html#down-utility&null

It's under firmware and bios sections. Download it, and in ZIP/RAR there is manual on how-to-do-it too.

This seems to be main site and all the bios/drivers/utility all pertain to GT72VR Dominator with the 1060. It seems the bios and ec and vbios are all the same for that particular model i think.

Unless you buy from a big box store, eBay or Amazon, your vendor should be your first place to go for tech support and/or warranty service.

Updating via flash drive is the easiest, and as for the flash drive, supported filesystem is FAT/FAT32 with no more than 32GB capacity.

Can any owner of GT72VR 6RD check their RAM memory speed in AIDA or some similar program? My AIDA says that I got 2400MHz inside but on default, it works on 2133, which I changed to 2400MHz in BIOS as I wrote in previous post.
Only reason I'm writing this is that I was sure that the memory installed is DDR4 2133MHz and not 2400.
And it seems I cant find any good info on google about full specification of this laptop.

    Hi,

This is the specification page that i found.

    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/GT72VR-Dominator-6th-Gen-GTX-1060#hero-specification

And if you have the msi help desk installed, and export system info, it states that the memory is 2400mhz.

As to what speed its running at on default i havent tested it yet.

Yep, its 2400 MHz but it runs on 2133 as this is motherboard's default frequency and official supported frequency for I7 6700HQ are 1866 and 2133.
So I guess, as the memory is 2400, there is no harm to put it in BIOS from 2133 to 2400. It will probably have slightly worse timings but the bandwidth will be better.
It's not that its actually needed cause this is a beast of a laptop but its user's preference how he wants his system to behave and on what frequency the chips should dance on.

Well guess I answered my question by myself :D.
Thanks Milardo for checking the frequency and for the link!

Yes, higher clock speed will bring higher CAS. There is no harm in putting it at DDR4/2400MHz.

You can insert modules up to 2800MHz but it will only run at 2133MHz max, and it will not provide any benefits beyond that point unless the module has a more aggressive timing at the same frequency, or if you are able to overclock the bus.

    Hey there,
Well bios had been flashed and upgraded.., went smooth , good news video now seems fine, but I noticed I got a lag on sound for some reason...,
Using win media player or vlc, don't matter it seems to lag...
I got some sound FX installed on sata drive the secondary drive in the laptop, now when I hit a sound to play , the player loads then it waits like 3-4 seconds then it plays the sound...
    my work station is instantaneous...
    any ideas ?

second thing I tried to update the EC controller and no luck , with in windows I double click ECflashwin.exe, it looks like its loading but nothing comes up, tried to run it as administrator and no luck...
    am I missing something here?

thank you , thank you !

You have to start .bat file not .exe
    It's called ECWin.bat

Do you have latest sound drivers? Nahimic 2 is installed? If it is, try to disable it, if it's not, install it and try, haha!
Another option would be to download driver booster or some similar software for driver checking. I got Driver Booster 4 and it seems to do its job.
Its sometimes annoying with reminders to check for driver updates, but you can turn that off in task scheduler.
Did you update VBIOS too or just BIOS? There are 3 updates available, BIOS, VBIOS and EC.

Yeah, like you would normally run .exe..its command prompt...you just run it, press Y and it will start flashing. It doesn't take long.
