Not sure about this, but does any GT72VR model have the combo usb 3.1 type c/thunderbolt 3? Or is it just usb 3.1 type c? I am getting conflicting answers after calling MSI and some retailers.

    The GT72VR supports 3.1 Type C, but doesn't support TB3.

On the official specification page of GT72VR, TB3 isn't mentioned.

Got it, we will correct the error, thank you for pointing it out.
The overview page was provided by MSI, but the detailed specification on our site says Type-C. So it is very likely that TB3 was planned initially but removed in the finalized specification.

Is it possible the chipset/hardware for thunderbolt 3 is in the laptop but not enabled because there are no drivers yet? I've heard something about a clevo notebook where that was the case.

It's possible but the controller can be missing or it could have been disabled to save cost (on licensing, etc). However, only MSI knows the true answer behind this.

Ok, guess i will contact them again, last answer i received they told me yes it's a combo port, but i will try to get a more detailed answer if there is anyway to enable it. Is it possible that you can ask them about this?

It's not going to be re-enabled if such (controller) does exist since its specification has already been finalized to market. Or the controller was never implemented onto the PCB.

You can save your time...the answer is right here. The GT72VR does not, and cannot, support Thunderbolt 3. The controller chip is not on the Type-C port.

They could add it on a future generation, but that is not likely since the GT73VR is on the road map to replace the GT72VR as it moves to End of Life.

I agree, since tech products evolve fast and phase out fast. Once its spec is decided it is pretty much set for life, gotta move onto a different product if this feature (TB3) is required.

Is it alright if I set the fans to 0% when the temps are below 50 C? (Or whatever the second 'heat level' is in the Dragon Center's custom fan profile settings)

Or should I keep them running all the time?

It pretty much stays below 45 C with the fans off while browsing according to Dragon Center.

I would think that would be okay, if it is staying around that temperature without fans. If it gets hot enough, then you would want to have them back on. 45C should be okay though.

Can't do 0% as the fan retains a minimum speed, and even if it can be set to run at 0 rpm then that means it won't stay at 0% for long before it starts spinning hard.

FYI, Svet has once tried setting the fan speed to 0% in the EC firmware but it didn't work since there's a minimum threshold in design so the fan will simply stick to a lowest speed.

Does anyone have the same problem as me where the laptop runs horribly in certain games in fullscreen mode? (So far, CS:GO and Killing Floor 2)

Switching to borderless windowed fixes it, but it's still a bit annoying. At first I thought KF2 just ran at 40-50 FPS with a lot of jittering because I maxed out the settings but I turned on Afterburner's OSD and the GPU was only getting ~30% usage...

So I thought to change it to borderless windowed like CS:GO and it worked, runs buttery smooth now.

Could be, I do have it enabled.

I've also tried updating to the latest BIOS just now but no dice.

EDIT: Interesting how the BIOS update increased the default refresh rate to 75 Hz from 60 Hz.

Thanks guys , all the drivers installed and working well, decided to remove Nahimic2 it was causing bad lag in playing MP3 or any sounds, what was happening was when I click to play amp3 or a wav file the system would wait like 5 seconds to start playing, very annoying , after I removed that Nahimic2 software my sound is perfect it plays as soon as you click the files...
I got one more small problem though, I do a lot of graphic design, so I installed corel draw x6 and updated it so it works well in windows 10 preinstalled, I found corel really lags when I zoom in and out while designing , almost as the screen redraws all the time..., is there a way to fix this ? , I know that on my asus laptop with geforce card I was able to assign which application would use geforce gpu or intel gpu, it almost seems like the laptop is using intel gpu to run my graphic design software... any way to improve the performance of my gpu while I design ??
    anyone?

    thanks !

There is a new BIOS version:

    The change is:
Modify GPIO GPP_E0 to support H/W design.

Does anyone know what the hell does it mean?

Hi, gt72vr has only discrete nvidia gpu, no optimus with intel gpu. Also, may try to check nvidia control panel-manage 3d settings-program settings- and see if your application is listed or not, you can add it and see if any of the options helps. Let us know.

Yes I too have this same problem with the same laptop... Now have to go back to 75hz refresh and get the color banding...
Anyone know any solutions for this problem or why it's happening? I've tried rolling back nvidia driver and won't allow it in device mgr. Please help.
    Thanks

I haven't updated my Windows yet but that sounds bad, I absolutely hate the color banding at 75 Hz...

Hopefully MSI or Nvidia introduces a fix soon.

After the Creators Update, some drivers crashed and I had to reinstall them.
I recommend you to reinstall nVidia Drivers and try to get again the custom resolution.

It has fixed the black screen issue for most people. and if you are overclocking your screen refresh rate by any chance or changing it from the default, I would strongly advise against it.

I shut down laptop for a day waiting for a fix to come out. And then tried rolling back nvidia driver in device manager again. And now it seems to be working. Geforce experience is asking me to update to new driver so turn off auto update and it should work. Was able to overclock to 100hz again and no more banding. Temporary fix until better one comes out. Hope this helps.

I just found this on the MSI support page for this notebook. It tells you to set to 100hz which effectively sets the color depth to 6bpc... So it is an official fix from MSI support. Unfortunately, nothing about new fix since creators update, but hopefully soon. So might bookmark this page. Good luck.

    Hey guys,

I want to know 3D Mark Fire Strike scores of all MSI GT72VR 6RE/7RE owners.

    My score: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/19391750

3D Mark Firestrike 1.1 (settings 3DMark default, default laptop clocks, G-Sync turned off):

    3DMark Score 13682
    Graphics Score 17217

    Physics Score 10863
    Combined Score 6363
    Graphics Test 1 81.46 fps
    Graphics Test 2 69.25 fps
    Physics Test 34.49 fps
    Combined Test 29.6 fps

    A few questions,

    1) G-Sync affects frame-rate a little right? With G-Sync turned on, i get less frame-rate on the Graphics Test.

    2) The ram speed is at @ 2.398 MHz, is this the max clock possible?

    3) The cpu clocks change between 3.6ghz and 3.8ghz, is this normal?

    4) Can´t reach Notebookcheck Fire Strike Graphics Scores, even 6RE is better, maybe the newest Nvidia drivers dont work so well with 3D Mark?

Im using the lastest Windows 10, drivers, Bios, VBios, Firmware, no background applications running.
